I had a Texas privet next to a fence that had grown to be too big for the space and needed to be removed. I do a lot of my own yard work but the trunk was much too thick for me to be able to cut down with a hand saw. I called Santa Cruz Tree Service on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday morning Larry came out to look at the job and give me a price, and Wednesday afternoon he cut the tree down and hauled away the pieces. Disappointed. In all fairness I never got to experience this service because he flaked out twice in coming to my home to check the work that needed to be done. He must have so much work that he doesn't care when he wastes potential clients time. Overall very flaky and doesn't even have a good excuse to not show up when he was supposed to. I would not recommend this company. Make sure to check out the hidden reviews on Yelp as well. Larry and his crew did an excellent job at a house that I manage. Lots of overgrowth, big cedars, etc. The trees were skillfully trimmed, and really look very good now! The crew showed up Saturday at 9am on a flexible schedule, we left the date open ended for the weekend. This is a family run business, we met two of the children and their friendly dogs. Consisting of an experienced 3 man crew, they got right to work. We have a huge old growth Cypress that was in serious need of some tlc. They were able to trim the tree right up in a clean and efficient manner. They also did a great job with the clean up that they did not charge extra for. All around a great job. Our only quibble being we did not receive a bid after asking twice. This was a necessary step for us since we were applying for a grant from the city. read more

A branch fell from a large tree in our backyard, so we had to scramble to find a tree service. Based on the positive reviews here, we went with Santa Cruz Tree Service. Larry came out that day to give us a bid and said he could do the work the next day. Answered our questions about the health of the tree, asked him if he thought it needed any other work, and he recommended thinning out the canopy. Great! He gave us what we considered a reasonable bid for the limb removal and the canopy work. Due to our own schedule conflicts, we had him come out two days later, and he said he'd be there at 10am. Fast forward to that day at 11am, and we hadn't seen or heard from Larry. So we called him, he said he was delayed at another job and wouldn't be out until the afternoon, about 2 or 3pm. Asked him if he'd be able to still get all of the work done, and he said yes. We waited around until 4:30 when he shows up (again, no phone calls to say he's running late or anything), and of course we express our displeasure. He tells us he won't be able to do the canopy work that day, only the limb removal, that the job he was at the customers kept adding on things to do. We were in a bind, though, so we had him just do the limb removal and told him point blank that we'll be hiring someone else to do the rest of the work. He didn't seem to be bothered by this at all. The work he and his crew member did was satisfactory, and he did work with us to be able to send the bill to our landlords (instead of having to pay right then and there), but Larry's lack of customer service skills and his handling of the whole situation prompted me to create a Yelp account just to submit a review. Hopefully, I can save someone else (who might read all of the positive reviews) the hassle and frustration that we experienced. Top three reasons we will be telling our friends and neighbors NOT to use Santa Cruz Tree Service: 1. No communication when he's running late (at any time--*I* had to contact *him*). 2. Letting another customer "add on work" when he already had another customer (me!) waiting (I mean, really, how hard is to tell said customer, "Sorry, but I already have another job booked for today. I'll have to schedule you another day."?). 3. Showing no remorse or caring whatsoever when his customers express dissatisfaction with his service. read more

I emailed Larry late Monday night about the removal of 4 sugar gum trees in our front yard. He called me first thing Tuesday morning, and was at my house to give me an estimate Tuesday afternoon (10 minutes early!). We decided to go ahead with SC Tree Service, so called Wednesday to set up the job, they arrived Thursday morning, and by afternoon the trees were gone, all of their stumps (and other old stumps in our yard!) were ground up (and cleaned up by Larry and his colleague!)- it's like the trees were never here! The price was definitely fair, and the work that was done was super high quality. The next time we have any tree needs, we know who we will be calling! read more

This is the second time I used Santa Cruz tree service to do tree removal and again I was very pleased with the experience. Larry came the following day after I called for a quote, his quote was in line with my expectations. He and Dean arrived the next morning got to the job at hand and as promised they completed the job in the time estimated. They left the property cleaned up and the job completed as promised. Unfortunately I will not even get a chance to review this company's work...I spoke with Larry on 8/13 at 5:26 pm regarding getting an estimate for a tree removal and grinding two stumps down...Larry stated he had to give a quote in Capitola and would see me later that night...I was really surprised he was willing to work that late to come to my house to give a quote...I agreed and shifted some stuff around so I could be home when Larry arrived....Needless to say, Larry never showed....Not even the courtesy to call and let me know that he was not coming...It is now 10:50 on 8/14 and I still have not heard from Larry....VERY UNPROFESSIONAL....If this is how he works his business, he won't be around very long....I noticed I am not the first person to post a review with this exact issue with this business....Wonder how many others experienced the same problem and did not post a review.......Needless to say, I will not be recommending Santa Cruz Tree Service to anybody.... read more

I would recommend SC Tree Service. Larry, the owner, responded right away to my request for a bid and they started work a day later. His crew was friendly, efficient and knowledgable. It was a somewhat rainy day on the day of the job so I expected they would cancel, but instead they worked through the weather conditions without hesitation. They were very good at the clean up of all the debris and made certain of my complete satisfaction. read more

I see everyone is getting great experiences from these guys, which confuses me. We asked to have three trees cut down and the branches chipped. Larry arrived on the day of execution to remove them. First of all, he forgot tools and needed to borrow them from us. He was extremely sarcastic and unprofessional to myself and my son on top of it. A job that he quoted taking one day then turned into three, he cut my fence down without asking so he could get closer and then didn't replace it. He then showed up unannounced on day 4 finally after the job was done, and scared my step-son because he didn't say what he wanted and just showed up. I highly do not recommend this company, as they acted unprofessionally, uncalled for and were not great at their job. A three day long endeavor later and they receive 2 stars. read more

I would not hire this company again. While the job they did trimming the trees was fine, they left a horrible mess when they were finished. Also, I had to fight for three weeks to get a receipt. The owner, Larry, is quite rude and unresponsive. read more

Larry responded promptly to our request for a quote and gave a fair price to remove a large dead tree from our property. He and his teammate were professional, cautious, and took extra care to make sure not to damage our hot tub and patio furniture. Less than a star::::Avoid this tree service at all cost. Larry and his crew had no sense of personal property that they were working on. They put gear down on sensitive plants and dented decks with heavy gear. No consideration for the plants and surrounding follage and garden under the tree he was working on. This resulted in broken plants and a wooden arche in the yard . Worst of all when shown the damages Larry engaged in a heated confrontation with myself. I felt very threatend. This is inexcusable, unprofessional and absolutley inappropriate.. The tree was cut but the yard was not raked and damaged. Avoid!!! read more

I was having major problems with my beautiful old tree, with leaves covered in brown spots and continually dropping off-After a recommendation from a neighbor I called Larry-He injected the tree, solved all of the problems, and then returned to thin and shape it for me. Santa Cruz Tree Service did a great job shaping a mature Stone Pine tree that was growing out of control. Instead of telling me that I should remove the tree (which another tree service did), he told me that it was a healthy tree The tree looks great. Larry took responsibility for the fact that he broke a tile in our tile roof during trimming and came back to replace it (once we found a pile of extra tiles under our house). I felt I was getting expert advice and good service. I highly recommend Santa Cruz Tree Service. read more
