I agree with my fellow Yelpers who've said Ava Roasteria isn't their favorite coffee place. I live about 3 minutes from there and have been a handful of times for coffee and a breakfast sandwich. The coffee is average and my experience with the people behind the counter has been less than stellar. I mean, if you aren't a morning person, don't work the morning shift! They have a nice assortment of pastries, muffins, and bagels on display. I've ordered the breakfast sandwich a few times but ouch!, almost $9. It isn't anything special either. Value-wise, you're better off getting an overpriced Starbuck's sandwich. I do love the location and view of the quarry, it's actually a decent place to bird watch. The outside seating is wonderful during nice weather. Ava Roasteria is also open til 1am if you need coffee at that time of the morning. I can see why it's a great place to study or get work done. Had a hard time choosing between 3 and 4 stars today. I'd like to give 3 to the employees that I interacted with. No smile, and disengaged. I had to really work hard to get them to interact, and each question I asked was met with a blank stare. However, when the light did click in their head with the answer to my simple questions they were very polite. I still have hope for them. I liked this locations set up and flow. A group of 4 of us ate dinner here last night. It wasn't busy when we got there at 4:30 but was pretty busy when we left at 6:30. They sat us at a table with a view of the lake and we watched people feed the geese and ducks. The food was very good. I had the stuffed salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus, my husband had the (huge) Cobb salad, one friend had a hamburger and fries and one had the butter squash ravioli. If you would have asked me about Ava Roasteria a few years ago I would have given my rating a 5 star plus, but today a 3 and that's pushing it!!! My experiences up till now have been absolutely wonderful... The coffee... The pastries... The friendliness... The ambiance... Absolutely the best!!! However, this was when you had older more experienced barista's that knew, not only good customer service, but what it meant to work an espresso machine... They aren't trained on long and short pulls or the differences between house coffee and an espresso apparently, because one of the barista's as I was watching her tried to pass off house coffee in my drink as an espresso shot that I had paid extra for... Unacceptable!!! They don't understand that it doesn't really matter what flavors you put in a coffee drink to enhance the flavors if the coffee itself is not up to par... If your not trained to understand the science of the coffee bean and the balance of what the machine can do for it's flavors... Than your just another cashier working a coffee machine... read more

I bought a Strawberry Smoothie here, yesterday and it was pretty good. The barista put ice cream in it. From the many late nights of studying for exams in high school, to preparing for interviews Ava's has always been a sanctuary for me to hide away and study (and goof off some times). I stopped in to do some work for my remote job. I don't drink coffee, so I always get hot chocolate. When my drink order was called, I took a sip and it was barely warm. No big deal, but I do hate to be a pest. (it wasn't my fault though!)...I had to ask for her to make it hotter. She was fine with it and made me a new drink. They use real chocolate chips, so that's a bonus! I took my little paper cup with the plastic lid and started typing away. I grabbed my new, hot cup of delicious cocoa for my 2nd sip and toppled over it went. You're thinking, okay, it has a lid...just turn it upright and most is saved. Nope! The lid fell right off with it and it went everywhere. The nice kids at the next table ran over with some napkins and I ran up to the girls working there and told them of my humiliation. One of the girls came over and mopped my mess up. I asked her, sheepishly, if I could get another drink since I didn't get to drink 95% of mine. They did. I am going to be brief, though I must admit, it really burns me to change the rating again - they seemed to be doing so good for a while there (6 months) and now they are back to the same old problems they had when I first reviewed them - too many untrained/new baristas and a lack of quality control that results from under-staffing or a lack of training and available management.. Unfortunately, I am burned out on spending my $10 coffee money there when it seems like they have A LOT of new people (often 2 newbies working together with no one to help them) making coffee and the coffee has just been cruddy. Like throw it out after 1/2 the drink cruddy. I still like their sandwiches, snacks and location and as compared to Starbucks and their senior staff (when you can catch one) can actually make a tasty drink. I do not know anything about coffee, I just know what I like. Almost everywhere has better coffee. The atmosphere is great. I don't need that, but great for a big group. 5 of my friends like to meet together on Fridays at 6am for an hour. But the employees are almost always late 5, 10, 15 min. I tried to talk to the manager 3 times, but he/she does not return my call. It is only $20 of lost business and Sesame Donuts seems to be able to get the doors open. Disappointing. The location is fantastic, but bad service and bad coffee = no go. My family came here for an after-lunch drink and the cashier/barista was foot-tapping arms-crossed impatient with us when we were looking at the menu. It's not like there were other people behind us. I had an iced mocha and it was lacking both chocolate flavor and espresso. How does that even happen? It tasted watered down. For the price, it just wasn't worth it. I live very close to this location. Out of the whim on my morning walk I decided to grab a coffee. My norm iced vanilla latte. Nothing crazy, very simple to make. Easy right? Pretty sure the gal made coffee flavor milk. I had to come home make my own coffee to mix in it. I've been here a good handful and I'm always willing to give another try. However after this time (5th time or so) I won't be returning. Shame because I do love to sit on there patio. Ps. If your going to employ high school students for the AM shift make sure they actually want to be there. Firstly, the staff is VERY welcoming and just genuinely kind. They are very helpful in answering questions about the menu and were very patient with indecisive customers like myself :) I made my final decision with the Chicken Rustica which has seriously become my favorite sandwich. Nope. Oy vey, the only reason why I go is I live 2 minutes from here. First off, it's overpriced for what you get. Want almond milk? That's pretty much an extra dollar. The coffee tastes burnt, so make sure to get it mixed with whatever. The pastries are stale, I take a bite and am covered in a mess of sticky flakes. Again, very overpriced. They charge the same as Starbucks, but at least SB's employees are enjoyable to interact with. That's another thing that really bugs me. I'm confident, assertive and have worked in customer service for decades. Looking down the entire time you're taking my order as if a child being punished is confusing and annoying. There are two people I enjoy conversing with here, both are male (surprised? I'm not!). The women who work here all seem to suffer from the same syndrome of either sheer rudeness or low self esteem, lack of not caring? Here's a tip, pull up your big girl panties and do the unimaginable. Smile, take my order and oh I don't know... perhaps make eye contact? I know it's horrible, these kids are conditioned to be so fragile now. I promise I'm not scary, I won't bite and if you actually acknowledge me I will leave a tip. To sum up my very long experience with this place. You'll be waiting a good 15+ minutes. I've missed the bus before due to this multiple times cause I like to make life as difficult as possible. - Lack of outlets, so pre-charge laptop before arriving OR just look out for a seat to open up near an outlet. It's always a gamble. - Coffee isn't very good. This makes me question what exactly is causing this? Too high a temperature? Low quality or stale beans? Sigh. This place could have been good. It could have been great. Instead, it's barely mediocre. Tables are plenty, but outlets are few and far between so if you're coming here to work, expect to side eye the couple sitting and chatting at the table by the outlets for an hour before they leave. Finally, they're gone. You plug in your computer and get ready to work when...what? Wifi not working? Seriously, nearly every time I come the wifi is either incredibly slow or not working at all. I guess they're trying to bring cafes back to their former glory when people just drank coffee and actually talked to each other. Okay, my laptop is away. I decide to drink my coffee and just read a book. It's good to be away from technology for a bit, right? I take a sip. Wait...what is this? This isn't coffee. I have to say neither location, Horizon or Hall, are really doing what they need to be doing. You come to a cafe to relax, treat yourself to a pastry or drink and have a nice morning or afternoon break. At both places it seems like the staff are somewhat bothered with helping you. The pastries are average. The seating isn't anything special -- no comfy chairs. For Horizon specifically the Caesar salad with chicken was just bad. And the girls behind the counter were distracted and didn't notice they called my name while I was in the bathroom, so my salad sat for a while before I noticed it and got up to get it myself. It wasn't very busy and one of them could have watched for me or at least called my name again. Would make a point to avoid this one especially with La Provence kicking ass next door. read more

My partner and I ordered some desserts to share. We got a cannoli, a fruit tart and a slice of the raspberry chocolate cake. The ordering and delivery process were smooth and no issues. The fruit tart shell was soggy, when I worked at a bakery the shells would get like that after sitting out for more than one day. The cake was super dry which is unfortunate because the flavor was nice but the dryness made it hard to eat. The cannoli was decent, just needed slightly more filling. If you live near here, you probably already come. The best thing about the place is the location - it sits next to a body of water and a fun kids fountain. In the summer they open up the wall out to the fountain to give that great indoors/outdoors place. Of course, in the winter, you don't want to sit next to these walls but they give light when there is so very little of it in Oregon. Beyond the garage walls, overall, the place has a very weird aesthetic or lacks one. I honestly can't tell. They don't mind people sitting around reading, studying, playing games, surfing the internet, whatever with only a minimal purchase of a house coffee. They have incredible hours - they open early and stay open late (midnight) The WiFi isn't great but it is free. There are parts of the place where you have good reception, others where it is crap. I don't think it is every great. They have a very limited set of power outlets. Once people get to them they often stay more than an hour so don't hold your breath in hopes of getting one. Coffee. I know you think I'm joking but they have some of the worst coffee I've tasted. I'm not only talking about the house coffees (I challenge you to taste any difference between their roasts) but also the espresso coffees. I'm pretty sure the baristas haven't even watched a YouTube on how to make an espresso, Americano, or latte. I guess there is a reason baristas apprentice for years. But go ahead, ask your barista to make yours with latte art. A good chuckle will brighten your day. Tea. By contrast, the teas are all pretty good - but be warned I'm normally a coffee drinker so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. I like the green ones and the white one. They are not only pretty but taste nice. Pastries. I am pretty sure they make their own pastries but there is a reason there are professional pastry chefs. My advice would be grab a pastry from New Seasons and bring it with you. They don't seem to mind people bringing in food from other places. Everything is super sweet and not very light and fluffy. The coconut macaroons are perfect to split with someone. If the key thing you are looking for is a comfortable place to sit around, this is it. Worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. I am not one to complain about customer service nor am I one to return a food/drink item even when my order is wrong. The past three times I have been to this Ava, my drink has either tasted poor, taken forever to be made, or never was made until I asked where it was. The customer service has been lacking significantly more times than not as the staff has not been welcoming and they rarely smile (yes I get masks are required but their eyes are not friendly). I feel more like I am an inconvenience to them then a customer. I have not complained about these experiences as I keep hoping things will improve but today I have decided to share my experience as it was horrific. I hope that this review can encourage the owner to make positive changes to promote a welcoming/friendly environment where there is communication when things don't go smoothly. Honestly, with this experience, I would love it if an Insomnia replaced this location as that is a welcoming environment. I usually go to Ava when I am looking to walk around the shopping area/pond with my toddler as it is not my favorite coffee place and based upon past experiences. Upon ordering, the female (who I later found out was named Sydney who said she was the manager?) who took our order advised us that the sandwich would take 20 minutes to make since there were 4 sandwiches in ahead of us. I told her that was fine and I very much appreciated the forewarning. Well 20 minutes pass and I go to the sandwich maker (who I found out was Collin as I appreciated his service) and asked about it and he said he didn't have my order and asked who took my order. I pointed to the female who took my order. He said he would look into it. A few minutes later, there was a sandwich on the bar and I asked Sydney if that was the sandwich I ordered. She said it was a sandwich with turkey and not bacon (which I ordered). She did not exactly answer my question so I wasn't sure what to do. At that time, another customer asked Sydney if it was her sandwich on the bar and Sydney said "no., it's with turkey and not bacon." Again, that was not an answer to the question so this customer, seemingly looking for some sort of additional information said, "okay....I guess I will just wait." Still no communication from anyone about our order's status so I wasn't sure if I was expected to just take the sandwich I didn't order so I asked her if I should just take the sandwich on the bar. She said "No. Just give me a second." As she was making beverages, I heard her very annoyingly say (through her mask mind you), "I wish I could kick that baby out!" This was clearly my child as he was squealing by this point. I was not sure what to do so I walked away. I am not one to allow my child to scream without taking him outside as I find it embarrassing myself so my husband took my toddler outside. Once my husband and toddler were walking out of the door, I went to the Sydney who was now taking orders and asked her if I could just get my money back since it is clear she wants us to leave based on the comment she made about wanting to "kick my baby out." Her response was "I was trying to get the order right." There was no apology whatsoever and only justification. I asked her for her name, which she gave me was Sydney and asked who her manager was. She said that she was the manager. I told her that it is really unfortunate that she is the manager and making comments about wanting to kick babies out. I told her that we would already be out of here had our order been made correctly in the first place. At this time, poor Collin came up to me with my sandwich and told me this was the correct sandwich and I could take it. I told him I appreciate how nice he has been and made sure to get his name. I fully believe in reporting any positive with the negative and I think Collin did an excellent job while likely being embarrassed by his manager's behavior himself. Sydney then said she refunded our money and it would show up in 5 business days. I told her thank you and walked out. I do appreciate that she refunded the entire purchase amount, and not just the sandwich but I cannot believe she would make this comment about my child, especially as the manager. There were no apologies. None. Had there been communication about the status of the order and/or an apology for the inaccurate order, that would have made a big difference. Her actions and statements were the worst customer service I have ever experienced by ANY person, let alone a "manager." I hope that this review can be shared and can be an opportunity for growth and improvement. I understand things may be stressful in the given moment and this manager may not have been kid-friendly but perhaps she shouldn't be working in a place where children are present if she is that inpatient. read more

It's a shame I have to agree with all the other reviews regarding lackluster customer service. Some days it's decent and other days it is non existent. The coffee is good and the location in Progress Ridge is awesome especially in the Summer. I'm done trying to give this place chances. They better get a manager in there that cares before they close with so many other coffee shops in the area customers can pick from.
