My car suddenly developed a loud noise in the exhaust system. I took it to a Midas, and they said "you broke the front pipe of your catalytic converter, your only option is to replace the entire thing, that will cost $650." That sounded like too much, so I went to Auto Tech Service. Jose at Auto Tech said "you can either replace the entire catalytic converter for $470, or I can cut off the front pipe and weld a replacement for $250." So of course that is what I did! They saved me $400, and when I mentioned that my accelerator pedal was "sticking", they fixed that also, without charging me anything additional. read more

I'll add to the chorus and say this place is great. My partner and I recently inherited an old Honda that needed new CV and bellows boots to pass D.C. inspection. Based on Yelp reviews and location, we decided to call Auto Tech Service (ATS) for an estimate. Over the phone (and without looking anything up!), the guy gave us a few options and broke down pricing. It was cheaper than other places we called, and the guy sounded quite knowledgeable, so we decided to give it a whirl. Flash forward a few hours. Miguel called and said the car actually needed less repair than the D.C. inspectors indicated--that we, in effect, had ordered too much work and could pass while shaving $150 off our total repair bill. Call me cynical, but I was really impressed with the honesty. As others have indicated, this is a small, nondescript space. Brought in my 21 year-old Buick, dreading needing a new AC compressor. My old mechanic back in LA ran the dye test a year ago and diagnosed it as a compressor leak. $700 or so. Extremely pleased with my experience, do recommend. They fixed the driver's side window motor on my car. Dropped it off at 8am, and picked it up around 3, and now the window goes down!!! OMG!! The cost was comparable to my expectation, in fact slightly lower. Additionally, the handle from my door panel had snapped off about six months ago, and they reattached it as a courtesy. They also screwed in the bottom of my door panel too, which had been loose for months. Those extra services made my day, and overshadowed the fact that they accidentally broke something I left in my car: I had left a glass document frame on the passenger's seat when I dropped the car off. Because the driver's door doesn't open from the inside, the driver has to exit out the passenger's side (ridiculous, I know). But when I picked the car up, the frame was shattered, no doubt while someone was attempting the awkward exit. I didn't have a huge attachment to the frame, and the teller knocked $15 off my repair for the trouble, plus the mechanics cleaned up all the glass and vacuumed the seat for me. Because they willingly made efforts to right their wrong, I still very much recommend this shop. No longer do I have to yell at drive-through tellers through a glass barrier, or engage in insane acrobatics to "take a ticket." Thank you, Auto Tech!!! read more

When my car broke down on 16th St I pulled Yelp Mobile out on my phone and found Auto Tech had great reviews. He quoted me a fair price, came in under quote, and filled the tires with air, topped off the fluids...Then fixed my shifter which had been locking, and corrected a problem with my exhaust my other mechanic had caused (who is a friend I definitely trust) and did it all at no extra cost. They replaced my McPherson struts a few months ago, but it started making noise again. They didn't charge me a dime. I dropped in without calling and they said they'd be happy to have a look at it, if I wouldn't mind waiting-- there's a Starbucks four blocks away. 45 minutes later, I get a phone call that the car is fine, that the previous mechanic had forgotten to reset the light when I got my oil changed, and that there would be no charge. He also went above and beyond to let me know about upcoming repairs and the timeline I have for those, from conservative to the very longest I could wait. These guys are awesome. I broke my side view mirror off and needed just the mirror replaced. I was expecting to pay about 150-200 dollars. I also needed an oil change. Miguel told me he'd call me when the mirror came in and then they could do all the work on the same day. They did excellent work, didn't tell me that my car needed forty other repairs (they didn't try to sell me anything, which was refreshing!). AND...I got an oil change and a new mirror for $80. I had trouble with my electric window, it wouldn't close, and of course on a Friday afternoon. I went to the shop without an appointment and the owner offered to park my car safely in their garage until they could look at it the next day. That alone would have been great already, but before I even entered the garage, he came out and checked the window lift right there in the street. Turned out that the electric panel inside the door was loose. He popped it back in and didn't charge me anything. I've been to car shops as a woman and they almost always try to overcharge for checking things out and labor. I visit in early-September for an oil change and to address potential expensive steering and cooling system fixes. Received a quote that was well-below expectations, and my car back in great shape in just a few hours. The A/C started acting up again a few weeks later, and I brought the car back in. Apparently a rat (yeah city living!) had been chewing on a hose, which had caused the problem--which they fixed again for me, but without charge. Amazing to me. Having just moved from Chicago several months ago I was looking for a honest and competent mechanic. After reading reviews on yelp, I called them up and asked for an estimate to replace the timing belts and water pump on my 1996 Honda Accord. Additionally, I inquired whether I could bring my own parts to save $$$,. They agreed and the whole job cost me around $450, not including parts, a considerable saving from the estimates I got that ranged from $700 to $1500. First feedback I've left on Yelp. This place is great. GREAT. Dirty as hell, simple, just a lot of really great mechanics. There is no computer system, everything is kept on a couple legal pads and somehow they always manage to keep track of things. You can stroll up same day with an emergency and they'll make time for you. These guys know their sh*t - seriously. Totally, totally honest. My A/C Compressor had to be replaced and they called around to local shops to find a reasonable price, only to come up empty. The option was buying from Subaru direct for $950 but he was straightforward in letting me know that I could probably find it online for cheaper and they'd be happy to do the install. I ordered it, had it shipped overnight and saved $500. Might be nice if they could do this themselves, but I'm not complaining - they never, ever overbill on labor. I had a problem with a headlamp that they could've fleeced me for $150 to fix - as it turned out the lamp was fine and a wire just needed to be secured. Didn't cost me a dime. Oh, and the comment about the neighborhood? Whatever. My yuppie friends plant tulips directly across Kalorama on Ontario. I guess seeing some black folk going to the laundromat next door to the autoshop is a terrifying experience for some. read more

I've come here over the past three years for oil changes and repairs on my 17 year-old car. Honest assessments, fair prices, consistently courteous and helpful, and have never pushed me to do more than what's really necessary, in line with my "is it safe to drive?" requirement. In fact, the first time I dropped my car off, they determined the cause of a weird thumping noise, only to suggest that I take it to a different shop with welding tools, where the part could be fixed rather than replaced, for less than a tenth of the cost of a replacement. Bring your car early in the morning (to beat the rush since they don't take appointments and to make sure they can fit you in that day), describe the issue, they call you later in the day with an estimate, then call you again when it's done. They close on the early side, but if you have a spare key (or don't mind the car staying unlocked) and a zone 1 sticker, they'll take your billing info over the phone and street park your car to pick up at your convenience. I've taken my car to Auto Tech Service twice now. I have always been treated with the utmost courtesy and respect. As a young female it is especially important for me that I feel comfortable and heard when dealing with car service. Each time Carlos listened patiently and carefully to all my concerns/requests, took careful notes, and repeated what they would be investigating. When I get the call about the needed services everything is very clearly explained. They were upfront about costs and the immediate necessity of some services and I never felt pressured to purchase any service I did not want or need. They have never charged me for discovery. The second time I brought my car, the passenger side was flooding during rain showers. Auto Tech Services found the leak (a clogged drainage hose in my sun roof) cleaned it, tested the others areas I'd wanted looked at and charged me nothing for the help. Their new location on Mount Olivet is a little out of the way, but they gave me a complimentary ride to the metro when I dropped off my car and offered to pick me up there as well. These guys are great. I had an issue where my car was squeeling when it ran and the noise stopped when I pushed my brakes. Took it into the dealer, and told him I thouhgt it was the brakes, but after examining it, he said it wasn't my brakes. He said it was likely my bushings and that should fix the problem. He also listed about 15 other things I needed to get done including having the clutch replaced for $1500 otherwise I'd sonn find myself, "stranded on the side of the road". So I had the bushings replaces and it didn't help. Brought it to these guys for a second opinion and they said it was definitely the brakes. I also asked them to look at the clutch. They replaced the pads and turned the rotors and it was easily the cheapest brake job I've had anywhere. He also looked at the clutch and said I should probably replace it soon, but it's not really in danger of going out right now. Fixing brakes solved the problem. Mechanic said my clutch will only be ~$750 parts and labor when i want him to do it. read more

I originally took my car to Koons Arlington Toyota where they tried to charge me nearly $900 for services on my car, including several hundred dollars for a transmission flush ... which I had already paid to have done less than 9 months earlier. Long story short, I took my car to Auto Tech Services and Luis looked at all of the proposed repairs and demonstrated for me why they were unnecessary. He did so at no charge to me and they looked at it right away even though I did not have an appointment. In my experience, these guys are honest, friendly, fast. I went here earlier this week when the heat shield beneath the car came loose. The threads for the rivet were stripped so fixing the issue required new holes, which can only be drilled from the top of the apparatus. However, drilling holes from the top of anything under the car is practically impossible without removing parts - oh yes, very expensive! Instead, the ingenious mechanic at Auto Tech devised another way to reconnect the heat shield for only $50, all in. It's refreshing to know that these guys are not trying to squeeze every last penny out of you. Based on my experience with other shops and dealerships (I'm talking to you, Jim Coleman), I can only guess that if I had brought this problem to a different mechanic, I would've been out at least a few hundred dollars. And, they would've miraculously "discovered" issues with a dozen other things, thank God in heaven! For what it's worth, I went here a few years ago to have the radiator fixed and I've had no problems since. What more can you ask for? Also, to the reviewer who complained that there's not a metro near by, there is the Woodley Park/Zoo metro stop 0.9 miles away. As well, there are buses out the wazoo running that route. read more
