Then there's the mini chocolate chip ricotta cake, which is honestly one of the best bites I've had in recent memory. The vibe is elevated but effortless. I hadn't eaten breakfast before my delivery, so I looked in the case to see if there were vegan options. I spied a vegan zucchini muffin and got that. It was just okay. As I was entering the elevator to do my delivery, I saw a sign that said every other Thursday, Harder Day was doing Happy Hour. I enquired about it, they weren't really sure how it was going to work. I thought it was a cool idea for people that worked in the building. If I'm in the neighborhood during one of their Happy Hours, I would be happy to try them out!

Commercial espresso machine making pretty much whatever kind of coffee drinks you want. I opted for my usual hot Americano benchmark, and not disappointed. Strong and really hot with a side of half-n-half to cream up to my own level. Super nice case of pastries also. Opted for an almond and chocolate chip biscotti. So happy, nice and fresh and soft as opposed to most biscotti that are stale and hard. Really enjoyed that with the coffee on the front porch, taking in the beautiful flowers all around this house. A couple of skilled barista's helped me at the counter and even brought my coffee out to the front porch for me. That's the kind of Service I like. If you're walking around the historic District of Aurora, highly recommend a stop here to give your feet rest and to Enjoy some really good coffee. Most of the people seemed to know each other. I ordered a small iced latte with oat milk and a scone. The latte was expensive but tasted fine. My iced soy vanilla latte was so perfect and kid's iced tea was pronounced extremely yummy so we came back again today as we have a standing Saturday morning therapy appointment near here around brunch time. We got arepas and empanadas today and they were DELICIOUS. So freaking good. Just perfect ,the empanadas were like my former sister in law from Guatamala used to make. Only better. Woooah.And the arepas were amazing too. Oozing with melty cheese. The drinks were also spot on again (my sweet toothed kid got a ton of sugar this time in the iced tea as requested and was very happy) and the barista is lovely. The barista last week was too. Both are very friendly and good at their job. Support this place. Go get yourself an espresso and tasty food. It is delicious!

I've lived in Portland for about six years, and I can honestly say I have never been so consistently disappointed by a cafe. This is not based on one bad experience. I've probably been to Maplewood around ten times over the last few years. It's in the neighborhood, the cafe itself is cute, and the food and drinks are generally good, so I kept giving it another chance. Somehow, each visit has been more frustrating than the last. The biggest issue is the service. I have genuinely never experienced such consistent indifference from waitstaff. There's a tiny counter at the front, and the line will often stretch well into the next room. Meanwhile, three or four employees may be moving around behind the counter without acknowledging the people waiting at all. No "We'll be with you in a minute," no greeting, no indication that they've even noticed you. You just stand there watching them until someone eventually decides to take your order. It creates such an uncomfortable atmosphere. Every time I come in, I feel like I'm inconveniencing the staff simply by being a customer. And then there's the wait for the food. The food and drinks are good, but I've repeatedly waited 45 minutes to an hour for things as simple as a bowl of potatoes or a warmed-up piece of quiche. At a certain point, the quality of the food does not make up for the overall experience. Today was the final straw. Someone cut directly in front of me in line and the staff said nothing. Each person ahead of me then seemed to stand at the counter for ages before anyone helped them. When it was finally my turn, the first thing I was told was that they were "pretty much out of all food," despite the cafe not closing for another hour. When I decided to just leave, the person at the register looked genuinely delighted that I wasn't ordering and gleefully said "okay bye!" I genuinely do not understand what the deal is with this place. If this had happened once or twice, I would chalk it up to a bad day or a staffing issue. But this has been remarkably consistent over multiple years, regardless of who is working. The lack of hospitality almost feels intentional. After five years in Portland, Maplewood has unfortunately come to embody some of the things I find most frustrating about the city's restaurant scene: high prices, painfully slow service, an oddly dismissive attitude toward customers, and the sense that you should somehow feel grateful they've agreed to serve you at all. I kept coming back because I really wanted to like this place but I'm done trying lol. Pathetic.
