If i could, I would give RCN negative stars. Avoid using RCN at all costs. I had multiple issues with there customer service throughout the two years I was with them. The only reason I had them was because my apartment building did not allow any other cable/internet providers in the building, which I found unfair, but thats a different story. Some of the issues I encountered were: getting the wrong cable box installed; getting the wrong programming when installed; having to pay a penalty to upgrade my service; getting an unauthorized debit on my bank account from RCN for $650. To top it off on that last one, they didn't want to credit my bank account back for the $650 until I jumped through numerous loopholes, and bent down backwards. The more I think of my two year experience with RCN, the more I feel I would have been happier without TV and going to the library for internet instead. read more

RCN is the worst internet provider I have ever used (and I had Comcast for 20 years). In the past 4 months, our internet has gone down 7 or 8 times. The most recent time was this past week, and we've currently been without internet access for 3 days. Customer service can't even confirm if there is an outage or if it's being looked at -- they can only ask us to powercycle the router/modem or book a service appointment for days away. RCN needs to inform users when there are ongoing outages, arm their customer service with more information, and stop charging ridiculous fees every time one of the products they installed breaks (we were charged $50 when a splitter RCN themselves installed broke a year later). read more

Excellent! And WAAAAAY Better than Comcast! I had RCN Internet for 2 years in Chicago. Customer service was very efficient and very pleasant. My internet was set up exactly when they said it would be and it worked with absolutely no problems for all 2 years. I then moved to Evanston for a year where I tried Comcast -- RCN was not available. Comcast was the complete opposite in terms of customer service. Their internet service was pretty good -- although not as good as RCN -- but the customer service was absolutely horrible. I'm now back in Chicago and back with RCN. Again, everything with RCN was seamless and pleasant. Not only is there internet speed faster than Comcast, but their customer service is better than ever. Great job RCN! Based on the other reviews, I suppose that I shouldn't be surprised by the poor experience I've had with RCN installation... which still hasn't happened. Installation was scheduled for Saturday, and I was stood up. No call, no cancelation, nothing. I was told the system was down so they couldn't contact any people with appointments. I find that difficult to believe in 2020, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. It was rescheduled for Tuesday, and again, I was stood up. Then I was told there had been a mixup and they couldn't come out until Friday. This has been incredibly inconvenient, and the chat/phone operators are not available. An automated system keeps telling me to "try back at another time." As a teacher, it is difficult to e-teach during COVID without the internet, and I am disappointed by the limited appt options and poor work-ethic/customer service so far. I will be speaking with my HOA about switching to a different provider. Probably Xfinity. I've had great experiences with Xfinity. I've been a customer for two years and after this third year saw a price hike in my monthly bill. I called to inquire about why the price went up and all they could tell me was that they keep adding to the account price year over year in order to turn a profit even though nothing has changed with the package. I thought I had finally found a tolerable internet provider but I was proved wrong. I'd highly suggest going to a different provider who isn't going to hike up prices every year on loyal customers. read more

Overpriced and poor customer service. Prices are constantly being increased without notice nor improvement in service. Tonight I waited over an hour for a representative to respond in order to address the 25% increase in monthly service fee. The representative had extremely poor customer service and wasn't able to assist me at all. After 7 years of service with this company and dealing with the same issue every year, I'm gladly going to look for another provider that doesn't just jack up the prices by 25% (INSANE) and is able to better assist their clients. Had a very negative expense with their customer service team were I was basically lied to, promised something that never happened and when I called back to see what was going on they said they had record of speaking with me but no record of the promotion what was supposed to be applied to my bill and they would not apply it to the previous bill I was told it would be applied to and could only now apply the promotion to future bills when it was their mistake in the 1st place that it was not applied. Called 3 different times and talked to 3 different people that were not helpful at all. Very disappointed when they've always had such wonderful service, I've been a loyal customer over 5 years, you would think they would take care of me and fix their own mistake. I do not usually complain because I work in retail but this was such a terrible experience, I would not want anyone else to have to experience the same thing. Add on: after posting this on google reviews, Jackie from their customer service team proceeded to reach out to waste more of my time letting me know that they would not be fixing my previous bill. My first impression of RCN was not good. When I moved into my building in 2014 there were lots of flyers promising low rates. I was going to call until I noticed the tiny type at the bottom, "for the first year of a 3-year contract". :o A deliberate attempt at deception - not a company I want to do business with! I've heard a few say their internet is good, but I was so put off by their unethical marketing I never considered them until AT&T tried 2 years in a row to charge me $47 for basic 3 meg service. Both times I got them to reduce it, but I still think I'm paying too much. So I called RCN yesterday to inquire about their promotional rate, and a nice lady listened to my thoughts about greedy internet companies that take advantage, and that I'll never trust RCN because of their sleazy marketing. She told me the total cost with equipment and it's only $3 less than I'm paying AT&T. Is it worth the trouble? I was on the fence until someone called today - a pushy salesman from RCN. He had no knowledge of my feelings about this, only my name and number. Sigh. I suggested management review my remarks from yesterday, and he hung up before I finished speaking. Still sleazy, disrespectful marketing. Then I came here and saw all the bad reviews, and I'm completely sure it's not worth it. I've had awful service with RCN, unfortunately its one of two options offered where I live. My internet is constantly going out, my equipment is brand new and 5g capable. I called RCN today because again my internet was out, unfortunately I died sales instead of technical issues, the person was rude and hung up on me mid sentence. I then tried for many hours to get through to customer service after the automated reset did nothing to fix my internet problems, my calls were disconnectedmultipletimes and the i spend over an hour on hold before giving up. I am a customer of RCN. I live in a condo so We do not have a choice of cable and internet company. The building management company make a contract with RCN. I called RCN to reset my internet password . They helped me with it , but at the end of our conversation the RCN employee askeded " I feel you don't have good speed on your WiFi . Can I come in and look at it'. I said okay. He came in and wiggled with wiring on cable lines. I don't see any difference after he left and I didn't have problem prior to his visit either. Later I get charged for it. For a service that I did not requested . I am not sure if he has done any changes to the service. Now, they keep sending letters that they will dis connect the service if I don't pay for it. I will be charged for the service by the building if they even didconnect. Wow - I have been a RCN customer over 20 years and never received such poor service as I did this morning at the Chicago office. I wanted to replace my remote and the kid said I had to pay for it. I told him the last time I was in i got a free one and since it didn't work I returned it. he responded well you are only allowed one curtesy remote. I said OK so give me a curtesy remote and he said they already did . i replied no I gave it back so you still owe me a curtesy remote. He again replied they gave me a curtesy one. This went on for a bit and I asked to see a supervisor was told not in and was located in Evanston. I said OK lets call him and he wouldn't call and told me it wasn't an issue for a supervisor. I asked him to give me that number and of course he refused. At this point I feel like I have arrived in the middle of a Seinfeld episode. I said you wont give the supervisor info or your name. How about the 800 number and he seriously replied that I could look it up on my own. Ok how about you just give me your name so I can let someone know how insane my experience has been here. And you guessed it, he wouldn't even give me his first name. He said I could Identify him from the receipt, OK then this is from receipt Receipt # 1381606 PAG . i went out to my car got the line and spoke to lovely lady in PA who handled this situation with no problem. When it comes to mailing back equipment RCN stinks! I followed directions and I was informed that some of the equipment May not have been scanned! Is that my problem? Why don't they scan it all when it arrived? I keep getting email that I need to send the equipment! I called 3 times and was polite; they keep saying it may not have been completely scanned. Beware of the idiots who are in receiving Area! I told them I'm not paying the $80. They think I owe. When you cancel service prepare to get a different answer from everyone you talk to. And then prepare to keep getting billed for things after you cancel service. When I canceled the first representative said I was paid up and if I cancelled by a certain date I wouldn't owe anything else. Then I got a bill for $225 and that representative said it was for a prior month. Then they said I owed $54. Now they say I owe $63. I really don't want to pay them anything because I suspect I'm going to continue to receive bills for random things. Say far, far away from them! read more

RCN sucks the least? They have no contracts which is nice and install went good. Service started acting up after 6 months. After 8, yes 8, service calls and new routers they finally determined it was the neighborhood node. The internet went up and down every 20 minutes or so. Making streaming frustrating and my VPN go nuts. This went on for five months. They kept telling me that when it all got fixed they would give me a substantial credit. When it was fixed the customer service rep gave me $35. For eight service calls and five months of interruption. I spoke with his supervisor who repeated no over and over for an hour. I was driving 300 miles at the time and needed something to keep me awake so I played their game. He finally gave up and hung up on me. After an email they gave me another $60 credit. So in short, they treat their customers like crap, like everyone else. But you don't have to worry about a contract. Since they replaced the node things have been better, but it shouldn't have taken so long and they shouldn't have lied and passed the buck to keep me quiet. read more

My internet package is part of a condo building with about 860 units, all of them with RCN cable and internet 250 download speed. My internet has been out for about two weeks now. It went out on Friday the 13th, I called on 14th, technician came on the 15th and confirmed that the problem is a tier problem. Meaning the signals coming through the building were very weak and most probably the wiring in the walls is the culprit because the signals start off strong on the top floor and die out on the way down. There's 29 floors and i'm on the 7th floor. I heard all of the conversation technician was having with his supervisors because he was on speaker and i could tell the supervisors were not taking it seriously and kept telling him to forward the information to someone to look at. The technician left my unit saying RCN needs to fix the wiring or equipment to correct the signal issue and his supervisors should follow up on this to schedule a tier repair. On the 16th which is Monday, I called RCN and they said they sent out a tier repair request at 6 PM. The issue is that the name they said they sent the request to doesn't exist at the condo management office. I called again on Tuesday to see if RCN followed up on their request but they did not. Now Wednesday the 18th is here and I had a person from management office call RCN and schedule the tier repair, which they did for Friday and asked me to be home from 9AM to Noon. I'm home all day Friday and can hear them working but no one comes to my apartment. At 6 PM when i hear them in the hallway, i asked them to take a look at my unit and they do. And they figured out the same thing that the technician a week ago did! So they connected the wires from my apartment differently with wires in the upper floors and i had internet, but only up to 30mbps. They said they will be back on Monday the 23rd to continue working on the tier repair. I saw their van and confirmed with management office that RCN was here but it was one guy instead of the two guys that were fixing it on Friday. They left without completely fixing it and management office said they need to schedule another tier repair. Then on the noon of Tuesday 24th, my internet goes down again. All the lights on the modem were solid but internet signals were too weak to even run a speed test. I called RCN, the tech support did something in the back end and i was back up to 30mbps. Fast forward a few hours, the same thing happened and this time the tech support wasn't able to do anything and I'm without internet again. The tech support scheduled a technician to come out on the 26th to take a look at my internet. We're going in a circle and i couldn't be more frustrated because i work in IT myself and understand these things. The part that sucks is that I can't even use the hotspot of my phone because the building gets terrible cell reception and i used the wifi for calling as well. read more

This company has been nothing but HORRIBLE since the name was changed. The price has jumped $45 in 5 months.. Making a 56.00 bill to an extreme $98.46. We are on a fixed income , so when we make expense decisions, we make sure it is to much. My fiance is legally blind. As a couple we share bills and expenses. Due to the economy today, it has taken a toll on us all. Since the new company Astound took over, the bill climb up seems every month. It saddens me to know that they have the power of our at home entertainment. We have basic cable only. For the bill to continuously go up is terrible. When it was WoW cable, they knew and understood Derrick condition. Usually if any changes occurs, they would call him and confirm changes made on the account. He can not see, so emails do.not work for him. If a set amount per month for bills and unexpectedly a bill go up. Things are altered. Other major bill may not be able to be addressed accordingly. The first few times, the bill went up. I specifically asked, will the bill go up. Answer always no. When I asked why is going up they give a lame excuse of the price increase plus taxes. That's a 4-5%increase in 30 days. Never a supervisor to complain to. . When I asked price decrease. She said if We change your box. Really. ... When they want to charge $47.99 for one TV. Then $10. My 87 year old mother has been without home phone service for over 3 days now, starting on May 4th. I have contacted Astound technical support each day and gotten different responses each time. On day 1 I was told there was an outage in my area and the service would be back up sometime that day. On day 2 I was told by "Dustin" that they were converting Wide Open West customers over to their service and they could not give me an estimated time but that service "should" be back up that day. I asked for a supervisor and was told they were all busy and the supervisor would "Just give the same answer." I insisted and waited 15-20 minutes only to be told they were still all busy. I then asked to be connected to whomever could cancel my account. After another wait, I was connected to the "Business" customer support who could not handle a residential account. They then attempted to transfer me and hung up on me. On day 3 I was told that they have no idea when the service will be restored and have no further information. I again asked to talk to whomever could handle cancelation of the account and was told that no changes can be made to any accounts at this time and they are locked out of the system. They said they will issue a credit for the days of no service. At this point we are stuck with no recourse. I am a computer professional with 30+ years dealing with the likes of AT&T, Comcast, etc. If this is a small sample of Astound/RCN's attitude toward customers, stay away from this company. read more

I am a new RCN customer since June 2017 and I have loved the Tivo experience. Coming from DirecTV I was concerned that RCN wouldn't live up to the "big guys" but have been pleasantly surprised by their video service. I also purchase their 1 GB data and the prices versus Comcast are excellent. Highly recommend! read more

Have had rcn for years. Apparently they don't like long term customers. They have jacked my bill for internet from 68 up to 82 per month. Just for internet service. They are fast for sure, but if you have an option go with anyone but them. I am disabled, wife lost her job because of all this covid bullcrap. I got no notice and my son comes downstairs and says hey Dad, no internet. So I must say they suck! My bill went up and when you call and ask why they tell you it is because you aree not a new customer anymore so the deals are not available to you. Then they disconnect our service in the middle of all this crap. Yeah, if you can get anyone else trust me and go with the alternatives. There customer service is crap, there business etiquette is crap, only their internet speed is good. And tbh we have the upgraded 110mbps, and it isn't much faster than the 55mbps. I had no problems with RCN until I moved out of the state and needed to cancel my service. Their customer service was AWFUL! Not only did I think it was shady that they made me mail my cable and internet box back after I got a letter in the mail letting me know all of the charges I would get if it came back damaged. The worse part was about a month after I ended my service I got a $50.00 bill in the mail because I ended my services 10 days early! 10 DAYS! When I was going through all of the hassle of canceling they NEVER ONCE told me about this charge or that my contract was actually up in 10 days and it would be smart to wait. I NEVER once was late on any of my bills and my equipment returned with no problems but since I said "Yes" a year ago to a third party contract and didn't wait 10 days, I was charge. Unbelievable! I had RCN for the Internet several years ago. When I got it they installed it on the north side of my 2 flat. Then a house was built on the north side and the builders fenced off access to my building. I COULD have access if all I did was call the owners. In addition, later a tenant moved in downstairs and got RCN for Internet and cable. However RCN got disconnected in a windstorm and the tenant and I called RCN. It took them several days to come out, BUT THEY DIDN'T TELL ME THEY HAD COME. When I followed up they informed us that they would (future tense) have to call an upper level of management, and IT WOULD TAKE 2 WEEKS to fix my problem. My question was why didn't they just go ahead and do that and then inform me, rather than having us call and find out they they weren't even working on it? I had had RCN about 5 years and my downstairs tenant had it too. They could have afforded to reinstall it on the south side of my building, especially in light of the fact that I could just cancel. Their customer service clearly does not consider customer retention. At this point the tenant and I cancelled internet and she cancelled her cable TV, too. She went without cable and I changed to AT&T internet provider with her sharing wirelessly. So, due to total lack of communication and TOTAL disinterest in my account RCN lost what could have been 2 good accounts. To this date no one in my 2 flat has RCN. (updated 1/18/14) read more

I have had a great experience so far with RCN. I had heard horror stories about them, like MOST cable companies these days, but so far so good! When I moved into my current place in May, I called to set up the cable - making an appointment and creating a username/password was a breeze. The customer service rep was great and she walked me through all the options, and ultimately ended up with a great package at a reasonable price, in my opinion. The installation guy came and had issues with setup but luckily was able to do a quick fix to finish the installation in one visit. He was super helpful! I receive the same amount on my bill every month (a huge plus as I have had major issues with unforeseen costs with other cable providers) and although you can't pay online, having the app on my phone helps with paying the bill - without extra charges like paying over the phone - if I am traveling and want to go ahead and pay it. I've called a few times and every time the customer service rep is helpful and very nice. From my experience, I would recommend. Although the layout on the television is rather outdated in my opinion. read more

Our two TV's stopped working on a Sunday night. RCN sept a technician on Monday morning. It was a difficult problem related to a TIVO malfunction. The technician, James O'Toole( not sue of spelling) was knowledgeable, professional, answered our many questions, patient. Our problem was solved after several different work around. In my 7 th decade, I've experienced many, many service representatives. James really stood out for his behavior and competence. We considered switching back to Service Electric but were impressed with the service and high competence of RCN's phone manner, service accessibility, and technicians like James ( as well as the performance and range of channels we have with RCN.) read more

They are very deceptive in their billing. Their package seems affordable, but you'd end up paying sooo much extra for their Network maintenance fees & some other municipal surcharge. Since the new year, they have decided to pad their bottom line some more and increased this "maintenance fee." Ooh if you try to pay via your bill credit card, expect to pay an additional $1. I really had high hopes for RCN and was excited at the prospect of saving some money by switching over from Comcast. Right from the first phone call that took my order to the final phone call when I complained about the incorrect final bill, the people were pleasant. But pleasant customer service doesn't make up for the horrible quality of the service. I'm not quite sure if it's the people who are hired or the systems they are using or a combo of both. When I ordered my service I was given a first time user discount. However, that discount wasn't applied on my first bill and this is where the problems started. I was instructed to pay the amount I owed including the discount and that the next bill would include the discount and everything would work out. Well, the discount was not applied and I was charged a late fee. Fast forward to me having called in too many times to explain my situation. I pay my "late charges" and ask to schedule my service to be terminated in 7 days. Always pleasant, they enter in my last service date one week in advance. My service terminates that day while I'm working. I call up and explain the error on their part and again they are very pleasant and apologize for the issue and tell me they can't just turn my service back on; the system will not let them do that. So, they have to create a new order (more expensive now of course) and schedule my termination; take two. Okay, so after all of that I was finally free of RCN. Woo hoo! Not so fast, I get a new bill for the month of January; I had cancelled my service in December. That's odd. So, I call RCN again to inquire about this bill for service that I had cancelled the previous month. Well wouldn't you know it, the technician (it's always the technicians fault, right?) who was in charge of turning off the service never actually turned off the service which somehow triggered the system to think I was still a customer and bill me. Alright, the always pleasant RCN customer service rep once again figured out the issue and finally cancelled my service once and for all. I have no other option but to believe them. They promise that they will talk to their manager to credit the final bill. The next bill I receive is for over $300. Well by now, I'm pretty accustomed to this routine. It turns out what I really owe is $21.37. Me and the rep walk through each of my bills and when we arrive at the second to last bill, I inquire how I can owe money when that bill said I was owed $.54. Turns out that was a good question. They credit the $21 and now I'm owed $.23. Okay, so now I'm wondering how many other customers out there are dealing with these similar types of issues? Hundreds or thousands? read more

The tech promised me a manager would call later that day to arrange another higher-level tech visit. No call. No response to emails. RCN tech support did get better for awhile, however, it's collapsed again. If you have a problem, you now have to talk to "customer service/tech support" people who aren't allowed to do anything but reset modems and send out techs. You will have to talk to a new one each time, so expect to start over from scratch every time. Each day, my high speed internet line goes down in the evening. And each time I have to start over again with someone who "apologizes for my inconvenience" and tells me to reset my modem. Then they want to send out another tech contractor. At one point they sent out a tech who found water in the coax, yes, inside the insultation in the coax. He replaced all the coax between the pole and the modem and my RCN 155 mbps worked perfectly for two weeks. Then we had a huge thunder storm and it started going down nearly every day again, intermittent as ever. I've had at least 4 techs at the house already. They check levels and tell me its fine. I say, of course its fine, intermittent problems are always fine until they fail! One of them even got RCN to send out a line crew to check the tap. The line crew checked the levels, said they were fine and left! I asked if anyone found my water in the line. They told me I was nuts, nobody was told to check for that! The levels are fine. If RCN won't listen to their own techs, how can they possibly listen to their customers. These fiber-coax hybrid systems need reliable wires. First th good. The people at RCN try hard. They offer good customer service and attempt to do right by the customer. Now the bad. If you order internet service from RCN, expect it to be unstable. There will be significant speed loss through the day and periods of latency. Don't bother paying for premium speeds because it will consistently underperform what you're paying for. I never ever write a review for anything but I am so upset with their service , its10:32pm right now and I'm calling tomorrow to cancel and switch to another company . Internet keeps dropping !!! I had 300 something mb and I called and they said it was my modem so they dropped it to 100 , YET CHARGING ME THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY PER MONTH !, I told to myself to be patient and try it since the customer service representative was really nice , she said it was my modem even though my modem says it handles more than 350 mb ... I have been trying the 100 and still drops man !!!! What horrible service !!! What's the point of having WiFi at home if my internet on my phone works better and it's way faster than my WiFi ?! Worst service ever. I am forced to use rcn because I live in a high rise and my bldg has a contract with them. If you have the option, AVOID RCN like the plague. There is always problems with the service, the 800 number is useless and its next to impossible to speak with an actual person and the appointments are always late. I have been a customer for 18-years. I have never experienced the issues that so many have raised in their reviews. We have RCN Cable at our business and I can honestly say that I cannot remember it ever going down. Over 18-years, I have had just one price increase and the new rate is well below other providers that I have experienced at my home. At my home (and home office) I replaced AT&T with gig speed internet. I did have one outage over the past year that was caused by storm damage in the area. BTW, I pay less for my gig speed internet than I was paying for AT&T 16-meg that NEVER tested out at 16-meg, not even once. I had a lot more trouble with AT&T than I have had with RCN, a lot. I have notice that many of these negative reviews are based on customer service during a pandemic. Also a time when every business I know of is short staffed for a verity of reasons, mostly COVID. I'm writing this as I prepare to order gig speed internet, from RCN, for our business, again replacing AT&T. Our AT&T service crashes almost weekly. The only reason I have waited this long is that I need to make the switch during our slow time, just in case. Overall, I have saved a bundle and expect to save another bundle after we switch. Trying to get cable service from Xfinity. Somehow RCN has a lock on my box and I'm getting different answers from RCN on how to get access to my own box. Again RCN internet fees sharp increase! As I returned from a month away, rate went from $43 to $57 or $$684 a year just to get condo url service. Must be a better feel than RCN. read more
