We've been getting take-out from Atami regularly since Akita closed in Clarks Summit. (I believe that Akita relocated to the Shoppes at Montage. Presumably, it's the same ownership, but I'm not sure if they have carried over the same menu.) The things that I liked about Akita are the same things that keep bringing us back to Atami, including a few rolls that we really like, as well as a very friendly staff. They remodeled the dining room recently, and it looks good. My only complaint there is that there is just one door that opens right into the dining room, and it gets cold inside during the winter when there's a lot of traffic in and out. Constructing a second door inside as a buffer to the cold would be a great idea, albeit an expensive upgrade. No big deal for us, as we've only eaten in once. I like the rainbow, lady in red, ying yang, optimistic and zen rolls in particular. Hibachi shrimp and vegetable hibachi are also very good. The main issue with Atami is that the food is inconsistent at times, as it was at Akita: Really good when they're on, and not so great other times. Example: We ordered take out this week, and had a bunch of rolls that we've had before. On this particular visit, on of the rolls that we got was the optimistic roll, which comes with sesame, wasabi and avocado sauces. Both the wasabi and avocado sauces, which are normally a nice compliment to the roll, where inedibly acidic and possibly had gone bad. They tasted entirely different than they'd been any time before. I was home already, so nothing to do at that point but throw the sauces out. The roll itself was good. The size of the rolls varies a bit from one time to the next. This week, one roll clearly appeared smaller that we've gotten many times in the past, but still ok. I think a little bit more attention to consistency and quality control would help them out a lot. I like the fact that they post weekly specials on their Facebook page, including w/pics and descriptions. Again, the staff is very friendly here, too. A good place that could be even better with a few small adjustments. read more

(Vegetarian so I can't comment on the fish) The tempura vegetable roll is SO GOOD. Must try. All the ingredients are fresh and they also have beer and wine now. The food is great and staff is attentive. The vegetable fried rice is also really good! Personal recommendation: the Tsingtao beer- a little nutty and malty and goes great with the crisp flavors of the sushi. read more

Red white hot sushi special - cucumber, avocado, topped with tuna and white tuna, jalapeño, cilantro, and spicy sauce. Overall, the roll was a little wet, i.e. too much sauce and the rice not sticky enough, and lacked a little flavor. Probably really good for the area, given limited choices for sushi. read more

We've gotten take out here a few times. Everytime it is excellent. We have ordered most of the items on the menu, so I won't go into too much detail. I will just say that I have loved everything that I have ever purchased and even things that I did not purchase, as they sometimes throw in an edamame app in the bag for free. In addition, the people here are some of the nicest people that you would ever want to meet. Being from Long Island, my boyfriend and I were spoiled with endless options of great food from many ethnicities. Atami felt like having a piece of that again; I never thought I would find respectable sushi in the area. Everything was fresh, delicious, and well prepared. I enjoyed the Zen roll... if you like to try new special rolls, the cilantro added a nice dimension. The broth of their udon soup was deeply flavorful and not overly salted. Dinner bento box was the most generous portion we've ever had. We also appreciated the fact that the tempura items were not greasy like some places often are. (Thumbs up on the proper fry.) Went here a few months ago with my friend and really loved it here! We went for lunch and the place wasn't bustling with customers, so it's nice if you're looking for a quality, laid-back environment. The interior was clean and the waitresses were very kind. I had been new to the sushi scene when I had gone, so I tested the waters with their tempura vegetable roll and California roll, and branched out a little bit with their raw salmon roll; all three were delicious! Atami Sushi was awesome! I took my girlfriend there for Valentines day and really enjoyed it. Food- Food was well priced for sushi. And it also tasted great! Ive honestly spent more money at other sushi bars and those did not taste as good as Atami. They have a wide selection of sushi as well! Service- They were really busy on Valentines day, so it took them a while to get to us. But once our waiter did he was very helpful. He answered all of our questions and was good at checking up on us through out the meal. The cashier who cashed us out was also very nice! Atmosphere- Unlike many other Asian food places, Atami was very clean. I don't just mean in terms of grunge. Many Asian places have a plethora of "art" scattered throughout their restaurants. You can't be serious. For the first time in my life I left half the plate of sashimi uneaten. The fish here, while not rotten, was certainly not fresh. The pieces look like they were refrozen and rethawed a couple times. And most pieces actually tasted fishy (the only reason I like sashimi but not fish in general is that they don't taste "fishy") I had to stop eating because I was feeling nauseus. Even the grilled calamari, wife and I were fairly certain they boiled the calamari and just seared the side to make it look grilled. The calamari itself tasted bland from not being fresh, and the lack of flavor was covered up with sauce that's too sweet, too salty, and too much So here you go, one of the worst japanese restaurant I've had in my memory. My husband and I got take out from this place while visiting friends in PA. The staff was very friendly and our food came out super fast. We only had to wait about 10 minutes for being walk-ins. We got a dragon roll, a shrimp tempura roll, hibachi chicken and hibachi NY strip steak. The hibachis both came with salads, onion soup, two shrimp, veggies and fried rice. We also got some edamame. Needless to say, it was a TON of food as the portions were ample. The food was all cooked really well and I LOVED the fried rice. We were only a little disappointed that there wasn't any yum yum sauce with the hibachi. My husband also felt that his dragon roll was a little bland, however my tempura roll was full of flavor. The sashimi appetizer was fresh and tasty and a good mix. The ginger and wasabi had a great bite, too, and everything overall seemed clean. I also got a spider roll and cucumber roll, once again everything was fresh and yummy. My mother had hibachi chicken and shrimp and she said it was amazing, as well as the rice that came with it. We also got vegetable tempura and while it was delicious, I wish we had gotten more for the $7 it cost. But it was still super good so I can't complain too much. It's May and they still have a couple Christmas and Valentine's Day decorations up, but it's cute and the restaurant is very clean from what I saw. We came on a Wednesday evening and found the place to be almost empty. The staff was prompt and attentive. We ordered Lobster & Scallops, but received Shrimp as well. We ate here on a ski weekend, which also happened to be Valentine's Day. The staff were friendly and attentive-out waitress was very sweet. We ordered several different things to share and all of them were quite good! Another unexpected nicety was the portion sizes, which were ample - especially for sushi! Greeted and seated immediately ... well it wasn't too busy for a Saturday evening but that was fine with us. Throughout the visit, service was very good. (Later, we observed that they did a big takeout business, which explains the modest in house crowd in what is a pretty big place. ) Decor is forgettable but clean. Nice privacy in comfortable sized booths that could use re-padding. Don't go for the ambiance, but don't avoid the place just because it's in the modest shopping center. (Parking is abundant and convenient, including OK H/C access...the lot is sometimes crowded with shoppers, so drop off at the door may sometimes be better). The food and service were worth it. Or if you prefer ...do take out if nothing else works for you. Our first visit we were quite pleased overall. We aren't sushi fans, in part for personal allergies to certain ingredients when uncooked, so we ordered two Hibachi entrees...chicken and shrimp/scallops...and enjoyed both. They came with soup, salad, (complimentary) appetizer. Excellent food and service. I've been here too many times to count, and have had too many dishes to list, but every one has been outstanding. In my opinion, the best sushi in Lackawanna and Luzerne County. The hibachi is good too, it's always cooked exactly as ordered the first time, and the meat/seafood is of the highest quality. I'm going to estimate I've been here about 25 times and it's been out of this world every time. The prices are very fair too, considering the quality of the products they use. Everything is the absolute freshest quality I have had. I usually go for the Dragon roll but i experiment every time I visit and I have yet to be disappointed. The edamame is excellent and if you want a little spice before your main meal the spicy whitefish appetizer is incredible. Prices are great and lunch specials and dinner combos are available. Speciality rolls defer day to day and are always amazing. The spicy tuna is one of my must haves and the combos come with salad and soup. The food here can be hit or miss. The first time I ever went was with my sister and we ordered a sushi platter to share. Our waitress was rudely shocked and tried to discourage us from ordering it because it was "too much." We did anyway and it was a disappointment. The sushi was flavorless and warm making the texture gross. The second time was amazing. Sushi was cold, the raw fish had a great consistency, not too mushy and not too firm. Appetizers were great and I left satisfied. The third time was average. My seaweed salad was delicious and it came out quickly. Our sushi was room temperature bordering on warm, again causing the raw fish to have the most disgusting texture. Sushi was lacking on the flavor as well. Other than my first time the staff has always been friendly and accommodating. I love how you get items on the house each time you go, it is definitely a nice treat before your meal.
