I haven't been in years but I always loved this place amazing sushi and other things.

When I did a staycation in Hamilton in February 2020, I remember passing by an August 8 restaurant. It has a handful of locations that offer all-you-can-eat sushi. Last month, I was back in Hamilton for a mini staycation. I needed dinner. I looked on my Uber Eats app and saw that this August 8 had a number of BOGO items. I had to get in on the deals. I ordered the following items: - Avocado salad - California roll - BOGO - Sticky rice (3) - Salmon sashimi (3) - Steamed sponge cake (4) - BOGO I drove over to the eatery to pick up my order. It's located in a tiny plaza with limited parking. I managed to snag the only parking spot available. I had to careful back in, as there was a car parked illegally in the parking lane. It's the downside to fetching or heading over here to dine. The parking situation is atrocious and downright dangerous. More on that in a bit. I headed to the counter and got the nicest young man. I let him know that I had an Uber Eats order and stated my name. He found my order and handed a bag over to me. I thanked him and left the eatery. There were a handful of students hanging around outside. One of the guys was sweet to open and hold the door for me. Kindness isn't completely dead. It was a nice touch. The downside was that the woman who parked illegally parked in the fire lane didn't bother doing a check behind her and decided to back up. I don't get why she needed to back up, but she nearly backed into me. I was not impressed. I actually managed to get out of the way and had a good look at her from the passenger side of her car. I let her know through some arm gestures that she needed to be careful and that she nearly ran over me. My gestures did have words accompanying them. I can't state them here. They weren't pleasant words that I use regularly. I got to my car and safely placed my food in it. I then drove back to the hotel room to chow down. The food was yummy on the whole. I will break things down: Avocado salad The miso dressing was flavourful. The avocado slices were delicate and were starting to turn brown. The veggies were fresh, but I didn't love the iceberg lettuce. I'd skip getting this salad. California rolls Excellent! The filling was warm, which was different. I loved them. The fake crab, avocado, and julienned cucumbers were so good. They did have black sesame seeds around them. Sticky rice (3) It was a bit weird seeing white paper wrapped around each bundle of sticky rice with its own leaf wrapping. I felt that it was a waste of paper. The bundles had more white pepper than necessary. The filling was generous, with small chunks of pork. I ate one each day. They heat up nicely. Salmon sashimi (3) The best! Each piece melted in my mouth. You don't need to chew much. The sashimi was super fresh. Steamed sponge cake (4) I am a huge fan of traditional steamed sponge cake. There was a twist with the version here. You get dainty triangles with layers of sponge cake. I'm not sure what separated each layer, but this cake was subtly sweet and still warm. I loved it so much. I want to return and get some more food. I'd avoid the avocado salad. The parking situation makes me want to fetch food from a different August 8, though. Maybe I should try coming during lunchtime when I'm in the area and see if parking is better. (442) read more

I ordered it for delivery. Food arrived fast. I ordered 3 sushi rolls (Red dragon roll, Philadelphia Tuna roll, and cheesy crab roll) hot and sour soup, pork bbq steamed buns, sui mai, and an order of spicy salmon tacos. The sushi rolls were quite good, but the rest was just eh. The Chinese food there isn't tasty, so I would recommend just ordering sushi rolls. The hot and sour soup was overly spicy from an overload of black pepper. I definitely do not recommend that soup. read more

Went last night for dinner and unfortunately was still considered holiday pricing, but regardless was absolutely delicious! It was our first time and we were on the hunt for an AYCE Sushi place that also has stuff for non seafood eaters. Their dim sum options were fantastic and so yummy! We ordered so many of the bbq pork buns & pork soup dumplings which are steamed to order. They were unfortunately out of a lot of their specialty drinks so hoping next time we go we can try the Vietnamese iced coffee! Overall will be back again and again! read more

The first August 8. I like coming here. Fast service, food is fresh, and friendly associates. I like how they don't mess up the orders like a lot of other ayce do. The only thing that I don't like is the chewiness of the beef. I wish it's more tender. Other than that, it's flavorful. There's free parking, but very limited. There's no denying that the allure of both AYCE sushi and dimsum is strong. While I think the dimsum at this location is consistent with their other restaurants (pretty good, nothing amazing but still nice to eat), their rolls and sushi have so much more rice. The Toronto location has a much better ratio of fish/contents to rice. Service here is also pretty slow. I got up to grab soy sauce and on almost every occasion, servers would come by but not grab our dirty plates. Which when you have a lot of plates due to dim sum and AYCE, can really be obvious. If you want to come for their lunch menu, just order everything on their tablets before 3:30pm hits. This is a pretty nice feature because you can see everything on the tablet and order it instantly. Despite many faults of this restaurant, I've still been here at least 5 times in the last year. That's mostly because Hamilton doesn't really have better options for AYCE sushi, and the dimsum is an excellent plus. I would just say that you should keep your expectations lower when coming here. read more

Absolute must-try. Finally an all-you-eat sushi restaurant that has a robust enough menu for non-seafood eaters to feel like they're getting their monies worth. The staff was plentiful, and responsive. You're given a 90 minute window to use your tablet to order whatever you wish...and then it appears! The food shows up almost immediately, no matter the course. Seafood, cooked items, deserts, all almost instantaneous delivery. Holiday pricing was a little higher than usual, but pricing for children was normal. They price the kids based on their age, which I thought was totally fair. Can't wait to come back, but be prepared to circle for parking spots or pay somewhere close by. read more

This place has got to be one of my favorite all you can eat please in Ontario. There are a few others but this ranks top 3 for sure. Their menu is very extensive for dinner but also comes with a higher price than usual of other places, but I think its worth it because of the Dim Sum that comes with it. You will take at least 15 minutes of going through each page of the menu and then when you order, I ordered only a one of each to make sure its something I like. Once the first round was done and I knew what I loved, I ordered a lot of those. Some of my favorite things was the breaded chicken, and that special tempura roll with that mango sauce on it. That was very good and I got that one like three times. Daniel who came with me that doesn't eat raw fish found a lot of things on the iPad that he liked. He said everything was good. His favorite was the bacon wrapped asparagus, and the beef short rib. Service was really quick and whatever I asked for, was done with no problem and no negative attitude. Mediocre food, overrated, service was decent although sometimes the items I had ordered never came... The ambiance was okay without much annoyance. This is the 3rd August 8 I've been to and after reading some other reviews before posting this they were right about this being one of the less rated/quality establishments of the franchise. read more

At least 3 things we ordered never came, we got at least 2 things we did not order, and twice we were brought the incorrect dish (mango and crab maki instead of mango cream cheese roll). Several dishes with fish ended up at our table and we don't eat fish. We came about a year ago and there were vegetarian hand rolls but not this time. read more

The service and food was all great especially ordering all from an ipad. But at the end, our dessert came really late even one of my desserts never came and told a server about it. Still never showed up so we asked for the bill by pressing the call server still no show. So thats the reason why they didn't get a 5 star. Still good food but the experience at the end wasn't great. read more

September 21, 2018 - When we arrived in Hamilton for the BTS Love Yourself Tour, we didn't know where to eat. But as we were walking towards the FirstOntario building we noticed this sushi restaurant. So, we decided to go in and give it a try. When we got in it was quite busy and it was a bit of a wait for a table. Once we were seated we ordered everything we wanted on the tablet and except for dessert we wanted to order it last. Almost everything came and a few were missing. But it was okay cause we were kinda getting full. Then we ordered the fried banana dessert along with some ice cream. Our ice cream started to melt and we waited a long time thinking why is it taking so long to fry a banana. We asked a waiter about it and he said he would check. By the time we both went to the washroom, other waiters and waitresses cleaned our table, we even asked for the bill... the other waiter never came back. So we decided to go. I don't know if they ran out of bananas or if the deep fryer stopped working. But I really wanted my fried banana with my ice cream. Overall: Food 7/10 Service 5/10 read more

From my favorites I could name custard dim sum, scallops and a few other items I forgot the name. It seems like it is in the middle of nowhere but it's a great place. read more

Although appealing to stuff our faces with the all you can eat, we decided to do the August Boat $45, so if we didn't eat it all we could take it home. Added edamame and miso soups to start, our bill came to $66/2 The red dragon roll was our favourite. The only item that was disliked was the surf clam, it looked old/ dried out on the back side of it. Overall, food was good, service was prompt and location was clean. We'll come back read more

August 8 - August Boat - Japanese Near Me - Hamilton, Ontario

If you have never been here this is what to expect. There is basically no parking so expect to look for street parking. When we came the place was packed! There was a waiting list but keep an eye on the hostess because even though she may write your name down she may not remember you and just give the table away to the party closest to her. After you finally sit down, don't wait for a server to come to explain what to do, or how things work. There are no actual servers, all the servers are runners. You do all your food ordering on a tablet that doesn't give prices for any of the food items and doesn't keep track of what you have ordered and what has been brought to your table. I highly recommend bringing a pen and paper with you if you want to keep track of your items. We had to ask for 2 items that were not brought to our table. On the printed menu they are an option for a 2 person dinner, but I am guessing that's for take-out or delivery only, since nothing like that located in the tablet. Even though there is a button to call for a server if you have questions, you'll be waiting all night. At the end of your meal, you have to get the attention of someone to get your check and be prepared to pay whatever they want to charge since there is no itemized receipt. I honestly don't understand how this place is a thing. The food wasn't that great either. I would put with all the hazle if that at least was great. Sadly, this place did not meet any of my standards, not in service, food or general quality. read more

Owners are grade A a-holes. Parked in the lot in the front (no signs, keep in mind, stating that it is for customers only). Went here today in hopes of taking my son for lunch. Was not open yet. Walked across the lot and just around the corner to put something in the public mail box while we wait. Come back to car, less than five mins later, and the bylaw officer was there stating that the owners called them as soon as I left the car. Thankfully it's a private lot so the ticket doesn't have to be paid, but it really makes you think what kind of people have that much time on their hands that they want to wish that karma on themselves? Heard from friends that they have mice and cockroaches and that they do not properly store their fish as well. I'd be cautious about eating here. read more

August 8 is my favourite place to get All-You-Can-Eat Sushi and Dim Sum. Whenever I am in Hamilton for business or pleasure I try to come here. The lunch is a great deal, it's is $14.99 per person. Yes, that is sushi and dim sum. Great food and excellent service for a all-you-can-eat place, and the decor is great, too! Yes, there are all your standard Sushi and Dim Sum items which you can get almost anywhere else. Some of my favourites that are not available at many other places include the Seaweed Salad, Beef Ribs, Steamed Sponge Cake, and the Mango Pudding is great, I have been known to eat eight (8) at a sitting. If you're looking for a great place to Asian place eat out in downtown Hamilton, you owe it to yourself to come to August 8! P.S. Parking here is problematic at the best of times, you may find it easier to park on Wilson. read more

Best all you can eat in town! Very fresh Sashami, the sushi choices are all interesting and everything that was brought out was a+. A tad on the expensive side, at 28 bucks for the ayce meal, so that brings it down to a solid 4 stars. Very very good spot! read more

I normally won't go out of my way to write up a review. It's the first time we went back to an ayce sushi place since covid all started and We came all the way from Toronto coz a friend highly recommend this place. Was I not just disappointed from the food( if you like putting mouthful of oil with their tempura that literally burnt my tongue n sashimi that tastes like its been frozen for the past months, even my 9yrs old could tell the difference), it is the service that needs to be addressed. We came on a Saturday night at 6pm, and we were already told they are out of most the stuff that we ordered. I would appreciate if I was told when I made the reservation n b4 they sat us down. Given the raving reviews on yelp, I still believe it's still a reputable franchise, but I would recommend to stay away from this particular location. read more

Very Disappointing! Over priced and over rated. We went here for dinner on Saturday at 6:00. Once we started eating, the server told us that they do not have scallop, beef tataki, salmon belly, or basa that night? I mean, wth? They should of told us before we sat down. They seem to not have the most pricey items on a Saturday night when they charge premium price. Selection of items are already limited compared to other ayce in nearby Mississauga.... and they don't even have 4 items listed. The quality of food was bad too. Sashimi were not fresh, fried food seem to use outdated oil. Lack of flavor on various items. I rarely post reviews, but I do want to warn others. Don't waste your money, don't even try.... Came here for mother's day and it was terrible. Normally I would've have minded that much but they increased the price per person so it was $35 per person! Didn't say that anywhere until we got the bill and we asked why it was so much. Also we kept getting food from other tables and our orders kept going to other tables as we got some rather interesting items placed on our table that no one was interested in. read more

The food is great. The two issues are wait time and parking. Their parking is super small with about 15 spots available, which typically there are only 2-3 available at the best of times. The packed restaurant also then slows down the younger staff from getting the food to the customer. I do find it is still worth the wait, and would recommend. read more

I came for lunch here on a Thursday at 1pm for their all-you-can-eat at $15.99 a person. The decor and look of the restaurant inside was very nice. It's like going to a Moxie's or Keg and not an AYCE sushi joint. Service was good -- ordering is done on an iPad so you're not waiting around for the server to come when you're ready to order. The food tasted fresh and delicious! As a bonus, they've got dim sum on the menu as well. I had some shrimp and chive dumplings from the dim sum dishes and that was delicious. There wasn't any special "dim sum" sauces that came with it so I was just using the sushi soy sauce for dipping. For the sushi, I liked that some of them can be ordered in a quantity of one. It may seem insignificant but when there are lots to try, ordering a single piece of a variety of different types of sushi makes it so you can try many things and not get full right away on just one dish. I like the beef short ribs from sushi restaurants and ordered those on this occasion here. They were quite good. The only thing was that I was started to get quite full by the time I started eating the short ribs so I only ate one out of the 3 or 4 pieces it came with. They weren't all the same thickness - had one thin piece and some thicker pieces. I personally prefer short ribs to all be thin pieces. But again, I'm about eating smaller quantities of each and taking in more variety. They serve you wasabi and yellow pickled ginger with your sushi here. This restaurant has so many good reviews, but this is quite deceiving. Upon arrival, the restaurant looks run-down on the outside (no curb appeal). I should have just kept driving, but I wanted to keep an open mind. The entryway had a foul odor smell and I should have turned around and walked out, but again I wanted to keep an open mind. After a few minutes, I was seated in a booth that was not adequately cleaned. The waitress served the table waters, and she did not even bother to explain anything about the iPad ordering process (this was the only good thing about this restaurant) or the all you can eat pricing. Once the order was submitted, the food did arrive very quickly. The sushi menu was small, and the quality of food was unsatisfactory. I proceeded to order an alcoholic beverage, and I was not at all surprised on how awful it was. I attempted to taste it, but that's as far as it went. The beverage was pushed over to the side of the table and left there. This goes for me, and my guests as well. Then best part about this experience was being able to leave, which had finally arrived. I'm giving it a 4 compared to other sushi buffet restaurants. I was pleasantly surprised - I travel here from states about once a month but haven't heard of similar type thing back home so wasn't sure what to expect. Overall the sushi is pretty basic which I think is a good thing. They do offer a ton of items on the menu and they were great! Best all you can eat in Hamilton, actually probably the best sushi in Hamilton. The iPads make ordering really easy and removes the mess of using paper and pencils. The staff are always on their feet taking plates and bringing more food. Personally I love the eel they serve and the mango smoothies are quite tasty. Now it should be mentioned that this is a very westernised sushi. So do not expect things like Natto or extremely niche Japanese dishes. That being said they so serve chicken feed it you do request it. The dessert is pretty good. I personally go for the steamed bun with Green Tea ice cream. read more

August 8 is a gustatory goldmine! I have been there with friends and family, and we all agree - it is probably the best sushi place for a radius of maybe 200 miles. And the bonus is, that they serve dim sum as well as sushi. No other sushi restaurant that I know of serves it (except the Mandarin during their dumpling festival)! August 8 is located in a tiny plaza in the heart of downtown Hamilton. It is not huge, but it manages to seat a lot of people - which is good, because it is ALWAYS busy! Now, let me tell you about the food: whatever dish is supposed to be cold, borders on freezing, and whatever dish is supposed to be hot, is piping - the way it should be (keep a glass of water near you to extinquish the burning in your mouth, or wait a few minutes for your hot food to cool before digging in)! You can tell that they use only the best ingredients in their items, and everything is prepared with great care and artistry. Their menu is also the largest I have seen in a sushi restaurant. The staff are young men and women (possibly university students), who are very sweet and polite. yes, they do sometimes forget orders, or mix items up, but they are so adorable, and the food is so good, that you can't be mad at them! Honestly people, it doesn't get any better than this. Took my parents out for dinner on Christmas Eve here, and loved every minute of it. This location used to be a purely dim sum place... and its roots are what separate it from the slew of purely sushi all-you-can-eat places in the Hammer -- the addition of dim sum to the menu. To me, this variety makes all the difference. It was fairly empty because of the holiday so we didn't have the same issue with service or forgotten orders other reviewers had -- to the contrary, I had three different servers come over the course of one minute asking me if they could refill my Coke. And I did refill my Coke, and it was delicious, thanks. I don't promote eating disorders, but incidentally starving myself all day long and stuffing my face full for the entire meal was a good choice, I must say. Top picks include the hot and sour soup, the eggplant-sandwiched shrimp, spicy salmon rolls, and the perfectly marinated mixed vegetables. Sesame balls for dessert. And Coke goes well. If you're hitting Hamilton (and I'm sorry if you are), August 8 ranks top points for attentive and friendly service, a fresh and robust menu, chill ambience, and an impeccable dollar-to-value ratio.
