Wine flight

My wife and I decided to take the trip out here from Alexandria for a nice weekend getaway. Oktoberfest was going on at the brewery and an apple festival and several other events were happening that weekend, so we weren't able to find lodging close by. However, we decided to still go down and just make it a day trip. I am glad we decided to still go down. Everything was amazing! The views, the wine, the beer, the food truck, and the people! If I could give our experience six stars I sure would! I had never had a wine flight before. Those mini wine glasses were super cute! I was told that this was their first yield of bottled wine since they planted their grapes a few years ago. For them to be new, it was fantastic wine! And then we had the Oktoberfest flight. All of the beers were crisp and had very distinct flavors. Their descriptions fit them all to a T! We were very pleased with both flights to say the least. Since it was Oktoberfest, they had pony rides (we just rubbed her and gave her a little love), a food truck, very nice decorations and live music. I'm glad we got to experience the first Oktoberfest fest there. It will not be out last time visiting. If you want to meet great people while sipping amazing beer and/or wine, do yourself a favor and visit this spot.

Such nice people. We had a wonderful time enjoying the wine and beer flights. Views are great!

Nice group of mostly locals.

A fun spot to stop by for a beverage. In addition to being a brewing company, they also offer wine and cider tastings. Along with that they have food trucks and entertainment. It is so far off the beaten path most of the people there were locals and that was fine with us. For an even richer experience, you can book an hour-long horseback ride Fieldstone Trails that includes going past the Shotwell Run lodge and through their vineyards.

The views alone are worth a trip, especially if you aren't from the area and don't see sights like this daily. The selection of beer offerings was small, compared to other craft breweries in the area. Although they also have wine options, but none of us opted for wine. The service wasn't great. They were hesitant to let us sample anything before making a decision. And the server seemed annoyed that one person in my party changed her mind after he wrote down her original request. The prohibition ale is aptly named, it tastes like something from back in the day. We took a crowler of that one home. The maibock was my favorite. Delicious and very drinkable. I also got a Crowler if that one. Overall a good experience but I'd opt for other breweries in the area over this one for a second go-around.

I had a great time at Shotwell Run. The owners and staff are a pleasure. I enjoyed every beer I tasted during Oktoberfest - spoiler: I had all of them. The view from the back patio is everything you need when it's time to sit back and relax with a beer. If outside isn't favorable, there's also a large tasting room. I can't wait to head back out there this spring.

After relocating from the Reston/Herndon, VA, area, where I had access to about 8 great breweries,…read moreit's a bit of a shock to move to a town with only one craft brewery---but Hawksbill Brewing helps fill the gap. It's the only place in town where you can camp out for hours to watch a game and not feel pressured to order food. There is no working kitchen here but a food truck offering Mexican fare is typically here Monday through Saturday (not on Sunday though). The beer is great - something for nearly everyone, from porters and stouts to IPAs to ales. Missing Sours and Goses* so if you're a fan of those styles you may have to try something else. They also have a N/A root beer for the DD in your group. The ladies behind the bar (there may be a male server too but I have not encountered one) are small town friendly and will happily recommend restaurants where you can pick up food, or hidden gems in town for the tourists. *It is possible they have Sours and Goses during the year as their beer menu changes often. But their mainstays appear to be their brown ale, cream ale, at least one IPA, a porter, and a stout. The Christmas Mouse is a very high ABV (over 10%) but it is delicious.

The indoor seating area is wonderfully charming, with 200-year old beams and a great 'hidden treasure' feel. We tried all nine beers and, much to our surprise, were amazed by the quality and flavors. We have visited all the area breweries and this is one of the best. The Rauch-style beer and the stout were standouts, as were the two blond/lighter styles. The saison had a wonderful cucumber note from....you guessed...cucumbers! The beer garden is small but inviting under the shade of a massive elm tree. Spoke with the owner and staff who were very accommodating and gave us a short tour of the facility, its history and the history of the business. Owner was very humble and soft-spoken, but he certainly knows what he is doing and this business is now on our "highly recommend" list to friends visiting the area. In a region where generally characterless micro-breweries are sprouting up everywhere, this is a perfect example of 'quality' over 'quantity'! Well done!

The best drink in the tasting was their 8 yoa bourbon, very smooth and a little sweet, great for sipping or mixing. The vodka also tasted good in drinks. This was one of the best distillery I have tried. Service was very friendly and knowledgeable. The building is absolutely beautiful inside and if it's nice outside, the scenery behind the distillery is amazing with a creek running right past the back porch. The do offer charcuterie and other snacks to eat here when there are no food trucks. You are also allowed to bring your own food, which is what we did.. It was a chilly day and we followed the instructions to ring the bell when we were outside. Shout out to the folks here who provide the cute cat with a heated blanket to lay on during cold weather. Members of the staff quickly came by to let us in and we walked into a empty sitting area. To be fair, it was around 3:00pm on a Wednesday. The vibe inside is eclectic, homey, and comfortable. We grabbed a seat at a table near the fire. We had time to review menu. I picked a classic Whiskey Sour and my Mom got one of their warm whiskey cocktails. Both of us really enjoyed ours. We sipped and savored them and just enjoyed a bit of a respite from our road trip. We both got a bottle of their whiskey to take home with us. These aren't your standard whiskeys and they are definitely more expensive than what you'd probably get in the liquor store. We've been enjoying our purchases at home since our visit. Copper Fox is a nice stop and I'd recommend it to folks wanting a break and a beverage.
