I ordered a dozen Cake Balls for my friend's birthday from 2000 miles away! The packaging and presentation was gorgeous. I personally didn't taste them, but she was elated! The set I got had 3 different flavors - vanilla bean, chocolate & strawberry. There are a couple reasons why I didn't give a 5 star review: - Prices were insanely expensive. $40 for 12 balls = $3.33/per ball (WOW!) + $3 for a bow. - No customization of flavors. I wanted a different set, but it contained flavors I didn't think she would enjoy as much.. so I had to pick a different set I thought was less aesthetically pleasing. - There is a $14.95 weekend delivery option, with a 2-hour window (her birthday was on a Saturday this year). That's no biggie, but the text box to write in a time window disappeared once I selected the delivery option. - Because I couldn't specify a time on the website, I had to choose the pick-up option, and let her know in advance where and when to pick them up.. which spoiled the surprise :( Obviously I still purchased the gift, but I can't see getting these for anything other than an extremely special occasion. read more

They really have balls. Cake balls, that is. I ordered a batch of these the other day by using a Groupon, as I think a lot of other Yelpers did. Three kinds of balls I got: Chocolate, Chocolate Espresso, and Cherry Almond. So this morning I drove over there to pick them up. It was on my way to another errand, so why bother paying for delivery? Austin Cake Ball sure is hard to find. I drove down the little street behind the Hobby Lobby and pulled into where Cake Ball was actually located, but I didn't see any signs anywhere because I had a case of the stupids. So I drove on over to Cap City Comedy Club, to no avail. Then I drove down the road going the other direction, and that's when I saw the little sign that said, "CAKE BALL" with arrows pointing the way (pathetic Yelp won't let me make arrows in my review). I followed the signs until I found a parking spot. Cake Ball is in the corner of the shopping center, suite 104. I chit-chatted with the ultra-hot counter guy (UHCG) for a short while about how their balls compare to Holy Cacao's. My inner juvenile couldn't stop silently laughing about the sexual connotation of the word "balls" and how I was comparing one guy's balls to another guy's balls. I've never been to Holy Cacao, and since Cake Ball charges about the same price, I have no reason to go to Holy Cacao. UHCG pointed out cake balls in the display case that looked like basketballs, and others that had the New Orleans Saints' logo. I said, "I'll come back in the fall and get some Dallas Cowboys balls." Heh. Saying that to UHCG, I almost felt like I was at a sperm bank. Other than the footballs, I don't really see myself ordering any cake balls in the future, unless I'm getting them as a gift for someone else. The Chocolate Espresso cake balls are good, but a little dry. I think they need some espresso icing in between layers of the cake. The Cherry Almond balls are my favorite so far. They have some icing in there, with pieces of fresh cherry and, of course, almonds involved. I haven't tried the straight Chocolate [salty] balls yet, so I can't comment on those. After my cake ball snafu, I had decided I just wasn't that "into" them. Maybe it was me...I could understand if our love wasn't meant to be. I could taste both flavors in my mouth. Honestly, I tried a few more and I'm not proud of my gluttony in the car after our meeting. The balls were all quite good- moist and flavorful, and suprisingly dense. (Think of a cupcake smashed into the size of a ganache truffle, then dipped in a fabulous chocolate shell.) The salted caramel flavor was definitely my favorite. Ok, I admit, this whole review is tailored towards me being able to legitimately say "chocolate salty balls" in a review. I have a correction to make. The Ispahan and the double chocolate cupcakes at Cupcake 2.0 were credited to the incorrect baker. The baker of those scrumptious cupcakes are actually Devrah, and no, you cannot get those commercially. As much as that breaks my heart, I think I can recover. I found out about this mistake when Ben and Stacey read my review, and informed me that they were not the bakers of this cake. They even graciously met me out of their own time and presented me with a box of assorted cake balls: peanut butter, Italian creme, red velvet, banana, and chocolate. These little gems were absolutely gorgeous, almost too pretty to eat. See pictures above. Delicate and tasty, these treats are perfect for any occasion or gifts. The Italian cream cake ball I had was just luscious. The outer coating was firm, but not hard. The inside was super moist and flavorful. I think I'm over my Isaphan crush. The cake balls are made with crumbled cake mixed with butter cream frosting. Then they are hand molded, dipped in confectioner's chocolate, and then artfully decorated. They look like truffles, but they aren't. You might think that these might be overly sweet, but they are just right. The advantages of these 2 bite treats over cupcakes or bigger desserts is that they aren't huge (who needs a gigantic dessert?), they are small so you can get multiple ones without eating sick, and they make easy-to-eat pretty gifts. While Cake by Bridges does not currently have a retail store (coming soon though), we can all hope and pray. read more

The folks at Austin Cake Ball are the most innovative bakers I have found in the cupcake/cake ball sector. Otherl cupcake places are pleasant enough but are often boring because their flavors and chocolate and vanilla with chocolate icing or vanilla icing. The competition thinks it is "wild" if they go with red velvet or carrot options. Austin Cake Ball is really interested in experimentation and their new flavors are really good. These are not your grandmother's cupcakes. Plus - the flavors are really strong - which is a plus. The aftertastes are wonderful - stick in your mouth for a good 20 minutes to half an hour and make you happy. So what is the downside? One - price. Balls are three bucks a ball - and you don't get all that much of a discount if you buy in quantity. If you want to serve these to guests or at a function - prepare to shell out. (Note the balls are fairly priced for what they are. Pay more - Get more - and here you get more.) Secondly - these balls are heavy. We are NOT talking petit fours here - and we are NOT talking cream puffs. You could eat two of these and call it lunch. Their substantiality is completely pleasant. They digest easily and do not sit in your stomach. But they ARE totally filling. And with their strong (good) after tastes - you don't want to follow these or precede these with other food items. So you would want to think two or three times before featuring these at a buffet where you have lots of other food. (I would not use these at a wedding party for example.) If I was doing a reception with coffee for some famous person and I wanted to put out just one item - and I wanted it to be really good (and my pockets were deep) - this would be an excellent choice. I have never actually been to the physical location, but I did partake of some Austin Cake balls at a company launch party once. And they were delicious! They had chocolate ones and red velvet cake balls. The red velvet were my favorite, so moist and yummy. My boyfriend who doesn't even like cake liked them! The cool thing was that they had even done special edible decorations on top of the balls just for the particular party: see pictures. (The launch party was for PetsMD.com so they had mini edible blue chocolate bones and the PetsMD paw print logo design on some of them- so cute!). Not sure how much they had to pay for the ones they got (since they were specially decorated) but $25 for a dozen seems pretty steep to me. These were yummy but not that good. This is a great place to buy (slightly) overpriced sweets to give as a gift from Austin. The cake balls themselves are yummy, look great, and people seem to like them. The come in a nice tin which makes them easy to transport in a suitcase or other luggage and also makes them look like a more substantial gift than the usual plastic bag of goodies. The reason they get only 3 stars instead of 4 is because they're disappointing as a local sweets shop. If you want to go in and get a few cake balls, they're $3/each. The cake balls were lumpy, and looked like they had been dipped into the chocolate coating while sitting on a cooling wire rack you would cook cookies on. This was my first visit to Austin Cake Ball so I bought a variety of six different flavors: Mexican Chocolate, German Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Red Velvet, Chocolate Peppermint, and Vanilla Bean. Each cake ball had a thick outer layer with a creamy, soft cake ball inside. My favorites of the flavors I tried were the vanilla bean and Mexican chocolate. The flavors were simple, but the vanilla came through just enough to cut through the sweet white chocolate outer layer. The cake balls were presented in a beautiful copper colored tin that held the six cake balls snug in place. yum. My husband loves cake. Really really loves cake. He has been known to polish an entire one off by himself within a day or two. While he has a high metabolism, we are also not teenagers any more and have had the inevitable creep of weight over the last several years. Last winter, we decided to do something about it and started exercising and taking better care of ourselves. (By now, you are probably asking.. what does this have to do with Austin Cake Ball, but I'm getting to it...) We've both lost a bunch of weight but we still like our indulgences. Austin Cake Ball fits into that scheme perfectly. One of the things the husband and I have learned is that we would rather have 2-3 really amazing bites of one thing than a whole plate of it. On Saturdays, we tend to drive up to North Lamar for Vietnamese for lunch. Ever since I introduced the husband to cake balls, the car seems to magically guide itself to their nearby storefront for a post-lunch dessert. We've tried other places, but these are the ones he lusts after. We've also sampled most of their flavors and the one we keep going back to is salted caramel. It's just so good. Words really can't describe it. Just go get one. My husband who probably thinks cake should be its own food group finds himself completely sated by one or two cake balls. He thinks they pack enough punch that he doesn't really want more. While I'm positive these things aren't low calorie, I do have to think that turning him into a happy camper after one cake ball is better than 3 slices of cake with a huge glass of milk. Their cake balls are decadent and pack a huge amount of flavor in each one. While I do think the salted caramel is the best of the lot, I've yet to hit a clunker.
