Came out here mainly b/c this was one of the main places that Yelp gave great reviews regarding dog friendly and allows drinks. We came during an off-time and it worked well for us. We were camping nearby and just wanted to see what was available for us. This was an overall win. The small games allowed our family to hangout at the table and play while we had a few drinks. Our dog ... well dogged and was happy to be out of the camper. Overall, the beer was good, nothing earth-shattering, but they had some very solid flavors. Fun place to vibe and have brews. Designed well for festive feel. Classic smash brewery feel with sticker walls, games to grab and play, food truck in parking lot. The tap master was nice but not well versed with the beers. I asked about their award winning coffee stout and he was politely unfamiliar. So, the beers... the reason you visit and come back again to a place were okay. Good variety but lacking fabulousness. The coffee story was indeed good but all beers looked and went down feeling thin. The hooray for Luray IPA is over the top hoppy but in all fairness it's high IBU and the tap master did know that and conveyed before buying. The Christmas string age was indeed that but very Orange flavored. Did not enjoy. Again, good flavor options and some different styles but wasn't wowed. The place is very family and dog friendly, making it a great Luray hang out spot. During our recent visit to Luray, the snow was coming down hard and the caverns were closed. With few dog-friendly activities nearby, and our hiking plans cancelled, we decided to check out Hawksbill. My husband and I each got a flight, with a mixture of darks and lights. Overall, we really enjoyed the lighter beers like their saison and kolch. We both weren't too impressed by their stout or port. They were quite watered down and had a hint of licorice taste to them. On Sundays they don't serve food, but the bartender was nice enough to let us get take out and bring it inside to enjoy our beers with. When in Luray, I recommend coming here if you're a beer enthusiast and have your pup with you. read more

Stopped in here on a Sunday midday and we were practically the only patrons but the bartender was friendly, the IPA I tried was pretty good, and my pup enjoyed chilling on the cool floor and watching people pass by. Wished there were some food options (or that I'd read there weren't before we stopped in) and more brews on tap but, overall, it was a nice spot to spend a couple hours relaxing after a hike in Shenandoah. read more

One of our favorite spots after hitting some of the many nearby hikes. The ever rotating selection of fantastic brews here is top notch. As somebody who doesn't love IPA's it's always nice to see a variety of different t styles of beer on tap, not every beer needs to be 8%+ abv... in warmer months they often have food trucks outside and you can always order takeout. We stopped in for a quick drink. Hubby had been wanting to try it so he had a few beers. I didn't feel like drinking, so I got the boo beer. Such a cute name, but it's root beer with honey. It was yummy. It had its own place in the tap and came in a tall glass just like the beer so nobody could even tell it's not beer. The inside was nice and open and had a bunch of games to play with. I found a baby boomer trivial pursuit so we played with that for a few min. We didn't know many of the answers. The place is dog friendly as there was a doggy inside. I sat on the floor and played with the dog for a while too. They even have a little play area for kids on the side. Hawksbill Brewing is a must-stop for anyone heading from DC to Shenandoah National Park. Just a quick 15-minute drive west of the Thornton Gap exit on Skyline Drive, it's perfectly located for a refreshing weekend brew! The beer here is top-notch. I usually drink their Hooray for Luray IPA, which is fantastic. They also have another lower alcohol IPA, which is great (I cannot remember the name). I recently tried their Märzen--normally not my go-to style, but it was incredible. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of small-town Virginia charm with a laid-back, hip vibe. The staff are super friendly and make you feel right at home. And --Hawksbill is dog-friendly, which is a big plus for me! We stopped in on our visit to Luray (we were staying about 20 minutes away for our anniversary) as we like beer and our AirBnB host recommended the Brewery. Everyone was very nice and helpful with our questions. We ended up taking one of their christmas beers-- the Christmas Mouse--to go in a 4 pack but prior we each tried a flight. The coffee stout, the other Stout on tap, the aformentioned Christmas Mouse and the Christmas Saison for her and the IPA, "too dark for stars" porter, Kolsch and Brown Ale for me. We really enjoyed them all and the other standouts inlcuded the Kolsch, brown ale and the Stouts. I liked the porter too. We'll be back if we ever swing back into Luray, even to just pick up cans. read more

We are somewhat craft beer snobs. In the past, we have specifically taken week long vacations focused on finding the best beer in an area. (We even traveled 3,000 miles to visit 16 breweries in 2 1/2 days.) COVID put a halt to our beer run vacations; we are so glad that, as more and more people get vaccinated, we are able to venture out. Hawksbill Brewing Company was a great introduction back into the world of craft beer. Enjoy the beers we tried. The saison was superb! If 1/2-stars were allowed, we would rate this place 4 1/2-stars just because the selection was limited. Though on the plus side, there was a nice range of styles and ABV. Too many places only have IPAs with high ABVs. Don't get me wrong, we love a well crafted IPA, but also like to be able to walk after indulging. We loved the atmosphere here! I'm a marathon runner and can see returning to the area for the Luray Half. I'll definitely want to celebrate finishing the race here. read more

While staying in Luray for the weekend, we checked out this brewery during a blistering hot day so that we could enjoy some cold beer and cool down. We were happy that we got to snag a high top inside with AC. We went around 1pm on a Saturday and nearly all of the tables and bar stools were taken. We came here thinking that there would be a food menu as other reviews pictured food and food trucks/vendors. We were disappointed to find out that they did not have any on site food, however the bartender provided us with a list of local places to order delivery from or to check out after we were done visiting the brewery. We opted to enjoy some brews and then go to West Main Market per the bartenders' suggestion. The bar had about 10-12 different beers on tap. It was a good selection or ales, IPAs, stouts, etc. I got a flight to try a variety of their offerings. I got the nitro brew, stout, red ale, and a sour ale. All of them were smooth and tasty. Interior of the brewery was modern industrial with an open floor plan so that you could see where they make all of the beers. Cool place to check out in this small town! Our favorite part was their "Pint it Forward" board which allowed patrons to pay for beers for other locals. It was such a neat niche for this small town. read more

After relocating from the Reston/Herndon, VA, area, where I had access to about 8 great breweries, it's a bit of a shock to move to a town with only one craft brewery---but Hawksbill Brewing helps fill the gap. It's the only place in town where you can camp out for hours to watch a game and not feel pressured to order food. There is no working kitchen here but a food truck offering Mexican fare is typically here Monday through Saturday (not on Sunday though). The beer is great - something for nearly everyone, from porters and stouts to IPAs to ales. Missing Sours and Goses* so if you're a fan of those styles you may have to try something else. They also have a N/A root beer for the DD in your group. The ladies behind the bar (there may be a male server too but I have not encountered one) are small town friendly and will happily recommend restaurants where you can pick up food, or hidden gems in town for the tourists. *It is possible they have Sours and Goses during the year as their beer menu changes often. But their mainstays appear to be their brown ale, cream ale, at least one IPA, a porter, and a stout. The Christmas Mouse is a very high ABV (over 10%) but it is delicious. read more

Friendly staff and good beer, a win-win. Stopped in here on our way through Luray to grab a couple of beers. They had an excellent and varied selection which was much appreciated as I do not like IPA's and usually find myself having to just deal at other breweries. I had the nitro as well as the black lager, both of which I thought were pretty good. I tried a few of the other beers and didn't find them to be as good as those two. We were able to grab some crowlers as well which I always like. One of the small issues I have with this place is the amount of flies outside. The garbage cans are right next to where the outside seating was, so you were constantly bombarded by them. I understand the need for a can outside, but maybe they could be placed a little farther away. It was also 2-3 of them and it was just a breeding ground. Just a thought for the future! read more

I learned about the existence of Hawksbill Brewing Co. just a few weekends ago from my friends that run Hopkins Ordinary Ale Works in Sperryville, VA. We had stopped in for yet another visit to Hopkins Ordinary Ale Works for their delicious brews - and they told us about Hawksbill Brewing Co. and that we should put it on our "to visit" list. So we did the very next day - Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, 2017. We arrived mid-afternoon during a steady rain. The place was packed when we arrived. Everyone was enjoying their beers and it was rather noisy. Lots of conversation and laughter! I ordered a full sampler flight: The Haymaker Cream Ale (5.9% ABV) Shenandoah Sunrise Porter v2 (5.6% ABV) Haymaker Cream Ale v2 (5.9% ABV) Shandy (3.0% ABV) Brown Cow Stout Nitro (6.2% ABV) Shenandoah Sunrise Porter (6.5% ABV) Hooray for Luray IPA (6.3% ABV) Farmer's Brown Ale (6.2% ABV) Overall, I enjoyed tasting their brews. I've not seen very many Cream Ales at Virginia craft breweries. Both Cream Ales were drinkable brews, good for summer time. The Shandy was way to sweet for me - so after tasting it, I passed it on to my friend Laurie - who happily finished it off. My absolute fave of the day was the "Hooray for Luray IPA." Nicely executed IPA and a fun name to boot! According to one of the other customers - the building used to be an appliance store before it morphed into a craft brewery. Luray is a cute town; I'm glad to see the brewery-craze has spread here as well. Hawksbill is a cute little place that is great for locals and tourists alike. The place has a laid-back vibe to it, with friendly servers and a nice assortment of brews. I was surprised to see them pushing the envelope on several of the servings, although I didn't try everything. I only had a flight of 4, although more were on tap. Next time I'll try the cream ales and shandys. Everything was very well priced as well. What I tried: Coffee Porter: Just like black coffee. Bet it would wake you up in the morning. After visiting Luray Caverns, we were looking for a place to sit outside, enjoy the beautiful weather, and have a beer. Five minutes away in downtown Luray is Hawksbill. It's in a non-descript building across from a firehouse. It has several picnic tables outside. Inside, there's a long bar. The bartender was a very nice person and let us try some of the beers before selecting one. They had several beers on tap and I selected a delicious stout. My cousin got the cream ale and she loved it. If I didn't have to drive two hours home, I would've had another. It was a very pleasant afternoon and I would stop there again. Not only was the beer delicious but the workers were friendly, knowledgeable, and helped to make the whole experience fun. The prices are reasonable, too! read more
