This is a traditional Viet deli, and you don't really come for the restaurant part of it. We did anyway, and wasn't disappointed by the fresh bread. I was tentative in going there, since it's in an older part of Arlington, but it's a place you really have to know about in order to appreciate what it has inside, and that's really good food. My cousin and I both ordered two banh mi: they were soft and delicate, and great to eat! They were: banh mi xiu mai (pork meatballs), banh mi xa xiu (bbq pork), and banh mi dac biet (combination). He ordered a soy milk and got it from a can, while I ordered viet iced coffee. Boy was it super-strong. The wait staff rushes you on ordering, and continues to pester you every minute, and then leaves you pretty high-and-dry after you start eating. This is a culture shock to most Westerners, but this is pretty normal in a traditional Viet place. We were a bit annoyed at the fact that there were lots of pho bowls on the empty tables left not wiped and cleaned due to regulars probably having a hangover and needed a quick hangover cure. Still looked unprofessional and dirty leaving them on the tables, though! You go there for the food, and not the supposedly bad customer service... It's just "old-school Viet" culture, and if you go there looking to be treated like a regular American restaurant, you will be very disappointed. I come here about 3-5 times a week! Only because I'm far away from my mom for college and I miss her cooking so this is as close as it can get to my mom's cooking. I always get their sugar cane drink. Service is well, typical vietnamese restaurant. Some of them does speaks english but the rest not so much. There's a sorta older lady at the counter doing cashier work and she's the slowest out of all of them. She always forget half of my order and I always order the same thing. This is my favorite Banh Mi place in the Arlington area. The service can be slow from time to time, depending on who you get, but the fresh daily baked French bread makes up for it all. My personal favorite sandwich is their beef with jalapeños. I also recommend the Banh Xeo. It basically reminds me of an egg crepe/omelet stuffed with bean sprouts, diced green onions and small shrimps. read more

Pho Empire (Irving, Tx) has been my place for pho for years, and it's nearby. Today, I decided to venture out and go south Arlington for some serioius pho/bahn mi since there are more Vietnamese restaurants to choose. Saw good reviews here, so I gave it a try. I had to get both pho and bahn mi since I love them both, and was hungry. For pho, I couldn't decide, so I just had a small combination (you had to ask for it as the combinination was not on menu). And for bahn mi, I had a combination as well. Price was reasonable overall. Place was decent, typical older hole in the wall decor. When we got there, there was a line of about 5 people ordering to go at the counter, but the restaurant itself was only about 1/3 full....this was about 1pm. As such, I expected faster service, but we had to waive down the waitress before she took our order. Once again, no real expectation on service for this type of restaurant. One of my colleague wanted chicken, and I was certain they would have pho ga for her, but per waitress, that is not an option. OK, on to the taste of food. It came about 5min later, which was good. They brought the bahn mi to me first. From the size of it, it's the expected size, but for whatever reason, the content seemed skimpy as they could have put more meat and vege perhaps. As for taste, it was good and fresh, but it wasn't unique enough or strong enough of a taste to say it was awesome. It's just good. As for pho, once again, can't say it's bad, but it's also nothing exciting to say I can't wait to come back soon. It had a unique smell to it...like grass or something. Really can't pinpoint it as it was sort of weird for pho. Probably would have given a 4 stars, but decided on 3 as they didn't have pho ga for my friend, which I was suprrise, and the lack of service. And the fact the food was just OK. Again, it's not to say it's bad, but it's just not worth the 25min drive each way that I could have gone to Pho Empire for. Since there are many other Vietnamese restaurants, I will try some other place next time. They make the best banh mi in the metroplex. I love ordering the plain ones to bring home and dip it in my pho or Bo kho. Their actual sandwiches are decent and should fulfill you. The prices are a little more expensive than other banh mi elsewhere but the bread quality is much better. You can freeze the bread and toast it later on which tastes good as new (I've tried that with other breads; it did not work as well). If you are feeling thirsty, order a nuoc mia. This drink is super sweet from the natural cane sugar so I would wait until my ice melts before I start drinking. The people are rude so don't expect any good service. I'm used to vietnamese service so it doesn't bother me. However, if you go there enough, they will act kind toward you. I got a free bread once because the lady said I need to eat more and grow. Fresh baked in store french baguette, filled with your choice of meats ~ I prefer the grilled pork, they come with pickled daikon & carrots, chopped jalapeno and a touch of cilantro. Now since I love it spicy, I ask for extra jalapeno's and I remove the cilantro. (IMO This sandwich is flavor bomb just waiting to explode in your mouth) They have a full menu of Vietnamese items and also a take out section where you can point out different items to try. This is the best place in the area for Ban Mi. The french rolls are crispy on the outside and are tenderly soft on the inside. The picked veg has the perfect amount of crunch and acidity. The proteins leave a bit to be desired, but they are enough to hold you over. The french roll is the real star of the tasty sandwich. Whenever I'm in the area, I make a point to visit Ba Le for the Ban Mi. The avocado shake is good too. Some say the texture is strange, but I like strange texture. The richness of the delicious fruit with the mix of cane sugar are a great combination. The smooth, chilled beverage is soothing on a hot day. I don't give out 5 star reviews. 4 is the highest I'll ever give. 5 is reserved for the experience of my life. read more

Despite its homely exterior this restaurant sells some of the best bahn mi and baguettes in town. A couple of these plain baguettes cut up and dipped into a little sweetened condensed milk will be your new go to guilty pleasure when those midnight cravings kick in. Don't forget about getting a minimum of two bahn mi sandwiches when you stop by though, l promise after eating the first one you'll be happy for a backup. I'd recommend to switch up the types of sandwiches you get to understand the full complexity of these deceivingly simple sandwiches. Service can be a bit dodgy, and what I mean by that is hit or miss. For that reason i deducted what would have been a 4 star review into a 3. The pho is also decent but honestly I've had better, I've also been spoiled with some really amazing pho in my lifetime so I tend to judge pho a little more critically. But this one in Arlington, especially when on the hunt for some good Banh Mi(Vietnamese sandwich on French baguette), Ba Le never fails. I've been coming here for over 13 years and the buttery aroma of freshly baked bread remains the same as it did years ago. They have a buffet of great comfort dishes by the counter as well as a full dine-in menu with plenty of traditional dishes. I'm not going to lie... when I go to Arlington, I crave the pate from Ba Le Restaurant. Their meat, pate, bread crispiness ratio is perfected. 95% of the time I will always order the pate sandwich with the sugar can drink which they squeeze in a touch of orange in the juice. The other 5%, I'd order any of their sandwich and love any of them. This is perfect picnic food in the park, as a snack, or just a nice lunch. If I didn't live in the Frisco area, I would be there ALLLLLLLLLL the time. On the weekdays, they have the cafeteria style of Vietnamese food where you can choose food for to-go. This is one of the few places that offers thit kho with egg. If I'm lazy (which I usually am and that's why I'm on Yelp), I will get a rice dish here too. It's so hard not to crave all the good food. This place is my go-to and hands down the best banh mi I have ever come across! Maybe I'm a little bias because i've grown up with Ba Le, but wtheck, it's obviously good if you keep coming back, right? Ba Le has various desserts, homestyle Vietnamese meals, which of course, includes banh mi! I always get the combination one, but whenever my boyfriend asks me to pick up some on the way home, I usually grab him his favorite, shredded chicken with an egg on top. Although it never seemed appealing to me because... Well... for starters, it's not on the menu, and chicken + picked veggies + a fried over medium egg + light mayo... I was completely wrong! It's one of the best sandwiches I have tried here! The boba drinks are okay. Boba is hard. Skip that and get their sugar cane juice. Mmm, and get the large size for $5! They pack a lot of ice into it so it's very refreshing and you'll be glad you'll have a larger cup. Service is not why you come here, at all! Pho does not taste like pho and eggrolls are always old sometimes double fried and served with no shame to their customers. Their customer service is 0. You can stand there waiting for a table or you can holler into their kitchen to let them know you need service. It is that sad. I advised my whole family never to eat their regular menu items there and to only ONLY get their sandwiches. Plain baguettes are now 2 for $1. After hearing of this place on Yelp, I stopped and tried the Banh mi ga nuong (grilled chicken) sandwich. It was outstanding. The bread just can't be beat. Nor can the price. Don't go for the ambiance. This is not a touristy place, obviously local Vietnamese are the primary diners, but that's even better. The one sandwich filled me up or I would have tried a few more. I'll be back. I have since tried the barbecued pork bahn mi. It was a little tough and not real tasty. However, the beef and lemon grass was outstanding. Still love this place. Went here to eat and I got a Banh Mi Bo Kho, was very disappointed. The Bo Kho didn't even have beef in it..it just had the cow's fat with a few meat stuck to it and carrots that were falling apart to the touch.In addition the broth was very watered down...on the bright side the bread was very buttery and flakey. For a ba le this place is not that big. They sell pretty much banh mi and meals to go. They also provides dine in service which I thought it was weird for a bakery. Someone should try it and let me know how they rate. The banh mi here is decent. The bread itself is amazing I think however the filling could be better. The rice boxes are 7 bucks a pop for a 3 items meal and are pretty good. I would buy more if the meal prices are lower. My suggestion is go here for the banh mi. Is better than most. read more

I've had better. I've been hearing this is the best place for banh mi in town so I finally went and tried it. It's definitely edible, reasonably priced, and filling, but as far as the taste goes I just didnt find anything too impressive. I got grilled pork banh mi The Service, as expected, rude and standoffish. Don't expect the staff to be personable at all. I'm used to it at places like this though, just get my food to go. The bread, as everyone has stated is really fresh and perfect. But everything else about the sandwich was just average to me. The flavor of the pork was missing that slightly sweet taste that I like on my grilled pork. it was just salty to me, the pickled vegetables were not shredded thinly as i'm used to which isn't a big deal but the whole assortment of veggies all tasted like just pickled cabbage to me :-/ it didnt have a fresh taste to me. Best banh mi sandwiches in town? I would say so. The bread is soft and flaky with a nice light buttery spread on the outside of the bun. Inside you find thinly sliced meats with pickled vegetables. I like the fresh jalapeños and liver paste. It's a great combination. And you can't go wrong with the price at $2.75! I don't have to convince anyone to try this place out. Woulda given them 5 stars but I ordered a loaded Banh Mi Dac Biet (combination special) and they forgot my cucumbers. *roar*... but besides that, I loved everything else about my sandwich. The pickled carrots and daikon were sweet and sour, thickly cut so you could actually taste it. The meats and dressing were fresh... and most importantly, the bread was fresh. Some places don't make their own bread so i was so happy to see that Ba Le put in the extra effort to make everything from scratch. It had more crunch than I liked so I still prefer Saigon Cali's bread texture which is a little more chewy and less crunchy. They've got some tough competition across the street as far as sandwiches go. I still think Saigon Cali is the bomb but that's my bias. One thing Ba Le has that Saigon Cali doesn't have is a whole lunch and dinner menu AND you can dine in! From the dessert case I saw Che Sam Bo Luong, Che Tao Son, and they were selling a lot of Nuoc Rau Ma (pressed pennyworth drink). YUM. I've been going to this restaurant since I could walk and two things have never changed: 1. The absolute best banh mi sandwiches EVER. They bake their own special bread now which only makes it better. 2. The service is absolutely horrible. They specialize in banh mi, and the majority of the customers come and and order tons of banh mi to go (probably because the service sucks). Their other food is delicious too. Anything you order is delicious. They have great banh mi, of course, rice dishes, bun or vermicelli dishes, mi or egg noodle soup, and pho. They also have good specialty drinks like sugarcane and avocado shakes. I've always been in love with the food at this place. It's just the service turned me away after I was old enough to understand what bad or rude service was. The same lady has worked there since I was a kid and her routine is the same all the time. She comes and takes your order quickly, but she doesn't say a single word to you when she approaches the table. She just stands there with the notepad in hand with the same disgruntled look on her face like she's gonna shoot herself in the head at any second. And after she brings out your food, you will NEVER see her again. Refills? Fat chance. More napkins? Forget about it. And if there's something wrong with your order, she'll blame it on you. Oh and that's not even all of it. One time, she got the order wrong and brought out the wrong dish. When we told her our order was wrong, she just looked at us and said, "Just eat it anyway. It's good." and we never saw her again. Apparently, the poor service has turned many customers away and business started slumping. So to compensate for their costs, the prices went up. So my suggestion is to go here and buy the sandwiches to go because they're the best you will ever have, they're only $3, and you don't have to stay for the bad service. But if you're feeling adventurous, go ahead and dine in there once. The food is great. But don't be surprised when Grumpy is your server. read more

Every Vietnamese adult knows to get their banh mi from Ba Le. Best banh mi around. I've been coming to this place with my parents since I was a little girl and it's still the same. It gets hella crowded in the mornings because they make all of their sandwiches fresh so everybody rushes up here for grabs and I would recommend you do the same :) Don't worry, the line moves fairly quickly. They're good for a food run before road trips too. Best to get their banh mi before 11AM to eat it at its prime. Banh mi dac biet (special combo sandwich) is my go-to! They make it with various meats, paté, mayonnaise, and you can have them place the veggies, jalapeño, and pickled carrots + daikon in the sandwich or leave them out separately which is what I always do so that I can add in the right amount that I enjoy. They used to have a buy 5 get 1 free deal, but if I'm not mistaken, they did away with that. Shame. You can also buy just the bread 5 for $1! A total steal. And it's so fresh and warm and crispy and fluffy and... You can eat it on its own, or use it for homecooking paired with whatever else you make. For example, curry or dunk it in some freshly brewed coffee. Delish. The stuff in their display case is pretty good. They have white Vietnamese yogurt. I never liked it, but it started growing on me the more I eat it so I like it now. That's how I got used to sushi lol. And they have chè, which is traditional Viet beverage/pudding/dessert type of thing. I like how those are already in to-go containers. Not sure about the food in the attached restaurant. It's usually just a pick up place for everyone so I think I'll leave it at that. read more
