We recently visited Monterey and had a small and quick dinner before we took off. We saw the restaurant was on the way and had a good review on Yelp so we decided to give it a try. The food was fine and the service was normal as a simple family restaurant. However, not until I check my credit card statement two weeks after, I realized that the restaurant was dishonest and put $6 tip to the bill, which was not what agreed to pay. This is unacceptable. I was looking for a local Thai spot to rival my favorite up in the bay and this just missed the mark. The Tom Kha was crazy sweet??? And so tomatoey??? I eat here frequently and have seldom had a disappointing meal. I have lived in Thailand years ago and find this to be true Thai Food. The properitors are very diligent in their effort to bring the freshest ingredients to the plate. I laugh when people ask for it "real hot", many people say they like hot food but when the chips are down they really haven't got a clue as to what hot really is. Heat is not the only thing and sometimes one can overspice their plates which results in not being able to taste and savor the dish. I like their stir frys, from the chili basil to the mixed vegetable, the garlic vege, the soups when it is cold and drizzeling out are not to be missed. The salad rolls are real good too. The curries are a real highlight, red, green yellow & Panang. In the evening they offer dinner specials, not regularly on printed the menu. I hope everyone gives this a try. I am confused by some of the comments with less than glowing reports. read more

Hidden behind the popular Papa Chevos, the only negative thing about Baan Thai is that it took me 3 years of living in Monterrey to notice it. First went in with my girlfriend who shares my passion for Thai food, I ordered hot sake for my girlfriend and a Thai tea to wash it down(Both were great). Our server had a smile and a note pad, did everything we asked and talked to us a little before we left. Our spicy yellow curry and penang curry came out quickly, they had sticky rice which several locations in Monterrey do not. I don't know how to say the food was great besides that I came back 4 times that week with various friends, I even tried to drag the owner of a smoke shop I buy hookah products from because I enjoyed the food so much. I can't imagine them not winning best Thai food of 2011 as well, it is such good food. Monterrey is blessed with Baan Thai and Noodle Bar, both of which offer a diverse menu, great food, and cheap prices. read more

Although in a strange location the food here is fantastic! The panang curry is so yummy, and sticky rice with mango to finish -great! The house wine is affordable and decent. For the location it is a bit pricey in comparison to the other local Thai restaurants. But for sure worth a try- the food was good enough for a return visit! read more

You have to keep in mind, this is Monterey. Having a Thai restuarant is already a great privliege. I didn't want to eat any Thai food on my trip to Monterey but my buddy was in the mood for some Thai food. We ordered some fried tofu and they fried the crap out of it. MSG alert! I asked the server if there is MSG in the curry, and she said yes. I really appreciated her honesty. She told me there was no MSG in the Tom Kah Kai soup, but I have a terribly migraine this next morning. So if you're sensitive, beware! The food is incredible, especially the red curry, but that's because they use MSG to make it taste so good. The Pad Thai is not great, but all their curries and brown rice are tasty. The food was absolutely delicious, but the environment was CRAP! I went probably about 3 or 4 months ago, but I felt like they turned the place into a set for every horror movie filmed ever by night. The walls were blank and sedated, the lighting was terrible, there wasn't any music (actually, there wasn't any sound at all) and there was a dead bug on my boyfriend's plate. After that fiasco, the food was served and we were quite pleased, but really you pay for the atmosphere and I don't feel like I got my money's worth. If Seaside is going to make the cut culinarily, businesses need to step it up a notch. The menu and food is spot on, the interiors... not so much. read more

Horrible portions & just okay food taste wise... Not to mention extremely over priced!

Best Thai food in town. I highly recommend! My favorite is the garlic pepper chicken with a Thai iced coffee to go with it. I think it's family owned. They are always friendly! My fiance left his bracelet there by accident and when we came back 2 months later one of the servers immediately brought it to our table and returned it. She had it neatly wrapped up and everything. I couldn't believe she remembered. We forgot it was even missing! read more

Dined 10/23/2012. I love coming to places like this. Locals know, and luckily, I had a native to show me this place. It's in a nondescript shopping center you'd likely miss if you didn't know it was there. The server/greeter was super friendly and patient, helped me get to the spice level I wanted and assuring me I could "kick it up" at the table with their relish tray of super spicy condiments. I had Pad Thai that was excellent, better than I make at home. Prices are very reasonable. If I ever get back to Monterey/Salinis, I'll try to get back here. read more

pretty good. I don't think we have anything to complain about except they couldn't 'find' a scarf that was left on the chair right after we left.... but nothing fancy, plain restaurant w/ no frills but the food is good. I thought I was interesting that there were carrots and baby corn in our panang curry but it was tasty. tom yum was good but it was missing onions that I'm used to having. I guess a few things are different from what I'm used to but it was still good. Party of 6 felt that it was a mixed 3 & 4 stars. oh and it's loud... you know how we Asian roll, there was a group behind us that thought they were in their house I think! LOL read more

This place is a unique find in the beautiful Monterey Bay area. I used to go to this place when I lived there and was never disappointed. The owners are friendly and will make your food to your taste...typical to close to authentic. This is one of the best Thai restaurants that I've been to. No soup noodle dishes, but the entrees are solid. Order the Fried Oyster omelet. Excellent. Don't go here looking for fantastic views of Monterey...it's in Seaside (next door to Monterey), go for the food. Enjoy !!! read more

I had tom kha kai soup, pad Thai, and veggie pumpkin curry all at 4/5 spice level. This place surpassed my expectations by far. There wasn't much galangal root in the soup, but it was still very tasty. I would recommend this establishment. Hope you enjoy as much as I did. read more

Used to live in Monterey, and this is still the best Thai place I've ever been to. Also known as Barn Thai, due to a typo in the original sign, Bahn Thai has a new sign but still serves up some of the freshest, best-tasting Thai food in the Monterey Bay. Heaping helpings and always-delicious flavors are accented by Bahn Thais fiery homegrown chiles. Thie Mussaman curry is the ultimate and I haven't found a place in SF that comes close. WARNING!!! This is some pretty yummy thai food. The prices are very good and so is the food. It reminds me of the thai place in mountain view that I go to sometimes, which is a good thing. Our waitress was very nice and kept refilling my delicious lemonade. I had some pad se eww which always makes me smile. They have glass noodles! The thai joints I frequent in SF never have glass noodles on the menu, so that was an immediate plus for me. Tucked away in the corner of strip mall, the culinary stylings of Baan Thai still managed to pull in a crowd on a rainy Saturday evening. Service is friendly and prompt, and the yellow curry is oh-so-filling. I'd say this place is more of a 3.5. They'd earn 4 stars if their portions were more consistent -- pad thai dish was HUGE, yet glass noodles were skimpy. read more

However, there are those times that decent thai can be made better because of the environment and the service. This was one of those times. If it wasn't for yelp I may never have discovered this place! It's tucked away in a shopping center and is very casual and small inside. Don't let any of that fool you because this place is amazing. Coming from Bay Area, and originally from Indonesia, this restaurant just doesn't do it for me. My daughter, born and raised in Bay Area, said that nothing special about this place at all. She had green curry and I had spicy flat noodles (which was not spicy at all - my Asian standard, of course). I had to put more soy sauce and chilly spice that was given after I asked for them,... you know, little porcelain container that usually on the table, which was not on the table when the waitress seated us. We came on lunch time. The tea is extra (which usually free flow in many Bay Area restaurants). The waitress brought the soup, (which my daughter made face for it) and salad, which she just touch them with the tip of her tongue. She loves Asian food, I was surprise to see her reaction. We were hungry too then. The waitress acted as if she was so busy, I am not sure whether she was or there are just not enough server. We arrived just before the dinner rush, ordered thai rice and ask for it to be spicy and it was! Also ordered a thai tea and pad see ew. We were very pleased with service and food came right away. Decor is not awesome but the food makes up for it! I will be back to try other dishes. read more

Came here this evening and found the food to be delicious. We ordered chicken pad thai, chicken panang curry, and assorted vegetables with beef. The food was great and the portions were just right. Rice is not included in the order so you would have to remember to order it with your meal. Thai ice tea is a great deal at $2 versus when you order one of these in the bay area. However, the restaurant charges $2.50 if you want less ice in your drink. The fried banana dessert looks really good as well but we had to pass on it because we were to full to continue eating. I highly recommend coming here for Thai food. read more

I am a pho fanatic. I have ate pho up and down Ca. So I found it disappointing when I received my beef noodle soup. It was already seasoned brown, salty, and the noodle was soggy. My biggest disappointment: they should let customers season their pho not have it brought out salty seasoned. We also had the panang cod. It was delicious. No complaints here. However, for the price I expected larger portions. I've had better Thai food although the service was nice. This is my first and last time. read more
