I used this company 20 years ago and had a really bad experience with them. Told myself I would never use them again. I'm building a backyard pergola and decided (god knows why) to try them again. Do NOT use this business if you want the product you order and pay for upfront to get delivered and able to be picked up before six plus weeks. My husband used this business while building a very large deck. The manager/ owner ? has horrible customer service, lies and states your order which was always payed for first will be in " tomorrow " or " on the next truck " Or the order would be here "Friday " always excuses and lies. We used AWD to build our deck. They were fine when building the deck. But now, the deck is uneven and dangerous to walk on. It is obvious that they did not use the correct support system for the deck. Now AWD will not respond to any inquiry. We have tried to give them every chance to correct the problem. Like the other reviewer, go somewhere else. Especially if you're not a contractor. They say wholesale to the public, but the reality is that you can often find better quality lumber and better prices at other places (not necessarily HD or Lowes). Places such as McCoys or Eastside lumber or direct from the mills in Cedar Creek or Bastrop. I've been using them for years because of convenience, but they have gone downhill in terms of customer service and supply. The last two times I've needed lap-and-gap cedar, they didn't have any in stock (common building material). So they special order it for me (at extra cost). In BOTH cases there was an issue. Turns out they cut it wrong and my corners weren't matching up. I had already cut all my pieces when I realized it and of course they wouldn't do anything to fix the error. The last order was a small order of 8 pieces of 16 foot lap/gap. Horrible quality!!! Of course it's all bundled up with the two best pieces on top so that you can't see how mangled some of the other boards are until you get it home and unbundle it. Of course there are no returns because it's special order. A third of it had to be culled out because it was splintered or buggered up. Also if you special order something, they won't call you to tell you its in. Meanwhile you're sitting around waiting and it's sitting in their yard the whole time. Last time I stopped by and there it was. And then the guy had to audacity to tell me "I was lucky that I picked it up, they were about to put it back into stock and sell it." From now on I'll be buying all of my cedar wood from McCoys. It's 10 more minutes to drive there, but it'll worth it in quality. read more

Looks like Austin Wholesale Decking has been paying attention to the Yelp reviews. Maybe I lucked out, but I had a really attentive employee when I visited. It was obvious that this guy was new, but he knew lumber and spent 20 minutes with me in the freezing rain explaining my various options for finishing my fence project. I've mostly been a metal worker up to this point, and I don't really know what I'm doing with woodworking. This fella helped me select boards, and even helped me load everything when we were all done. Austin Wholesale Decking came recommended to me by a carpenter friend. Their selection is good, though he warned me that they don't try and compete on price. For me, it was worth it simply because the location is so convenient. Your experience may be highly dependent on who helps you. When I first walked in, a salty looking older employee was eyeballing me and answered my first few questions with grunts. He seemed more intent on watching the Superbowl replay airing behind me than answering my questions. Austin Wholesale bid, supplied and oversaw a deck build for our house. They did an excellent job and the price was great. They were very helpful when we had to make changes during the project. Their sub-contractor was "Five Star Deck & Patio" out of San Antonio, not to be confused with "Five Star Fence and Deck" (which is listed in Austin). The former is excellent and the other has a not-so-good reputation. They did a great job for us. I have since purchased other products from AWDS and they were extremely helpful and fair. Dennis, in particular, went over the top to provide me with extra help and advice about the projects. read more

The worse place in town to do business. They let you order and pay but you never see the decking. Always an excuse. Yes the decking is here. No is not. Yes it is. Come get it. THE guy is out to lunch. Guy calls, "I'm here. You go down there. No, he's not here. They call him. "Yes your order is here. Hand the phone the man at desk." Hand the phone to him. He hang it up. After less than six months, our newly installed Ipe deck from Austin Wholesale / Five Star started failing. Numerous boards are warping, boards are pulling up and becoming unfastened, and numerous boards are cupping. Austin Wholesale/Fivestar does not return phone calls, left us on hold for 30 minutes numerous times, and refuses to do anything to address the issue. They even sent us to a sales rep who is no longer with the company to try to resolve the issue with him. At this point, the deck will almost certainly need to be replaced and we will be out over $10,000. read more

These guys are a joke, like the other reviews on here say, their customer service is probably the worst I've experienced in years. I called them on the phone to ask if they had a specific brand and color of stain for garapa wood. He said yes, and was very short and rude in answering a few other questions I had. I should have known it was gonna be all bad after that, but I needed the stain for a client. So, I drove an hour to get it, and when I entered no one greeted me, so I just walked around a bit confused. When someone finally decided to greet me, the first thing he told me was where to stand. Wow! There's absolutely no way of knowing what is the customer side and what is the employee side, if it was such a big deal they should place a sign to let you know. I told him I had called for the stain, he went to a shed out back to grab it, and I stepped outside to watch him get it. He walked up with the cans, and instead of handing them to me or taking then inside to the register he just put them on the ground outside. Another wow! So, I walked over and picked them up, and of course he hadn't really listened to me on the phone, so they weren't the actual color I needed. He couldn't have cared less, and his general attitude was so rude it was mind blowing. Avoid this place at all costs! read more

I very rarely trouble myself to write bad reviews, but this place really deserves it. Their customer service is extremely poor. I'm the purchasing agent for a large fabrication company and I've been trying to order lumber from these guys for two weeks. I finally had to give up and go somewhere else. But this isn't my first experience with their poor communication skills, as they screwed up an order so bad that I put them on my DTM (dead to me) vendor list about a year ago. I thought I'd give them another chance but they haven't changed. Fool me twice? Never again. If you decide to order from them, prepare for disappointment, heartbreak, confusion, missed deadlines, empty promises, and terrible communication. read more

I went in middle of a weekday and there were several customers standing around trying to figure out where all the sales reps were. Nobody behind the counter. I finally walked outside and after 15 minutes hunted somebody down. He gave me a price - even wrote it down. I ordered it on the phone and confirmed the price with the sales rep. Next day I get an invoice and they have doubled the delivery charge to $150 (for 10 boards!), and not honored the price. I called back trying to get through for two days - the phones go straight to a voicemail that doesn't even announce the company. Finally got them to honor the price but not the delivery charge. Rip off company and they have a bad attitude. Can't wait for a downturn in the economy so companies like this will fold up. Bottom line is a company with terrible service that price switch on you. Bought cedar boards to redneck my father in laws deck. The 16ft boards were all inconsistent (short) by inch or more. A big problem on a 16 ft deck. Also bought what was said to be 1500 screws for 140.00. Box only had 1000. Called and was told that was the price for that box. Place in pflugerville sells the same 1000 screw box for 70.00. We purchased a composite deck from Austin Wholesale Decking which they installed about 2-3 years ago. We are still under warranty. In August 2018, we called Z (the owner) and reported that a section of our deck was bowing in. After many text and calls, he sent out a "representative" who confirmed that additional beams should have been installed. They agreed they needed to fix this problem. However, months have gone by, texting and calling Z who now avoids any contact. We called the business directly, spoke to Carol who told us we are on the top of their list but they cannot get someone to do the work for the price they can pay (their problem, it shouldn't be ours). After months of excuses she now avoids our calls. 10 months have past and they have done nothing. The company had no problem originally taking our $$$ but follow-up service IS THE WORSE. We would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. They are not reliable or honest and their customer service is HORRIBLE. Give your business to another reliable, honest company. These guys are crooks. Bought some deck stain from them today at their "wholesale" prices and decided to check home depot's website when I got home (they said Home Depot didn't sell it). I paid 95 bucks for 2 gallons from them and Home Depot sells it for 29 bucks per gallon. Exact same product. Called them up and was told I couldn't return it even though the receipt says they take returns with a 25% restocking fee. Even with paying a 25% restocking fee it would be cheaper to buy from Home Depot. Crooks!!! read more

I was redoing my deck with composite decking materials, and visited Austin Wholesale Decking a couple of times to decide on the brand/type - I got good advice from Dennis Minks and got a chance to see small deck sections built out of various materials - this helped us pick the material that we liked. I placed my order for not just the composite decking but also cedar and treated wood from AWD - after the order was placed, I ended up needing more materials and was able to order the same over the phone. I was helped by George who was always professional, polite and helpful. I added to my order 3 times and each time George was fantastic. We ended up needing more 20' boards instead of the 16' boards and I had mis-estimated the amount of lumber needed. I ended up returning all the unnecessary materials and that was handled very efficiently as well. All in all, I would heartily recommend AWD to get your decking supplies. i forgot to thank the guy who helped me load 38 cedar 2x4x12s for my deck so I thought I'd do so here...Thanks Dennis Minks. I would recommend this place over my usual go-to yards because of price $1.55 ft, as well as because what I needed was in stock. Lowes would gave been cheaper had I applied for a credit card and used it to pay, but I am so glad I didn't because I backed my truck up to the 12foot cedar in the yard and the salesman helped me load the boards I wanted. We opened a fresh pallet so the wood wasn't picked over like we found at Lowes. I asked the salesman if they would sell my rejects to Lowes as a joke and he said they took the bad boards and cut them down and used the in other ways--which is important because that is probably why we had to wade through so many boards to find 12 good ones at Lowes. (I like Lowes, shop there alot) We had rejects, but it was pretty nice lumber in general. Anyway, they were helpful--the salesman even put a couple boards in the reject pile before I said to because they were bowed--competitively priced and a quick in and out. Highly recommended. They also had a huge selection of stuff I couldn't afford and nice displays--a privacy fence they had built for display is the prettiest I have ever seen. read more

Find some other place these guys do not know what quality customer service is. I purchased cedar decking material to replace bad boards. I needed long length, Big Box stores do not stock 20'. When I purchased I asked if I needed to pick the boards out as I wanted only good straight boards. I was assured that my order would be pulled and filled with only good boards. I paid the high delivery fee of $75. When I met the driver with my order I made him cut the strapping tape and inspected the boards, only 15 of 30 were acceptable, others had splits, and damage to edges or one side, at the price I paid I expect quality lumbar but that is not what was delivered. When I called to tell their office I wanted replacement boards they told me to come pick them out but they would not deliver them. I stated I paid for delivery. This went back and forth with an attitude. They forgot the old saying the customer is always right. Driver was only quality guy, he stated to me he understood what I needed and he would go back and get another 15 good boards and return. That was day and a half ago, I still don't have my lumbar. read more
