Terrible organization. Cable is provided in my HOA fees. RCN decided that they installed cable boxes that were different than what the HOA pays for. No way of me to know that. They sent bills to my old address, blocked my service and held me hostage until I paid. Filing a complaint with BBB and taking them to small claims. Avoid if at all possible. read more

If I could give RCN negative stars, I would. I have had 8 different cables companies while moving....and I have NEVER had as many problems with my service. Each time my cable goes out I have to wait a week to get someone to come fix it, and guess what it takes them 2 minutes to fix. WHY CAN'T THEY GET THERE SOONER? I just moved into a building with RCN, and had a technician come on moving day and set everything up and it was fine. The next day the internet stops working. First they say it must be our modem, then they tell us we're part of a large outage. The next day they tell us we weren't part of the outage and need a new modem, but when I go in and exchange the modem for a new one, we have the exact same issue when I plug it in. I have now been without home internet for a week, despite surprisingly high quality cable the entire time. If they come and somehow it turns out to be my fault (not likely), I'll update this review, but since I can't get a technician out for at least 4 days, I might forget. read more

This is the worst experience I've ever had with a business. I got a yelp account just to rate RCN. 1. Auto pay doesn't work, or send you confirmation. I had to sign up 3 times and pay late fees because I missed bills in the mail, thinking I was on autopay. Also, their late fees are ridiculous. 2. My bills were extremely inconsistent one month being $60, one being $80, supposed to be $30. 4. When I returned my modem I recieved a bill for returning it. Had to call and switch it to a refund not a bill. I yelled on the phone at someone. I have never yelled on the phone before. read more

Beware-RCN charges enormously for non-equipment returns. We recently moved states and hadn't gotten a chance to return our box. Turns out they deducted $574 from our checking account. Not only that, but once we do return the equipment it's said that it will take 2-3 weeks to re-debit our account. Never have I ever seen a company deduct money directly from a checking account rather than collect through billing statements. Do yourselves a favor and ditch the cable tv networks. read more

previously was WOW - called several times to take advantage of being new - I was told NOTHING was available to existing customers. This past week, I was down for a week, today the tech fixed everything and told me to call for a credit. The girl Kelli-Anne was very helpful however, my phone was disconnected and she left 2 messages to call back but someone else would have to help me-she also stated that all the information was in my account as notes and my bill would be lower- frustrating cause I called several times to do just this but was happy something was being addressed by this nice gal. I just called back and the girl, barely could hear her, told me that this was wrong information and if I exchanged my equipment to Astound, the bill would be higher - I am already paying over $250/mo with NO movie channels. We have had great experience with rcn. Account creation was simple and set up was a breeze. The tech came out during the allotted time and any issue we have experienced so far (only 1 and not their fault), customer service was attentive and helpful. Services used were Internet and cable including TiVo. We got a great rate, much better than competitors, and didn't have to sign a stupid contract to get it. If you need cable/internet, would definitely try rcn first before the other providers. Dropping one star due to the fact we are moving and our new location is "unserviceable" despite being a 1.5 miles away. read more

RCN is one of the sketchiest companies I have worked with in Chicago. List of grievances: 1) The telephone number on their website is disconnected 2) There is no option for "cancel service" on their customer home-page 3) Their "cancel service" 1800 number is closed on weekends. 4) The service man who installed the cable box came 4 hours late, at 9 pm on a Thursday. 5) They have a tiered internet service, which means that if you want fast speed, you got to pay more. Still hate RCN, but thought I'd share what I decided to do as a result. I also wrote this same review under a review for Clear: I tried Clear so I could get rid of my RCN service that I had for two years at $40/mo for just Internet service (which is overpriced, imho). RCN overcharged me month after month in excess of the $40 through autopay even though I told them to stop (total approx $230), hence the attempt to switch to Clear. But, Clear didn't work either. They just couldn't get their act together...and it turns out there's a cheaper alternative: Just as an fyi to those looking for Internet service....I decided to go with AT&T. They have a new customer promotion of $19.95/month for 12 months, and then $40/mo after that for their highest speed (even though their website says it's normally $45). You do have to buy the modem ($75 for just the modem, $100 for a modem/wifi router combo), but then you can take that with you if you move and continue their service in your new location...but, if I'm spending $20 less per month, the modem will pay for itself in about 4 months. And I'll save $160 over the course of the year. That almost kind of makes up for RCN! How nice! :) Also requires that you have a phone jack, but you don't need home phone service. On their site (http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=11523) it says "for more info call 1-800-821-1245 Monday through Friday 8 am to 9 pm, or Saturday 8 am to 4 pm Central." It was very easy for me to get through to someone; he actually picked up the phone! p.s. I'm a grad student & don't work for AT&T. Customer service with RCN sucks balls. And they sure do lie about pricing. Unfortunately, I can't get any other internet/ cable provider with my apartment building and I apparently HAVE TO use RCN. Besides that, the internet speed is pretty good and the cable is fine. My experience with RCN: meh. It's cheap, works moderately well (with the exception of the occasional blackout) and no major complaints. Perhaps RCN isn't as awful when you aren't in a large building? I'm in a four-flat and it works fine. That being said, my roommates and I aren't huge TV people (we have a boob tube) and don't know much about computers. Seems like customers who rely on their cable provider for heavier usage should look elsewhere. read more

Several quick observations: 1. You really cannot complain about their promotional pricing. It's WAY cheaper than Comcast. 2. Picture quality, especially HD, leaves much to be desired. 3. The interactive program guide SUCKS. It's slow and sluggish. 4. Don't even bother with on-demand. read more

Terrible business. First the service offerings suck. I am not that much happier with Ocmcast, but I willl say their customer service was easier to get in touch with. So starting with Customer Service. You get tons of prompts only to be transferred like 6 times for anything and then when and IF you are lucky to reach a person, they tend to transfer you a few times as well. The offerings pale in compairson to Comcast and the roemte sucks for DVR. Why would you put the live button directly above the forward button? As someone is watching precorded shows, when forwarding through, you make it to easy for them to acidentally go back to live tv. This happens way too much to me at least. Most annoying is the bill explanations online are confusing and always see random charges. Also, I transferred service and they made me register online again with all new user info. RCN is the worst company I have ever dealt with. I had to talk to 5 people just to sign up for service and they each told me different things! It was infuriating and after my 5th transfer, I was transferred to voice mail where I had to leave a message describing my issue. If I was not forced to use RCN by Presidential Towers I would have hung up and gone elsewhere for service. When signing up for service, I opted for the self install which meant I would have to pick up the cable box or go pick it up 45 minutes away. I confirmed with the sales rep that I would pick it up and assumed I was all set. Boy was I wrong. After the long drive to the pick up location I was of course informed that they shipped the box to my apartment which I had not yet moved in to. I tried to give them my home address in case this happened but they wouldn't let me do that. So now I was left with the choice of paying for a second box due to their error, or drive another 45 min into the city to check if the box was received. Upon receiving my first bill, I noticed they were charging me for a cable modem rental which I also explicitly confirmed I did not want. I had a cable outage the first week of service. This was on a Wednesday and when I called support I was informed they could send someone out Saturday. But if the cable came back on before then and I didn't cancel the appointment, I would be charged. Screw that, I told them not to do anything and just waited it out. I've had numerous cable/internet providers in numerous cities over the last 30 years and RCN is BY FAR THE WORST COMPANY EVER! Nicest people on the phone and lovely techs, but the equipment constantly fails and the service coming in the apartment is sporadic. I should rarely talk with them, but because of the lousy equipment and service, I have had FAR too many conversations with techs on the phone and in person! If I was not stuck in a contract through my building, I would use ANY other company. Any company is better than RCN! read more

1) Their customer support is awful. I was hung up on twice by their automated system, and placed on hold for nearly 30 minutes by their support staff. 2) DO NOT BELIEVE THEIR INTERNET ACCESS PLANS. What I have found is that they don't deliver anywhere near what they advertise. What do I mean by near? Well, I had 10Mb from them, and I can show when I was getting less than 1. RCN will give you less than 10% of what you pay for, and they'll do it even when you call technical support repeatedly for weeks. At this point, I don't have any confirmation they'll ever fix the problem, their tech support says the "capacity upgrade" has no "estimated delivery date" - which means ... buzz off Chicagoland. They're apparently too busy cashing your checks to actually give you what they ordered. 3) Do you really need much more than 1 + 2 = 3? They have terrible service and delivery. I personally hate Comcast, but will take anything over RCN right now. I've tried to engage them in a conversation repeatedly, but have gotten nothing but a "we have no estimated time of delivery" response from them. Any company which can't deliver on a service they advertise .... should not be advertsing said service. I'll take a bad service over one as dishonest as RCN. read more

So far, so good. It was easy to navigate their site to figure out what plan I wanted. It was easy to order that plan. The person who came to install it was very efficient and personable. He even made the wire look clean and organized, rather than just hooking up the internet in the easiest and fastest way possible. Furthermore, I had to call the company because of a problem I had with the USPS (not RCN's fault). The person I spoke with was efficient and peppy and solved my problem within 5 minutes. All-in-all, it's been a great experience so far. That said, though, it's only been a month. read more

RCN just connected to my condo building and decided to switch from Comcast. I called the person whose name I found on a flyer in my lobby and within 2 hours had all the information I needed, setup my account and was scheduled for installation two days later. Technician showed up, disconnected my Comcast service and set up my new service and equipment in about 45 minutes. The internet appears to be top notch and the picture on my TV is the best I have seen and the price for basic cable, 330 Internet, and a TIVo box is $30 less than I was paying for Comcast Internet alone! read more

So far, so good. I called RCN yesterday to switch from Comcast. The person I spoke to was really kind, extremely helpful and had installer come out the following morning. The installer just left and he too was nice, helpful, on time and fast. Now I'm paying half as much as I paid for Comcast, I have HD channels that actually work (unlike Comcast) and even the non-HD picture quality is 10x better than crappy Comcast. So far internet speeds are rockin. We'll see how things pan out over the next few months. Good riddance to Comcast. read more

Horrid company. Yes their service works great but canceling service is a horrid experience. We moved to a city that they don't server and had service cancelled June 28th (We called on May 15th to have it cancelled which is ample notice.). The cut it off right on the 28th at midnight and returned the modem on the 30th. Then they billed us for service for July. I called to tell them to give us our money back because we are not paying for July since we did not have service. They said they have to bill us because they did not disconnect the service until July 2nd. I said absolutely not! We did not have service after the end of the 27th and we want our money back. Woman was completely unhelpful. 2nd call my spouce called on speakerphone with me in the room. We were told we would get our money back in a few days. Okay fine. 3rd call almost 2 weeks later. The charges were not reveresed and were told to wait a few more days because what they did was credit for future service......They don't serve Philadelphia (only the suburbs.) That's useless.. This is the last fine "okay". Now we were refunded a little over $5 out of $45ish just for the modem. We are going to dispute the charges with our credit card. Even during the pandemic when everyone was streaming far more than they normally would - my service at 1gig down was extremely reliable. Spotty wifi so they "offered" to let me pay for the eero booster. First month free; $9.99/month thereafter. It helped, but certainly not to the degree I expected. And really, why should I pay even more to get the wifi you promised me when I first signed up? So called to have the eero removed. And guess what? RCN wants me to uninstall it, print out a FedEx label, and drop it off. Um, no. Your product didn't work and you want me to go to this trouble? What if I don't have a printer? What if I don't have a car? I asked them to uninstall and pick it up and the customer service rep said sure, they could do that. For $49. Are you kidding me? You keep selling me products that don't work and you want me to pay to remove them? On top of it the customer service rep was curt, unhelpful, and unapologetic. So I'm buying my own wifi mesh system which should do the trick. Using it primarily to research how to cut the cord altogether. Until then, one more incident with RCN and I'm back to Comcast. At least they don't use 20 year old Tivos. read more

BEWARE!!! This company will falsely charge you for equipment returned to them when switching to a different carrier/moving!!!! I had moved to Chicago in which the apartment building requires us to carry RCN. Service was fine however when I moved out of Chicago I sent back the pieces of equipment I had rented (TiVo, eero, etc). Come to find out I have a balance of about $350 that I supposedly owe because they had not received a few items when receiving my shipment. I had contacted them asking they check their warehouse again because all of the equipment they say were not included in the shipment were all in the box. They said they would look into it and get back to me and sure enough, no one reaches out with any information. I did this twice more, opening up a case file after the fact and still no follow up. They claim they never found the items? This is clearly a mistake on the warehouse's end and I should not have to pay for someone else's mistake. Do not recommend this company at all! read more

Do not be fooled by saving $10-$15 a month with an introductory promotion - RCN has inconsistent service, poorly trained customer reps and technicians, and will screw you once you sign up. They are worse than COMCAST because their service sucks - at least with COMCAST you have more likelihood that it will actually work. Specifically, their phone service did not work and despite two service appointments and 6 hours of waiting for their technicians. Then, when I called and canceled my phone service they informed me that my new cable and internet cost would actually be INCREASING because I no longer had a bundle. So, now I am down to BASIC CABLE CHANNELS and their slowest internet for $95 a month!! Not to mentioned an hour or so out of my day driving to return their faulty equipment or I would be charged for it; after all this time and money, I have to take time out of my day to drive to return THEIR faulty equipment!!! RCN is a frustrating waste of time and money - period. I wished I never switched from COMCAST (at least their service works). read more

Sadly this company is essentially a big scam. Customers are roped in with their introductory pricing for it to go up $10 a month the second year, and $30 more the third year. Why even bother being a loyal customer when it costs more to do so? I went from paying $65 a month to $106 a month in less than 3 years... is that not insane? When I call to ask about the additional charges, the service reps just say "your discount ended." and offer no help, meanwhile offering new customers $49.99 a month for what they are charging me $106 for. If you can charge people $49.99, then anything else is a lie and a scam. We are not paying for the product we are getting, we are paying for not wanting to switch companies every year. Sadly it looks like I need to switch back to comcast (also a scam imo) because there are no other options in my area. Something that is a necessity in 2022 should not make you go broke. Poor business model and customer service that deceives you as their full time job. Would not recommend. I have to give a hat tip to RCN on recent work. My cable modem would gradually slow down and stop working over the course of a day, always fixed by power-cycling it. I got RCN to send a tech out to replace it, and all better. What's most interesting is that two days later, he stopped back by, apparently on his own, to ask if things were working! While the price isn't amazing (though as good as anyone else), it's been solid reliable service (TV, Internet, phone), other than this break -- which they went above and beyond to fix. read more

RCN definitely has its pros and cons. Pros: 1. Cheaper than comcast/SBC. They offer internet, phone, and cable. 2. Decent actual service - I personally never had anything go wrong. Cons: 1. Weird customer service. Sometimes they were awesome, and sometimes I wondered how the rep made it out of the 4th grade. 2. Weird service area - you can only get them if you live in certain parts of the city. I had a decent experience overall. It's nice to be able to cancel and not have fees or anything. They are a scam! I returned all of my equipment and they are saying a piece was missing however they don't have any pictures or proof. They charged me $78 for the item. I know I sent everything back. I asked to call the local center directly where it was shipped to so they can verify it but they won't give me their number to call. If you are cancelling your service and returning the equipment, take pictures of everything in the box! read more
