I told my French pen pal (and friend) I was visiting and that I wanted to go to a place locals go to. He picked Au Bougnat. Now I have no idea how often locals actually go to this restaurant, but the restaurant was packed. I heavily suggest making reservations like my friend did. It was a group of four. My companion and I arrived first, later my friend and his girlfriend. The restaurant was buzzing with people and the staff here is fully bilingual. I think the waitress didn't know what to do with me. She spoke English to me, she spoke French to me. It was massive franglais. I think she was surprised to see a foreigner being fluent or somewhat fluent in her language. I say the latter because there was a table that you could easily tell were Americans (and heck I am one, too), but they were loud and unable to speak a word of French. I felt that as soon as the waitress saw I spoke her language, she was much nicer. I mean, she was nice beforehand, but she was even nicer after. The menu for this restaurant is limited. Don't let that deter you though. Their options are quite tasty. They usually have a menu, as well as a specials board listing what's available. That evening, aside from wine (because it's France, after all), we ordered onion soup, some chicken dish whose name I can't recall, escargot, and a couple of plates of a risotto with prawns. I can't personally comment on any of the plates except the onion soup, but it was just the right thing to hit the spot. I didn't eat much that evening as I was suffering from jet lag and I had had lunch at the airport with disastrous results (a.k.a. I puked). Needless to say, the onion soup was more than enough for me. It was perfectly seasoned and came with bread and it was just all I needed. Well, that's a lie. I ordered the most beautiful coffee afterwards, while my friends had cheese plates and crepes and I forget what else. The coffee truly was sensational. It felt, much like the soup, in that it warmed up my toes but more so my soul. Honestly this place was great minus the fact that the tables made me feel fat. I'm not fat by any means, but the tables are extremely close together and it's hard to get in and out of them. I know this is typical of France, but sigh, I felt like a sardine. A great local restaurant in the shadow of Notre Dame. My wife and I had spent the afternoon exploring Île de la Cité and had an early dinner here before a concert at Sainte-Chapelle Cathedral. The waitress was super friendly and fun. My wife had the pork and I had the lamb stew. Both were great. The highlight to me was the pate plate starter. We were looking for an establishment not far from Notre Dam. The reviews were great so we made a reservation. The amazing coincidence was that on our first trip to Paris in 2019, we stumbled across this place and grabbed a glass of wine but didn't remember the name. So, when we arrived, we were so excited to see that this was the same place! The bar was full with friendly spirited patrons for the Ruby match that was happening that day. We were seated in the dining room and it's so cozy and inviting! I ordered the steak and fries and my husband ordered the burger. We were both really happy with our selections. I couldn't read the desserts in French so I asked the waitress if any of them were chocolate cake and she said, yes! That was of course what we had, a really delicious chocolate lava cake that was 100% worth the wait! Au Bougnat is around the corner from Notre Dame on a charming, quiet street. The relatively small indoor dining room was packed to the gills when we arrived for dinner! I'm so glad I made a reservation! Old timey French music played on the stereo including classics like La Boheme by Charles Aznavour. They also use a dumb waiter to deliver food from the kitchen, which is pretty nifty. Our meal began with shots of spinach soup as an amuse bouche. It was so yummy, served warm but not piping hot, creamy yet not rich. It had really good flavor with tiny croutons for texture. Mom and I both decided to get appetizers and main dishes as part of the "formula" for dinner. My creamy mushroom soup was delicious but pretty rich. The bacon garnish was crunchy and not too smokey, a nice touch. Even though my soup was good, it was totally overshadowed by mom's amazing frog legs drowning in parsley garlic butter and fresh lemon. I had never tried frog legs before, but I ate two sets of legs and wished I had an entire plate to myself! The frog meat was super tender and just absorbed all that awesome flavor. The delicateness of the meat on the minuscule bones actually reminded me a bit of eating quail, another favorite of mine. When all the frog legs were eaten, we used slices of baguette to soak up the remaining parsley garlic butter on the plate. These frog legs were exceptional. They really put my mushroom soup to shame. Mom was the winner in the main course department tonight as well. Her grilled seabass with braised fennel, lemon and cardamom condiments was excellent, really well prepared and flavorful. But things went downhill for me very quickly with my main course. I opted for the grilled rumpsteak and potato galette with red wine and shallots sauce. The sauce was easily the best thing on the plate. It was actually super tasty. The steak was impossible to cut and chewy. I complained to the server that I was struggling to cut my steak, and she demonstrated how to cut a steak which was insulting to me (I went to culinary school--I know how to cut meat). It still took her effort to cut it even though she said "see how easily it cuts." It didn't. Even after she cut the remainder of my steak it was way too chewy to eat unless I hacked it into even smaller pieces. It was a combination of an inefficient knife and a chewy steak (it was rumpsteak after all and not a filet or even rib-eye, I should have known better, I guess). The potatoes were also bland, and desperately in need of some salt. Our server offered our choice of complimentary desserts to make up for the steak fiasco. This was much appreciated. I had the jasmine crème brûlée which had great jasmine flavor, a creamy, rich texture without feeling super heavy, and a perfectly brûléed crackly crust. Memories of that awful steak started to fade... Mom had a trio of ice creams: chocolate, vanilla, and caramel. They were all excellent. We also had 30% off the remainder of our food items since we booked our reservation on TripAdvisor, so it worked out pretty well. Even though I had a bad experience with my main course, believe it or not other aspects of the meal really made up for it and I would probably revisit Au Bougnat if nothing else than to order 10 plates of the frog legs and just go to town on them. read more

In the shadows, literally, of the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, you will find Au Bougnat, a small restaurant and bar with quaint charm and in a historic building. You enter the restaurant through the bar, entering the tiny dining room through a short, narrow passage in which you must bend at the waist in order to avoid bashing your noggin. A three-course dinner will set you back a modest €29 (€24 for two courses). Starting with a 50cl blonde draft beer (€6.50) and a bottle of sparkling water (€7) while we waited for our friend to arrive, we then ordered from both the "Specials" and regular menu. Our server was very kind, spoke perfect English and was very attentive. We were first brought a small, cold cauliflower soup to start our four course meal and it was delicious. For our entree (starter - €9 à la carte), I decided on the Oeuf Cocotte aux Escargots de Borgogne - eight snails sautéed in garlic butter and placed on a brioche then topped with a lightly poached egg - while my wife and her friend had the Gratinée á l'Oignon (French onion soup). My escargot were sublime, a term I rarely use, but very fitting in this case. The poached egg oozed its yoke as I cut into it, a preparation that would have made even Gordon Ramsey sing the chef's praises, and every bite was as good, if not better, than the last. The onion soup was slightly sweet and salty with plenty of sautéed onions and topped with a slice of bread and gooey, delightful, melted white cheese. Both my wife and I ordered the plat (main course - €18 à la carte) Filet Mignon Roti, Risotto de Blè, Jus Rèduit and our friend the Entrecôte de Boeuf (350g), Pressè de Pomme de Terre, Sauce au Poivre Vert. Our center cut pork filets sat atop a generous serving of risotto while surrounded by a dark brown sauce reduced during the cooking of the pork. The pork was cooked perfectly and was very tender, the reduction light and savory, and the creamy risotto the perfect accompaniment ... YUM! Our friend's 12 ounce ribeye steak was topped with a creamy peppercorn sauce and accompanied by a crispy baked potato puree. The steak was huge and well cooked, the sauce delicious, and the potatoes very tasty. For dessert (€8 à la carte), I went with the decadent Chocolate and Hazelnut Tart and my wife the Crème Brûlée while our friend decided to go with a much healthier green salad. My tart was delish, a creamy chocolate with chunks of hazelnut baked in a round tart shell and my wife's crème brûlée was very well done, creamy with a crispy sugar topping ... HOOAH! The 2-course and 3-course meals are quite a bargain compared to ordering á la carte with a savings of €3 and €6 respectively, so that is definitely the way to go. I have to say that for the price, Au Bougnat is a terrific value, especially considering the fact that it is so close to tourist central. We were incredibly happy with our experience at Au Bougnat for dinner. From the atmosphere to the staff to the food and wine, we had a wonderful evening. Close to the Notre Dame it is in a great location off the busy foot traffic path. The food was memorable and would highly recommend the coq a vin (even with ours slightly modified due to a poultry shortage in Paris). We initially came for the preset menu, but decided against it because the options didn't sound appealing. We ended up trying the chicken dish, and it was very lack luster. The flavors were just ok, and the portion was actually quite small for almost 20 Euros. Overall, my impression is that it's an underwhelming, overpriced French restaurant. Can't vouch for others in the area, but I'd recommend a different option if you are able. Service was just ok, as we weren't tended too much and often had to flag down the waitress even though there was only one other table occupied during our visit. Someone mentioned Au Bougnat to me, and I figured why not! I needed me a real meal, it's a little tricky finding one during travels. Just a short walk away from the Notre Dame, on a quiet street corner. Au Bougnat is cozy, inviting and has a hallway some may need to "duck" for. (I'm 5'2" so no ducking necessary). Anyways we stopped for lunch. Decided we needed some water, wine and a fulfilling lunch. My filet, pictured here, was beautifully done. The gravy/sauce was balanced between savory, buttery and salty. Waiters spoke perfect English and were attentive to our needs. No need to worry about any service issues. Dinner starts off with a refreshing complimentary carrot cream. A delightful surprise. Had the salmon for the starter. 3 words: Fresh and flavorful. Followed up with cod for the main course. Softest fish I ever had; it literally melts in your mouth and really complements the mash potatoes. Dessert was homemade ice cream. Smooth, rich, and creamy - it was by far one of the better ice creams I've had :) One last thing. On the way to the bathroom, saw the chefs meticulously decorate the plates. My favorite place to eat in Paris. You are treated as family in this special place. I had my first Picon Bière in the bar, which you walk through to get to the restaurant. The food is excellent. It's a high standard in what I believe to be the food capital of the world. It's hard to pick a stand out on the menu because everything I've had here was great. Our first meal in Paris! We had read about this place on Yelp and read how busy this place can get. Interestingly, when we arrived all the tables were full, however they told us it would just be about a 10 minute wait. Another American family came in after us who were also willing to wait. Then a local business man and his coworker arrived. He wanted to be seated, however the hostess explained we had been there awhile and he would have to wait. We actually got a great seat in no time at all. I had the veal stew and it was very delicious. It was extremely tender and was served in a small crock pot. My husband had the special which was duck and pasta. The flavor was great but the duck was a little tough. Definitely worth going to while in this area. read more

The good: Escargots, white pudding with morels, the potato gratin, œuf mollet, pistachio crème brûlée, cheese plate The average: Terrine, the steaks (both overcooked despite asking for medium rare), the tarte aux pommes The bad: The coq au vin was downright terrible: my mother had to use a steak knife to cut through the chicken. That's shocking for a French bistro. Service. I dunno, maybe they were understaffed, but they forgot about one person's order, forgot the second bottle of wine, and then took forever to finalize the check. Not a great experience. Ordinarily I would never eat near a huge tourist draw like the Notre Dame but we needed something convenient in the area. There were good things to eat here but it was so hit or miss (and on French classics!) that I would not suggest this restaurant to others. read more

During my recent stay in the Latin Quarter, I found this lovely little spot after the restaurant I originally planned to go to was closed. I am so glad that original restaurant was closed because I had the best meal of my trip here. I was traveling by myself and the waitresses were very friendly and made my visit all the more enjoyable by helping me with decisions and answering questions that I had about Paris in general. They were a bit oily but they were delicious and didn't taste "froggy":). For my entree, I had the risotto with tiger prawns and bittersweet sauce. It was delightful and I definitely recommend. For desert, I had a lemon créme brûlée. It had a perfectly crisp top and a sweet, lemony inside. But most of all, the service at this restaurant was amazing. Day 7 - Thursday Meal - Dinner Table for 2 - relaxing last night in Paris Charming - set in the backstreets on Ile de la Cite (excuse my keyboard for neglecting the proper accent inflections). We walked in without reservations for an early dinner (around 8pm) just behind a group of locals. We paused in the front bar area - noticing a calm but buzzy scene - and were able to be immediately seated. We followed our waitress (one of two) and bent halfway over through the entry way to the dining area (yellow-striped caution tape at top for a reason, and a reason why both their waitresses appeared to be under 5 feet... minimizes the incidence of work place injury), most other tables were occupied by out-of-towners (eg: tourists). Overall, the vibe was classic with a hipster twist. Not really sure how they pulled off this balance, but it worked. That and the awesome dumb waiter I watched being used to send prepared dishes up in, and used plates down, that appeared original to the building - just made the ambiance for me! For an extremely reasonable 28 Euros (I think) per person - we each enjoyed three courses, and also ordered a lovely bottle of Saint Julien that we topped up at the end with a half pitcher of Bordeaux to extend the enjoyment through dessert. We both were served what we would call an amuse bouche in the States - but I don't think the French use that term - it was just a small shot glass of delicious puree zucchini creme soup. Yum. Entrees (aka: appetizers): tuna tartare; and... the most AMAZING thing I had in Paris. I will be experimenting to see if I can recreate, but: braised leeks topped with a poached egg some sort of vinaigrette and I don't know what other heaven when into this dish. D-I-V-I-N-E! Then onto a wonderful shrimp dish (presented head-on, but somehow already peeled for ease of eating) and lamb shoulder (falling off the bone)! Though only a few hundred feet from Notre Dame, this small place has a neighborhood feel, without any tourist splash. Friendly bilingual service, and generous portions. Not a lot of choices, but what we chose were all excellent (estouffade de veau, gambas a la Catalane, escargots, glaces assortis). Wine list well priced (house 75cl pichet less than 20 euros). Dinner for two with wine, service, and taxes came to 75 euros. Tip: the 24 euro formule gives you a main plus either a starter or a dessert: The 29 euro version gives all three. No need to go the more expensive route. Given the generous portions, a couple could each do the 24E formule, with one going for the starter and the other choosing the dessert. You each have a main and share the rest, with enough saved to cover drinks. read more

The place just feels like history from the building itself to the utensils. The staff are outgoing and friendly and make you feel welcomed. And the best part of the whole experience is the food. Au Bougnat is a favorite bistro on Lle de la Cite just a short walk from Notre Dame Cathedral. I make a point to eat here at least once for lunch/dinner during my trip. The frog legs, veal terrine and cod fillets are delicious. The creme brûlée is perfectly made here. The French wine list is a good representation of all France's great winemaking provinces. My personal favorites are Bordeaux cabernet franc and merlot, and Bourgogne pinot noir. Bon Appetit! read more

This was a recommended restaurant from a person living here so of course we tried it. We've been in Paris for 2 weeks and every meal was delicious since our arrival but this was such a disappointment. My wife had the calves liver which was very undercooked and thick, not expected so it was sent back to be cooked more. When it arrived it was ok but mostly tasteless. I had the prawns and they were undercooked and disgusting, I did not send them back just couldn't eat much of it. The accompanying vegetable was also tasteless. Ambience is tight and old pub like in appearance. Warm with no fresh air makes the place uncomfortable. We left with the feeling that we would not be back. After this bad experience we thought maybe we just ordered the wrong food. We went back for lunch a few days later. Another very bland and unexceptional meal. My wife had swordfish which was tough and had almost no taste to it. I had the sausage which was tough too and too salty. Again nothing memorable. It was just a waste of time and we would never go back. There are too many wonderful restaurants here and it is a shame that they can serve this mediocre food and remain in business. Not sure how they manage to get past 2 stars... Avoid this place. read more
