First time trying Back a Yard and Carribean cuisine. Got the jerk chicken and pork combo and really enjoyed the pork!! Also tried the cola champagne :) the shop is nice and the staff are so friendly! Would come again.
Still love this place and my oxtail! Just had to dock a star as the inconsistency of the heat and the pork being dry! I was so looking into having the oxtail so I had some delivered but it was just too spicy for me. Yes I had to water it down to eat it but it was still good. Same goes for the pork. Some days it nice and moist and some days it just dry. Also my fritter was over fried.
Had the jerk chicken and the Jamaican fried corn bread. The jerk chicken was not dry at all, and packed so much flavor. It came with rice, beans, and fried plantains which were also delightful. The fried corn bread was delicious, a lot was given for a single order, very filling!
Love a local Caribbean restaurant! generous portions, beautiful sauce. The service, though... young dude was too busy checking his phone to pay attention to our order. Rare one-off, but annoying.
This placed really surprised me. It's a hidden gem with some delicious food and great value! The oxtail is super tender and I love how much flavor is packed into the sauce, especially the jerk sauce! The plantains that come in the boxes are amazing, but remember to drink water with this meal because it is very salty.
We got here about 11:20am. Restaurant was clean and smells really good. Service was great. Food was so delicious and flavorful. I got the jerk chicken and beef oxtail. Both were tender and juicy. Plantains were also fried perfectly. My son got the BBQ combo w ribs, chicken and hotlinks. All fresh and very delicious! First time having Caribbean food and i can honestly say, it's worth it!!! 10/10 for this first time visit!!
Finally got the chance to try this place with a friend over dinner on a Friday night! I've been to their location in Campbell but have always missed out on this spot in the east San Jose area. Back A Yard is part of the lion market plaza, so it's unique in its food service and has lots of parking for its diners. It's a medium sized space with tables for solo diners, couples, and groups of 4. Colorful murals with their logo, lots of personality, and great scents wafting from the kitchen. When I entered, they were around already 10 people dining and enjoying their food; everyone was enjoying the food that's for sure. I ordered their jerk chicken + oxtail combo. It was about a 7 minute wait for my food and it was served to my table. The food had a beautiful presentation with lots of food from 4 plantains, 3 pieces of oxtail, rice and beans, and 2 pieces of chicken. It was so filling, meat was so juicy and tender, lots of sauce at the bottom of the plate, rice was warm and soft. The plantains were soft and perfectly sweet and fried. Great price for the quantity and quality of food. I had to take some leftovers home so my family could try! I'm definitely coming here again if my family is shopping around this area.
For two people, we ordered so much! We wanted to try the jerk chicken and oxtail combo, the 3 meat bbq, and the fried corn bread. It was soooo much food, but it was only like ~$50 for all that! We also got the mango passionfruit drink. I loOooved the jerk chicken, but my boyfriend loved the bbq ribs. The oxtail was incredibly flavorful, but it was probably our least favorite. Probably can order anything, and it would be pretty good! It came out super fast too!!
My friends were raving about Back A Yard from their work days so I had to stop in for lunch to give this Jamaican joint a try. I ordered the Jerk Chicken & Jerk Pork combo and a couple other friends ordered the Jerk Salmon & Beef Oxtail combo, so I got to sample all of the meats. The chicken, pork, and oxtail were all amazingly flavorful and tender, and the salmon was surprisingly not dry and cooked well! My friends really loved the oxtail, but my favorite was probably the chicken or pork; you really can't go wrong with any of them! Each combo came with generous portions of meat, rice and beans mixed together, and 4 fried plantains which really helped to balance out the strong flavors of the meat. This is an order-at-the-counter establishment with a fair amount of indoor seating and lovely Caribbean decor, notably a huge mural on one wall. Although we fully expected to pick up our food at the counter when ready, the cashier graciously delivered each of our plates to the table we were sitting, with napkins and utensils included. He even brought us all water cups! Phenomenal service and even better food!

Stopped in for a plate and soup, was just really feeling something comforting, hearty and warm. Got the Oxtail and Jerk Chicken plate and a cup of their Soup of the Day which was Chicken and Pumpkin. The food portions here go crazy, super flavorful and they give so many pieces of incredibly tender oxtail and chicken. Love the beans and rice along with the plantains. The soup came with chicken pieces, pumpkin and corn in a clear broth but was so perfect for the cold weather. I love soup and this clear broth soup was delicious. The staff is super friendly and the service is quick. Food came out piping hot and quickly. Great portions here and honestly pricing is super reasonable! Always a good meal dining here.
I have a bone to pick with you. I want to try many of the other menu items, but the jerk chicken is so good that I keep ordering it with the other jerk items. How am I supposed to try something else if the jerk chicken is so good that I have to keep ordering it?

Inside was clean, not too busy, staff was average nothing special, food was fresh and ready in 15 minutes. The chicken was moist, charred and so good. Beans and rice were as expected, just fine. The plantains were caramelized and cooked perfectly. I loved the corn festivals - very fresh, crispy and hot. I was not a fan of the Mac n cheese personally but my husband liked it. I thought it was kind of greasy and not too flavorful. The pineapple cake was disappointing to me. Cake was super dense and on the dry side so it crumbled a bit. Was def my least favorite. I will def come back. I have actually been to the downtown San Jose location quite a few times and never did a review. This location is much better and fresher. read more
We stopped to charge the car and luckily found this restaurant that looked decent to have dinner at while we wait. Super casual spot. The service was super friendly and accommodating, like talking to family. There were so many good options and the prices were affordable! Especially, for Caribbean food. My partner kept telling me how good of a find this place was and I felt accomplished, LOL! We got excited because this is probably one of our favorite cuisines. We ordered the goat curry, mac and cheese, mixed veggies, collard greens, vegetable curry, beef patty, and two orders of fried cornmeal bread... all for a family of 3 (the 3rd human being a 14 month old hahaha). I thought I can give the baby the vegetable curry, but it turned out to be too spicy so hence why we got the mac and cheese and plain mixed veggies. Everything was fire! Maybe with the exception of the collard greens because that tasted like it was cooked in tabasco or something. Their juices were good too! Portions are generous. Luckily, we had leftovers to enjoy the next day. The beef patty was yummy, but I do wish it came with some type of dipping sauce. All the dishes tasted authentic, I felt like I was back in Jamaica. Everything comes in to-go containers which is convenient. They provide paper plates if you want to dine there. The restaurant is maintained well and clean. I hope they expand across East Bay area as it seems many of their locations are mainly in South Bay/Peninsula. read more

I went to Back A Yard Grill after a volunteer event a little pass 11am. I was surprised to see they've already had folks place orders shortly after opening. I went with a group of around 11 people, our orders came into go bowls with serving utensils. I personally ordered their Jerk Salmon Plate which was recommended by a friend. The food was great, flavorful, and filling. I do have to say that their small sauce is a bit salty with a kick, so I only used it occasionally. Additionally, I tried their Sorrel ginger drink which was good as well -- it reminded me of jamaica / hibiscus. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and would love to try other dishes in the future. read more

This was my first time at Back A Yard, but I have been to their sister company Coconuts in Palo Alto many times, and I'll tell you... this place did not disappoint. The combo plates are worth it, with their rice and plantains! They are mouth watering good. The service here was quick, although I did take out. The place itself was clean and had a lot of seating available. If you're a big back in the South Bay looking for some Caribbean food, I highly recommend coming here! read more

Love Back a yard grill, they have a really good rice and beans. Fries are okay, they're crinkle cut and not as crunchy as I'd like them. Cole slaw is alright too. So I always get a combo as the sides are the rice and beans with fried sweet plantains. The curry goat and oxtail is a great combo read more
Delicious food - I love the jerk chicken and oxtail! The staff are always cool and friendly. They bring your food to the table which is nice. The hot sauce used to be free but it appears not to be anymore. :-( The prices are on the high side but there aren't many Jamaican or Caribbean spots around. read more

While in town visiting some family, we decided to Door Dash Back A Yard because my brother in law swore by it. I ordered the Jerk Chicken and Salmon Combo Plate plus we ordered a side of Macaroni and Cheese and Collard Greens. We also ordered a Chicken Patty to share and the Pineapple Upside Down Cake and Key Lime Pie. I really liked the combo plate - I thought it was very flavorful with the perfect amount of heat. I really enjoyed the Chicken Patty as well, but I wasn't a big fan of the Collard Greens and the Mac and Cheese was decent. I also thought the Pineapple Upside Down Cake was a bit on the dry side as well. I can't really comment on the service or ambiance since this was a delivery, but I would definitely like to visit next time we are in the area. Overall, I really liked the main dish and would order again or try some new items! read more
Not enough stars to give here. I have been a fan of Back A Yard ever since I discovered the downtown location years ago. This location offers a place to sit down with tables and chairs rather than only takeout. The cashier is very friendly and will offer recommendations if you need help combing through the menu. The oxtail is a must have since the meat is so tender and falls off the bone. The jerk sauce is out of this world. Plantains are cooked to perfection. This is a must try spot read more

Ok hear me out. This spot is it. Extremely affordable with great food. Well wait what I ordered was great. I still need to go back to sample the rest of the menu. Oxtails 5/5 tender, and seasoned well. Mac&cheese 5/5 nice portion, seasoned perfectly and cheese to noodle ratio good. Rice&beans 5/5 seasoned good, cooked perfectly. Plantains 6/5 I didn't even like plantains. But the ones I jad here were so good. They brought the whole dish together. Jerk chicken 5/5 Some damn good bird. That's all I need to say. Service 5/5 My only true gripe is the lack of dining space. Nothing inside and like 3 tables on the outside. No where near a deal breaker for me, but I wouldn't mindthat little comfort. First time here saw foodies on social media eating this and wanted to try. Pretty clean spot but not too friendly. Bad vibes once walked in. Asked her what kind of juice they have after I ordered and she looked over at the juice and panning back towards me telling me like I was supposed to know. Got our jerk chicken and oxtail. Chicken dry but oxtail was tender. But the sauce made everything pretty salty. I would try other things next time but maybe at a different location where it's a bit friendlier read more
My workplace catered this place and I thought it was delicious, so I had to come give the restaurant a try. The place is small and has limited seating, but I think most people get takeout here, so I didn't have a problem sitting and eating. The staff were very friendly and let me swap the coleslaw with rice/beans no problem. Jerk Chicken: Delicious! Super tender and the flavor was amazing. There is an oily sauce on the chicken and extra on the side that made this so good. The dish comes with fried plantains as well and were a perfect pairing to the chicken. This is a must get! Boneless Pork Plate: I love the BBQ flavor of the pork. The portion was huge as well. The BBQ sauce is similar to American BBQ and I was all for it. The pork was super tender and there were some fatty pieces that bursted with flavor with every bite. read more

I was sad that the DTSJ location closed, but so happy there's still one locally for me to enjoy all the yummy jerk goodness. My wife loves the Jerk Pork, but my favorite is always the Jerk Oxtail and Jerk Chicken Combo. The spicy Jerk Pork and Chicken are grilled to perfect, moist, and flavor packed. It complements the subtly sweet and savory rice and peas, and the sweet plantains very well. The tender and gelatinous oxtail is one of my favorite bites in SJ and best enjoyed with a Red Stripe Beer! They also have yummy traditional BBQ options for you to choose from. Great place for Jamaican cuisine! The herbs and spices used to season each dish is packed with flavor. The oxtail's officially my favorite along with their jerk chicken (both have very tender meat and generously seasoned). My partner and I ordered a sangria and it's a little dangerous. They make it themselves and has that nice sweet and tarte flavor. There's a hint of booze towards the end but not overpowering. The sauce/gravy might look A LOT - but it balanced out with their rice and peas. The plantain also makes for a nice treat afterwards. Overall, very filling and worth the price. read more
First time trying Jamaican/Carribean food & it definitely won't be my last! I got the jerk chicken/beef oxtail combo as my entree and also tried the Jamaican Beef Patty. The combo comes with rice and plantains on the side. Both the jerk chicken and oxtail were super flavorful in their own ways. Both were also cooked perfectly, so tender and meaty. Oxtail literally falls off the bone. I liked the rice infused with beans too despite not liking beans, because it really all tastes good when you eat it with the gravies and sauces on the meat. Only thing I didn't like was the plantains, but I've never been a fan anyways. Also, the plate was a tad too salty after I kept eating. Jamaican Beef Patty was tasty! Flaky on the outside, savory beef filling with a touch of sweetness from what I think is onion. $18.95 for a plate is a bit on the more expensive end for a fast food/takeout type of chain but don't be fooled! The amount of food you get is well worth it. It was very very filling and could definitely last me two meals. Service here was very friendly and helpful. Very casual spot to eat, and I see lots of people ordering to-go. read more

This is my second time ever trying Caribbean food and this place had such juicy and flavorful chicken and oxtail. I like that it was easy to eat, almost fall off the bone. These plantains were exactly how I like em, soft and sweet with some tanginess and crisps outer layer. I'm not a huge fan of beans and I prefer that my rice didn't soak in the oil/ juice. The place could do some spring cleaning, there was a huge spider web in the corner which prompted us to move tables. read more

What are their hours?
They close at 8:30 on weekdays if I'm not mistaken. I'm not completely sure about Friday. They are pretty strict on that closing hour as they have to clean up and close down. Do your best to come well before 8:30.
