Rick, the owner, answered the phone. He was very helpful and arrenged to have somone come out to the house. He found that the valve in my shower was bad, and recomended replacing the valve with an updated one (mine was 30 years old). They came and efficiently had the valve and other material changed out. He sent Glenn who quickly assessed the issue - our 1953 galvanized pipes and particularly the p-trap were most likely corroded. He returned with an assistant the following week and cut our the pipes replacing them with PVC. Sure enough the p-trap was full of hardened, black gunk. Will definitely use them again. read more

Upon noticing a drip adjacent to an exterior door I called upon Rick for some assistance. He promptly sent the very capable Len over to analyze the situation. This leak apparently stemmed from the February freeze at a weak point where the copper pipe leading to an outdoor spigot which had been krimped when the house was built over 40 years ago had been weakened by the freeze. Len admitted that this would be a challenge but within an hour and a quarter he had soldered in a new section and corrected the problem. Rick himself picked up when I called and offered his valuable time and opinion even when he couldn't come out. He sounded like an honest and reasonable guy and gave us options as to how to approach the problem (newly built house with a clog less than a year in). He even gave referrals to other trusted plumbers that could help us sooner and with different tools. They definitely sound like they know their stuff and their competition. He was extremely friendly and patient with my barrage of questions, lol. I would definitely give Rick a call if you have a clog, he will listen to you and help you through it even if he himself can't get to you in time. How awesome is that? read more

I am updating this review: After hours spend on the phone with the City of Austin and the TX Board of Plumbing Examiners, I got to the bottom of the inspection delay. The Examiners had failed to update Joe Caldwell's insurance information for months, which meant the city could not inspect his work. I tracked down someone who tracked down the head of the Insurance division at the Examiners, the insurance was updated, inspection scheduled, and we passed. I still fault APB for not being responsive to our questions about this inspection for nearly a year, but the core of the problem was the delay at the state level -- not the plumber's fault and he has been very responsive since. I would recommend APB for routine work, not for something big like a hot water heater changeout and do thank them for being far more responsive now. Side note -- progress began w/my initial Yelp review, so there we are. Initial Review: Rick was our plumber for years and was fine with basics, responsive and easy to work with. The trouble came last year when we hired ABP to replace our electric hot water heater. The installation was a mess from the start as it quickly became clear that the crew didn't know what they were doing and left us without hot water over a weekend when they screwed up the job the first time and then still took repeat visits to get it right. Rick offered a partial refund which we appreciated but hadn't ask for - and then never made good on it anyway. In the middle of all this Rick retired, left the business to Joe, who months later we are still chasing to schedule the inspection with the city, important to have for resale. We were loyal customers for years and have been utterly flabbergasted by the lack of professionalism. Do not hire these guys. read more

We've been using Austin's Best Plumbing for the last few years for various jobs and each and every time we've been more than happy with Rick's service and very reasonable rates. Two days ago the hot water heater stopped working and Rick and Co. were able to come out the same day to see if the thing could be salvaged. (I always appreciate Rick's willingness to try and repair items if at all possible). A long time leak had left it rusted out but they were able to get a new one and install it the very next day. This involved no small amount of wrangling on their part and we're endlessly appreciative of them bending over backwards to help us out. Since it was Saturday, Rick was not available but I can tell you that Glenn and Joe do wonderful work. They arrived on time and were willing to answer all of our questions. I called Rick at Austin's Best Plumbing when my 9 year old hot water heater died. I called a total of 7 plumbers asking if it could be repaired. Rick was the ONLY plumber who said YES! My first water heater lasted 32 years so I assumed this was a repair issue. I received 3 estimates for new installations averaging $1200-1400. When Rick came to my home the next day, he took one look at the heater and said this can definitely be repaired. He replaced both of the heating elements and was done in less than an hour. It was clear to me that Rick is an exceptional man. He was kind, friendly, patient, professional, and explained everything he was doing. He was right on time, polite, and got quickly to work. When he finished the install, he asked what else he could help with and took care of 2 other minor plumbing issues in about 10 minutes. I'd been struggling with a leaky toilet for several weeks, and after trying to fix it myself and having a different plumber visit my home and replace the entire fill valve and flapper set, I ended up with a massive water bill as a result of the leak. I called several plumbers, left messages, and never received a return call. Finally, I found Rick and I'm so grateful that I did. First, he told me he didn't "want to come all the way out there and charge you $100 if you can fix it yourself," so he walked me through a few trouble shooting exercises. Unfortunately, my situation was extremely difficult to solve but they were always honest, responsive, and upfront about their reasonable prices. I have a condo that has always had lots of problems. I've never had any other contractor that continued to be so helpful when things went wrong. A lot of other people I've worked with kind of disappear when things get hard--particularly if they've already been paid. This is not at all the case with Austin's Best Plumbing. Not only did Joe, Glenn and Rick always return my calls in a very timely manner, they also called me twice after the job was totally finished just to make sure everything was still working correctly. No matter what happened, I felt like they were on my team, and when things aren't going right, having trusted allies makes all the difference in the world.
