My husband and I got take out from this place while visiting friends in PA. The staff was very friendly and our food came out super fast. We only had to wait about 10 minutes for being walk-ins. We got a dragon roll, a shrimp tempura roll, hibachi chicken and hibachi NY strip steak. The hibachis both came with salads, onion soup, two shrimp, veggies and fried rice. We also got some edamame. Needless to say, it was a TON of food as the portions were ample. The food was all cooked really well and I LOVED the fried rice. We were only a little disappointed that there wasn't any yum yum sauce with the hibachi. My husband also felt that his dragon roll was a little bland, however my tempura roll was full of flavor. Although it is a bit pricey, they give you a huge amount of food. We couldn't finish it in one sitting. I think it would have been also better had we ate in rather than do takeout. read more

We came on a Wednesday evening and found the place to be almost empty. The staff was prompt and attentive. We ordered Lobster & Scallops, but received Shrimp as well. Also ordered Hibachi NY Strip steak. Overall, the food was very good....but it was also a lot more salty than necessary. We'll probably return, but we'll definitely ask for less salt. read more

We've gotten take out here a few times. Everytime it is excellent. We have ordered most of the items on the menu, so I won't go into too much detail. I will just say that I have loved everything that I have ever purchased and even things that I did not purchase, as they sometimes throw in an edamame app in the bag for free. You can't be serious. For the first time in my life I left half the plate of sashimi uneaten. The fish here, while not rotten, was certainly not fresh. The pieces look like they were refrozen and rethawed a couple times. And most pieces actually tasted fishy (the only reason I like sashimi but not fish in general is that they don't taste "fishy") I had to stop eating because I was feeling nauseus. Even the grilled calamari, wife and I were fairly certain they boiled the calamari and just seared the side to make it look grilled. The calamari itself tasted bland from not being fresh, and the lack of flavor was covered up with sauce that's too sweet, too salty, and too much So here you go, one of the worst japanese restaurant I've had in my memory. Atami Sushi was awesome! I took my girlfriend there for Valentines day and really enjoyed it. Food- Food was well priced for sushi. And it also tasted great! Ive honestly spent more money at other sushi bars and those did not taste as good as Atami. They have a wide selection of sushi as well! Service- They were really busy on Valentines day, so it took them a while to get to us. But once our waiter did he was very helpful. He answered all of our questions and was good at checking up on us through out the meal. The cashier who cashed us out was also very nice! Atmosphere- Unlike many other Asian food places, Atami was very clean. I don't just mean in terms of grunge. Many Asian places have a plethora of "art" scattered throughout their restaurants. Being from Long Island, my boyfriend and I were spoiled with endless options of great food from many ethnicities. Atami felt like having a piece of that again; I never thought I would find respectable sushi in the area. Everything was fresh, delicious, and well prepared. I enjoyed the Zen roll... if you like to try new special rolls, the cilantro added a nice dimension. The broth of their udon soup was deeply flavorful and not overly salted. Dinner bento box was the most generous portion we've ever had. We also appreciated the fact that the tempura items were not greasy like some places often are. (Thumbs up on the proper fry.) The sashimi appetizer was fresh and tasty and a good mix. The ginger and wasabi had a great bite, too, and everything overall seemed clean. I also got a spider roll and cucumber roll, once again everything was fresh and yummy. My mother had hibachi chicken and shrimp and she said it was amazing, as well as the rice that came with it. We also got vegetable tempura and while it was delicious, I wish we had gotten more for the $7 it cost. But it was still super good so I can't complain too much. It's May and they still have a couple Christmas and Valentine's Day decorations up, but it's cute and the restaurant is very clean from what I saw. We ate here on a ski weekend, which also happened to be Valentine's Day. The staff were friendly and attentive-out waitress was very sweet. Excellent food and service. I've been here too many times to count, and have had too many dishes to list, but every one has been outstanding. In my opinion, the best sushi in Lackawanna and Luzerne County. The hibachi is good too, it's always cooked exactly as ordered the first time, and the meat/seafood is of the highest quality. The place is immaculate. Attentive, friendly, efficient, service. Quality ingredients, and excellent food. I'm going to estimate I've been here about 25 times and it's been out of this world every time. The prices are very fair too, considering the quality of the products they use. The food here can be hit or miss. The first time I ever went was with my sister and we ordered a sushi platter to share. Our waitress was rudely shocked and tried to discourage us from ordering it because it was "too much." We did anyway and it was a disappointment. The sushi was flavorless and warm making the texture gross. The second time was amazing. Sushi was cold, the raw fish had a great consistency, not too mushy and not too firm. Appetizers were great and I left satisfied. The third time was average. My seaweed salad was delicious and it came out quickly. Our sushi was room temperature bordering on warm, again causing the raw fish to have the most disgusting texture. Sushi was lacking on the flavor as well. Other than my first time the staff has always been friendly and accommodating. I love how you get items on the house each time you go, it is definitely a nice treat before your meal. Every single on the house item that I have gotten has been delicious. If this place was more consistent and kept their fish cold, I would give it five stars. read more

(Later, we observed that they did a big takeout business, which explains the modest in house crowd in what is a pretty big place. ) Decor is forgettable but clean. Best sushi in the area! The people who work here are some of the nicest you will meet and the food is incredible. Strictly a sushi bar and dining area Atami sets the bar for this area. Everything is the absolute freshest quality I have had. I usually go for the Dragon roll but i experiment every time I visit and I have yet to be disappointed. The edamame is excellent and if you want a little spice before your main meal the spicy whitefish appetizer is incredible. Prices are great and lunch specials and dinner combos are available. Speciality rolls defer day to day and are always amazing. The spicy tuna is one of my must haves and the combos come with salad and soup. When we eat at Japanese restaurants, we usually order a mix of sushi and sashimi. For some reason, when we visited here, we ordered only rolls--their specials for the day. They gave us edamame appetizer on the house that we enjoyed and we loved all of their rolls (we ordered four specials). The rolls were fresh and the combination of flavors was great and unique (I've never had a spicy banana tempura roll before). The shumai is okay, the tempura ice cream okay, and I had some issue reading the "Atami Sushi" letters/name on their establishment that's why we almost missed it even though we used a GPS.
