My friend and I were there on a Friday as soon as they opened so we were the only ones there. The lady who helped us, one of the owners, was very friendly and after we ordered some food, ordered a tasting for each of us and found a table, she would bring over each wine, pour it, explain the wine and then let us enjoy the taste and eat a little bit before bringing us the next wine, never rushed us, said we could take as long as we wanted with each wine. The wines were good and the food was very good. The decor was wonderful, a lot of different artists' work displayed and for sale along with family quilts (NFS) hanging from the ceiling. A very sweet, winery pup named Maggie kept us company while we enjoyed our visit. A very pleasant experience. read more

The picnic tables had a lovely view of the farm and mountains. And we're well equipped with sun umbrellas. If you wanted to, there was plenty of room in the climate controlled main house. The food was tasty and accommodating to those who may be vegetarian. And it's dog friendly! A great place to eat and relax after hiking nearby. read more

We stopped in a Blue Quartz Winery one afternoon. They had 3 wines to taste, plus a cider. I tasted all of them: 2018 Viognier 2017 Merlot 2017 Cabernet Franc Thornton River Cider The wines are nice - if a tad on the "young" tasting side, I think as the winery matures, so too will the wines. The staff was very nice. There is a ton of seating inside, a fireplaces, lots of games, plus an outdoor patio. Blue Quartz is a winery/brewery combo. I arrived a few weeks after their soft opening. Luckily for me I came in a lull between the crowds, since a friend & I had the place to ourselves! The scenery is really nice, as you would expect from being located not far from Shenandoah Park. They have a vineyard, although it's still on the small side. They also serve cider (or at least a single cider; more to come later?). 4 acres of Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot are planted. The Viognier had your traditional honeysuckle notes. The Merlot was earthy, while the Merlot was full bodied. But the cider was my favorite. The building looks Amish-built, but actually was made by one of the owners and his son. Very spacious inside, as well as dog friendly. On top of the wine they have a brewery; I had a small flight of beers on top of my flight of wine. So plenty to chose from! read more

Came to this winery as it was just a mile from my Airbnb and what a great location with great views. One thing to keep in mind though, beware of the speed bumps going into the winery. They aren't easy to see coming in and there are no signs but they are quite bumpy. The wines were all pretty tasty with Merlot being our favorite. We also had the beer flight: Hefeweizen, Octoberfest, Red ale, Oatmeal Stout. The hefeweizen was way too light that it made me worry what GAL (Got Anything Light) tasted like. The oatmeal stout tasted a bit flat but the Octoberfest and Red ales were our favorites. read more

My husband and I came in yesterday -no one else was in the room- and approached the bar. The young man was on his phone, finished his text and came up to us and just looked at us. He never said hello or welcome. I had to initiate by saying "I've never been here before ". Very cut and dry explanation of what the offered. I saw nothing of interest and decided to leave. I'm also assuming the owner was in the establishment, who was with his dog, never spoke as well. Won't be coming back here. We went to DuCard where they were much more accepting of US and they had live music. read more

We found Blue Quartz from Harvest Hosts (a program that allows RVers to stay at participating wineries, breweries, distilleries, etc). It's a literal gem! We ordered a flight of beers plus their homemade grapefruit radler. We like to get flights wherever we go to get a lay of the land and decide what we want more of. That was hard here because all the ones we tried (golden, kolsch, Hefeweizen, red ale, radler) were surprisingly on point. Luckily the decision was made easier when we discovered the Peach Sangria. The best part is that they gave us ice on the side so that the entire pitcher isn't watered down (and thus ruined) by melted ice. I definitely want to come back someday and try their ciders and other wines but two pitchers of Sangria served us well on a warm summer evening. The venue itself was nice, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The weather was beautiful so we sat outside to enjoy the band and breathtaking views. I want to give a sixth star just for the high quality TP (not being sarcastic - it was like three ply, top notch). This winery is very dog friendly. However, if your DOG isn't exactly dog friendly, like ours can be when provoked, keep an eye on him/her. The owners' dogs roam around freely. But no complaints here because the website forewarned us about the dogs and they own the place so ‍ Management is a big indicator of the feel of a place. The owners Chris and Hal appeared very much in love with each other and with their farm winery, which is refreshing and heartwarming to see. Might seem weird to say in a Yelp review but I think it makes a big difference when you see the ownership/management truly enjoying themselves. read more

Jimm from Sharp Rock highly recommended this place. I wonder if I wandered into the wrong winery/brewery. The staff working there seemed wholly indifferent. No counter tastings. The woman who sold me the glass was friendly if robotic. The younger guy working there could have cared less about anything but looking at his phone. The wine, at least the Viognier that I tried, was decent. The setting outside is beautiful. But given the lack of enthusiasm and total disinterest in customers, I will not be back. read more

Dog friendly and a perfect place for couples when one may like beer and the other likes wine. Blue Quartz has both! Blue Quartz puts out amazing wine and Shotwell Brewery has great beer. Stayed in a tiny house and went to an amazing winery! Who could ask for a better weekend?!?!?! A few weeks ago we traveled from DC to stay in a tiny house through Getaway DC and be off the grid but realized there were so many good wineries in the area. We ended up at a not so great winery before making our way to Blue Quartz. We were pleasantly surprised to see a live folk band and were happy that both wine and beer flights were offered. The flights were affordable and delicious and the service was great. Outdoor seating only was socially distanced and felt safe. We bought a bottle to enjoy there and took a bottle home. We will be back our next trip to the area. read more

We first came here because my partner is a geologist and we liked the name. Turns out the vineyard was planted atop a deposit of beautiful blue quartz. This place is actually a winery, brewery, and cidery combined. So it will appeal to most everyone. The beer is stylistically spot on, not incredibly unique, but you won't be disappointed. The "GAL" is your best bet if you're looking for an easy-drinking, light beer. The wine is really quite good, I shared a bottle of the 2017 Cab Franc with the owners, and it was full-bodied with delightful notes of plum, tobacco, and vanilla with good acidity. The cider though, holy cow! If you're in search of good cider, look no further. Everything from the sweet, to the traditional is excellent. Hal is even thinking a bit out of the box and getting into making some fruited and hopped ciders! On the weekends they'll have live music and very tasty food trucks. Also, you feel very safe here during covid. The entire staff is vaccinated and wearing masks. Most people are outside and everyone is spread apart. It's also a beautiful place to watch a sunset after a hike up Old Rag! Also, dogs are welcome and generally the owners have a couple of "free range" dogs around. read more

Sweet little winery outside of the Sperryville area, not far from popular hiking spots. Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. Plenty of outdoor space to sit and the views are beautiful. They have food on certain days (call or check their website for details) and delicious snacks available as well. The wine was just ok...not bad but not great. They serve beer as well. I'd stop back again just for the scenic, country vibes. read more

This place is extraordinary, and Hal and his wife couldn't be kinder. We stopped by about a week ago and tried nearly every wine and beer in the place. The wines are interesting, varied, and affordable. The beers are unusual and tasty. They had a food truck and live music - pretty much our best evening since Covid started. More to the point, Hal was happy to stop at our table and tell us his story: how he came to the area, what got him interested in wine, how he handles the starlings! I mentioned my interest to him, and he followed up by email with information on winemaking classes. Truly a 5-star place with 5-star people running it! read more

My family and I loved being at the winery. This was a great place for bringing your kids because there is so much open space for kids to run around while you're sipping good wine. Best experience at a brewery this year. Stopped here after hiking Old Rag and seeing the open sign at the base of the hill and stopping on a whim and am really glad that we did. The outdoor set up was excellent. They have 4 fireplaces with adirondack chairs around them, and a covered seating area with heaters (in addition to more seating around picnic tables, bar etc.). It was a cloudy, mid-50s kinda day and we were really comfortable around the fires. Did the beer flight, all were great beers but the porter was my favorite. They typically aren't my thing but theirs was a little lighter than most and it was perfect for me. The owners were super kind and social. They have 3 adorable Shelties that were running around the day we were there. Bought the porter, a cider, and asked for the mulled wine on our way out. They were not allowed to sell the mulled wine due to ABC law so they sold us the wine that goes in it and then the owner took the time to write out the recipe. Having it for Thanksgiving and its immediately become a family favorite. read more

My family and I had a wonderful time at the winery/brewery today. We tried all four beers, the cider, and a glass of cab sauv. The cider was just the right amount of sweetness and the cab sauv was really smooth. My favorite beer was the hoppy trails, which is the pale ale option. read more

We visited this spot while in town for spring break with our children. Laid back place with non-screen entertainment for the kids - chess, cards, open space outside, a cement pad for playing pass with a soccer ball, etc. The wine, sangria, ciders were all very good and I enjoyed the flight option which allowed me to taste everything. My husband enjoyed the beer and we both appreciated that we could get wine and beer at the same place. The menu was very limited but had something for everyone in my family. The food was all very good but the charcuterie plate and the cheese plate were a bit overpriced. Our first visit was on a Thursday evening and the crowd was younger (30's & 40's) and the place had a quiet and relaxing vibe. Our second visit was on a cold and sporadically rainy Friday. There was a musical duet performing along their 50 closest 60-70 year old friends all packed inside; we literally felt like we walked into someone's private Easter/Birthday party. Since the folks inside weren't giving off a welcoming vibe when we interrupted their party we chose a spot outside; it was chilly and there were no fire pits lit but we made due. Overall, very impressed with this place but might think twice about visiting on a Friday when there is music and chilly weather as I'm not sure if the "following" of all of the musical guests in this area will always draw such a crowd which made the atmosphere feel much less inviting. read more

We stumbled upon the winery after hiking Old Rag Mountain and could not be more happy that we did! The place is lovely and the owners even lovelier. They were so kind and personable and we enjoyed our small chat with them. The views were beautiful and the heaters outside made for a comfortable afternoon sipping wine, cider, and beer! The cider was delicious, not overly sweet, but very flavorful. The petit Verdot was my favorite of the wines. I'm not a beer drinker, but my husband enjoyed what he had. Great experience, especially for a recent upstart. All staff (owners included) were friendly. I loved the two red wines. My two friends also enjoyed the white and cider (I just don't happen to like the white variety or cider regardless of winery). Tasting room is shared with Shotwell Run Brewing Company. My friends said that the 4 beers featured were very diverse thus there would likely be at least one that would appeal to a beer lover (unfortunately, I do not care for beer of any description). They both liked three of the 4. And each had a different "favorite". The free freshly popped popcorn was a real treat. The Little Country Store was doing BBQ on site...Don is a gourmet on the grill. The tasting room is simple but beautiful. Fantastic view from patio. Been to many adult beverage makers throughout Virginia and Maryland. Was so pleasantly surprised to find such quality at a location less than 15 miles from my home! read more
