the worst experience I have ever had with a rental car company. It's a shame to have had a reservation and the customer number that I called the man was vvery frank when he told me that reservations doesn't matter, it's a first come first serve . Wow, are you serious? Just what if flights were like that, just what if trains were like that..... That how ignorant and stupid that sounds. I said sir, the reason for reservations is "that" you are reserving a car for your time allotted for yourself. For the life of me, he continued to say first come first serve. Thank God a had a family member with and extra car I could borrow while in town formy sick mother who was in the hospital otherwise, I don't know what I would have done. This company clearly is concerned about money and no committment to customers at All, I will NEVER AGAIN. read more

Wait for hours in multiple lines to get a car with a reservation. Very poor service. Even though you pre check and enter everything online, it still took 30 min to checkin then another thirty outside in the cold to have someone bring you a car. I flew into NOLA with an Avis reservation. The Jeep Compass I was issued hadn't been cleaned inside or out. The bigger issue was the inside of the Jeep had a rank body odor smell that wouldn't go away. Rank is the only way to describe it. read more

Terrible experience with Avis! Reservations don't matter. Employees are stressed out. No more using Avis!!!

If i could give them 0 stars i would. 1/3/22: Have been in line for over 30 minutes with 6 people in front of me when i first got here. There is 1 more in front of my now and still not at the counter. HORRIBLE SERVICE! The employees have not said what's going on and the 2 agents have had one customer there since i got here. Will never use this location ever again and this is a car for my job. Will tell them of this as well. Fix this Avis!!!!!!!! read more

Worst experience I've ever had with renting a car or customer service. Please use national to rent a car and be sure to book in advance or they will not attend to you. This place is the worst! Two customer reps for about 30 people in line. Waited about 2 hours, with a reservation, only to be told that they don't have any cars. I'm a really patient man but this place really tested my limits. Will be avoiding this place from now on. read more

My Company has a long standing National Contract with Avis, but its been at least a few years since I've rented from them at MSY. My previous experience was a long walk over to the Avis Desk from baggage claim, and then over to the enclosed "Bus Stop" for the car. Since that time, the new Rental Car Center has been built, which means nicer facilities, no bus, and an even longer walk. Besides evidence of a golf cart for those who need it, there is no shuttle or other easier transportation option. The Rental Center is really nice, and considering the Louisiana culture it immediately made me wonder how much this place really cost. Maybe that's why the Avis agent was trying so hard to sell me an upgrade - the overhead has to be paid somehow. But soon enough (and 2 Levels up), my car was ready to go and paperless. The way out (and back) was a clear, the guy at the exit was nice, the signage was good, and the car worked well for what I needed. So for what Avis offered, they delivered, albeit with a few too many steps. read more

As a preferred member I expect my reservations to be available when I land. This has been the worst experience I have ever had with Avis. There is no staff at the counter and my reservation is not ready. In a competitive market and a larger airport, this is extremely disappointing. read more

I arrived customer service was good . The car I requested was not what I got but thought ok no big deal I got in check engine light was one so I went back in they gave us a bigger vehicle a Jeep Wrangler the driver side front tire was low she said just fill it with air .so we drove to Biloxi an hour and a half away I did get air tire has a slow leak I did take pictures of the tires they were bad ! Worn out and chunks missing ugh .I talked to someone from Avis at a casino in Biloxi he said I could drive to Gulfport airport and maybe exchange again ugh. We ended up filling tire with air and just driving to New Orleans we had a plane to catch we did make it safely . Not sure if I would rent from them again . read more

I have never been so heartbreakly disappointed and angry at a company before. Confirming reservations, sending you confirmation emails and reservation numbers, e-check-in online and then when we fly across the country, for an EMERGENCY, only to arrive at the airport car rental and be told "so, sorry we are out of cars"... "the website is wrong , because it doesn't show our current inventory". Having to rent a hotel because we can't get a vehicle. Then calling the Avis customer support after hours who says "I am a reservation specialist and my system is more up to, I can see they have your car available now. I assure you! " Having me run in rain from the hotel at 12:30am back to the airport car rental to be told by the manager " I'm sorry we are completely out of vehicles, I can put your name and number on this list we started." Then I call back the customer service ask to speak to a supervisor/manager and am told they have all left and to call back tomorrow. I asked " so you all work completely unsupervised with not one supervisor/manager, even on call? " To which he said simply " yes". My partners mother is in the hospital, we flew across country, had to fly into another state because of a hurricane so we could drive to her and now we are stuck in a completely different state because of Avis. I swear if anything happens to his mother and he doesn't get to see her I am going to raise hell like you have never seen before. read more

Where do I start? I was so appalled by the service here. After being treated so wonderfully at Avis - Baton Rouge airport and Enterprise the past few weeks, I couldn't believe the audacity of this location. Yes, I understand that it was 2:00am, but gosh they could have made stepped up the customer service a bit. First off, there was a written sign on the window that says "please do not approach the window until you are called". They really could have made a more formal sign for this, which doesn't make it seem like they are being total jerks (with attitudes). Second, the clerk did not ask for ID right away and attempted to look for our reservation based on how she thought our name was spelled instead of looking at ID and seeing how it is actually spelled. At 2 in the morning I really don't want to hear that my reservation could not be found. Next, this clerk was just such a horrible communicator. She mumbled something, left the office and proceeded to walk to the car lot. My husband and I absolutely had no idea what she was doing. I guess she was going to check out the car. The real nail on the coffin, was that the car smelled like cigarette smoke, BIG TIME!! It was pretty awful. It really seems like they don't car about the cars they get back here or they allow their employees, who drive the cars to smoke, while on shift; therefore, they get in the cars and smell them up! Anyway, if you choose to be open 24 hours, please equip with staff members that are good with people. For those that are getting in from long flights (late at night or early in the morning) don't want to deal people with awful customer service. read more

We picked up our full size SUV but we had to come on a Lyft because we needed to drop off the car at the airport the next morning for our early flight home. We called and they said just come to the parking lot and have the Lyft driver take you to the garage but dont go in, there is a parking spot next to Avis. So we did, When we got there, the girl tells us to go down into the building because this is for Elite members ONLY and I am NOT an Elite member. Well. So she forces us to go by the rental building we had driven by on our way here; per my telephone instructions. The way she said it was rude but oh well, lets get this car and explore NO. I go down to the lobby and start the process of renting my car when the gal behind that counter starts the upsell. No I don't need the extra insurance my credit card covers Collision Waiver. My response is "Avis doesn't acknowledge any other insurance you will be billed for any damage immediately". Uh ho, maybe I should spend the extra $38, wait that is a 40% increase. No I'm covered and that's when the attitude starts. "Sign here and acknowledge that you are not taking the insurance and will pay for any damage you cause" with a tone that I cannot do justice here. Offer the insurance and move on. Its our choice. Oh car was fine! read more

To be honest, we only chose Avis for our New Orleans trip because they were the only counter that was open past midnight. We had a late flight that landed around 11:15 pm so we didn't want to chance not getting a car! Our first choice was Enterprise or Alamo based on slightly higher ratings, but they are only open til midnight. We are probably one of the rare customers that had no issues when picking up and dropping off the rental vehicle. It literally took 3 minutes and we were on our way both times. Similar to my previous car rental reviews, I would be hesitant to recommend this Avis location solely based on my experience. When things go smoothly, it's great. But dealing with Car Rental agencies always feels like rolling the dice. read more

This might win the award for "The Worst" rental location in the states. From pick up to return the workers were not only rude, they were attempting to be bullying in their behaviors. As a preferred customer they had given an "upgrade" yet this car was far to large and not what we ordered or asked for. Was literally laughed at by the staff when we pointed to a much smaller car. Eventually was able to get that car, but it was no easy task. Was greeted by hostility and anger on our return. NEVER EVER rent from this place!! read more

I work with a large global company and I can't believe they have Avis as a preferred rental car company. The cars are very old and dirty inside. I also experience four employees at the New Orleans Rental Car facility that could or rather would not help me with my return. Even when I tried to call customer arrive to make a complaint, they said I would have to stay on the line to file the compliant and then they could start and investigation, I was then transferred to fax line and the was disconnected. The reservation number could not even help me. This was the worst service I have ever experienced. NEVER AVIS!!! read more

Not recommended for business travelers. I prepaid for my 10 day reservation trying to save my company some money, but when my work scheduled changed and I only needed the car half as long, Avis would not refund the unused days, even when I notified them in advance. Even worse, at the airport when I was picking up my car they wouldn't help me at the desk and had me call the 1-800 number to speak to a customer service agent there about my reservation... only to get told they wouldn't refund me for the unused days. Very poor customer service from Avis. My company has hundreds of employees who book Avis cars for travel, but I'll be recommending that we find a different company to use for our car rental needs. read more

So reading their posted policy in regards to using a credit card vs. debit I was under the impression that my CREDIT CARD would get me through with no hassle. At the counter I met the lady and gave my credit card for the rental. She then told me the computer is asking for a secondary ID or credit check and a deposit. Then she said I don't know why because you have a credit card but that's what it's saying. I don't carry utility bills when I travel and why would I need a credit check for a car rental the car was prepaid. This was the absolute worst car rental I've ever had the displeasure of having to rent from. What's the point of reserving a time to pick up a car when you have to wait hours in a mile long line to get one even after showing up early? Even I am prefer member, 60% times I have to wait for long time to get the car! They really need to improve their services!

I guess I should have read the reviews before I booked. We had reserved a Toyota Camry for our trip 3/17/22-3/19/22, we were "upgraded" to a bottom trim level Kia Sportage, the car was filthy, not filthy as in just dirty, but filthy as in my daughter found an empty beer can under the seat, dirt and debris on the dash, white stuff on the rear seat, really hoping that it was Mayonnaise. It was the only car available from all of the rental places there, so had to take it. Realized after we left that there was no windshield wiper fluid and it also got horrible fuel mileage . The lady working the front desk seemed a little lost on how to book, we had used my wifes card to book the rental and since the rental was in my name, but the card was in her name it took a while to get sorted for us to pay which I found odd because it was a prepaid rental. The rental car location is almost 20 min from the airport and you are forced to wait until the bus is completely full, so need to plan that for the return flight or you could end up late. I really wish I would have taken pictures of the car...unbelievable. I normally rent with Hertz, but figured I would save a few dollars...I will never make that mistake again. read more

Well we pre-rented and pre-paid ahead of time and while in line was praying everything go smooth (because you know how rent-a-car can be.) I've been renting here almost every week since September. After several months of being more or less satisfied I've had a run of bad experiences that have left a bad taste in my mouth. In order of annoyingness: - continuing to rent me Mustangs even though I have told them several times that I don't want to drive a car with a blind spot the size of an elephant - renting me a car with windshield wipers so bad that I could not drive when it was raining, because I literally could not see out the front window - forcing me to pay a ticket that was incurred in a city I have never driven in, during a time when I was 70 miles away at work. I haven't switched to another rental company yet because I have Avis status, but if they screw up again I'll be taking my weekly rentals elsewhere. It's completely ridiculous. read more

Arrived after midnight so limited choices in rental car agencies open- seems like only National and Avis are open until 2 am. Long wait at counter-only 1 person working for both Avis andBudget customers. As an aside the line at National moved quickly as they had 2 employees working. Finally got car assignment, went upstairs to get car only to find assigned space did not exist- agent wrote down E17 and spaces only go as high as 12! Talked to lot attendant and they said it should have been E11. Walk back to E11 and vehicle is a Ford Expedition. I had requested a Toyota Camry and was never told at the desk that it was not available! We had to park all week in the French Quarter so no way that tank of a vehicle would work for us. Back over to lot attendant and they said that there were no other vehicles available and I would have to go back to desk and talk to agent. It's almost 2 am now and desk closes at 2 so I am almost in tears after long day of travel (that was complicated by a tornado warning that made us late to our home airport). Luckily someone pulled in with a Hyundai small SUV that they were returning and the lot attendant said we could take that after it was quickly cleaned. Waited another 10 minutes or so and were able to finally leave to go to our timeshare. The only bright thing about this whole fiasco was how nice and helpful the young person working the lot was that night. I will not use this location of Avis ever again! read more

Not sure what is going on with Avis, but this is the second location where their systems were down. Birmingham, AL was the last. At least this location has the board telling you what space you're in, unlike Birmingham. I usually just look for the board because their email and app notifications are inconsistent. That goes for returning your car through the app as well. This location offers it, but it doesn't pick up your location, so it's a moot point. It just tells you to keep refreshing. It's even more annoying and inconvenient when their systems are down. The gal just kept asking me for my original contract. I didn't keep it because it's in your broken system already, and in my app. After her asking me three times, I finally told her that this was the first time I had ever been asked for it when returning my car. She seemed annoyed by my statement, and only then told me she was asking because their system was down. Why not tell me that upfront? Off to the counter I went :/ read more

I reserved a van for a party of eight to take to a ball game in New Orleans. The reservation was made several weeks in advance. When I flew into NOLA and went to the Avis counter to pick up the vehicle, I was told they didn't have it. After some discussion, they said they might be able to locate one, and ultimately did, but I waited in excess of an hour and we were almost late to the game. I also heard other customers being told that the vehicles they reserved we're simply not available. I don't understand how a reservation can be made without a vehicle actually being reserved. Very frustrating experience. The girls at the counter were pleasant and did everything they could to deal with the problems, but they are clearly working in a broken system that might turn out very badly for Avis customers. I won't be one again if I can help it. read more

I rarely leave reviews but this was just crazy. There are about 15 Avis preferred members waiting for over 45 minutes to get a car that each had reserved and scheduled. They really treat repeat renters well. They're fast; much needed when I'm in a hurry. Love the efficiencies.

I thought the staff was very helpful and friendly, hot wire gave us an excellent rate on the car, couldn't complain, the only thing I thought was a little weird was 2 of our cig outlets didn't work, and no one could do anything about it( like check the fuse ?) , except change out the car. Since it was the last charger on the lot , we went with it. I highly doubt none of the previous renters said anything about it to them, considering the number of gps/ smart phone users out there, so I was a little unhappy. And they put 2 key fobs on an un -separate- able chain, one didn't work, and my boyfriend walked around with a huge key mass hanging from his pants. Weird read more

We arrived in Louisiana and decided to rent a vehicle from Avis. They made a mistake on vehicles. The vehicle we were assigned was not the vehicle found parked in the spot we were told. We ended up getting a better, more roomy vehicle to fit my brothers, parents, and me. However the vehicle has an exposed outlet that I electrocuted myself on. The guard seemed agitated or oblivious. Its hard to explain her attitude, but when we wanted to show her the exposed outlet, she didn't open the door or move around the door. She stared at me like i'm supposed to hold the exposed outlet up to the window for her to see. Once i opened the door to show her, she couldn't maneuver around the door, so she continued to just stare at me. I closed the door, she moved around, I opened it, she saw the outlet, but she didn't seem to care. Still a happy customer, just some negative points. read more

DO NOT RENT HERE. Avis Preferred and a prepaid reservation won't help you. We had a minivan reserved for seven people and seven suitcases only to be told sorry we're out here's a midsize SUV. I have been an Avis Preferred Plus customer for over a decade. Last Sunday, Mother's Day, I flew into New Orleans. I had made reservations about 3 days in advance and had a confirmation number. My name was not listed on the Preferred board and the Preferred customer counter was closed so I went to the regular desk and stood in line for about 10 minutes. The desk clerk had to take me through the entire process as if I was a walk in customer that had never rented a car. The car I reserved was not available. I accepted a different car and went on my way. Very disappointing. As a United Frequent Flyer Hertz offers incentives. One more chance for Avis to get it right, if not I'll give Hertz a chance. read more

The car has tank was suppose to be full, but was given to us at 1/2 a tank, when we told them they said they would mark it at half, but when we read our paperwork, they marked 5/8th of a tank. Near the end of the trip we ended up needing to extend our car use. So we called the automated system to extend our car use length and it didn't work. When we went to drop it off, no one could find the rental date was extended in the system, so we got charged extra. When we called for a manager, we were sent to 3 people before being placed on hold for manager, after 10 minutes of waiting a customer service associate picked up the phone and said he was unable to locate where his manager was. Not that his manager was busy or currently busy, but that he could not physically find him. He was unable to help us as well so I put in my number to speak to corporate to help us. Meanwhile when trying to drop off the car it took us 30 minutes to find a place to park it for drop off because nobody was moving the cars that were dropped off, we ended up parking in the place we weren't supposed to because no one had a free moment to help us. I'm really hoping higher up can help, but so far Avis seems very difficult to work with and almost more work than worth, but the car was nice. read more

We came to the Avis counter after our scumbag airliner, Spirit, left us stranded in New Orleans with no way back home to Chicago short of spending $800 more dollars with another airliner. We were stressed and at our wits end. The Avis employee who assisted us, Dawn, was a bright spot in an awful afternoon. Dawn helped us every step of the way in booking our rental and getting us a great car for a cross-country drive. She was friendly, empathetic, and kind. Also, we thought $200 to rent a car for a full 24 hours and drive it 1,000+ miles was pretty reasonable. Dawn thought enough to rent us a hybrid, too, so gas ended up costing us under $100 (for over a thousand miles!). The only hiccup we experienced was when we returned the car and the checkin agent mistakenly handed the keys BACK to my fiance and my deliriously tired fiance did not realize what had happened until we got home. When we called Avis they told us we could simply overnight mail them, which was a HUGE relief for two people who had just spent around 20 hours in a car. Of course I cannot speak for all of Avis, but this particular experience left us with a positive opinion and we will certainly look into them FIRST if we are in the market to rent another car anytime soon. read more
