I have a Cable/Internet package, the only reason I have the cable package is because it was a required bundle with the internet package I needed. The channels are the standard public-access channels with a handful of additional channels. While it originally appeared as the cost-effective option, in the future I would factor in the host of price and fee increases that you will face with RCN. I would give zero if I could. For the life of me I cannot figure out why my building chose RCN (probably cost-related). If you talk to 100 different employees, you will get 100 different answers/explanations. Our cable service is TERRIBLE; constantly pixelated on the main channels. One employee told us it was because we had stainless steel appliances in our kitchen (oh, so, when the TV works it must be the days we remove our kitchen appliances - duh???!) We have had RCN for two years in our current place. We have incessant problems with the internet going out or inexplicably slowing down. Whenever we have taken the issue to RCN (and managed to wait long enough to talk to someone), they claim it is our new router, our new new router, the router we bought from BestBuy (why don't you rent one from RCN?), the fact that the RCN-rented router is in the middle bedroom, and so on. I'm not sure what they will say this time when I call, but I'll tell you this - once I get through the hour long wait for a representative, I'm going to tell them to take an effing hike. When I sit down to do work at 9:00 at night, I need my internet to work. And half the time it doesn't. Been a loyal customer for 6+ years, but when Bank of America had a security breach and cancelled my card, I got slammed with declined auto pay fees. Apparently, it will take two billing cycles for my new auto pay to kick in, and I may have managed to switch my service by then. The person I talked to on the phone was incredibly unhelpful and when I told her my connection had gotten really slow she offered to sell me a higher speed, but couldn't tell me how much it would cost. She put me on hold to investigate and eventually came back to tell me I would need to hold longer. Is that salesmanship? I told her it sounded like a simple thing to look into and she said, "it sounds like it, but it's not." After years with this company, and this is how I'm treated. Customer service hell. This service is an absolute nightmare. I have lived in my new apartment for two months. I tried using comcast but they said my entire building is wired for RCN only and I have no choice but to use it. I have had five service outages already in the two months I have used their service. I work from home two days a week and these outages last four, five days in a row. There is no customer service in an outage, you won't get a representative on the line at all, it is an automated system that hangs up and doesn't forward you to a person. The texting "customer service" is AI that just provides you with there is a service outage and doesn't have any time line to provide when it will be fixed. They offer a callback service, which actually doesn't call back. The last time the service went out, I called after two days post service "being restored" and they let me know it is supposed to be common knowledge that I needed to reset my router when they restored service. Service just doesn't restore automatically. Finally today, I called through billing and waited 30 minutes to speak to a supervisor (they said the wait time would be two minutes) and when I finally got into contact with the supervisor and explained this pure hell they have put me through these past two months, They provided the same update, letting me know "oh wow, that's a really big outage there's no other information we can give you." They didn't explain why so many outages, why they are so unreliable, or why their customer service doesn't exist. And yet? Here I am. RCN almost derailed my graduation. When it truly is crunch-time for certain people, RCN thinks their internet service is a game. When I had to finish my portfolio and upload things, the "switch" would go off on my internet instantly. Sometimes, the internet would not turn back on for days at a time. There is a reason why RCN only costs $30. (I paid $44, you lucky bastards.) Poor service, unacceptable attitude from RCN's call center workers, who casually repeat everything you tell them and offer no viable solutions. Not to mention that technicians are usually unavailable/booked for 4 days. Excuse me, but Comcast has same-day service, and aren't they offering a $30 deal for new customers? Another thing: Power cycling really doesn't work, it might be a made-up problem that RCN falls back on when you call them, I wouldn't doubt it, because RCN has always misinformed me, from my billing statements to incorrectly charging me for technician visits (in total, I had 7 tech. visits and 3 different modems in the span of 8 months, with almost $100 in erroneous charges). When I called to cancel my internet service, I was quoted 3 DIFFERENT prices for their "cancellation" fee. Ultimately, I negotiated the price down to $50 to sever ties with this dirty company. RCN isn't just bad, it's scary bad. There were many times where when I realized the internet was working, I would stop whatever I was doing and do as much as I could get done, work/school/entertainment-wise before the internet went out again. RCN credited some of those instances, but having to call every single time, waiting at least 5-10 minutes to talk to someone in billing and having this happen dozens of times is truly a nightmare. If AT&T can gobble up T-Mobile with the latest cell phone merger, can they also take RCN and rid the world of this pure waste of an internet company? read more

The only reason I have this service is due to my rental building having a contract with them. I spoke with a Kim at customer service today in regards to my bill, and instead of her trying to properly explain the reason for the influx ( like the second person I spoke to after I called back) she HUNG UP ON ME. Kim was VERY rude to me and this company needs to fire HER pull that tape! As far as the service it is good for what it is but they are always changing my bill and it always has something to do with a package that has expired. I know cable companies can ALWAYS rebundle the package but after being hung up on I REFUSE to beg you to do so. Customer service is is PISS POOR! WORST customer service experience!! The world would be a better place without RCN. CONSTANT INTERNET PROBLEMS. My roommate and I had to unplug everything from the router and plug it back in several times a day to get the internet to work. I gave RCN 2 weeks in advance when I moved to give them my new address so they could mail me the shipping sticker to place on my box to mail the cable box back to the company (I didn't have a car so driving it there myself wasn't an option). However I waited weeks and weeks and it never came. I called about 5 times, every time they kept using my old address and I had to correct them - however THEY NEVER PUT MY NEW ADDRESS IN THE SYSTEM. One day I received a collections notice for the amount of the cable box, and finally I just borrowed a friend's car and drove it to the company's drop-off location. I was told everything was square and that I was all set. Fast forward 6 months when I receive another collections notice telling me that they reported it to the credit reporting agencies. Called customer service several times to figure out why I still owed them money. They never mailed me my last bill...or anything else in the past 6 months. I argued for hours on the phone with these people and no one helped me get my credit squared away - even though they had the power to take it off. I NOW HAVE BAD CREDIT BECAUSE OF THIS COMPANY. Had I received any of the bills they supposedly sent, I would have just paid it right away. After reviewing all the internet providers in my area, obviously it's a very grim picture. But then I realized I HAD to get RCN through my building. The RCN instant help chat on the website is fantastic. The people over there are very responsive and don't sound like robots. They also gave me a code for free installation-- saving me a one-time fee of $50. THANK YOU! Since it's not possible to give RCN 0 stars, I'll have to settle with 1 (but they get 0!). I subscribed to RCN's VOIP after being given a deal for $15 /month. This included local and long distance which was a better price point than the Vonage I already had. I received a prorated statement for the first month that included a $12 charge for the phone service and approximately $10 in taxes in fees. Considering the high amount, I contacted the RCN customer service dept. The agent seemed pretty clueless in terms of why I thought there was a problem (i.e. nearly 100% tax/fees compared to the cost of the service). She indicated it should be better for the next bill (which didn't make any sense - but I figured, who knows, maybe there is some adjustment being done for the next bill). Giving the benefit of the doubt, I waited for the 2nd bill (while keeping Vonage active for another month in the meantime). After receiving the 2nd statement (which now included $22 in taxes and fees on a $15 product!!), I determined I was going to cancel the RCN VOIP and called RCN once again. Prior to doing so, I reviewed the FCC website for appropriate telecom taxes as well as the City of Chicago and State of Illinois websites. According to the FCC, the Federal Subscriber Line Charge fee - which RCN charges - isn't required to be paid to the US Govt. Of course, RCN indicated incorrectly that is WAS a required fee. Nope. They choose to charge what they like. They told me they wouldn't waive or adjust the fee. FYI, Vonage doesn't charge the fee. The Federal Excise tax is a charge on local calls. Of course, I didn't have any calls and still had a tax charge. Even if applied to my service rate, the calculation was wrong. The rep in PA couldn't explain that. Also, City of Chicago requires a charge of $2.50 for E911. RCN charged $5.00 (again in error in due to negligence). Vonage charges $2.50 appropriately. The RCN rep of course said, Vonage is either doing it wrong or plays by different rules. Nope. I'll note one additional area (there are many more though) where I believe that RCN is flat out wrong in what they charge. They charge a Simplified Municipal Telecom Tax. This is for DSL charges. They are not selling DSL, yet indicated the charge is appropriate. Vonage, again, does not charge this. All told, RCN is charging me approximately $17 more than I believe they should be able to in Taxes and Fees. Their reps (although I understand aren't versed in Taxes per se) are clueless and should be able to explain why certain fees are at least being charged (without towing the "we are required to charge it" line). Unfortunately, their cable is still cheaper than Comcast, but now the Tivo boxes (about 1.5 months old) freeze and restart just when I'm getting settled in to watch something. That's another 15 minute boot up!! Needless to say, one more cable botch up and DirecTv I'll be a calling. Well, the botching has been ratcheted up. So, DirecTv will be installed on Saturday along with ATT uverse for internet. Bye RCN. ----- Updated 5/23/14 Well, although the RCN cable said bye bye, we ended up sticking with their internet (after some additional haggling and price reduction to match new customer pricing). There is a reason why RCN is cheap. Most of their techs have no clue how to solve the problem once they get onsite. The communication between departments is seriously lacking ... When I asked for certain services to be done on the workorder, the technician came and claimed that he had no idea that all of those things needed to be done. If you have lots of time on your hands, go ahead and go with RCN. As long as the service is up, I had no problems. When there's an outage, however, if power-cycling your modem doesn't solve your problem, hope and pray that either tech support is able to help you, or you get a good technician. Can you believe that an RCN technician actually hung up on me once??? I'm not sure whether to laugh or be upset. Oh well, that's RCN for you. If you don't mind not having the channel you want to watch then this service is PERFECT. I may be one of the few, proud, Americans that has had zero issues with customer service. Honestly, never been transferred to another worker for any reason. As for the G & B: Good: relatively cheap for what you get vs. what you pay for, decent customer service, and decent technicians. Bad: HD channels rarely work from day to day, On Demand menu loads like old people hump, On Demand rarely works, Internet goes down EVERY day, and an overall terrible channel lineup without purchasing a ton of add-ons. There really isn't a choice for many people to switch to so everyone seems to be stuck choosing the lesser of two evils. In that case, I'll take RCN's Attila over Comcast's Hitler any day. read more

I wish there was a zero stars option... RCN is by far the worst cable/internet provider in Chicago. I had issues with my cable the ENTIRE year I had service with them and was having to make calls to their technicians nearly every week for awhile until I finally gave up. I had no other cable options in the building I was living in and seriously considered getting rid of cable all together and using something like Hulu or Apple TV as I was so frustrated and fed up with the company. I had to power cycle my cable box EVERY single time I turned my tv on in order to watch tv. Technicians who were supposed to come to switch out the box or fix the service didn't show up multiple times after I had rearranged my schedule to stay home for them. Aside from the product being poor, their customer service was absolutely awful. Honestly, having to deal with this company in order to have cable/internet service was a big factor in deciding not to renew my lease at a particular building. I though Comcast had issues, but it was seriously NOTHING compared to everything I had to go through with RCN. Highly highly recommend staying away from this company. read more

I had such hopes that you would be able to save us from the Comcast monopoly when my building started offering your services as an alternative. Instead things have just turned into a debacle. Ordering a PPV event and having it not work on the HD feed, being told to order the SD feed, and spending two months arguing to have the duplicate PPV charge removed was a fun exercise in negotiation. For months now I have been unable to access VOD more than 1/4 of the time, including a VOD package I paid for every month. Sure sometimes it decides to work if you reset the cable box, but even then only for a little while. Of course, since the VOD offerings are so sparse it doesn't matter too much. I do enjoy the DVR randomly erasing saved programs, since it makes life spontaneous when your plans for watching saved episodes of The Office are upended by having 2 week gaps in the list of programs. Sure, the internet is spotty and likes to just stop working every few hours, but that's probably just RCN's way of encouraging us to disconnect and be in touch with the world around us. But then today they messed with my NFL. In September I bought the NFL RedZone package for the season. Today I went online to remove an unrelated programming package. As soon as I hit Submit, suddenly my NFL RedZone disappeared. After 45 minutes on hold I got someone who told me that the system recorded me as disconnecting my NFL RedZone. Appeals to common sense, asking why I would disconnect this product that was already paid for, not surprisingly failed. I was told it could be reconnected for a fee of $39.99 which I could then appeal to the billing dept. to have removed. Well, that's the last straw. I will live without it for this week. As soon as any promo deals I have with RCN are expired I will be immediately discontinuing service. Sure Comcast isn't perfect, but they at least have a lot of offerings. If I didn't know better I would think Comcast owns RCN and operates it this way so that former Comcast customers will be grateful to go back to Comcast after suffering through RCN's "service". read more

Worst cable provider ever. Yea that doesn't mean much since all of them suck, but if there was a floor for cable service, RCN crashes through it and hits the Earth's core. How can anyone miss an appointment with a 3 hour window? Multiple times? And of course when the technician finally shows up it's not his fault since he's "just a contractor." Does this company think everyone who wants cable just sits around at home all day during the week from 8-5? Apparently they do. And why do all of their customer service reps have the IQ of a toddler? I would have gladly switched to Comcast and started paying. It would have been the lesser of two evils. It seems as though their 800# is only a local number to be used in the midwest area. Since many people these days rely on their cell phones as their sole line, it would seem logical to expand their # to not just the mid-west. Without warning RCN changed its email format to a less desirable one. When I called to give feedback the agent said she had received other calls about this and staff were not notified the change was coming either. This is really poor customer service. Sometimes it speeds upto 30 mbps. but when I need the most it really sucks...In middle of my crucial work, it goes below 0.1 mbps and does'nt pick up even after one day. I moved to RCN, thinking they were the lesser of two evils compared to Xfinity/Comcast. For about a year, I was right, even though I'm no fan of the Tivo interface they use. The couple times I've had to call customer service, they are johnny-on-the-spot with answering the phone. Fast forward to the last week, when a series of unfortunate events happened in quick succession: my credit card, which was used to pay the RCN bill, was compromised. The CC company was fantastic, changed the account number immediately and shipped me a new card. In the meantime, I changed my billing with RCN to direct debit from my bank account. RCN charged my old card instead. Since I didn't have a new number, they charged the old card. Unfortunate in and of itself; but when I called to figure out why there was both a processed payment on 9/12 followed by a bill due by 9/15 that's $25 more, I was faced with a less than wonderful or helpful person that I can only identify as "Quondra". Quondra explained that I owed them the $25 for a returned payment. I explained that the payment was returned because the card was compromised; she in turn explained that's not their fault, and I "have to see things from their point of view." I also explained I changed my billing to go to my checking account; she counter-explained that can take up to two billing cycles and I still owe the $25 returned payment fee -- that again was due solely to some piece of work out there stealing my credit card number. So RCN will charge you for your credit card being stolen if they're billing to that card. Good business practice! Because a credit card number being stolen isn't stressful enough. I explained that they're going to lose a customer over $25. Quondra thanked me for calling and for being a customer for a year. I wish I could make this kind of thing up. Turns out I can get over 2x the data speed (300M vs. RCN's 110M) and the full lineup of channels (including all premium and all movie channels!) for about $20 less on a three year contract with Xfinity....and the X1 platform wins hands-down comparatively anyway. So I guess I do owe them a "thank you" for making me shop around. Xfinity will be here Saturday morning to install. Worst customer service in my history! I am not a customer to complain too much, but I had it with these people! Where to start? I chose RCN for price and initially it seemed painless to get their cable and internet services set up. Granted I had an appointment during a bad snow storm, but I called before leaving work early to confirm they were still coming. After hours and hours of waiting, I called again and the technician said he couldn't make it. I scheduled again and the next night he showed up 1.5 hrs after the window of time they gave me and trampled his wet shoes throughout my place to tell me it would take too long to set up that evening. I could go on and on about the telephone customer service. No one answering the phone has the power to do anything!!! All they do is apologize. I got promised a phone call back from a manager and days later they call. Needless to say I backed out on their services. DON'T DO IT! After what I went through with Comcast... this company is a God-send. My roommate is in the middle of mid-terms for grad school and Comcast scheduled and was a complete no-show for two installation appointments. I added RCN service online on a Monday night and was able to schedule installation for the next day. The technician was super fast and efficient (even though it was an irritating job that included running cables every which way around the building). I did call to confirm the appointment (comcast had me paranoid) and didn't have to wait more than a minute or so to get a hole of anyone. The package was better than the one offered by comcast for the same price and installation was only $34. So far so good with the internet connection. Maybe in the future service will suck... but right now, they are not comcast, and that right there is worth all the stars in the world. read more

I have their internet. The service is terrible, and the phone menu is awful to navigate-it takes a minimum of 7 minutes to speak to a real human. My horror story: The internet went out on a Saturday. Monday I sat on hold for 10 minutes and finally set up an appointment for them to come by and fix it on Wednesday, sometime during a 3-hour window in the middle of the workday. If I'm not there, they charge me $50. If the internet fixes itself the day or hours before, and I don't cancel the appointment, they fine me $50. But, they won't refund me the 6 days of internet I've been without. Great, right? I will be switching as soon as I live in a building that doesn't have an exclusive contract with them. read more

I have had RCN for several years now. The prices for internet are the best in the area. I am paying 49.99 for 110 megabytes. I do not use them for cable. I have had internet issues three times in three years. One time a squirrel chewed my cable. Another was a model needing replacement and the third I have no idea, but it got fixed shortly. I have never had any issues with customer service. I have had nothing but easy to talk to people who were happy to help me. I never had to get fiesty at all. Lastly, I always pull my paid for speed. Always. Never had a time when I was under 5 mb below what I was paying for, even during prime time. You can even save money by getting your own model. I would highly recommend them as the best internet provider in Chicago hands down. read more

I'll undoubtedly rate RCN zero if that would be possible. It feels like this company is always trying to find ways to squeeze money from customers at every available opportunity. I've been using RCN for a year ($56.5 total). $14 modem rental and 155MB internet bundle at $39.99 only for the price to increase form $39.99 to $49.99 a year later bring the total to $71. I complained and was told the $39.99 (155MB internet package was for a one year promotional period). I requested my internet package to be downgraded and was put on a 50MB internet package at a cost of $33.99 at a total monthly cost of $59.54 including a $14 modem rental and taxes. I bought my own modem (at $40) in other to get rid of the $14 modem rental fee which I've been paying for a year, only for RCN to come back a day later with a new pricing of $41 for the ($33.99 downgraded 50MB internet package which I signed up for a day earlier. I believe it's all because I decided to opt out of the $14 modem rental fee. It's like this company is always trying to find a way to extort you of every single dollar in anyway possible. It's totally ridiculous. Be very careful when dealing with RCN. The service is riddled with numerous hidden charges. Don't even stay away, run instead if you know what's best for you.. read more

RCN has been nothing but a pain in my you know what ever since I switched to them in July. I was promised certain prices by a salesman (trusting a sales person was my first mistake) and then nothing was the same cost as indicated. We received a special package price in our building, but myself (and every single other person I spoke to who switched) have had billing issues since. It is now December and some of these issues have been resolved (only after asking to speak with a manager several times) but I am still paying $30 a month more than I was promised, and at this point, I am just tired of arguing. In addition, I was set-up with Tivo, a feature I never requested or wanted, and was told that to receive the cheaper price, I need to return the Tivo and exchange it for the correct box & set-up the equipment myself. I work full-time and you would think that since this wasn't my error to begin with, the technician would come and switch them out for me. Until I make the switch and set the correct box up, I am SOL and will continue paying the $30 extra a month for TiVo. The internet and cable service is the same as Comcast's, but the customer service is worse (never thought I would hear myself say that). The cost is identical - even after Comcast's hike in price after the contract is up. Save yourself the trouble and stick with comcast or ATT. I've had RCN in one form or another since moving to Chicago in mid-2013. Since then, I've gone back and forth between having just internet and having a cable/internet package. My problems have been extremely minimal and are not foreign to any internet/cable provider (outages, equipment mishaps, etc). The biggest pro of choosing RCN is not having a contract. It's allowed me to have flexibility to adjust my services based on my income and expenses at the time. It allowed me to switch cable providers when I found a cheaper option and to return when the cheaper option became more expensive after a certain amount of time. I typically only communicate with customer service through online chat and I'd recommend that to anyone. I've never been online with a rep for more than 15 minutes and my problems are always resolved. Their social media is quick to respond when it comes to outage issues and their techs are always on time if not available early. I'm sincerely grateful for the cancelling services process that has never felt like it had with Comcast. Despite being urged once to keep services, they accept no as your answer and process your request. Cancelling services is difficult with any company because employees are trained to keep business, but it should not be impossible. My only consistent complaint is how often the packages change in price for new customers. It's always frustrating to see new customers being offered a 50% lower price for an extremely better option when you've been a customer for multiple years at a higher price. Most new customers at any business receive a better deal than current customers, but it's still a little disheartening. read more

WORST SERVICE PROVIDER EVER. I am so sick of dealing with this company and canNOT wait to never use them again. My building requires all of us to use RCN. They are overpriced, not helpful, horrible at customer service and absolutely frustrating. I have had problems for over a month. Needed my system updated because my internet was running ridiculously slow. When the technician finally made it out to me, he neglected to bring a ROUTER for my internet and then told me that even if he had brought one, I would be charged extra each month for it. WHY? I am not purchasing anything new, I am keeping my plan and it's THEIR system that was outdated and performing slow. I hate this company and will NEVER EVER recommend ANYONE to use them. Furthermore, I came home one night to find that ALL of my channels on my cable said NO DATA in the guide and were not working. When I called.. there was no mass outage, there were no problems with my bill, RCN just didn't have a quality signal and they needed to reset my box. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? This is not something that we, as consumers, should have to deal with regularly. This same instance has happened AT LEAST THREE times within the last six months. Save your money and time. RCN is NOT a good company to use for internet/cable. I would give them zero stars but that isn't an option. read more

Not much of an Internet provider. The connection in my area sucks or the technician who installed it in my apartment clearly did a not so great job. Ever since July, when installed at my new place, it has not been up to par. Their customer service is less than helpful either - both telephone and their live chat. I am going to rethink my services with them quite soon. read more

The worst service I've ever encountered. So incredibly frustrating. I pay for increased service, TiVo (who still uses this?!?), and a premium channel package. My service constantly cuts out, Internet is slow and can barely keep up with basic internet tasks let alone Netflix and streaming. Worst of all, RCN customer Service is some of the worst I've ever encountered. They make Comcast look like angels from heaven. Anytime you call to inquire how to make Service better, cause you know if I'm paying for service I'd at least like to use it, they give an answer of "must just be your location". Zero help.
