Chico...a very strange town to a San Franciscan local, but this cat takes a trip out to this sometimes bizarre but always charming town once a year, and each year I let myself try a new place to eat in hopes that it is everything I desire and more. After a late night hang out with some friends at Bird In Hand, myself and three others hopped in the car and decided to see what new places we could find. Our random searches on yelp led us to Aztlan, and we decided to give it a try. At first we were quite confused on where this place was, as the map led us right into a gas station. It took a bit, but we soon realized that the establishment was in fact on the other side of the pumps and in a small white building. "Uh oh..." we thought, "did we just get tricked into a cheap fast food fakery? We entered and were greeted by a nice woman and a cook. They seemed truly genuine and happy so my hopes that their food was good was extremely high. We took a quick look at their menu and noticed quite a variety of items. I noted some very unique items on their tortas menu and decided to give their "Hawaiiana" Tortas a try. I also noted a drink called "Jamacca" that I had not heard of before, so I ecided to give that a try as well. We sat outside and our food was brought to us. First thing I must say... WOW! The portions here are MASSIVE! And for price? Unbeatable, and unheard of. I looked at the size or the item I had bought and chirped happily despite having to use two paws to hold this monster of a tortas. Of course, we would have to see how it would taste! I took a bite, and was very happy with the flavors I found. Nothing too strong, good balance, not totally drenched in sauces or condiments, perfection. I took a sip of this jamacca drink that I had not heard of. I think I may have a new favorite drink, VERY good! And like nothing I've ever had before. One of my friends ordered a side of chips and salsa, and we were all surprised when the woman brought out more chips and salsa for the rest of us saying that "you guys probably want some too!" So nice! I am so happy that this new business is getting the wonderful reviews they are, because they truly deserve it! I have not had Mexican food this good in a long time, and the people who work here are truly amazing individuals who I feel very good about supporting! If you're in Chico, take a stop by Aztlan! I'll keep this short. This is, by far, my favorite place in Chico. Everything I've gotten from there has been absolutely delicious and the owners are really good people. I've been meaning to review them for a while, but today's visit pushed me over. They've added fish tacos to their menu and all I can say is, "WOW!" Seriously the best fish taco I've ever had. And I've had a lot of fish tacos. The Cubana is also delicious and ginormous. And their tacos are so filling! And the burritos are amazing. And the nachos... Bottom line, go. My husband and I went to Aztlan today for lunch on the Esplanade near the old Tortilla Flats. I had the Chile Relleno Plate and he had the al pastor torta. It was fast and delicious. My only thing I didn't like was the patio (that we tried to sit down on at first) the table was dirty. We went in to sit down inside and again found the table dirty. They definitely was taking in the orders but cleaning tables was not their priority. But we will be back. read more

After reading so many positive reviews, and reading the article in the Chico ER starving student article, I came here expecting to be impressed. However I left after eating here feeling pretty disappointed. I ordered a burrito, vegetarian. The tortilla was dry, not soft. The beans had no flavor, and I wasn't offered an option of black beans, just plain refried. They had no flavor, just bland. The rest of the burrito had no salsa, at least none I could taste. No cilantro, no onions. The rice was beyond bland. Maybe plain and boring goes well with flavorful, marinated meat, but any place should be able to offer a burrito with no meat and still have authentic flavors. This is a place where cheap isnt so good. I'll be going to aca taco, as usual. read more

The chicken burrito was soooo bomb!! The place is neat and clean and they give great service. We almost drove pass it because it's a small building on the lot of gas station. Astlan ranks up there with Gordo's ,for strange locations. Since it's hidden behind the Gas Pumps, off to the side, but worth trying! We loved that it was very clean. They don't offer Soda, but there is a Market across the Parking lot, that does. That Owner wasn't as pleasant! Shame He's reaping the rewards with this Business. Had a burrito and it was very big and delicious. Price was just right. Friends have told me they're happy with other foods that they've ordered. Not a lot of seating outside. There are many excellent Mexican restaurants in Chico and this place isn't bad it's just that they have a lot of competition and it's really not a sit down type of place. read more

I asked the gal working the counter if they had the chili verde as it's one of my favorites, she said they didn't sell enough of it to keep it on the menu. So I order the carnitas burrito and she suggested I add the Verdi salsa to it, she was right on target with that! Best food in Chico. Do NOT listen to the petty yelp reviewers complaining about a couple flies or the fact you have to walk 10 seconds to a gas station with all the drinks you want. Those complaining about the service should go spend 4X the money at a sit down restaurant. The kitchen at Aztlans is probably cleaner than 98% of kitchens in Chico. Watch them make your food if you wish. This place is simple. Order food at register, pay for it, wait shortly and receive exactly what was ordered. I am willing to bet I eat here more than anyone and I have never been given an incorrect order. Negative reviews of this great place forced me to write a review. Try this place for yourself. This great little spot hits the quadfecta: really tasty, good servings, low prices, and quick service. Plus it seems to be owned by a young couple. Only drawbacks are lack of inside sitting space and very limited drinks... but the neighboring gas station has lots. read more

This is authentic Mexican food! You won't see any white people in the kitchen thank goodness lol. Friendly environment. Horchata is bomb too! Very tasty Mexican food. I brought the family and took the food to go. I had a carnitas burrito, my wife had al pastor burrito, kids had tacos & a quesadilla. All were good. The pastor was much more flavorful than the carnitas, but the mild (green) salsa was a bit sour. We will try the spicy salsa next time. The place was small and you could see that the kitchen is very clean. Prices are a bit higher than taco trucks, but the portions are a bit bigger as well. read more

Portions are large! Pastor taco was my favorite but they were all delicious. I shoveled three into my mouth simply because they were so good. We made a stop through here for lunch on a road trip and I'm so glad we did. Nice ladies working the front and super quick service. read more

I've been coming here for a couple months now and I have to say this is my new go-to for Chico Mexican food. I live right around the corner and went to Duke's Liquor for years, but Aztlan has been stealing away my hard earned pesos from Duke's for a while now. The flavor of the meat is great, and they have all of the standard options for meat choices. My personal fave is Al Pastor, but I get that pretty much everywhere I go, so I guess that's nothing new. What I like about the Al Pastor is you can actually taste the sweetness from the pineapple. Good Al Pastor should have a balance of savory/sweet, and this place does. It's cheap and the portions are generous. it's very tasty and the owners are extremely friendly. I always like to make small talk with them whenever I'm in there. I think the owner was struggling a bit for a while, but he says it's getting better now and with all the other positive yelp reviews I can see why. My go to is the burrito, and there's always plenty of meat and not too much of that "other stuff" in there. I've had the tacos and fajitas as well and both have been great. I haven't had their breakfast burritos yet, but I can't imagine how they could go wrong. Go in and try it if you haven't. You won't be disappointed. read more

So here's the deal. I really want to leave a bad review so they don't get super busy, but I just can't. Food is awesome, prices are fair and the owners are great. I found them after the taco trucks in the area turn to crud and got expensive. That was about 3-4 years ago. Now I am there at least once a week. Moved to Paradise so it's a little harder but I still get there every chance I get. Bottom line, The Best! read more

By far my favorite burritos in the area. Carnitas and breakfast burritos are the best and a family favorite. Only complaint is they hit you up for a tip at the register when paying with a card. Kind of intimidating when you wonder what will happen to your food if you don't tip. I only go if l'm paying cash. read more
