I picked the car up on August 15 at 10:30 AM, paid a total of $84 for a 24 hour rental.
After driving the car for a total of 45 miles there was a flat tire on the highway. There was no spare tire in the car. I called Avis roadside assistance and was told that within an hour the tire would be replaced or I would receive a new car if a replacement tire could not be provided.
I went to a local residence (5 miles from scene of flat tire) giving Avis that address and telling them that is where they could deliver the car with the fixed tire or a new car. They said that was not a problem and it would be handled within an hour.
After an hour past with no word I called back and was told that they were not sure of the status of the tow company location, could not get in touch with the tow truck driver, or the tire repairman, and I should receive an update within 30 minutes. 30 minutes passed and I still received no update. Each time I called I was transferred to a different person who told me repeatedly that they could not get in touch with the tow truck driver and could not verify the status of my assistance. Again I was told that I should receive the repaired car or a new car within an hour. A total of six hours later a tow truck came and brought me a new car. The tow truck driver had no information about the car that had a flat and hit obviously not been informed that my original call was placed six hours prior to his arrival.
I returned the new car the following day, August 16 at 10:30.
Upon return from my trip I called customer service to file a complaint that it took six hours to replace my car. I was told that it was my own fault that there was a flat tire and I was responsible for changing it. If I did not want to wait for Avis then I had the option to call my own tow truck and or tire repair company. This information was not given to me at the time of my original call nor was I told that it could take six hours for Avis to handle the problem. Had that been the case I would have proceeded with another option to repair the car.
The customer service representative was extremely rude, told me the best thing that she could do was refund me a total of $14.99 for the six hours that no car was available to me. She also told me that I would be charged for the towing of the damaged car, the delivery of the new car, and the cost of replacing the tire. She insisted that I had requested a brand-new car and that is why all of these financial obligations fell to me. I restated that I in no way requested a new car, that that option was only necessary if Avis roadside assistant deemed that they could not repair the tire on the original car I picked up.
Never was I told that I would be responsible for the towing or for the cost of replacing the tire. I asked repeatedly if there should have been a spare tire in the car when I picked it up and was never given a specific answer. When I questioned how I would have changed the tire myself (as the customer service agent suggested and then rudely question why I had not changed it) without a spare tire in the car I was again not given any specific answer. She told me that a flat tire is ruled customer damage and the customer is responsible.
I was never told what caused the flat, to my knowledge there was no obvious reason, nor could she provide any information on the cost of repairing the tire or the cost of the towing service.
The unprofessional chain of communication set up through Avis's roadside assistance was infuriating on its own. I was continually told no information or incorrect information about the amount of time it would take to replace or repair the car I had rented. I specified to the customer service representative that had I ever been told it could take up to six hours to have this matter settled then I would have taken a different avenue of having the car replaced and/or the tire fixed. Instead I was put on hold and repeatedly said within an hour that it would happen and it did not. Meaning that while I was on a vacation across the country I spent six hours waiting for a usable car. This happened between 6pm and 12 AM. My night of vacation was definitely ruined as it was spent waiting for an update on the car. When I questioned the customer service representative as to how it took six hours (five hours longer than I was originally told) she was able to provide no answer past an insincere apology and shoddy explanation that sometimes communication between roadside assistance, Avis, and the tow company they use can be faulty.
I requested a formal invoice on the cost of the tow truck and the cost of repairing the tire which she was unable or unwilling to provide yet told me that my credit card would be billed for what ever that amount totaled. read more
