Mediocre heavy food with zero atmosphere. Lamb burger was two bites of lamb on a plain bun for $8. Looks nothing like picture. Just like going to emergency doctor for $50

Just had an unforgettable dining experience at Atlas Kitchen in the Upper West Side, right near Columbia University. This place is a true gem! The restaurant's massive space and stunning decor are inspired by mountains and the sea, making it a feast for the eyes before you even take your first bite. The ambiance is just perfect for a special night out or a cozy meal with friends or a big party. Atlas Kitchen serves up a mix of classic Chinese, Hunanese, and Sichuan cuisines, and every dish is a work of art. From the vibrant flavors to the exquisite presentation, it's clear they put a lot of love into their food. I highly recommend checking out this spot if you're in NYC. We ordered Sliced Pork belly with garlic sauce Spicy wood ear duo Tender poached chicken with green chili sauce Stewed chicken with ginseng soup Stewed spare rib with dry long bean Slow braised ribbon fish in brown sauce Fried rice ball with fresh fruits Black salted egg custard bun Pinot Noir Follow @spinx17 for more NTC food recs!

My expectations for dining options on the UWS are exceedingly low, but I was going to be in the area, and Atlas Kitchen seemed like one of the potentially less disappointing places to meet a friend for dinner. We started with the dried tofu salad and wood ear mushrooms ("mu-er"). These were both excellent. Marinated wood ear mushrooms are one of my all-time favorite dishes, and the version here was fragrant, lightly spicy, and an all around excellent start to the meal. For a main course I was in the mood for something hearty and opted for the staple mapo tofu. It ended up being a bit too greasy for my taste, but it was not bad.

Great service - reasonable prices! Very cool menu. Preserved eggs are yummy as are chicken wings

Great spot for some authentic Chinese food! We went for a Saturday dinner and it was pretty empty. Must be because it's very uptown but I'd go out of my way to come here again. We got the walnut prawns, yang chow fried rice and the chicken soup. The prawns were big and perfectly sweet and crispy. The fried rice really hit the spot and was well balanced. The soup was just ok though. There wasn't that depth of flavor that I was looking for. The ambiance is also super cute so it's good for a nice dinner.

I've passed by this place a few times and noticed it always looks busy but haven't had the chance to try it. Brought my parents here as their first dining experience in this neighborhood. The inside is nicely decorated and looks pretty. We were told to wait inside when we came in. We looked at the menu for about 10 mins then I asked the servers how long and they said 10 mins. It was about accurate. 3/5 Scallion pancakes - crispy. Not the best ones I've had but still good 4.5/5 Sauteed potato, bell pepper and eggplant - my mom really enjoyed this dish and complimented how good the texture of the eggplant and potatoes were. Nothing was overcooked and had the right amount of bite. 4.5/5 Mapo tofu - yum! So flavorful. This was a joy to eat. 3/5 Fish fillet in chili oil - pretty good. The soup was flavorful but very spicy. My dad and I tolerate a good amount of spice but this was too much. I mainly deducted stars for the spice level and for how oily the broth is. The servers were nice and helpful. I found a little strand of black hair (not my hair color) in my rice and he immediately swapped it out without saying much. We took our time eating and no one rushed us. I will say it gets pretty loud in here and the tables are rather close together so its not the best place to have a lot of conversation. A nice setting to eat with friends though. I noticed a lot of young people here in groups. Would return with a group of friends.

I tried Atlas Kitchen with my boyfriend. We tried various different dishes (way more than we could eat) and really enjoyed every dish for the most part. Our top 2 favorites were the pork & crab soup dumplings and the prawns & broccoli. The only dish I wouldn't recommend was the minced beef egg drop soup which just tasted bland, without much flavor. We did have a reservation as it was a Friday evening, but it looked like there were 2-3 tables unoccupied. The restaurant was clean with a really nice ambiance and superior service. We will definitely be coming back.

    Pork belly. Photogenic but dry

4.5 stars but not quite ready to kick it over to 5 on the Yelp system. Well, well, well. Who knew that tucked away in Cathedral Hill was one of the most interesting, authentic and NOT overrated upscale Chinese restaurants in the city? A place so down home with the homies that it serves not one but TWO dishes with frogs, not to mention plenty of innards like kidney? What to get? Everything but the photogenic thin-sliced pork belly app, which was too dry and rather flavorless without the garlic chili sauce (which was too watery anyway). The thin-fried stinky tofu, on the other hand, was a delight...except it was served with the same garlic chili sauce, and I really wish they'd served it with pickled vegetables and garlic soy sauce or something more traditional. But it was stinky, fermented and pungent, just the way I like it! The Steamed Fish Fillet with Tofu and Chopped Red Chili Sauce melted in our mouths. The Mapo Tofu was one of the better ones I've had. The Hunan Fried Rice was generously stuffed with vegetables. And the Braised Frogs with Chopped Red Chilis was an explosion of flavor, though the frog pieces were pretty bony. I'm surprised by the comments about bad service, as we had quick, attentive service throughout the meal. Granted, we came at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon and the place was pretty empty. But I do need to give extra praise for the service: A member of our group was very picky, fussy, difficult, and ignorant about Chinese food (let's just say, I didn't choose for them to come). The server who took our order had the patience of an ox for dealing with her 10+ minutes of ignorant questions and insane demands. So thank you, kind server, for not treating us less after all that.

In my mind, Atlas Kitchen can do no wrong. I've been here 4 times and left very happy (and full) every time. The interior is clean and relatively spacious. Prices are very fair too! Some of my menu standouts: Crispy Whole Fish w/ Green Pepper: A must-order for me. The fish is very flavorful throughout and the meat inside is so tender. Yum! Sautéed Sliced Beef w/ Cilantro: This dish has been served to me hot and cold. When it's cold, its incredible- so refreshing and light! Sautéed Eggplant w/ Salted Egg Yolk: Incredible and so flavorful!! The savory egg yolk paired with the soft eggplant... Wow.. Braised Fish Fillet w/ Chinese Sauerkraut: Great for sharing and the tart flavor really comes out! This was a bit spicier than I expected but tolerable.

Deep Fried Squid in Spiced Salt Chicken w/ Red Dried Chili
    Amy L.

When the best part of the meal was how nice the interior decor and cutlery of the place is, you know the food and service were mediocre at best. We came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and the place wasn't very busy at the time but service was still quite slow. It took them a while to help us order and the food also came out pretty slowly. The three of us shared a ham and cabbage soup, spicy stir-fry pork belly with peppers, chicken in chili oil, and salt and pepper squid. The best thing we had was probably the soup- it had a deep and rich pork broth and was sooo comforting on a cold day. I know ham and cabbage soup doesn't sound so appetizing but Try it! The pork belly was a little over cooked, and the squid and chicken were pretty average. Portion sizes were decent. I honestly prefer Szechuan Garden a few minutes away for similar food. Overall the food wasn't bad but service could be a lot better.

I really wanted to give this visit 5 stars after reading raving reviews online and hearing the creator was a fellow Columbia alum. However, this meal was a series of misadventures... I have to say that the decor was absolutely gorgeous and well-maintained. The seats were comfortable but in COVID times, I didn't expect all diners to be seated right next to eachother in one corner of the restaurant. Why weren't we spaced out? Thankfully, the diners after us asked to be spaced out so that we would not be eating right on top of one another. Another note about COVID precautions...our waiter did not take our temperatures or have us fill out contact tracing forms...However, when the owner entered the restaurant, every patron was asked for these things. Why wasn't this consistent? I was excited to try the fish in sweet and sour sauce--a delicacy I enjoy at other Szechuan restaurants. However, I was informed they were out of it. A bummer, but I moved on. But I did overhear other patrons asking for other items that were also not available...I feel like if the extensive menu was so limited, they should have updated it. We ordered many dishes (as depicted in the pictures). Most were aesthetically pleasing, perfectly spicy, and very tasty. That being said, when we ordered from our waiter, my guest asked that our appetizers be brought out before our main meals--something I didn't think needed to be clarified. But apparently it did...because our main dishes came before our appetizers so by the time we tried most of it, it was cold. Also, the pork belly tasted a little off. I have to give credit to the owner who came over right away and apologized for that. That is a lot more than I can say about our waiter who NEVER came to check on us after he brought the food... Which would be disappointing but what made it worse was that he never brought an item we ordered and it ended up on our check at the end. This was in addition to the pork belly that was said to be comped. If I had not checked, I would have been charged for both. The owner did immediately come over and offered a discount which I appreciated. Despite most of the food being tasty, the service leaves a lot to be desired. The owner was sweet but he should not have to be the only one providing good service. I can only imagine how bad it is when he is not around.

My friend had the chicken dumplings. He said they were okay. I thought they were overcooked. My steamed shrimp shumai were fine, but steamed, they didn't have much flavour. The edamame, on the other hand, had way too much when it should have almost none. I don't know if it was excess salt, MSG or something else, but not good. I should have sent them back. The pacing of the meal for the quantity of food received seemed very rushed, and we didn't really have a chance to relax and enjoy any of the courses. However, the quality of the experience was a complete disaster particularly for the price. Clearly, the packed restaurant would disagree, but for the four of us anyway, we would not return. It started with the check in process at what felt like a long hotel front desk with multiple, self important hosts and hostesses overseeing your entrance to the cavernous bar/waiting area. One problem is the noise is so deafening that you can't really hear what they say to you but we check in a few minutes early and waited obediently in the bar area chatting. After about 30 minutes (15 after our reservation time), and watching numerous parties large and small who arrived after us be seated by the hostesses wandering through the dimly lit space who peer quizzically and ask your name, my husband went to ask for an update. (We joked that those vibrating lighted buzzers alerting when your table was ready would have been super helpful, but it was amusing to watch while we waited). It was clear they somehow lost track of us as she had him repeatedly spell our (not unusual) name. Anyway, after that, within 10 minutes after that we were taken downstairs to our seats (but not before standing awkwardly in the large dining area near packed tables waiting while our table was cleaned). Server with a heavy accent was kind and mostly helpful so none of this is on him. The busser who managed to spill half a pitcher of cold water on my husband's back, soaking his shirt and jacket and barely apologizing, is a whole other story. We managed to get a glass of his mediocre Cabernet comped for the experience. If I sound annoyed, I guess I still am. I had high hopes for a fun and tasty experience in a cool part of the city and it just wasn't.
