My husband had pretzel bites and he keeps bragging about the sauce. He is not easy to please with this as he doesn't like things too spicy or not enough. This new Bar & Grill in MacGregor Village is a hidden gem, so LOOK for it, cause it's not easy to spot. It's across from Donovan's. Tucked behind Hot Shots Billiards. They've only been open since February, but they've already perfected the food. Specialty burgers are HUGE, and so juicy. We both loved the Argentinian. His with Tots and me with Onion Rings. All super good and very rich. Do know if you want a smaller burger, you can create your own. Other folks were raving over the Brazilian Burger, the Steak Sandwich, the Champagne Chicken and the Bistro Steak. I got a peek at the meatballs and wings and those looked great too. This place is GIANT. Long bar (where we sat), lots of tables. There was a band setting up on a large stage. And a back room has recliners and games. We came to see a band... and a really good one at that! Being our 1st time there we made reservations for 8, expecting the main act to start at 9. Drinks took way too long to arrive, and when the food finally came, it was disappointing at best. Then we found out there was an opening act--Elvis. And I'm not trying to be overly critical, but let's just say it was rough on both the eyes and ears. To top it off, the band's start time got pushed to 9:30. Thankfully, they were absolutely **amazing**--the kind of talent that makes you forget the mediocre food and poorly mixed drinks for a little while. The burgers were incredibly good but we felt like they had to butcher the cow to prepare the burger (meaning it took a very long time for our order to be cooked and served). Had I not been on the clock I'd have said the burgers were worth the wait. The onion rings were way overcooked. The ambiance was woody and clublike at the same time which I like as opposed to the less appealing industrial look. The only person serving was the bartender, and she was not particularly attentive. No refills on our drinks/waters and being that we were the only people in there for lunch, I would have thought the service would have been great. When I walked to the bar to pay the bill, she didn't realize what I was there for, she thought I was someone coming in to order drinks at the bar. This is what epitomizes inattentive. Most people have an hour for lunch during the week, and well, we were in the restaurant for well over an hour and had to wolf down the burgers to get back to the office as quickly as possible. Bottom line: I like Back Then Bar and Grill, and say 4.5 stars for these guys. Good service and delicious food for the most part. A good entry to the MacGregor Village lineup. The Deets: I saw a fellow Yelper review this place that is near my office, so I had to come find out what it was about. Back Then is located in MacGregor Village, back in the very back where Tony's Oyster Bar used to be located. Inside is a large bar area to the left, spacious area for seating, a stage like area for live entertainment (I have heard of trivia and karaoke nights), with a host table at the door that had a "Please Seat Yourself" sign. Even further back through a doorway to the left past the bar is a game/billiards area as well. One will notice a small outside seating area as you go in the door as well. I've had two visits so far, one at a table and the next one sitting at the bar. My first visit, I was determined to try as many things as possible and on reflection it was quite the carb fest. I tried their tots and chose to have cheese/bacon on them...they were great as you would expect tots to be, enjoyed them. Next, their loaded potato soup was up. This soup was wonderful...not bland at all but full of savory flavor and not your usual potato soup entry. For my entree, I went with their Champagne Chicken selection with fries instead of the mashed potatoes. Their Champagne Chicken is described in the menu as "fried chicken cutlet with a side of mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables topped with our homemade champagne mushroom gravy." This entree was great, the flavors worked together well as as you would expect when reading the description, I liked it. My second visit, I wanted to try out the burgers so when sitting at the bar, I ordered the "Build Your Own Burger" with fries. They have specialty burgers that may be larger in size but the size of the build-your-own was just perfect for what I wanted. The burger tasted awesome, just juicy enough without being messy and very flavorful. The fries (which I enjoyed on both trips) were crunchy on the outside and delicious as well. With two visits under my belt, I will go with 4.5 stars...but why not 5? Well, each visit, I also got a side Caesar salad with my meal choices. The first one, well, was not a positive experience, left a bad taste in my mouth and I had to stop after a few bites unfortunately. However, I wanted to see if it was just that one visit so I got another side Caesar salad my second visit and I am happy to say it was just as one would expect it and it was delicious, I finished it completely. Each time my server and bartender were very nice, attentive, positive, and provided good service. I have to say for the most part, I have enjoyed my meals here at Back Then Bar and Grill and will be seeing these guys more in the future. read more

Some of the best bar food in the Triangle. The recipes are creative, but not so frou-frou that it gets away from being real solid bar food. The Brazilian and Argentinian are examples of how to make a burger interesting while still being a good solid burger. Same is true of the cocktails -- my wife and I have explored the menu and they've all been fun and very well made. Nothing but compliments about the service. The building is really impressive. Nice large stage which is perfect for live music, two bars, plenty of comfortable nooks and crannies for couples and smaller groups. I haven't been there in the evening but it seems perfectly set up for a Saturday night crowd. The only downsides are that it's slightly hard to find on the back side of the building, and feels a bit cavernous when it's slow. I debated giving it 4 stars because of that empty-feeling ambience during slow hours, but I'm guessing it earns back the 5th star by being ideally set up for nightlife. read more

I'm sorry I really wanted to like the new place and all the changes the new owners made. We have been 3 or 4 times and nothing has changed. First let's talk basic drinks. Zero alcohol and not cheap. Same as prior owners. ‍ Service has gotten better. I'll give them that. But definitely hit or miss. Food-is horrendous and gross. Officially never eating there again. I don't understand how hard it is to provide decent food especially with new chefs! This place is turning into a new version of Tony's. what happened to this place? I took my wife there last night to listen to loud music and was completely shocked. At the way. The acted. He was extremely rude to several people in line and spent five minutes hitting on an older lady in front of us to hold up the line for several minutes. I've never met a more rude man in my life. Our first visit to Back Then on a recommendation of Fish and Chips. The onion rings had been reviewed well, so opted for Fish and Rings. The fish was good, but a pretty limited portion. Th rings were bountiful, but way overdone and very oily. Spouse had a burger and fries. The fries were good, but the "medium" burger was decidedly "well done", and was uninspiring. Service was friendly and attentive, but suffered from a massive party of 30 who came for drinks, but all ate too. Ambiance is loud as a baseline. They do run a nighty special which livens things up. On a Saturday night it is difficult to get any service at the bar. One would think they would know it is busy and have more people working. I've been to this place three times now, and every time I felt like it was a disappointment. It's a fun place, they really are trying hard to make it a venue, and I love the dueling pianos, but this place has so many flaws! First the food. The first two times I came here the food was so overseasoned it was barely edible. This last time I decided just to get fish and chips because I knew they wouldn't be able to overseason that, but the problem was the fish didn't taste all that fresh. My second big complaint is that you can't find a price for the beer anywhere! It's ridiculous, they have a link to their untapped account, which is fine if it actually told you how much the beer cost! And the bartender doesn't know either! The only way to know how much a beer is is for him to ring it up. I've given this place three chances, each time giving it the benefit of the doubt, but I don't think I'm going to keep spending my money here when there are plenty of other options. Was the first time visiting since they've been open. A completely different look from the previous restaurant - and that is a compliment! You cannot even tell it was a seafood bar before! We had drinks and apps only but the menu had a lot of good choices. Pretzel bites were good and the wings were good but it would be nice to have a plain "Buffalo sauce" option. We went to Back Then Bar and Grill for the second time yesterday, and the food was great, AGAIN. We need this place to be there for a LONG time, so PLEASE check them out. In the two times we've been there since we found out about them, we, and those we were with, had the Touchdown [appetizer sampler] Platter, Coconut Shrimp, Fish and Chips [twice], BTBG Chicken sandwich [both Fried and Grilled], Quesadilla Burger, Grown-up Grilled Cheese, and Steak Sando. Everyone LOVED their entrees. The Tater Tots, Onion Rings, and Fries were very good as well. HOWEVER, the most surprising and amazing item we had was the Reese's Peanut Butter Pie; if there's any remaining when you get there [ask] order it IMMEDIATELY so you are ensured of having it for dessert!!! In addition, the service by everyone was terrific; you were made to feel like they really cared for your patronage. Thank you Alexis, and the others. The place is HUGE, with 50 TV's, Games [darts, pool], Trivia, Karaoke, and more., There's a LONG bar, lots of room for big parties, and you're not back to back with others... Stoped into this place after going to the State Fair. Staff were very nice and our server Alexis was very knowledgeable and friendly. Wings were big and flavorful. Chicken cesar salad was very good, the chicken was a little dry but other than that the salad was great! This place was absolutely fantastic. Tons of televisions broadcasting sports everywhere, good food, great people. They have multiple dart boards, and a small game room in the back. Stopped in for a late night dinner, and this place was sub-par. Ordered some pretzel bites and coconut shrimp with tots. The only thing that I would order again were the tots. They were very crispy. The shrimp was served with a sauce so spicy, you would think grown men would compete in a hot wing contest with it (and I actually really like spice). I couldn't eat it. I read good reviews on Yelp & was excited to find a new place for a good burger & food. Unfortunately everything we had was very mediocre. The menu said the burger was a half pound & what came out looked & tasted like it was a bulk buy package you would find in the freezer section. Very few ingredients on the burger, I think mine had 2 mushrooms & the thinest piece of cheese I've ever seen.The Mac n cheese was dry & not very flavorful & the appetizer pretzel was hard & the cheese sauce was just ok.
