Ba-Le is a fun spot to grab food with great vibes and friendly staff. Love that they serve Happy Dads - perfect place to chill with friends!

Super nice staff and great place to eat for students. They also take meal swipes which is great! I always get the meatball banh mi or the beef pho :)

Just before Thanksgiving weekend I came here on a whim as I was working on the U.H. Manoa Campus............got a little hungry, so I decided to stop by this place called - Ba-Le Sandwich & Bakery. If you folks dig Vietnamese food like I do, Ba-Le is basically a fast food Vietnamese joint. Where is the Ba-Le Sandwich & Bakery located? It's located on the University of Hawaii (Manoa Campus), just inside of the Manoa Gardens Bar area. This particular Ba-Le is a cafeteria style eatery. You basically walk up to the counter to order your food, then upon paying for your food at the cashiers line, you then look for an open table at the Manoa Gardens bar area to sit & eat. The day I came here, I ended up ordering a Vietnamese style turkey banh mi sandwich. What's a "Banh Mi?" Basically, banh mi in Vietnamese means "bread", or more specifically the French baguette. My Vietnamese style turkey sandwich was topped with pickled daikon & carrots, cucumber, and cilantro. There was suppose to be mayonnaise in my sandwich, but I told the lady to nix the mayo, because you know me and my mayonnaise! Lol! For dessert, I got a giant chocolate chip cookie to go with my sandwich. All of this set me back just $7.00 bucks, which was a pretty good deal considering when I go to other sandwich shops like Subway, or Jersey Mike's Subs, I pay waaaaaaaaaaay more. What can I say about the grub? My turkey banh mi was just okay, nothing outstanding about it............... The sandwich had a fair amount of turkey & vegetables, and the baguette bread had a hard & chew texture to it. If you're not into this type of sandwich, Ba-Le did offer other types of sandwiches on other types of bread like - croissant, honey wheat, or ciabatta bread. Ba-Le also offered panini sandwiches, pho, and pre-made sandwiches (like the type I would find in the vending machines). If you don't like the food at the Campus Center, at least there's another option by going to Ba-Le Sandwich & Bakery.

I think this has to be the best value for money on campus, even though it is a further walk. You can get full for $6 off a banh mi sandwich! A meal around $5 is rare nowadays. Ba-Le also has some specialty items and the one that caught my eyes were the hainan chicken rice. I eat this regularly at home since my mom makes it and damn! This place gives me a great fix for it if my mom hasn't made it in a while. It takes quite a bit of work to make and for $10, it is a pretty good price. Usually hainan chicken rice is about $15 if you go else where. This also comes with a salad. It is very filling! I also got their banh mi and it is your usual Ba-Le banh mi! Cheap and very good :) You can ask the ladies for extra veggies or sauce and they are happy to service! I heard a few student in line making customization and the ladies were very nice. I like the standard lemon grass chicken sandwich and turkey sandwich. I'm excited to try more, such as their spring rolls, pho and curries :) You can also order online so you don't need to wait from Tapingo!

Maybe I'm spoiled by the Pig and the Lady, but the banh mis here are horrible - tasteless and uninspiring. The paninis are much more palatable, but a few bucks more ($7+ ala carte). The ambiance is outdated - I don't think it has undergone any changes since my college days, which were 20 years ago. Come on UH - let's give our students, faculty and staff better dining options on this side of campus.

So this is my fourth year in college and ba le is one of my lunch options on campus. I've never really had a problem with this place until today (maybe because it's just Friday the 13th). There I was, in line to order my usual: ham on french bread with everything else and extra cilantro, toasted. Before they even grabbed cilantro I looked at it and they were ridiculously old and had BROWN SPOTS. I'm specifically picky about my cilantro because I ALWAYS get extra. They had a container full of bad cilantro and I couldn't believe that they were serving that to customers. There was a little bit of good ones and she was grabbing those for me but she still got some bad ones. I thought I'd be fine if I ate some of it but....... a few hours later it came out of me and it wasn't pretty. Thanks a lot Ba Le. HOWEVER, their curry chicken is good but sometimes they put more potatoes than actual chicken. The employees also rush people all the time. ALSO, this is like the only bar on campus so that's a pro.

Easy on campus option! Prices are reasonable for students. It's great for large orders, group meetings and on campus conferences.

I could've sworn I reviewed Pho Que Huong before, but guess not. This is my favorite pho shop…read moreon-island thus far. This place is constantly busy, and for good reason. The food is unbelievable! Sometimes there's a line out the door, but the team is efficient--so always wait! This location is in Chinatown on Maunakea. If you're lucky, you can snag a metered parking spot nearby. Pho Que Huong is super clean, and I love how they decorate for holidays. Family-owned, this local business is very welcoming. Plenty of tables. Clean restrooms for paying customers. The food and drink are made with utmost care. The produce is always fresh and clean. The pho broth is unmatched. Not too sweet, lovely and aromatic. Portions are generous for the price point. Vietnamese coffee is a must! Strong and sweet--yum! The spring rolls even taste "healthy" here in that they're not too oily, and made with fresh ingredients. The customer service is always on-point, whether eating in or taking out. Note: They do not offer XL size for takeout. I think it's sweet they don't advertise otherwise, since they don't have the proper containers for that amount of food. Be sure to check out this authentic Vietnamese spot!

I have been living in Hawaii for five years and have eaten at this restaurant countless times. But…read moreafter today, I am utterly disgusted and will never step foot in this place again. Your service is absolute garbage. This morning, I called to place an order. I initially tried using Vietnamese to order two PDBs, but the woman who answered couldn't understand me. I switched to English and asked for two "Pho Combinations." She understood that, took the order, and told me it would be ready in 10 minutes. I also wanted to order Quẩy, so I asked, "Can I get one Quẩy?" Again, she didn't understand. So I clarified in English: "Add one Chinese doughnut." Guess what her response was? She condescendingly told me, "This is a Vietnamese restaurant, not a Chinese restaurant." What the hell is your problem? On your very own menu, that item is literally listed as a "Chinese doughnut." As a server, you don't even know your own restaurant's menu, yet you have the audacity to respond to a customer with such an arrogant, rude, and racially discriminatory attitude. It's disgusting. Everyone knows you are a Vietnamese restaurant. But Quẩy is widely known as a Chinese doughnut, and that is exactly how it is written on your menu. Learn your own menu. To make matters worse, when I arrived 20 minutes later, the front desk told me my phone order hadn't even been made yet and that I had to wait. What on earth was the point of me calling ahead? It's a complete joke. If you are going to be this arrogant and rude, and if you hate Chinese culture so much, why is your restaurant located in Chinatown? Why don't you move to a Vietnamese neighborhood? This is Chinatown. This restaurant has incredibly low-quality staff and a glaring issue with discrimination. It is absurd that an employee can work here without even knowing the menu. To openly disrespect and discriminate against Chinese customers--when you are located in Chinatown and 80% of your repeat customers are Chinese--is pathetic. Take your business elsewhere.

I heard they will keep this space for special events. The restaurant is quite busy and I'm glad we had reservations. Good thing I was there prior to lunch hour opening, otherwise we may lose our reservations since the person who made reservations tends to be habitual in arriving late. We dined in May, but it's been awhile since I first dined here. I preferred dining in Chinatown during lunch time than at dinner. Our waiter was really nice and helpful. I forgot his name, but I remembered that his eyeglasses that he wore was cool/funny, since the frames for each eye didn't match the other eye! lol. Funny it wasn't me who first noticed it. One was square frame and the other was a round frame! The restaurant doesn't do anything special for birthdays except may write Happy Birthday in chocolate on the dessert plate that you purchase for the birthday person. Their desserts are unique and refreshing. I think there are some rotating desserts /flavors like their seasonal menu for their main menu. I guess you can always keep coming back without being bored of the menu! I was bummed to see a previous dish posted of a pasta that I wanted to try that wasn't on the current spring seasonal menu! When we dined for brunch over the weekend, I was able to get the Hainan chicken with the crispy roast pork combo. It was very filling , tasty and satisfying. I do love ginger sauce on the cold ginger chicken but sometimes the chicken is just okay. This Hainan chicken was really good and the chicken was really moist! I thought it was the best I've tried! It was good that I wanted to takeout one last time in August before they moved! No more the 50/50 combo with the crispy roast pork on the lunch menu during the weekday. It was on the spring menu. Of course it's best to eat it in the restaurant than for take out. Bathroom is a must for me when dining out and they had only one shared bathroom for everyone! There was a guy who tried to make several attempts but wasn't successful, since there was always someone in the restroom. I'm glad the waiter told me there was a bigger separate bathroom with several stalls for men and ladies upstairs. You go straight through the kitchen to catch the elevator and to another kitchen /storage area! Thank Goodness! Best wishes at your new location. You offer yummy and tasty food!

When we arrived, we were the first guests so got to pick our table. When we sat down at the pretty wooden booth, there was a happy hour menu on the table. What?!? And YAY!! There was a 2-for special on the cocktails and you could select from the full menu which featured an extravagant and eclectic selection. There were wine and beer specials too but we were here for the cocktails. From the happy hour menu, we ordered the vegan spring rolls, chicken wings, and the Bo Ne Steak--a Vietnamese breakfast with bone marrow, cubed steak, sunny side eggs and a baguette. I can vouch for the spring rolls, light and crunchy without being oily. I don't eat land animals but my friend said the wings were divine. And they give you gloves to eat them. So civilized (ha) and a nice touch! She loved the bone marrow and steak. There was so much food she didn't finish it so I took it home to the hubby who devoured it. No complaints and only smiles from him! I wanted to try a couple pescatarian dishes from the regular menu so ordered the lemongrass clams which was AH-mazing! Could have been my favorite dish of the night because the flavors were unexpected but undeniably good. And, the garlic salmon bun (vermicelli noodles) was fantastic. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was savory yet light. I've never seen this option at any other Vietnamese restaurant and it certainly elevates the traditional dish which usually comes with meat, tofu, or spring rolls. (You can still order the bun with these options and they let you choose your protein combos.) Finally, (I told you there was a lot of food) we ordered the banana blossom salad. I rarely see this offering at other Vietnamese restaurants. It's hard to describe but I refer to this dish as the red-carpet version of the green papaya salad. It's more dressed up and sophisticated. A real treat and a must-have if you're dining at An Di Dzo. Parking was easy since it's at Ward (by the theaters or you can park anywhere in the village). The restaurant is clean and modern.
