Azumi's happy hour is definitely worth checking out! The highlight for me was the ambiance along with the crispy rice--perfectly done and easily my favorite bite of the night. The Brussels sprouts had a unique flavor twist that I didn't expect, but I didn't mind it either--it kept things interesting. The chicken gyozas were solid and reliable, the kind of "just right" comfort food you can always count on. Now, the real surprise? The lychee martini. I rarely order one, but decided to give in to the hype, and I finally understood why it's a signature choice. Refreshing, smooth, and absolutely worth the praise. We had an early-ish dinner here on Friday night before going to see movie. Arrived in time for our 6:30 res and were taken directly to our table. The interior dining room is very sleek and high end but it is also LOUD. They had a DJ over in the bar area and while it did create a certain vibe it also made it almost impossible to have a conversation during dinner. Our waiter was wonderful and service was great. The food was good but not stand out and price wise it is one of the more expensive options in town. They completely deseeded the peppers in the yellowtail & Serrano dish making it not spicy in the least which was disappointing and the dumplings were served with only 4 pieces. Arriving in such a busy location I was amazed how many people arrived for the happy hour. With reservations set at 6p my friends and I were determined to scope the packed scenery. We learned upon arrival that the $2 drink deal required you to sit outdoors and although the price is amazing the Houston heat was not. So we opted to sit indoors and enjoy the AC. There were about 15 people in the restaurant. We ordered appetizers,( sushi of course ) chatted for a bit and ordered our mains. The food took almost 30 minutes for a party of 4. This is for full menu service. Service in the bar and patio areas seemed to be serviced faster. My lamb chops were over and undercooked! Came here Thursday for our anniversary. We made reservations and waited 20 minutes after arriving at the restaurant. The food was mediocre at best and my wife compared it as being a step up from Central Market sushi. The manger made the excuse that there were not enough tables then when I said there were plenty of open tables all around us made the excuse of saying they were understaffed at the same time saying "I'm not trying to make excuses here." The cherry on top of the meal was the facilities fee of 3% added. I don't mind paying more for the wait staff, but tell me before hand. Phi, our server, was the only reason I don't give it a one star. He was very nice and helpful. We won't ever come back. P.S. Some highlights: - veggie tempura was my favorite. Large portion, tasty, pretty and filling - truffle avocado was my second favorite. So balanced and flavorful - premium California is highly recommended and a generous portion to share - hearts of palm was very light and kind of like a salad. I enjoyed it but not certain I'd get it again - avocado roll was really good and a nice size for happy hour price - shishito peepers were not for me but I don't like them in general - edamame was great but typically hard to mess up - ice cream and sorbet selections are very unique and super flavorful. My Server was Jess and she nailed it, the customer service, along with the other team members ensuring several things did not happen, even management pitched to keep the standard. Azumi is new to the ROD and although it took them a very long time to open up, I think it was worth the wait. Situated right next to Loch Bar, Azumi brings a unique vibe to ROD, where you have more "upscale" restaurants like Steak 48 or Bari. My friend and I opted to check them out on a Monday afternoon for happy hour. Now, we were a bit confused because the night before, we checked the website and it said happy hour was 3-6pm, then the following day, it said 4-7pm. To be on the safe side, we went at 4:30pm. When we got there, we were greeted by two ladies at the host stand and made our way to the bar. There were two other patrons at the bar and 3 staff members behind the bar. We sat down, looked over the menu and noticed it also slightly differed from what we saw online. We brought it to the attention of the bartender because we just wanted to be clear on what constituted as happy hour. There were plenty of options to choose from at a decent price so we got the spicy edamame, crispy rice truffle avocado, chicken gyoza, sweet corn, avocado roll and Brussel sprouts leaves tempura. The food came quickly but the portions were small (particularly the crispy rice truffle avocado). I really liked the Brussel sprouts leaves and the spicy edamame. The avocado roll was fresh but I've had better. I also got a mocktail lychee martini so although it's not on the menu, they can make you one. Our bill came out to $68 so they definitely have one of the best happy hours in the area. We'll definitely make this our go to for happy hour as it's in the neighborhood and the staff was very friendly. The best part of Azumi is the outdoor patio. My husband and I decided to try this place on Valentine's Day and got lucky to find a seat at the bar. Great vibe. They have a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays and the whole place was pumping. Juliano helped us and was really friendly. Anna, the bar manager was a rockstar. She basically is the glue in this place and was really engaging even while being slammed in the well. We both thought that she really added a fun element to the night. I ordered the Hanayome Cocktail which was light, refreshing and very fruit forward. I would highly recommend it. My husband got the Diatome Chardonnay which he said was fine. They were a bit limited on white wines by the glass without a Pinot Grigio option. I also got the Two Moons cocktail which was solid as well. We went small plates and sashimi. The Yellowtail Serrano dish was great. Had a nice balance of sweet and also a little kick from the Serrano peppers. It was also quite fresh. The Tiger Prawn Tempura was awesome. Great mix of everything without being greasy. Also cooked well. Shrimp is hard sometimes as it get overcooked in a fryer but not here. For sashimi, we ordered Madai, Kinmedai, Bluefin Akami, Shima Aji and Hamachi. All were fresh and cut well. They give solid cuts on their sashimi. At Anna's recommendation, I also got the Sake Toro with rice and I thought it was quite good. We really enjoyed it here and will return. read more

I made a lunch reservation at Azumi almost three weeks in advance for Thursday, October 2nd. A few days before, I received a cancellation notice not by me, but from the restaurant. When I called to ask what happened, the manager told me my reservation had been canceled because they host a "Thursday Happy Hour" starting at 3 p.m., and sometimes people book lunch and stay through the afternoon. That explanation was ridiculous. My reservation was squarely during lunch hours, well before happy hour even begins. I made it clear to her that I wasn't coming for $2 drinks or social media hype I don't care about the restaurant being "trendy." I was coming for lunch, on my own, for my own personal purposes. But instead of listening, she doubled down with an attitude that felt completely dismissive and condescending. She explained that because my reservation was for one person at the bar, they went ahead and canceled it. Excuse me? That's not hospitality -- that's discrimination against solo diners. I dine alone frequently and often sit at the bar with my laptop when I have downtime between meetings or before my social events. Her tone made it clear she assumed my reservation wasn't "worth keeping," and that was honestly the most insulting part. I was told the general manager would reach out the following Monday (October 6th). It never happened. After multiple calls and emails, they reinstated my reservation, but by then, I wanted nothing to do with the place. I ended up canceling it myself -- not because I couldn't go, but because I refused to give my money to a business that treats people like that. What's even more frustrating is that I usually stop next door at Le Colonial to pass time in the area, and this time, I decided to finally try Azumi instead. That decision was a mistake. Between the poor communication, the judgmental attitude, and the dismissive reasoning, I've never dealt with such unprofessionalism from a restaurant that supposedly prides itself on fine dining. The ambience is everything, but so is the food. It's a luxury experience that doesn't sacrifice on quality. Everything was full of flavor. We started with the charred avocado which was out of this world delicious! Then we had the rock shrimp tempura which was very good, but the breading was a bit heavy for tempura, and the yellowtail Serrano which we enjoyed. I then tried an assortment of nigiri, including one the waiter mentioned off the menu. I particularly loved that they put the fat content of the pieces on the menu. As someone who doesn't like fattier pieces I appreciating know what I could order that was lean instead of having to google. lol. Visiting Houston to celebrate my mother in law's birthday and decided to have a beautiful dinner at Azumi. The location is prime, right in the heart of the River Oaks Galleria luxury mall. We had a reservation which made things go smooth for us. We were seated and immediately helped by the staff. All the staff was friendly and communicative . For example, we got some sushi for appetizers and the sushi came before our drinks so our server didn't fail to inform us that the bartender was backed up. Due to the fact that she communicated, we were not even bothered by it. Now let's talk about the drinks in question. We had a couple alcoholic drinks as well as the two non alcoholic drinks on the menu. The cucumber non alcoholic one was fantastic! The other one was missing something as it felt very dry. The alcoholic ones were good, no complaints there. As previously mentioned, we started with sushi as appetizers and we tried 3 of their rolls. We tried the San Roll, Tuna Tataki Roll and Spider Roll. The whole table collectively agreed that the Tuna Tataki Roll was the best. Flavor, consistency and presentation it was just the star roll for the table. I will return just for this roll single-handedly. Now for the mains: 1. My sister in law started with the Wagyu Yakisoba; noodles and meat, nothing to complain about but also nothing special. She wanted something classic and simple and that's exactly what the Yakisoba delivered. 2.My mother in law tried the giant prawn; Beautiful presentation. After the first bite she was hit by a multitude of flavors and aromas that took her by suprise in the best way. She said it tasted divine and the combinations of flavors are well thought and put together. 3. My father in law tried the branzino (no picture attached as that shot didn't come out properly) ; I recommended the branzino as you can never go wrong with it anywhere you go and he was so happy I did. Cooked to perfection with an amalgam of flavours and sauces that just took it to the next level. He was really impressed with the quality of the fish. 4. My partner had the lamb chops; Now most of the plates have a decent amount of food in them while the lamb chops just felt like an appetizer, not a main. For a big man, he basically inhaled the lamb chops before we even dug our forks into the rest. Wish there was at least 3 or 4 on the plate. Taste wise they were divine hence why we are asking for more lol. 5. Now last but not least, my plate was the Surf and Turf Cortado; Beautiful presentation with half a lobster and steak on the bottom. The lobster was just lobster but the steak stole the show for me. I shared a piece with my whole table and everyone agreed it's probably one of the best steak bites they've ever had. It was melting in my mouth and the sauce on the bottom just complemented both the lobster and the steak in a grand way. Collectively we all agreed that the spices and sauces are really what put Azumi on the Top 10 places we've eaten for the whole family. The chefs have found the best way to cook and complement fairly simple ingredients. In the end; my mother in law was also brought a birthday dessert which was so nice! My friend and I decided to stop by for a late night bite since Azumi closes at 12AM. The design of this restaurant is beautiful all around, inside and out. We were greeted by their lovely staff at the host stand. Service was great, managers and staff members constantly checking up on our table. Onto the food, the Shima Aji nigiri and the Flounder Crudo were the only memorable items. For the sushi, you're only allowed to order by nigiris in pairs. Which is odd, since usually the cheaper restaurants do that. I wanted to order the Kamatoro which was $44, however my friend didn't. So customers can't order 1 piece but can order 3? Seems like they just wanted to make a sale off 2 pieces minimum. All of the nigiris were dress very well though.
