We're avid pho eaters! We've traveled through so many states and we love to try pho everywhere we go! I ordered the filet mignon, brisket, and tripe/tendon pho! The banh pho was prepped perfectly with the fresh slices of filet mignon on the platter! The pho broth arrived in a stone pot, and to those who don't know, the stone pot makes a HUGE difference in the pho! It holds the heat's temperature! For those who are particular about your pho broth, you won't be disappointed! Yes, the broth is dark, but that's a good thing! That tells me that they slow cooked the bones to make the pho's broth! Upon checking out, the ladies realized they were charged $18 for a lunch potion of veggie fried rice. I told them no big deal but I'd never order here again. One of the ladies who's a regular called back to see if they made a mistake- they said nope fried rice is the same regardless if it has a protein or not and there's not way for them to change the price. Welp, they can count me out from every dining here. The food was ok but not worth the price. And who charges $18 for fried rice in a styrofoam container. Always a good experience when we stop in! There is a great selection of vietnamese food that are special in their own way. The pho comes out deconstructed but boiling hot so you get to know exactly whats in it. There is a sizzling plate (Banh Mi Bo Bit Tet) that comes out with steak and eggs along with French bread, pate, and mayo are just so perfect together. There's the mon viet rice plate (Com Ga Mon Viet) that has a halved Cornish hen that's fried and served with fried rice. Honestly the sauce brings it all together. The place has a great ambiance when inside and it's a great place for a family dinner. The waitstaff can be a little slow. I wanted to try the spare pork ribs in hot pot for some time now. When I entered I was seated promptly and served drinks quickly. My waiter came to take my order but was a bit unfamiliar with the entree I wanted and was attempting to explain to him. Someone else came to take my order and it was soon sent to the kitchen for my meal to be fixed. The entree came with a serving of white rice which was a bit too dry and plain of flavor of you ask me. It was leftover rice and was not fresh whatsoever. The vegetables were invitingly tasty looking and were not limp. My egg rolls I ordered came out and smelled delicious and looked so so good. The sauce, I believe was some sort of sweet sauce looked so delicious as well. I bit into the egg roll only to my surprise a warm and soggy sensation. I was horribly dissatisfied with the egg roll. I washed it down with the Dr. Pepper I ordered to cleanse my palette. My pork ribs arrived and smelled delicious but again I was disappointed by the extreme level of saltiness and dryness of the meat. I can tell it was microwaved from a previous batch and tossed in a warmed sauce. In the end I expected a cook to order meal as most would expect but I ended up with microwaved warmed pork and egg rolls with dried up rice and a cold Dr. Pepper. If you go here, you need to get their pho AP cho (fried pho noodles with veggies, meat, seafood), pho filet mignon, banh mi bet tet op la (filet mignon steak, sausage, over easy egg and bread). Their pho AP Chi is always delicious and they have a sauce on it too. The pho filet mignon comes in a boiling black bowl and a plate of thinly sliced meat. You add the meat in as it's boiling, so it's sooo soft and the broth is delicious. The banh mi is definitely a greasy food with the meat cook on top of a sizzling plate. Our group arrived around 11:30 am so it wasn't that busy. We were seated right away. I browsed through the menu and decided to go with Hu Tieu Suon Kho (rice noodles with pork, shrimp, and squid) with the broth on the side. It was decent considering the location. Most delicious Vietnamese food are in Cali. I found that the portions are skimpy as compared to other places. The boys ordered pho which is usually the safe route. They both agreed it's average. I found the broth lackluster. We also ordered the Banh Mì Bí Têť Ôp La (Filet Mignon, Chinese Sausage, and Sunny Side Eggs). This is a traditional Euro-Viet dish that is served with a French baguette along with pâtè and butter. Overall, if I keep an open mind then the food is not bad at all! I can't say it's great though. I came here for lunch with a friend around 11:15 and we were immediately able to be seated! They're doing a good job of socially-distancing the tables. We sat down and I of course immediately knew that I wanted to order their grilled pork vermicelli bowl after stalking the pictures on Yelp. We were able to order really quickly and got our food back within 15 minutes! I loved how fresh the vegetables were and the grilled pork was so yummy and flavorful. I especially enjoyed the diced mint leaves in the dish instead of cilantro and that they made sure not to put peanuts in them after I told them about my allergy! When we finished our menu, we just went up to the cash register and paid. I loved reading the sign to the left of the counter where they discussed how the restaurant came to be. Mon Viet Cafe is like this bright sparkling gift wrapped in a plain brown paper. The exterior of the restaurant in Ben Trahn Plaza was fairly nondescript; but when I stepped inside Mon Viet Cafe, I felt for a moment like I was transported to a Bistro in Vietnam. Airy, well lit and decorated in classic moderne bistro black and white, we were seated in a spacious booth. The chalkboard above the counter was nearly all Vietnamese without translation. If the several big screen TV's hadn't been on; the illusion would have been complete. We ended up having several waitresses. Our first was so sweet and wanted to guide us to the best items on the menu. I had many questions and although I'm familiar with Vietnamese food, I did have trouble grasping some of the menu and some of her English. I might have been too much for her. She never wavered, though!! My husband prefers the rice wrapped rolls and I love a good fried Vietnamese eggroll. The eggroll ($3.50) was crisp and served with a terrific dipping sauce - more peppery than sweet. I prefer a little porkier, fatter eggroll. This one was a little too skinny. The summer roll with plump shrimp and tender steamed pork ($5.25) was wonderful, though. Tightly rolled with a luscious peanutty dipping sauce. Both with pickled daikon and carrots and lettuce and Thai Basil on the side. After appetizers, out next waitress was "Texas Vietnamese," probably sent to wrangle me and we enjoyed each other the rest of the way. My husband and I ordered the Filet Mignon Pho for ($11.99) plus beef meatballs for an additional ($1.99). We loved this pho and the presentation. The pho broth with meatballs arrived in a scalding stone hot pot and we were instructed to add our thinly sliced raw filet mignon. I missed a photo op of the artistry of the winding circular slices of beef on a plate, so perfectly laid. The beef was also garnished and I was merrily tossing in beef slices and finished with that fun before I remembered about a photo. The set up plate had the usual additives plus rau ram which I was delighted to see. A soft blade like leaf, it's also called Vietnamese Coriander and is a cilantro/mint like herb. The noodles arrived on a separate plate in a mound with cilantro and scallion garnish. I've never had the noodles served separately! I love noodles and added them all in; but I found the freedom of choice interesting. I had also ordered an off menu Banh Mi with grilled pork ($4) that turned out to be very good. I was surprised there were no Banh Mi sandwiches on the menu, although there is plenty of the crusty bread served with various dishes on the menu. It had been awhile since I'd had those familiar flavors and my husband and I shared a few bites of the fragrant grilled pork and crunchy veggies. Perfect. Mon Viet Cafe really spoiled us with service; but the table had been heavily used and was out of some items that they assumed we had. No problem, they rustled those up and met our every need. We had a good time. We did not order anything from the amazing drink menu - they must have 20 choices, some with durian! - or have any dessert. We left stuffed, as it was, and it was so good! It's almost jarring to step back out into the smell of an ordinary parking lot; but it was terrific being "travelers" and patrons of Mon Viet Cafe for awhile! read more

Highly disappointed. I used to come here often but I moved away so it's been a while since I've been back. One of my favorite noodle dish was discontinued and the other sizzling meat dish was not the same. They switched out the red sausage for regular American sausage, taking away the authenticity of the dish. Prices were really high! It wouldn't be such a problem if the food was more authentic and super delicious but I was left really unsatisfied. $80 for 2 adults and 1 child is way too expensive for a casual Vietnamese restaurant. My fiancé got the caramelized pork and said it was lackluster. The sauce wasn't really thick to have it called caramelized, and the flavor wasn't really present. We loved the salted fish fried rice. But for $11, you don't really get much. It came with a side of broth, which was honestly, super good lol. I ordered the filet mignon and Chinese sausage banh mi. It came with a side of the pate, French butter, veggies in a light sweet sauce, and the meat came on a sizzling cast iron pan with a sunny side up egg. I personally really liked it. The meat was seasoned perfectly. I would suggest they either slice it up or give us a better knife lol I was on the struggle bus trying to slice my filet mignon with the busted dull knife.
