Went here for brunch with two of my girlfriends on Saturday and we sat outside. One of the things that drew me to this restaurant was the mimosa presentation. Unfortunately, it was very hot on Saturday and humid and there were a lot of flies. We were told that there were no mimosas at the time... Which was disappointing because who doesn't want a mimosa with their brunch?! The waitress was nice enough to bring out the glass holder with the flowers as a table decoration, which is very nice of her. The food was pretty good and we did have some drinks were decent. When I think of Baltimore, I think of amazing crab. Really good crab dip, crab cakes, crab pretzels, crab EVERYthing. While visiting Baltimore recently I popped into Avenue Kitchen & Bar because I needed to eat some crab. I came in on a weekday during happy hour. The inside only had a couple of people in it and was pretty dark. My friends and I quickly decided to dine outdoors to take advantage of the beautiful day. They have outdoor lounge seating area that is pretty cozy and perfect for looking at all the cute dogs walk by (haha). Our waitress was very nice and made recommendations from the menu. She honestly told me that sometimes their crab cakes are a hit and sometimes they're a miss. I'm glad she was honest because after hearing that I was not about to spend $50 on a crab cake that wasn't good. So I opted for the next best thing... some crab dip especially because it was on happy hour. When I received the food I was shocked to see tortilla chips, bread, side of peppers, and big chunks of crab above a mountain of cheese. This plate is pretty large, especially being on happy hour. I was very curious to taste the crab dip and unfortunately it was very mid..actually below mid. The crab tasted weird and when you moved the 3 big chunks of grab there was almost nothing but cheese and cream cheese mixed together. The crab dip lacked quality crab and flavor. I would not recommend at all and don't think I'll be coming back here for food. What I will say though. The orange crush that I had was delicious! Would definitely come back for drinks, they were on happy hour and a good price. read more

I sat at the bar while I waited for my guest, and she made sure I had water, the menu, and answered questions I had about some of the drinks. The service here was amazing. My waiter his name was King I believe and he was so sweet and helpful. The food on the other hand was not great at all. My fries were soggy from sitting in oil I'm guessing.. The crab dip was terrible. I had to send it back. The kitchen gave me both ends of the bread which I'm guessing was supposed to be garlic bread but I've never had garlic bread where it was just the end of a loaf of bread. I found that to be very weird. The brisket quesadilla was good and my burger was OK but the bun was a little wet at the bottom it a coating of butter or something on the inside of a bun that took away from a really great burger. The drinks were pretty good. The highlight of my experience was the service. He made sure we were accommodated and bought out a piece of cake for my son's birthday. Avenue is a lively place during brunch. My friend and I went on a Saturday around 3p. It was pretty packed In there. Our waiter was a nice guy, but he did not check on us and we had to wait a long time to be Abel to request things during our service. The only reason I mention that is there is an automatic gratuity added to all checks, but the service didn't reflect the extra $30+ we were forced to tip. The food was okay. I had the short rib grilled cheese and a side of cornbread. The cornbread was tasteless to me. It came with a fruity dipping sauce that saved it. The short rib grilled cheese was great. It was flavorful and a good amount of cheese. I reheated it later and it was still good. My friend ordered the chicken meal and a side of mashed potatoes. She didn't receive the mashed potatoes until we were almost finished eating and you can see in the photo how they came out. Very bland. Be prepared to wait a while for your food. They say everything is made fresh. I would love to revisit another time outside of brunch to see if there's any improvement in the service. read more

Hidden (and expensive) gem on the Ave in Hamden. Street level entrance leads you to a walkway to the basement. Unfinished brick walls. Comfortable seats and large tables. Everyone working wanted to make sure your wants were addressed. Limited menu choices. Pretty standard options. I went for the crab dip which came with toast, Tostitos, pretzels and pickled veggies. The dip was good. A bit watery and not much crab, but flavorful and paired well with the toast. The melted cheese on top looked nice but made it hard to eat. Cost for the one course was 27 dollars. An automatic 20% tip is added to the bill. At least the service was good enough to warrant it. read more

I've been wanting to visit Avenue Kitchen and Bar for a while and finally got to check it out. If you're familiar with "the Avenue" in Hampden, then you know parking can be ridiculous in this area. But if you don't mind paying a little extra, there's a paid lot directly behind the restaurant and since there's an entrance to the restaurant at the back, it makes for easy access. I went with my cousin who has already been to AKB several times. I ended up ordering a mango margarita and got the roasted half chicken as my meal. The roasted chicken was done Caribbean style...basically, it was jerk chicken. I'm not a jerk chicken expert so it may not be up to certain standards of those from the Caribbean but it was pretty tasty. The chicken came with fried plantains, brussel sprouts and a pilaf-style rice. Everything was so good. I loved loved loved the brussel sprouts! I also loved the crispy garlic chips on the rice. The only thing I could've done without was the massive sprinkling of microgreens all over the dish. They didn't taste bad but I felt like they were in the way. I would've preferred a little less of that on my plate. Maybe they just really cared about my nutrition and wanted to give me an extra boost of nutrients. Who knows? Our server was great! She had a very bubbly, upbeat personality and everything came out as it was ordered. One of the owners came by to check on us which was also a nice touch. Brunch here is delicious and a real bargain. The crushes are very fruity, and you can get a flight (that they call a tree), and there is a bottomless option. The shrimp and grits swims in a flavorful, umami sauce, the waffle is fluffy and crispy, and the breakfast burrito was also quite good. The service here seems to be a bit of a challenge, but it's totally worth it. read more

Recently visited for City-Poly Fest's Throwback Thursday. I indulged in 2 of their specials for Thursday night. 20.00 bottles of wine and 20.00 Steak Night. The easiest and best dining decision I made in some time. Though service was appallingly slow, my food came out in a timely manner and hot! My steak was cooked to requested order. Additionally, the brussels sprouts were to die for! Great Value for 20.00. They have quite a few options for 20.00 wine bottles. I was impressed at their selection. From Rose to Malbec, they had you covered. I was unimpressed with the bubbles option. In no world is a bottle of Wycliff 20.00 LOL. I'd probably visit again but, not on a specialty event night. Been here for the HH a few times and enjoy the wings and drinks. Went specifically to give Steak Night a try. You get the Ny strip with brussels sprouts and truffle fries for $30. Honestly, it exceeded my expectations. The steak was cooked exactly how I asked and I was surprised at the portion size. My only complaint is the they go a little crazy with the Parmesan on the fries. Outside of that, it was really good. Thursdays are also R&B and wine night so there was a DJ playing some oldies but goodies and current hits over dinner. read more

The warm bread pudding was not on the HH menu but well worth the regular price. The crusty edge, caramel sauce, and homemade whipped cream combined was amazing! Absolutely recommend this dessert! They had the movie "Mac & Devin Go to High School" on the TV which had very inappropriate scenes playing. Not something you'd expect in a public space. This place is amazing! I love their outdoor seating...it almost feels like you're in someone's backyard. They only have three of them, but they have these "outdoor patio couches." They also have brunch every day with drink specials, I think from 12-3pm. This also seems like a great place to go for happy hour. So many drink options! I came here for lunch and was excited about their brunch and drink specials. I ordered a mango margarita and it was strong & delicious! Woo!! I also ordered the chicken and waffles and it was perfection. Crispy waffle with juicy fried chicken plus a spicy maple syrup. It was a lot, so I ate half and excited to eat the other half tomorrow. We frequent 36th street often and have been wanting to try this place for a while. Simply put, I was very underwhelmed. Let's get into it. We wanted to enjoy the nice weather so we decided to sit in the outside lounge section. It took a while for someone to come and greet us. We were eventually greeted with waters by a man and another young lady made it to our table to take our orders. It was happy hour so we decided to try the smoked honey old baby wings for half the price. I also ordered a sangria at this time. The sangria was nice. The wings were cooked well but lacked flavor. The wings could definitely stand a bit more old baby! A short while after, we ordered entrees. I decided on the jerk chicken tacos w/ rice and beans and my husband decided to try the lamb chops w/ mashed potatoes and asparagus. Now, the jerk chicken tacos were nothing to be excited about. Shredded chicken breast barely seasoned topped with pico and a thin sauce reminiscent of curry. The rice and beans were just regular nothing special. My husband enjoyed the lamb chops. The mashed potatoes did not taste homemade and lacked flavor. The lamb chops were okay flavor wise but the consistency in the cut of each was off. Some lamb chops chunky and others thinner. All in all, this was a one and done stop. I have no desire to return for subpar food. read more

Avenue is located on 36th street of Hampden which is essentially the trendy/hipster area of town. Came here for Happy Hour and wasn't sure what to get. The waitress recommended that we try the crushes ($7), which apparently is a Maryland staple and is pretty much a shaved ice cocktail. Although the drinks were refreshing, they weren't very strong at all which is why I didn't give this place a higher rating. The outdoor seating area is really nice, especially if you are able to snag one of the couches and they have huge umbrellas so you don't have to worry about the sun. They also played some awesome old school R&B slow jams the whole time which added to the laid back vibe :) read more

On an unexpectedly quiet Friday for lunch, we happened into a disquietlingly quiet and empty subgrade restaurant and bar called Avenue and found the lunch fare unexpectedly generous and delicious. The music was loud as though they expected a full house of revved-up revelers to '70s funk and disco music, which added to the oddity of the experience. Service was a tad slow given the absence of other patrons, but very personal and charming once someone realized we were standing there. The breakfast burrito and the cheeseburger both were large, hot and delicious. The fare as a little steep for lunch, but maybe par for the neighborhood. We dropped $70 for two diet cokes and the aforementioned with tax and tip. Somehow we thought the slow service was not our waiter's fault - Jimmy was the only employee we saw and hs probably is ovderworked and they are undermanned. We took pity on Jimmy, economically, with a generous tip. Finally, we got the sense that lunch is not the Avenue's forte. Everything about the space, decor and menu suggested that its a hip and trendy bar that happens also to do an excellent job with lunch. GLOWS: - We were able to walk in without a reservation and be seated immediately. - They have a medium size dining area, a bar area, and sidewalk style, outdoor seating (with some lounge seating) - Although the dining area is not huge, they are still able to accommodate large parties. - Music plays throughout and at a respectable volume. Loud enough to hear it but low enough that you are not screaming across the table. - Sweet chilly wings were good. - Cornbread is not listed on the menu, but I got a side of it and it was really good! GROWS: - After being seated, everything took extremely long . - Took 15 minutes to get water and be greeted by a server. - Took an additional 30 minutes for appetizer wings. I also ordered fries at the same time that never came. Almost an hr after ordering I cancelled them and I saw them come out 5 minutes after that. - The chicken on the chicken and waffles was so dry that it wasn't even edible--very disappointing after waiting 30+ minutes for it to come out. Had to wait another 20 minutes for a replacement meal. - The steak on the steak grilled cheese came in strips and was extremely tough and chewy. Not wanting to send another meal back, we coped with it. They could benefit from chopping it into smaller pieces and mixing it in with the cheese. I have tried numerous Hampden restaurants, but my experience at Avenue has to be by far my favorite! Especially because of their Thursday $25 Steak Night Deal! The restaurant is located in the lower-level(ish) area, so when you walk in, you would immediately be led to a downhill hallway. We went in on Thursday at 6:00 pm, which was not super busy. The $25 Steak Night Special comes with a Prime filet, truffle fries, steak sauce, and crispy Brussels sprouts. We got 2 drinks, which were fantastic!! Sadly, I cannot remember the name of them. The steak plate was decorated beautifully, and everything worked so well together. I am not a big fan of Brussels sprouts, but the way the Brussels sprouts were cooked made me see Brussels sprouts in a different light. The portion size for truffle fries was enormous, I certainly was not able to finish. Overall, the Thursday Steak Night is BEYOND worth it for its $$ and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves steak! read more

Cause I could've sworn I was only there on the 5th. I was in Owings Mills all last night and this morning.. then home for the rest of the day -- so how exactly did I get to the restaurant DAYS later to spend an additional $77 dollars see when you try to support Black businesses.. smh Will never come back and I am updating my following on social media about this incident. Jaleapeno adds a hint of spice to the ceasar dressing, just enough heat, never overpowering. The cotija cheese is a great complement to the jalapeno dressing. I added a crab cake. This was my first time coming here. We came for a meeting/event. And we reserved the back room to have a little more privacy. First let me add that I loved the waiter was so kind and he didn't keep coming in and interrupting us. He was very attentive and discreet when coming back to check on us without interrupting our meeting. Ok now on to the food, everything was great. I ordered a Frose before our party got here. It was so good! I wish I had ordered another one. We also had some house wines (white and red). I'm usually not a fan of guacamole but this was very good and the texture wasn't too gritty for me. The wings were seasoned really well and not too spicy. I will be coming back for happy hour! Perfect happy hour spot! If you're looking for a spot with good food and drinks, this is definitely that place for you. I've been here several times and each time was great. I typically get there as soon as happy hour starts so I can get a decent parking spot (by 5:30/6 it can be challenging to find a spot nearby). My favorite dish is the steak quesadilla, it is packed with meat and cheese and is de-friggin-licious! I've also tried their dinner, fried chicken (delicious, juicy, and crispy) with baked macaroni (it's ok) and collard greens (it's ok as well). The drinks are also amazing. We went to Avenue Kitchen and Bar for happy hour before walking down to see the lights on 34th street. Our party of five shared a few different things and I didn't get pictures of everything. We ordered sweet chili wings, nachos, crab dip, buffalo cauliflower, a shrimp basket, falafel and chicken and waffle. I also had a strawberry margarita and a spicy margarita. All of the food was good and I'm sure we'll go back soon. I don't eat seafood but my friends said that the crab dip was one of the best in the area. The wings were crispy. I really liked the cauliflower and it's accompanying sauce. The chicken and waffle were okay- the waffle was delicious but the chicken was under seasoned. Ordered the coconut henny and old fashion they were ok but had a lot of Juice. The sweet chili wings were tasty, the grilled veggies were great. The veggies were seasoned perfectly and came with an amazing sauce. We also Had a turkey burger and a regular burger both were cooked perfectly and tasted great. They were huge burgers. Towards the end of our dinning experience a big group came in so the service got a little slow because there was only one waitress. i was meeting a friend and they suggested this place so decided to check it out. overall it's a nice upper casual place but the prices are high and ours has 20% gratuity already included even though we were two people we got the roasted veggies platter, the crispy Brussel sprouts, and the steak with sides. the brussel sprouts were good and my friend said the steak was decent - the sides were very good. the veggie platter itself was alright, but the next day when i combined the brussel sprouts and veggies then it tasted better overall the place offered decent food in a nice ambiance; though not sure it was worth the high price read more

The vibe is very nice here. It's a nice chill after work or late evening spot that plays music. It was a little crowded but we were able to get a large party sat fairly quickly. The food was good I had the chicken and waffles. My friends said that the crab dip and Brussel sprouts were delicious as well. I didn't have any drinks but my friends said that they were tasty and strong. The manager stopped to make sure everyone was ok and had what they needed, and the waitress was awesome. On my continued trek across Baltimore to eat all the fried chicken sandwiches and crown the one true victor, I came to Avenue kitchen and bar. I placed an order for pick-up through their toast tab. I arrived a couple of minutes late because I got a flat tire and my food was waiting for me at the host table. The host spent several minutes going to get me a bill even though I had already paid online. When they arrived with the bill I told them I had already paid and I was handed my food, no fuss! The food, I got the fried chicken sandwich, brussels, and a side salad. For a $16 fried chicken sandwich I was ready to be wowed and I was not. The chicken had great seasoning but was totally dry and chewy. The sauce is some of the best chicken Sammy sauce I have had yet. The sprouts were great, crispy and tender, amazing curry aioli. The salad was a classic, I loved the mixture of texture and and acidity from the peppers, pickled onions and cucumbers. Walked into the restaurant to eat and see the Ravens vs Chiefs game. The place was somewhat empty except for the bar area. Food was good. During halftime, a fight broke out in the bar area. After the involved parties left, the manager approached the only two white couples in the restaurant to apologize and possibly pay for their bills. The manager did not address the remaining customers who were all black, sitting in the bar and the dining room. Another patron noticed and said she would not be back. Really disappointing. Picked this spot for my boyfriend's birthday dinner - the Yelp description and IG account boasted holiday cocktails, unique wine, and craft beer, pics of food looked delicious. We walked in last night around 8pm and it was empty - maybe two other tables while other spots in Hampden were busy. Our server was rude; when I asked about the wine list, she sighed and listed basic types of wine ("We have pinot grigio, chardonnay, merlot"). I asked about the beer list and she impatiently tapped on her notepad, glanced over at the bar and said, "I don't know. Miller lite, bud, heineken." The IG page showed a holiday cocktail list; the menu still had summer drinks. I didn't bother to ask her about those drinks based on her first two answers. It wasn't busy at all; even if it was, the beer and wine list aren't available at the table - you have to ask the server. After she walked away, my boyfriend and I decided to leave.
