I have brought two cars to Hometown Garage over the years. Their courtesy, timeliness and overall service has always been excellent.

Crazy... waited for about 20 min just to ask a question. Guy inside playing on his phone, not really paying attention; He came back out towards where I was, didn't even acknowledge I was there; Person in the garage saw me and rolled his eyes... I was also in full uniform, so, I would say they probably don't like or are NOT military friendly. I just wanted a state inspection. read more

Dropped off my car here last night to have it checked for any maintenance items. A few things that were notable about my experience...I was able to reserve an appointment online and received a confirmation quickly. I was updated by text when the car was checked in, looked over and ready for pickup. I really appreciate when business take the time to embrace Information Age outside of just a basic website. What was most awesome is that my car did not need anything addressed. I was not pushed do buy anything and I was not charged for the look over. To kick things off, I was sent a digital document explaining all the items that were checked in detail. So in short, this place has a great staff that is communicative and trust worthy. read more

I used to go to this places several times for repairs. I went their today as I tried to an appointment. The office door was closed and you had to press a bell to get someone's attention. A office lady came out to answer the bell. I had to hold the door while we talk. I was told I can't getting in unless I need pick something up. They used to have shuttle service when you dropped you car for service. Now I had to arrange someone to give you a ride home. I felt they do not care their customers as it claimed to put people first. So I bring my business in other shops as it appears it doesn't want you business. read more

A good news, bad news story for Hometown Garage. The bad news, their repaired component failed after about 2 months and I was hundreds of miles away for quite a while, so I had it fixed by a new car dealer ; that repair has lasted longer. Apparently the original failure resulted from an electrical drain in another part of the system. The good news for Hometown Garage's reputation, the dealer probably found the other problem as a result of HG's work; and the dealer's charge for the part of the job that Hometown Garage completed was double what I had paid. Also, I'm confident that if I (in my opinion, unjustifiably) complained to HG, they'd try to work something out, and if I'd been geographically able to take it back that they would have made it good. I still feel that HG gives five star service. read more

I left LFC for Hometown Garage. They are always honest, the price is reasonable. When there was a exhaust leak, instead of fixing it and charging me a lot of money, Herb told me to take my car to Lou's custom exhaust and repair since it's much cheaper, which I gladly did. One time, they over charged me like $30. They called me to let me know it, and offered a refund. I refused the refund so they credited me for next time. When I was talking about my car not passing the inspection due to really unreasonable gas station's claim (I fixed everything the first inspection's failures fixed up, and went back and they started telling me something else), after fixing the car second time at Hometown, after listening to my story, Herb took money out from the register, gave it to a young guy there, told them to take my car to an inspection. The guy came back with the new inspection sticker. Herb didn't bother to take money from me upfront. I think he was just mad. I of course repaid the inspection fee afterward. I was grateful that they cared me and my car. They have coffee, wifi and shuttle. What more do you want? read more

Have had mixed to poor experiences with so many mechanics in the area - things done incorrectly, parts of my car lost (yep, lost), being charged for services not done... thanks to the reviews online I'd been looking for an opportunity to checkout Hometown Garage. The first 2 times I contacted Herb he referred me to other shops because HG didn't do the work I needed. I finally had service that they could take care of recently and had a great experience. Easy to schedule an appt, friendly and fast service, and Herb showed me exactly what was up with my car. He sent me on my way with some advice after a fairly short wait, and I'll certainly go back again. read more

I first heard about Hometown Garage when I was going for my 60,000 mile service. After being transferred to three different people, my Ford dealership told me that this would cost $600 before parts, and it would take 3-4 hours. The people I talked to were also not too friendly, and treated me like I was bothering them. I took it to Hometown Garage, talked to one person, and it cost 1/3 the price of the dealership! The service also only took 90 minutes, leaving me with plenty of free time for the day. The people at Hometown Garage also asked if I had any questions, and took time to make sure I was satisfied. I had a rusty and burst brake crossover pipe on my old Cadillac. HTG quoted me $750 to replace, refill and bleed the brake system. The reason it is so high, according to them, is because the caliper nipples were hard to open. I ended up had it fixed at a nearby Lexington gas station for $175. This is in Aug. 2014. read more

Posting this now, after waiting to see how I felt after time passed. This review (written below) dates back to Aug 2013, and feeling this is warranted now Oct 18, 2013. I really prefer to leave positive reviews but feel this is an accurate description of my experience. Feeling really bad about this auto shop. Initially these guys were great, offering reasonable prices, and actually seemed to try to help the consumer. But today, after trusting them (based on past experience), and then paying extra $$ to have my car towed to their garage.....and then to discover the price of repairs of $695! Well did I check the price with other shops? Yes. And these are the prices given for a 2009 Camry thermostat, water pump and serpentine belt....$350-400. Why is their price $695? Don't know ... Due to the discrepancy and the overall faith I had in these guys, called 3 shops for price comparison. Do you know what? Other shops prices are as follows---1) 'Between $350-400 (Dorchester MA) 2) $375 (Hudson MA) 3) $460 (Lexington MA). What would you do???? From $695 quoted? A no brainer. I don't care how you slice it, I feel like they are ripping me off, and that just goes to show they will rip you off too, once they believe they have earned your business. FIrst, let me say that Herb the owner is above board in every possible way. But his relatively new? associate Gary is geared for profit and will always charge and charges are high. When I went to get my car today, and have it towed off their lot and asked what I owed them, Herb (really great guy) said 'nothing'. Well I had already talked with Gary and he had said $31.86 was the price I owed for checking my car. That was fair enough and I told Herb I wanted to pay them. I felt bad for not doing business with them after I had had good experiences in the past. But what I am saying here is 'Herb is great" and he is very customer service driven. Gary is probably great too, but it's been my personal experience that when dealing with Gary, you will pay More. Gary is not giving anything without charging and I am pretty sure profit margins are up due to Gary;s pricing. I have seen it in the past, too when someone showed up at the counter questioning the pricing, and Gary had overcharged the person. Their moto 'high tech service....with'old time values' doesn't really apply since the costs of their services does not really equate to 'old time values'. I am both happy and sad to report that I took my car (via tow truck) to another shop and I saved $222 total on the repairs. It's unfortunate to say that Hometown Garage are now well established, have a good reputation, but that doesn't mean the prices should escalate such that they are way out of line. I feel bummed about this, as I had trusted them and thought I had found a good auto repair shop, and they let me down, being relentless, saying their guys are 'ASE certified' and they guarantee for 24 months blah blah blah. I like to see the owners of the shop get their hands dirty, not just build in excessive costs so they can take the cream off the top of their excessive charges. Other auto mechanics are also ASE certified and do not charge as much. read more

OK this is a followup on my previous review. Why lowered the rating: the price. I went back to get a synthetic oil change and tire patching this morning. I remembered last time that they told me the synthetic oil change was a little more than 60 bucks. Today they gave me a quote of 86 bucks (maybe a few bucks more or less) for synthetic oil change and 46 bucks for patching the tire. When I asked about why the price change for oil change, they told me that the 60 bucks quote may be for non-synthetic oil change, which apparently cost about 55 dollars from the system they have. I was shocked about the price (and the inconsistent quote) and walked away. Later I quoted from my Lexus dealer and it was 62 bucks for synthetic oil change and 25 for tire patching. And you can guess where I am taking my car to for this one. read more

This is a throwaway account for numerous reasons, however I am compelled to write a review about this business. I had my car towed there this morning for grinding brakes. Although they told me exactly what was wrong with my car and also told me they have a 3 year warranty, and they use the best quality parts, the price was a little higher than I could afford at the moment. My go to shop said they could not get me in until next week. I have a small child and of course safety is first and I could not wait that long. After the quote from hometown, I called my go to and they were able to squeeze me in today. I called hometown and spoke to Ryan explaining the circumstances. He was more than understanding. Being in the service industry, hospitality means a lot to me. You won't find better here. I will definitely be using their services in the future. They seem very reliable and competent in what they do, and seem to really care about their clients. They also did not charge me a diagnostic fee which I am very grateful for considering I did not use them. Sorry I did not use your services today, but thank you for not just trying to keep me there to make a dollar. I will definitely use you in the future!! read more

I got my rear brakes replaced here back in December, and I thought everything went smoothly. They told me I'd have to replace my front brakes in ~3000 miles. Fast forward to now. My front wheels started squealing yesterday, and it had been about 2800 miles since December so I was expecting to have to replace them soon. What was weird was that they would squeal even when I wasn't braking, which doesn't make sense. I took it to a local shop, and turns out my front left and rear right calipers were ceased (stuck to the rotor). This happened because only my rear brakes were replaced, so the difference in brake pad thickness applied uneven pressure between the front and back (brakes operate in an x formation - left back and front right are paired, vice versa). They also didn't service my calipers, which should be standard as part of any brake job. Not only was my front brake pad completely worn down, but so was one of the rear ones which was brand new. Now I have to get all my brakes replaced, and if the calipers can't be torched so that they're not ceased anymore, I have to get those too. If these guys had just done a proper job from the beginning, I wouldn't be in this situation. Unbelievable. read more

My past dealings with Hometown Garage left me with an impression that they were well run and efficient. However, all this expertise and professionality comes at a price. Those who say they charge less than a dealer are telling the truth. It's just that a dealership service department charges more than God (who's actually intimidated by car dealers). For example, someone earlier said Hometown charged them $86 for an oil change and $46 for "patching" (probably meant plugging) a tire. If a dealership charges roughly 1/3 more (and the rumors about God are true), that makes the price of a dealer-done oil change an astronomical $114. This is all very discouraging, until you consider that a local gas station will charge you $27 and $10, for an oil change and a patched tire, accordingly. read more

Much more expensive then in the past. I went through a pre-vehicle inspection. It used to be a little more reasonable in prices in general. The work was ok. Some things were explained and some not. Also, I didnt find out today till after the car was expensive that it will need about $1,000.00+ of fixes. This is def something I should have discussed with the cerrified dealership on the day of purchase and information hometown garage should have given me. read more

My car had a leak in the tire, simple repair. I have been to many garages over my life and never have I been treated with such respect. There was not one moment where I was wondering if they were working on my car or if they had even started. They checked in with me on a regular basis to give me updates, come to find out I had three leaks in my wheel none of which were the tire. I have been going to Hometown for several years now, each and every service interaction has been great. They are very thorough when inspecting your vehicle during any repairs. Several months ago I had gotten an oil change and was made aware that my battery (6 years old) was going to be needing replacing in the near future. Well, during this Covid19 situation I hadn't driven my car in almost 4 weeks. Well that did it, I was starting it up or I should say trying to start it up, nothing totally dead. Having other cars in the driveway I wasn't in dire need of a quick repair. I called the shop and spoke with Ryan. I told him my battery was dead and even after I tried to give it up jump, nothing. I had made him aware that the shop told me some time back that the battery was on it's way out, he also looked at my file and said that he saw it noted. Since there was no further need for diagnosis knowing that it wasn't the alternator or anything else. It had to be just the battery. With the Covid19 situation, the car not taking a jump and the shop being somewhat slower he sent out a tech to change my battery within 40 mins of my call. Now, I don't believe the shop typically or ever does house calls (who does) but I was extremely fortunate to get mine replaced from the comfort of my home with no interaction other than a phone call. Meng the tech wiped down my door handles, steering wheel, shifter. That's customer service and just another reason why I continue to take all my cars there with complete confidence in all they do. read more

Honest, competent garage -- what else ya need? Example -- my brakes were making noise and they could easily have sold me new pads and rotors for $400+. But they said it was just some rust, and if I could tolerate the noise, I should wait until things really did wear out. Honesty like that is hard to come by in the car repair business. My only regret is that they used to be within walking distance of my home, but had to move a few miles away because of a nasty landlord. But they have a terrific shuttle service with a lovely gentleman driver who will take you most anywhere in the area on your own personal schedule. And when he's not shuttling, he comes into the waiting room and offers you coffee! read more

I've been going to hometown garage for years, and have ALWAYS received the best service from knowledgeable technicians. The thing that strikes me as most important is their honesty-they never do anything that isn't necessary, nor do they overcharge. I have brought every used car I was interested in buying to them before final purchase. And let me say, they rejected several Toyotas I brought to them - specified as not a good choice, despite Toyota's certified used car guarantee. I would never take my car anyplace else. And I should say MANY of my friends go there regularly and feel the same way I do. Truly exceptional. I could not possibly give them a better review-they should get 10 stars. By the way, they are doing an AMAZING job providing exceptional service during this pandemic. They actually picked up my car at work, fixed it, and put it right back where I left it, all sanitized, with updates about the car's service and EASY payment on the phone. I've been bringing my cars here for about a year now and they never fail to impress. The level of integrity is unquestionable. I brought my car in because I thought I needed new tires. The mechanic measured the tires and told me I could easily make it to winter with my current tires. I've been taking my cars to this shop for 15 years. These guys are the absolute best. Super trustworthy, willing to explain anything, never any pressure, and friendly. They're well organized too and give you clear itemized receipts with notes so you know what they did and what (if anything) you should keep an eye on. They've done tires, shocks, some exhaust repairs, and regular oil changes for me and I keep going there even though it's not all that near anymore. I recommend them to anyone. read more
