Their prices are good (not super low but reasonable). If you are looking for foils, color, or anything more complicated than a trim I would suggest paying the extra money and going elsewhere. I went to Babalouise based solely on Yelp reviews and I am so glad I did! The staff are all nice and welcoming. I love the convenient Ballard location. I've been getting my hair cut by Eunice for about 5-6 months. She does a great job. She listens to what I want and, since she is the expert, she gives some input to explain why my requests may or may not work on my hair type and styling preferences. Every time I leave Babalouise I have a huge smile on my face as I'm walking to my car. And I can't help but check myself out in each window or mirror I encounter on my way home :) read more

I just went to Babalouise for the first time today, and had a really great experience. I like the way Paul S. describes it. "...a salon without the precious salon-feel." It's very relaxed and unpretentious. My cut was $23 and I got a very friendly stylist by the name of Chad. I told him I wanted my hair short to keep cooler in the summer. I have very curly hair and gave him freedom to do what he wanted. He came up with a great layered cut that he pretty much did entirely with a razor. I've had cuts with razors before that were lousy and very uneven but the cut looks straight even when it's wet. Three cheers for Babalouise! read more

I've been to BaBaLouise twice. I had a nice first visit. My stylist was fast, friendly, and affordable. The second visit wasn't that great. I made my second appointment online, and received an email confirmation. When I arrived, the receptionist didn't believe that I had received an email confirmation, and was confrontational about it. I asked if I should leave or reschedule. She spoke to my stylist, and she said that they would be able to see me. I waited about 30-40 minutes beyond my scheduled appointment--or, should I say "scheduled appointment." During the wait, the receptionist spoke with other people about my appointment and how our "wires must have got crossed," and "she didn't know how it happened," and "she didn't know I was coming," and "this has never happened before." She wouldn't let it go. It was weird and very uncomfortable. She even brought it up after my service. The stylist (which was different from my first) was nice. But, my new do was so-so, and it was double the price of my first haircut. I'm looking for a new salon. read more

I moved to the area recently from out of state and was a little daunted about finding a local salon that had stylists that knew how to do a good blonde dye job (fellow blondes can probably relate - the struggle is real!) I'm so happy I randomly stopped in and inquired. Gaia does an awesome job with blonde hair! I've been there twice to see her. She did great blending my roots into my old color and warming the tone up a bit as well as adding lowlights. She's gotten the color right where I want it. It looks great and my hair actually feels better and healthier (it's been damaged pretty bad through processing and she's done a great job at making sure I don't continue breaking my hair). The service I received was an all-star eyelash extension. I'm approaching month two now. It was a time during which I rolled around in dirt, dust, horse-shit, ocean water (with pulverizing waves) and probably some more horse shit. All this was experienced in the hot, sticky climates of Costa Rica. I was worried because if something went wrong Id be left in the hands of strangers to fix my gorgeous, natural looking eyelashes. To my great surprise, not only did my lashes hold up, but they were totally low maintenance! My -now only- girl was so meticulous about separation, proper spacing and after-care that my eye lashes withheld my crazy life style and low-key-maintenance preferences. I was never short of compliments and hardly anyone had any idea these were fake! I brushed -with my complimentary eyelash brush- in the mornings after sleep and after showers. I hardly even brushed them after swimming in the ocean, riding on horseback or hitch-hiking on motorcycles! They were so well assembled that I could just ease them into place with the sides of my fingers if need be and continue on. With previous experiences at other locations my lashes would clump together or fashion themselves in berserk webs on my lids. I could hardly ever untangle them! Even now after a lot of new lash growth, what's left looks natural and pretty. I am dead broke from my trip or I would have been in the salon for a touch-up once my feet grazed Seattle soil. I will only go to Babalouise for lashes again. Ever. Unless the lash lady leaves. Then Ill have to try their other services lol. Please note, I can't for the life of me remember my girl's name but once I find it I will post it. It's not that she was not memorable it is that I am total shit with names. Three years ago I moved to Seattle thinking 'OMG, who's gonna cut my hair now?'. By the time I finally went to a hair salon my hair had grown out so much that the stylist couldn't recognize my cut anymore. So I described what I wanted and how my hair used to be cut back in Europe. She said 'ok', started cutting and it was ... wrong. I tried several others over the last three years, all with the same result. Even my friend, a professional stylist, who gave me a haircut twice, never got it right. Crystal S. has been doing my hair for the last four years and I absolutely love her! I would follow her anywhere! I definitely appreciate this salon much more than her last! It has a very modern yet edgy feel and Crystal had me in on and early morning when her and I could just girl talk without anyone around! She makes you feel comfortable, she always remembers you, and nothing about your experience is ever awkward! My wife also went to Crystal recently and absolutely adores her. If you are looking for someone to do your hair she is your girl! Mine is curly and long and my wife's is extremely thick, she is a pro at both! Crystal also pays attention to the little details, her scalp massages when she washes your hair are amazing, she is honest with how much hair you should or don't need to cut off, and her blow outs are immaculate (if you need a brazilian blow out go see her!). I just got a pretty crappy hair cut here from Nigel. Much shorter than I asked for, choppy and uneven, and I went a few days without realizing that there was a chunk of hair that was a good inch or so longer than the rest. Since I don't own hair scissors I had to go at it with kitchen shears. Not really worth the 45 bucks. Plus, he threw his dog in my lap without asking. I have been to BabaLouise twice now and have seen two different stylists. Both experiences have been great. The first stylist had left the state otherwise I would have booked with her again but I can't complain as I ended up seeing Joei and she was wonderful (thanks Yelpers!). She knows what she is doing and she is a blast to talk with, to boot! Very welcoming place with a funky edge and an easy casual attitude (in the best sense). I was the "last man standing" in my family - Marjory has been taking very good care of my husband's head, my teenager son and my tweener daughter for a number of years - but, you know how hard it is to change stylists, right? It's personal. (Plus, I was a snob, there was no way I was going to go to the largest chain salon to get my locks colored and cut - not going to happen - even if she did a bang-up job on my entire family!) Once she moved over to indy salon BabaLouise, I knew it was time to take the plunge. Now, I am all in. Which is scarier to trust when moving to a new stylist? Color or cut? YES to both. I love Marjory's creativity and personal style, she's a vintage modern lass through-and-through. But behind her expertly applied eye liner and colorfully creative hair that is her personal signature, is a person who is very warm and approachable. She's not going to let you leave unless you look good. I was waiting for my color and highlights to process last Sunday, and she sat with me the entire time and we talked. Of course, if she had other clients she'd bounce between them, and she's skilled at that, too. But I was struck that she didn't just sneak off into the back and hide for a few moments on her own (as an overly scheduled person myself, I certainly understand the temptation!) To me it indicated her personal values towards customer service and client care. And my hair did not smell like hair dye afterwards. She works with you to create your hairstyle goals, and remembers between visits what we are aiming to achieve. I was looking around for a place where i could get my hair reshaped (my cut was totally drab and it needed more life without loosing any length) and I wanted a color change. My friend Marie, who works there part time, suggested that I try them out. I went in at the scheduled time and was promptly offered some refreshments. Marie introduced me to my stylist Lisette who was absolutely wonderful. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do with the color I just knew that mine was too ashy looking. She gave me a book and showed me some colors that would go good with my skin tone and eye color and we both agreed that I should go darker. The ladies who work in this salon are absolutely wonderful. I felt talking to them all were easy and it really makes a difference when everyone is smiling! Lisette then cut my hair after the color was done (which looks absolutely fabulous by the way) and did exactly what I had asked. She didn't take anything off the length just did a nice trim up with the layers and bangs. While I was there I talked to Marie about my upcoming engagement photo session and she suggested that I get their manicure as there will be pictures taken of my hands. She said that the manicure lasts for at least a week without chipping. I had her book me an appointment. I will be returning I had so much fun there and the job they did was fantastic. Wow! Finding a good stylist that reaches all expectations is difficult to do on especially on my busy schedule. I'm so glad I found Diane. She is the best! I love it because I can schedule an appoint that is convenient for me. Diane does awesome color, but better than her colors is her cuts. With my fine, thin hair that is hard to do anything with, but Diane simply commands my hair with comb, shears and blow dryer. I have had better hair results since I started using her. The look and feel of the salon is highly stylish too, but with a nice cozy atmosphere and wi-fi is a plus. All the stylists are fun, but I just love Diane's southern hospitality. I can enter with the weight of the world on my shoulder and come out feeling fantastic. Diane not only makes me look stunning, but she makes me feel better inside and out! FANTASTIC results and WONDERFUL people! I know I'm high maintenance but Dave made me feel like a friend right away. I called last minute on a Sunday for a bleaching (a 3 hour commitment) and he fit me in. I'm directionally challenged but he talked me down the street and waved me into the store. He did a phenomenal job on very little direction (I'm no help when it comes to articulating what I want) and was a delight to talk with. I enjoyed my time talking to him as much as I LOVE how he did my hair. Additionally and equally importantly - he was very honest. A customer came in while he was working on me and he had to tell her the stylist she was looking for had moved. He straight up told her where she went to and it was obvious he was more concerned with helping this client than sales-pitching to try to keep her. I've been meaning to get my eyebrows done by a pro for a while (I spent about two months growing them to default), and when the place I meant to go to was closed, I headed over to Babalouise. They did indeed have drop-ins available, and although the eyebrow person wasn't in yet. I was offered pop and water while waiting, the receptionist was lovely, and the wait wasn't very long. And my eyebrows? Eh, they didn't quite turn out like I wanted them, but I doubt it was the eyebrow lady's (I can't for the life of me remember her name) fault, she's the third eyebrow pro who has failed me, and I am starting to think it's just the way my eyebrows are. She was very nice and courteous, didn't berate me for "overpicking" (I haven't, my brows are naturally sparse) and used wax for the initial cleanup, which hurts less. She also suggested a tint (because I dye my hair), but wasn't at all pushy about it. Overall, a very pleasant experience. read more

I live in the neighborhood and get my hair cut here. To be honest, my haircuts are not very complicated, but I have been to places that charged a few dollars less (and a few that charge more) and ended up with a crappy haircut. This place always does a great job, and I can get in and out really quickly. The space is warm and friendly and the staff is great. Everything is really clean (including the bathrooms), and their website is very well designed regarding finding information and booking appointments. They even email a reminder AND call to confirm a day or two before when you book online, which is a huge help when you get too busy to remember what day of the week it is! My wife gets her hair and eyelashes done here, and has nothing but good things to say about it. Overall, Babalouise is neither a "cheap and cheesy", or "expensive and pretentious" salon, and always has a good vibe going. read more

First, Mireille was fantastic. She did a great job on my eyebrows. I would give her five stars if it wasn't for my bad experience with my hair... I'm pretty Bummed. I went in to get a cut and color before leaving the country. When I called I let the man at the front desk know that I have super thick wavy hair. He made an appointment for me with a stylist who specializes in fine hair (I found this out after the fact). She was a nice girl but apparently blonde highlights on thick hair was a bit outside her skill set. It took her three hours to do my color and cut. I knew it wasn't looking too good when she started to blow me out and I could still see my roots. And then all of a sudden she set down the dryer and said, "there you go!" And I looked at her in amazement... my hair was still wet! I asked her if she had a straightening iron and she said, "I do, but I have to go." And she hustled me out the door and charged me full price! I still couldn't really see it because it wasn't dry or styled but I was really bummed. Don't we go to the salon specifically so we can walk out feeling like a million bucks? I went back to a friends house and used her dryer and straightening iron to style my hair and I was even more bummed. The cut was uneven and carelessly done. The color was uneven and my roots were still showing. I don't know what the deal was, maybe I caught her on an off day... but it was the worst cut and color I have had in my life. I am not usually one to complain about these things, but my friend actually urged me to say something because I was really pretty sad about the whole thing. I personally think that if a stylist isn't capable of doing what the client asks they should be upfront about it from the get go... *sigh* read more

Not a big fan. In a pinch, I went to Babalouise for a cut and color (which normally takes about 2 hours). After five and a half hours getting this service done, I was unhappy with the result. I made an appointment for the following day with the same stylist for a 'fix.' The following day, I was there for 2 hours. I told my stylist that it still really wasn't what I had in mind. She INSISTED THAT I GO HOME WITH FOILS IN MY HAIR TO CHECK THEM MYSELF. I told her I was uncomfortable with that, but she still wanted me to go home with the foils to check them. What was I looking for? Blisters? Burns? Sorry people, that's what I paid you for. The receptionist agreed to check the foils for me. When she did, my hair still looked orange. The receptionist asked the stylist if she would like to make a third appointment for another 'fix.' She said no - that she wanted me to live with it for a while. So, it's not even the hair - which is more damaged than it has ever been and I walked out of there looking like a candy corn after seven and a half hours. That was pretty terrible service. read more

I once did a review on Gene Juarez salon. In that review, I said "you get what you pay for". I realize now I was in error and a bit general. Not that G.J. doesn't have good stylists; they just lost their haircut value around -$20 ago. I keep my hair (what I have left of it) short and to spend $55 (includes $5 tip) on a 15 minute trim is well, I'd rather rip both my arms out of their sockets than spend that much on a 15 minute trim while listening to them talk instead of paying attention to my haircut. Now, I won't go to SuperCuts because I'm not that frugal and at 47, I'm not quite old enough to be scratching my knees yet. Thankfully, I ran ass over teakettle (I like that old expression) into the best of both worlds with Babalouise. They have nine skilled stylists (I had Eunice), intelligent stylists that will do the voodoo that you want them to do with your do. Plus, they are reasonably priced. Short haircuts like mine, $23. My wife and I both tried Babalouise and loved the results so I went back to them yesterday and got the same excellent results. If you go there and really like them, please, only tell the people you know and like about them. I want to be able to always get an appointment there. Thanks. read more

Sorry I went here based on the rave reviews on Yelp and was disappointed. I took a photo and was pretty surprised the stylist couldn't do a simple "beckham" bob. She didn't get the nape right after 3 attempts, I gave up and figured I'll have to let it grow out a little and find someone to fix it. The color was decent and she was a pleasant stylist but didn't understand when she told me not to cut a higher nape because it will look too "young" for me. Ironically I came in here to get a fresh new cut that didn't make me feel like a "mom" and she made that comment to me despite being adamant about NOT wanting a plain old "office" bob. She did the best I think SHE was capable of doing but don't think she has the chops to do edgier styles. read more

After having to say goodbye to my dearest aesthetician at VAIN Downtown, because of ridiculous Salon policies, I was on the lookout for an affordable, hip salon to fix the complete devastation that was my hair due to the aftermath of VAIN, and a much needed eyebrow wax. I booked a color with Heather and a wax with Allison. I couldn't be happier. Being a solid 10 minutes late because of the Ballard bridge, I was greeted by a happy Heather and an empty salon. I was happy to be given the option of the music that we would listen to, but was even happier that I was being listened to. What another consultation resulted in a $400 repair, Heather confidently put my hair back to normal without even batting an eye. What was so hard about THAT, VAIN? Trying to grow my hair out, I was hesitant to book a cut when I booked my other services, but I was so happy with Heathers likable personality, her superb work and her confidence in her work that I promptly booked a cut for tomorrow! The best part? The color, was only $65! (and you get an extra 5% off if you pay cash) Which allowed me to be able to tip her what she deserved while staying in my budget. Allison did a great job waxing, and when it is in the budget, I am going to book a facial with her! Overall, all of the charm, style and atmosphere of the most upscale salons, but none of the snobbery! I Will DEFINITELY return!!! read more

Two words: Asian hair. It's not easy to find a stylist that my hair agrees with. But then I found Babalouise. I am a regular to this place now and I only see one gal: Nikki. She has gotten my cranky and stubborn hair in tip top shape and knows how to work it. She is easy going, relaxed and knows what I want. And after each cut she gives me a fabulous blow out. I trusted Yelp reviews and went in wanting an affordable partial highlights treatment and was scheduled with Nikki. I told Nikki the last time I had my hair colored the stylist rinsed my hair and was asking me to leave the chair when I had to remind her that it needed to be washed and conditioned. Then she managed to give me highlights that overall were good except for the very noticeable area right around the frame of my face where there were weird blobby blonde chunky bits that looked awful and very noticeable when I wore my hair back which I often do. Plus she made me more blonde than I asked to be. So back to Nikki at Babalouise - After explaining all of this what did I walk out of the salon with? Absolutely great color and wonderfully applied at that with a fabulous blow out that made me feel like I should be on a hair commercial. I'll be back to see Nikki no doubt. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Donna was very nice and has excellent ratings on here. Her cuts were fine, but the color was really bad. I have prematurely graying hair. After spending 2 hours having my hair colored, I don't want to see ANY gray. I never did with my old colorist, and I don't with my new colorist. At Babalouises, I walked away with visible gray each of the 3 times I went. She also had a hard time knowing how to deal with the grow out. At first, she colored my grow out my regular brown, but that left me with a line between my brown roots and my blond highlighted hair. She ended up having to put a lot more highlights in to solve that problem, which made me way too blond. On the next visit, the only way she could think of to avoid the original problem was to cover my expensive highlights altogether. The final straw was on the last of my 3 visits when she pre-mixed my color -- just the wrong color. I'd said all I cared about was not having my brown hair tinted red and yes, on the last time, my hair had a reddish tint. Bottom line: Avoid if you have graying hair! read more
