TLDR: This place is amazing, bring your car here. I am a huge car guy - and EXTREMELY picky about who touches my cars. I searched to find someone local that I could trust to take care of all of my cars (Tesla 3, Audi R8, Porsche GT3RS, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayman). THEY BLEW ME AWAY! The shop is absolutely gorgeous, the equipment is all new, but most of all, the people, are amazing. The owner, Rick, is a wizard. Shaun, Brandon, Emil, and the others are masters of their craft. I would not typically go out of my way, but these guys seriously deserve a round of applause. Even with cars under warranty and scheduled maintenance, I still bring the vehicles to AE because I trust them. They take care of my scheduled maintenance, my alignments, tire work, and any performance work (and also any repairs of course). There are so many shady mechanics out there. You will know the second that you walk in that this is NOT your stereotypical shop. It is more like a high-end, "botique" dealership workshop. With a lot of recommendations from my friends at MassBMW, I finally bit the bug with trying out this team and came out with zero regrets. I dropped my lowered Infiniti G37 (not a German car) for an alignment and tire mount/balance and James did a great job not only asking what I wanted, but also following up and explaining the work when I picked up the car as well. I noticed that the center caps were mounted "Porsche" style, meaning the center caps were lined up with the valve stems. This is something that many shops never do, and is a sign of work done with pride and care. The difference is in the details and in this case, the differences really shine through. In fact, I'll be bringing in my mom's W221 tomorrow just because I really trust their work. read more

This used to be our spot (7 years as a customer) but NEVER again. We would take our BMW and our Merc here and we always found it to be good and reasonably priced. HOWEVER, the owner sold the business in 2018 and the services required have not been accurate twice and the prices went through the roof. To change caliper and brakes they quotes $2000; they charged $200 to put missing bolts back into the wheel of our Merc and move it to their lot from 2 houses away. They then quoted over $3000 and said we need to replace the wheel due to scrape damage. Finally they used scare tactics and told us we were not allowed to drive our own car off the lot due to liability and said we had to tow the car when nothing was wrong with it. We did tow the car to another auto body shop in Lexington and they told us NOTHING was wrong with our wheel - its just cosmetic - and with the scrapes we can replace it if we want for $700. Im sad that we have seen Shaun many times and he has to deliver the pricing message and scare tactics for the owners. SO, after 2 shady dealings in 2 weeks we will never ever ever go there again. If you want to pay dealer prices GO TO THE DEALER. We are done with Auto Engineering. The new owners are doing a great job of ruining it's reputation that was built in 50 years. read more

If you are female and like being treated like an idiot, this place is for you. After five years of disrespect and fixing things that didn't need to be fixed while ignoring maintenance that did need to be done, I finally threw in the towel last month and will not ever return. I had my Audi in for an oil change and check in early summer and they told me I needed a very important and expensive job done and despite feeling uncomfortable with it, I told them to go ahead. $2,600 later, I was driving home from the shop when my tire light came on. I called and the front desk guy (Jim?) said not to worry, the tires in the back were getting a bit worn out but nothing to worry about. My car started sounding weird about a month later so I took it in on a Friday afternoon (not the best time for them, I concede) to check the tires. They told me the tires were shot and I should not drive the car. I asked them when they could put new ones on and they said 2 months from now since they are SO BUSY AND IMPORTANT. I said that would not work for me and what advice did they have? Nothing. Finally the front desk guy (Jim?) turned to another guy and said "She isn't being nice to me," in a sarcastic little voice. I asked the other guy where I should go to get new tires and he finally -- grudgingly -- said to go to Mal's in Lexington. Instead, I took it to another garage. They got me in right away, treated me very well, determined I also needed rear brakes (Auto Eng missed that one too). I was happy to give them my $3,000 and know that the job AE did for me a couple of months earlier was unnecessary. Maybe if you are male with deep pockets and a lot of bravado about your car, this place will be decent to you. I don't think they like women there AT ALL, and assume we are stupid about cars. If you want to get ripped off, just go the the dealer where there is some accountability. read more

My father has been bringing our family's BMWs here for over a decade. This includes his cars, my mother's cars, my cars and now my husband's cars. We have always loved the service here and trusted the workers implicitly. Plus, since my father is an engineer by trade, he really knows cars and really thought that these guys did great work. Until yesterday. He found out from the BMW dealership that some work was done on his vehicle at Auto Engineering that wasn't necessary. He went to Auto Engineering to talk about it - he is a loyal customer and he knows what he's talking about when it comes to cars. The guys at the front desk adamantly refused that they had done anything wrong - they wouldn't listen and they just kept denying that any extraneous work had been done. My father raised his voice - he admits that maybe he shouldn't have done this - BUT THEN someone appeared out of a side office and literally pushed my father out the door. And, since I haven't mentioned it yet, my father is EIGHTY YEARS OLD. What happened was not only completely unprofessional but immoral. Putting your hands on anyone, let alone a customer, let alone an eighty-year old customer, is just disgusting and wrong. They are lucky that my family is not calling the police, because we have every right to do so. No one should give their money to Auto Engineering. Getting good service on your Audi can be really difficult in the Boston area. This place does a good job and the people here treat you like a human being. The dealers (Brookline, Herb Chambers [formerly Pass & Weisz], Bernardi) charge an arm and a leg and treat you with disdain--as if they're doing you some big favor by taking your $95 per hour. As soon as your warranty is up, ditch the Audi dealer and head to an independent shop. Extra bonus: Auto Engineering has WIFI so bring your laptop! P.S. This is the old Autobahn East. I've been taking my bmw's here, since, like forever, thru several diff. owners & incarnations. The latest version, since they changed the name back to Auto Engineering, is the most professional indie bmw repair shop I've ever been to. The shop, & the customer area, is big, clean, & super-well organized. (one of those shops where you could apparently "eat off the floor", it's so clean). The prices have always been very fair for everything. I'm dinging it one star, because when it was Autobahn East several years ago, it was also good, but one time I couldn't pick up my car 'til the next morning, & they left it outside with the windows down, & it rained. The guy Chip called me the next morning, & started asking me if my car windows "leaked", trying to blame the wet carpet on the car. (If he had just said they left it outside with the windows down, oops, sorry, I would've been OK with it, but he was so insistent that my never leaking-before-or-since car windows were the problem that it seemed very suspicious). Even so, everything else I ever had done there went smoothly. Last visit, I asked them to check the car over (they don't charge for that). The mechanic himself called me, said the 2 drive belts needed to be replaced. This is on a 10 year-old car, so it made sense to me, & was exactly the kind of stuff I wanted them to find before it broke. $182 parts & labor, for 2 fat German-made "Serpentine" belts, that are buried so far down in the engine compartment that I could barely see them. Not sure if the-now Auto Engineering has diff. owners than Autobahn East? did--but they are super-professional......you gotta' have access to a place like this if you own an older audi or bmw..... read more

Called them a week later as I picked up a piece of steel in my tire. They said bring it right in - they swapped out the spare, ordered the tire and replaced in in two days. Been taking my Audi A6 for a few years now. They have a dedicated Audi tech. That is a big relief. The indies are being run out by the manufacturers who try to put a lock on specialized equipment. It's expensive to fix an Audi. They're happy to used OEM or re marketed OEM materials. Shop rate is considerably lower than dealers. Had a problem which required certain type of expensive Audi jig to replace it. Well, they bit the bullet and bought the piece. No extra charge to me. They always do things right. They have all the right equipment. My car was used when I got it, and the moon roof leaked. They cleaned the drain and charged me next to nothing. They've done the routine maintenance on it, as well as a few fixes here and there. When I whacked my mirror and when to have it replaced, they advised just snapping it back together, with a bottom piece broken off. Happy about that, you can't even see the break. I've no problem with their drop off service, just wish they had a pickup service after hours. read more

Went in to have some bushings changed, had three different prices quoted for labor (paid the middle one) over 24 hours. Brought my own part because I got it significantly cheaper online. How does a repair shop not have good prices on parts?! Regardless they ended up suckering me into more work to the tune of $500 more (which wasn't all the recommended additional charges) . Me being a DIYer, it wasn't worth close to that in cost but I had no time/desire to do the specified work so I got it done. They gave me a loaner which is always a bonus. Good prices, solid work but know what you need done. If you aren't a DIYer then great place to go, if you are, do what you can on your own and bring the rest to them. Like every place you go they are going to try and sell you more than you originally wanted (it is a business after all) but some you need and some you don't. read more

I went here on a recommendation from a friend the first time simply to buy some VW coolant for my Audi, and to check the place out. Very clean, very professional looking shop. They comp'd me the tiny bit of coolant I needed to top off the reservoir, and even pulled a check-engine light I had, free of charge. I figured I'd found my new repair shop. I brought my car in for A/C repair, and they did a quick leak check, and recharged the system, including a fluorescent dye. This cost a tremendous amount of money: $150 for about 25 minutes of work. I asked if they charged in half-hour units, and they indicated that they did, but my bill didn't reflect it. They told me to come back if I had any more problems. Well, a week later, the system had discharged again. I then had the pleasure of paying ANOTHER $100 for a tech to hold a UV light to my A/C system for 15 minutes. Apparently, the half-hour unit thing was incorrect. They told me I needed a new condensor, and it would cost $800, as it was a several-hour job, requiring the front-end to be removed. I told them I'd get back to them, deciding I'd do the job myself. I brought the car to a garage of a mechanic friend of mine in RI (the reason I didn't go to him first--quite a drive). He pulled the condensor out in 15 minutes, WITHOUT removing the front-end (I watched, it was quite straightforward), and took the UV light to it. There were NO leaks. Not a one. What there were, however, were yellow spraypaint spots, which the techs at Auto Engineering, I can only assume, thought were spots of the dye they'd injected. Turns out that while the car was having front-end work done years ago, the condensor was hung on a wall for safe-keeping, and had caught some yellow spraypaint overspray. My buddy then checked the system more thoroughly, finding a leak in the line, as well as a faulty receiver/dryer. He replaced those, recharged the system, and now it works fine, WITH the old condensor in. Long story short: Had I listened to these guys, I'd have been out $800 for an hour job, and STILL had no A/C. I have no doubt this would have required several more very costly diagnostics. I didn't give one star because these guys seem really nice and honest (as the rest of these reviews indicate). But the idea that they could have so carelessly misdiagnosed a problem and set me back $800--AFTER charging me $250 total for a laughably small amount of work--indicates to me a lack of concern for my wallet. I feel like $100 an hour is enough to at least warrant a double-check before diagnosing. I'm not sure about their other clientele, but I certainly can't afford to waste that kind of cash, and I expect my mechanic to respect that. read more

I just had my first service performed at a highly recommended Auto Engineering as my warranty has expired on my Porsche 911. My experience was nothing short of greatness. I was greeted with professionalism each time I entered the building. Justin communicated what was needed for my car and took time to clearly explain issues to me. So, these guys are authorized Lexus service providers... I had a rattling noise in my car. These guys put clamps on heat shield, admitted it didn't fix the problem, but still charged me $200 for it. They offer to replace catalytic converter (which we all know cost $1.5K+). I say no, because it is a BS - I don't even have a CE light on! They also say I need rear brakes, with estimate of $650+. Another car shop (Abe's at Fresh Pond) finds out that my exhaust was leaking - they replace gaskets, rusted exhaust bolts and rusted shield, weld it, for a total of $225. They also change just pads ('cause disks are in perfect condition) for another $200. And all this done way past 5pm. What can I say after that? Auto Engineering of Lexington is a ripoff. Overpriced and incompetent. Even if you don't care about costs, chance is they are not good enough to fix a simple problem. In my case, replacing a catalytic converter would not resolve the issue and I can only imagine how their stories would develop in a course of fixing my simple problem. I would not recommend Auto Engineering of Lexington for anything other than a regular oil change, but again, other guys around the block can do the same for a fair money. read more

This review is more of a thank you. I was having lunch in my car on a Friday in Lexington listening to the radio. 20 mins later my battery was dead!! And my cell was dead!! I began looking for the address where I was located to call AAA when i came upon this establishment. I walked in and inquired if they do battery jumps. An employee named Sean came right out from the service area and told me they don't. Sean then said he would he would be happy to help out with a jump!!!! I was parked about 1/4 mile away and Sean drove us to my car, jumped it and would NOT take a tip!! WOW!! I will definitely be taking my vehicle there for any future service. It is about 20 miles from my house but I will be glad to know my vehicle is in great hands. The people in and around the Lexington area should be very proud to have such a great company among them. Had high hopes for this auto shop. Was incredibly disappointed. Brought my Boxster in for service. My clamshell was not moving, and thought perhaps the black "hydraulic" pushrods are either damaged or have popped off the V-Levers, or more likely, the outer sheaths of your drive cables have stretched. I also thought a fuse may have been blown. After explaining this, I get call stating that indeed the pushrods were 'broken' and the cables were stretched in addition to needing timing on the top. The Quote...a bit too much for the amount of time and cost of parts. I decided I would take the car back. No problem at all. I appreciated the time. The response when I said I would decline service and pick up the car: "It's in pieces and needs to be put back together" Me: "what is in pieces?" Auto: "The panels and parts" Me: "What? I'm coming by to pick it up" Auto: "we don't have anyone here right now and might have to get it back to you tomorrow" (it's 12;00 pm). You also owe for the diagnostic Me; "Tomorrow? We had an appointment for today and I don't want work done and you won't have it ready until tomorrow? I would like to pick it up today. How much'? Auto: $300. 2.5 hours of diagnostic me: $300? For what? To tell me exactly what I told you? Auto: "That's 'as is' - we have not put it back together yet, so that will be another hour." me: So, $400 for a diagnostic? what? For a common problem that I already told you about? I am coming down to the shop now. I went to the Porsche dealership, explained the initial issue and their diagnostic (according to their diagnostic charts) would have been 1- 1.5 hours. A total of $150.00. I would have gotten better service and half the price from the Porsche dealership. This is a common issue amongst Boxster's. While I have NO problem paying for good service and fully understand that shops need to charge and make money, I do not believe in padding the hours and pricing. When I expressed this, he said nothing and handed me my bill. Saddened by this experience. read more

James Hart, the BMW specialist, is literally that rare find called Mechanical Genius. If you'd like to find out why, read my story below. If you don't have time or don't like to read, simply take my word for it and take your BMW to James before you get fleeced and frightened by anyone else. Period. I have a 1986 535i (E28) BMW that I drove to Boston all the way from Los Angeles (northern route). I had the car checked out by the mechanic who had been taking care of it for many years - but just before I left LA, it randomly did not start one morning. When I called. the LA mechanic non-chalantly told me to wait 5 minutes and try again. It worked, but when I talked to him about what might be wrong, he hemmed and hawed and postured and postulated and basically wound up a big ball of really really scary, big-ticket stuff that "it might be" and told me best to leave well enough alone. In other words, he didn't feel like dealing with it. I called another LA mechanic who I'd gone to before who was also an older BMW specialist, and he too ran me a litany of potentially serious problems. I needed to get to Boston and winter was fast approaching. I hit the road with a lot of determination and a fair amount of worry, and promptly ended up spending 2 days in Grand Junction, Colorado while a wonderfully nice shop (called Integrity) tried to find the problem but came up empty handed. The car always started for them and since the AAA guy showed me how to push-start it, I decided to press on and eastward. By the time I arrived in the Boston area, the engine crank time was getting longer and longer, I had push-started it at least once, and I was sweating bullets every time I turned the key. So I hit the internet and started combing all the E28 boards I could find. Somehow, all the random feedback about Auto Engineering seemed to resonate with the most positivism and promise. When the engine blessedly turned over the first Monday after I arrived, I drove to Lexington and presented myself on their doorstep. I felt welcomed by everyone almost immediately. Of course there was some mild shock at the age of the car and the fact that we had made it all the way from California, but James read my "new-in-town" SOS distress signal and agreed to take the car in and check it out while I waited. Less than an hour later, James told me I was all set. He said there was a fair amount of age-related grime and build up which was probably interfering with the fuel-injected start mechanism. He used a strong chemical called "sea foam" to give the car the equivalent of what sounded like a colonic. When he handed me the keys, he had that air of confidence you could literally feel. The car has started up immediately every time, ever since. No doom, no gloom, no mechanical nightmare. Just a bit too much build-up on some contact points. James also told me the fan shroud was badly bent and in danger of fouling the fan and damaging the adjacent hoses. So he found a new shroud within a few days and installed that, as well. As the weather turned cold and Boston was clobbered by a super early nor'easter snowstorm, the car was clearly not happy. When I kept smelling gasoline I took a chance and drove out to Lexington again - this time on a Saturday morning. James happened to be there and even though he was busy and they were closing early, he opened the hood, took two sniffs and pinpointed the problem immediately. This time I needed to leave the car till he could get to it on Monday. There was no one I could call to come and pick me up and I didn't have any cash on me. James reached in his pocket and gave me his own "Charlie Card" public transit card which had more than enough bus and subway credit to get me back to Somerville where I was staying. Talk about above and beyond. When is the last time your mechanic was both a genius and a Good Samaritan? My former boss in LA who is and always has been the penultimate surfer dude gifted the car to me. So it spent a lot of time at the beach and has a sweet, sun-bleached, sandblasted 'patina'. In other words the original bronze paint finish is a thing of the past. But it looks really cool with its black Thule roof racks, and it is running beautifully now. Since I'm not a mechanic, and my beloved E28 and I are clearly not in southern California anymore (where classics thrive and are plentiful), I am looking to find it a good home where it will be loved, garaged, pampered and taken to the beach in the summer. A big move is one of the most challenging passages in life, and I did this one essentially alone. I will never forget the hand of expertise and friendship extended by Auto Engineering's James Hart, certified Mechanical Genius. read more

I have never written a review before but I feel like this place warrents one. So I own an Audi (2002) and had a heater core burst. I normally like working on my own cars, but as I did my research found out I had to take apart the entire dash - a labor project over over 10 hrs ... and that was if I knew what I was doing!! So I shopped around... I live in J.P. and have been to the Audi dealership before (big mistake) ... they quoted me at $2000. I also contact two audi "specialist" ... one was busy for the next 1.5 weeks and the other quoted me at $1200 which actually sounded like a fair price. Well, I called auto engineer and the woman on the phone quoted me at $500-600 ... At first I thought she had taken the wrong info ... She kept saying she knew the job and they had just "downgraded" it to 3.5-4 hrs labor. I have never been so impressed! They were very professional and took great care of the car! A dependable - Audi, Mercedes Benz and BMW- service company staffed with excellent technicians. After the local Audi dealer failed to identify and remedy suspension noise on my 2015 A15 after several visits ( car was still under warranty), I went to Auto Engineering. They quickly identified the two very visible sources of the problem ( missing rattle clip on front calipers ) and a leaky rear shock absorber. For very longtime customers of the original Auto Engineering, in Lexington, the current company occupies the same building and uses the same company name as the original company, but in other ways is totally unrelated to the original company and its management and ownership, though advertising makes it seem like one continuous company. The original company was a new car dealership for the sometimes concurrently offered Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, Porsche, and Aston Martin, and occasionally bought special brands like Cobra 427, Ford GT, and Ferrari for a few of their local customers. I had 2000 BMW that was in a decent condition. Lately, the coolant light had been going on and off. Although it had not caused any problems, I decided to take the car to Auto Engineering to have them check it out. After checking out the car, they gave me a long list of the things that needed to be repaired. Out of that long list, the only thing related to the cooling system was the thermostat housing. Their price for replacing the thermostat housing was $335 (I actually called the dealer. The BMW dealer only charges $270 for the same work). Since the car was already in the shop I decided to have them do it at the higher price. After picking up the car from the shop, I did very little driving on the first day. Then on the next day, I went to a local store. On the way back, the coolant light went back on and engine temperature was high. I called in the next day and had the car towed in to the shop. They checked it out and told me what they did on the thermostat housing was all right - it was the expansion tank that had failed. They adamantly denied that they had done anything wrong. Their excuse was the car is 12 years old and anything can fail. Even the car is 12 years old, the expansion tank can not fail just one day after it came out of the shop. Besides, if the expansion tank was going to fail in one day, why it is not on the long list of things that they gave me? I was arguing with them and they are rude and unreasonable. He insisted that I pay for the expansion tank even though the car was already not drivable. My car was fine before it went in the shop, now it is completely worthless. My wife's engine light came on, so she took it to her usual place for service. They informed us that the repair would be a little over $1000 to replace the failing part (the part made up $700 of the estimate). When I did a quick google search for the part, I found numerous bosch parts for around $250. I had taken my car to Auto Engineering before and was happy with both the service and the costs so I gave them a call. They gave me an estimate to make the repair for $400 less, so it was a no brainer. After I received the car back, the engine light came back on and as it turns out it was the same part failing. The mechanic came out to speak to me about why it may have failed and Auto Engineering replaced the part again for free without me having to make a stink about it. While it's hard for me to give anybody a 5 star rating, I have to say the service I received was as good as it gets. I got a qualified and trained mechanic to fix my car for a reasonable price and when something went wrong they took care of it. read more
