I've dealt with some rude people before, but RCN techs are the rudest. Have a problem and call the support line? You'll get the runaround. I had a connection problem. I called. They said that my computer must have a virus. After a few more calls, they dispatched their "experts." I spoke to the experts, who after three tries finally fixed the problem -- they'd just screwed up my connection. They literally told me that the people on the phone line will try to get rid of you as quickly as possible, hoping you won't call back. Avoid this company if you're smart. After signing up for a great promotional price over the phone I was so excited to get away from Comcast and Verizon. The salesman was very helpful and seemed genuinely interested in getting me a good deal. After the tech came to install I was even more impressed, as he was great and offered me an upgrade from the stock DVR to a TIVO box for only $3 more per month, another "promo price for new customers". Low and behold when the first bill comes my verbal agreement with the tech had broken me out of my promo price, so I was up another $30 more per month. The reps I spoke to over the phone told me there was nothing they could do and they couldn't even find my original promo price, and repeatedly talked over me and implied that TIVO service was more expensive for them to provide than their regular DVR service. Same thing with the chat and email representatives I tried to explain it to online. My last email was completely ignored. I work in tech support myself and the customer service I've received from RCN has been atrocious. I would be embarrassed if my company treated our clients this way. From what I've read and heard from other customers my story is pretty standard. The TIVO unit I was spending so much for broke after 3 months and they were "generous" enough to replace it for free, but the new unit looks like it has seen better days, scratches covering the box. My main issue is that the service is good and probably worth what I end up paying compared to the other companies out there. It is just extremely upsetting that they need to result to dirty tricks and ignoring their customers to get the extra money, for which they will spam you with 3-5 calls a day if you are a day over on payment. Been a customer for several years after getting frustrated with poor service from AT&T, then owner of what is now Comcast (that's how long!). Overall, internet speeds and reliability have been good, tech support / customer service _was_ good and picture quality was very good. Like several others, video and audio have always been prone to stuttering. But this has only recently become something I care about. This year, however, I have been experiencing dropouts in service. This is a royal pain in the, um, neck. It seems to happen only when I really need to log into work. To make matters worse, when I called tech support (for 1st time in a couple years), they have apparently gone through some management changes. They are now officially lobotomized. Worse still, they are dishonest about the nature of the problem. They insist on coming to your house to fix problems outside. Then I find out from our neighborhood email list that a bunch of folks are experiencing the same problems. In fact, there is a fairly major outage. When we, en masse, threaten to switch, they finally send someone with a clue to work on our street. Then things are ok for a few months. Until this week. The random outages have started again, Again, tech support has lied about the extent of the problem. Again, several neighbors confirm that they are experiencing the same issues. Again, RCN insists on coming to my house to fix a problem outside. My feeling is that they have gone cheap on network monitoring and maintenance. The system in Arlington is old enough, now, that it is experiencing some equipment failures, etc. Yes, they keep jacking up the price. But, apparently, so does Verizon and Comcast. I wouldn't mind too much if the service was reliable. Clearly they are not spending the money on network maintenance. Picture quality is still very good. Impressed. With a cable company? For real? It's hard not to respect this company. Maybe they had pad publicity and are on their best behavior to make up for it. But I can't say enough about their service and product. We recently moved into Watertown and immediately missed Verizon FIOS. This is because we signed with the other Watertown company that's not Dish Networks. Cable reception was terrible. The supposed 30mbps internet felt more like the DSL service we had before FIOS. The router we rented either had a poorly implemented firewall or was intended to push us to upgrade to business service for anything more than web browsing. It's not that it didn't work; it just didn't work well. At peak times it was terrible, I had to connect to the unsecured external xfinity wifi to do the things that needed the most security. Go figure. We decided to switch to RCN since there was no cost to abandon Comcast. It was a really good decision. RCN's 110mbps is real; I clocked a download from my laptop with wireless WPA2 enabled at 91mbs. They initially installed a Cisco e1200v2 router at no charge and no monthly rental charges. We loved it. But we received a call from RCN a week or so later informing us that we didn't receive the correct router for high speed service. I knew this; the e1200 could only handle 100mbps inbound. There was no way to use the full bandwidth. But it was free so didn't worry about it. I decided to buy my own gigabit router to replace it. I was pretty surprised that a cable company called us to tell us that they were providing a free equipment upgrade. It's a 600N gigabit router. I was a bit surprised but in a good way. On the day of the install, the installer was late. We called RCN; they apologized and told us they would apply a $20 credit to our next bill. They did this on their own. I was impressed again. Last week I realized that the TIVO Mini DVR they provide showed up on my phone as an alternative to my Google Chromecast device. I could send Youtube videos to the TV without switching inputs. But I found out this week that Netflix wasn't enabled, just YouTube. Then. Last night, RCN announced that next Monday, they will provide Netflix through the TIVO box as long as we have a Netflix subscription. Goodbye Chromecast. RCN is a hidden gem when I think back about the really bad experiences I've had with other providers. I can't say that their customer service is as bad as one other review. It's worked for us at least. Unlike Comcast, they don't fill the system with dumb useless features. Their remote is a TIVO remote and just works. We're paying less than we did with Comcast with a lot more internet speed, a dvcr, high definition TV, and people who for now at least seem to be ready to help. Started to write a long scathing review - but see I have been beat to the punch by many others. Started off as a bundle customer many years ago in Boston. Moved but kept my webmail address. I was happy to pay the $4 / mo to keep it active. Now it appears that after all of these years - my folders are approaching the 5.2 GB of storage you are allotted. I asked if I could purchase more - no. (Who is not trying to sell storage in this day and age?? Really???? ) When asked if they could provide technical assistance or guidance in moving them to a new provider - no. (It is not easy - trust me.) Excellent work RCN. 1) Lose the opportunity to keep a high margin storage customer 2) Make certain they never come back and strongly encourage others to chose another provider. I have paid for phone, cable TV, and internet services from RCN for almost 15 years. I currently pay $250.68 per month. I just noticed that for the same exact services I paid $165.65 in July of 2013. I less than four years they have really increased their charges. I find it total greed. All the cable companies are about the same.......Comcast, Verizon, etc. You tell me some other service that has increased 51% in four years. It will make me look around for alternatives. If I could give a zero, I would. RCN flat out lied to me. I was guaranteed a FINAL rate (that's the total I would be paying each month, after all the taxes, fees, etc, etc, etc) of 105.73, for twelve months. This promise was made by Carolyn Byrne in the "Local Loyalty Team" Five months into that term, they jacked up my rate by $6 by adding totally new "surcharges". I have had many ISPs. ATT, Comcast, Sonic.net (in CA), and RCN. RCN provides my phone and internet service via cable. I don't get any kind of TV service so this note is about their phone and internet only. My main interest was in fast internet that is fast enough to stream HD and to transfer massive multi-100GB files I need for genome work. I got RCN because Verizon FIOS was not available where I live. The DSL speeds are terrible (24Mb in CA with Sonic.net) and I have a deep-seated dislike for Comcast and ATT because they both have bandwidth caps, high prices, and terrible service that forces you to get stuff you don't want. I was a bit afraid of RCN because of bad reviews here, but saw the worst reviews were old and they have no contract so the risk is low. I have to say the experience has been great. I called and got a person right away... at 10pm at night. I signed up quick, got an appointment within 36 hours to install service, and have not had a single glitch since I signed up 2 months ago. WHen I called to set up autopay I got a person right away and they were knowledgeable and pleasant. My Netflix streaming is great, my work downloaded are great, and the thing that led me to write this review was when i got a letter from them today telling me they had doubled my bandwidth both up and down for free. RCN has no bandwidth limits. Why would anybody go with anyone else? Yeah small company! I hope you become the one that crushes Comcast, ATT and Verizon. 20Mb down plus unlimited phone for $58 (total) you cannot beat that and it is not special that will expire in 6 months. read more

When you tell someone that their plan comes with a "three year price assurance", that means that the price would be staying the same for three years, not that it INCREASES every year. I could not stop laughing with the rep on the phone who kept saying "when we say it's a three year price assurance, that means it's based on three-year pricing, and the customer understands that their rate will increase every year." HAHAHAHAHAHA! Really? Well guess what? RCN is dangerous. Watch you credit card. They will over bill you and double bill you. If you call them on it they will give you a total run around, transferring you endlessly and tell you that it was your banks fault and they can send your bank a letter but that will take time. read more

This is the WORST cable company in the business. The cable boxes constantly go out and don't work. The VOD is constantly out and then when you call to try to fix these errors, which happen WEEKLY, they don't listen and do factory resets which leaves you without any cable for AN HOUR just so they can take the easy way out and get back to eating twinkies at their desks instead of helping you. One of the tech was knocking on my door (at 9pm) claiming that he is in the area to install RCN cable, and want to give me some info (first of, if you let your customer wait until 9pm for a installation, you have a lousy service). Before I could response, he tried to force himself into the door. After I repeatedly told him that my account is under contract with Verizon, he's keep asking me why I can't just break the contract. This went back and forth for about 2 mins, I told him there is a contract, he ask me why I can't break it. It was like talking to a 3 years old. Which part of "it;s going to cost me a lot to break the contract" is hard to understand. Then this second guy show up, after he listen to part of that conversation, he whisper into the first guy's hear "he (me) doesn't know what he is talking about", by the way, make sure you actually whisper, and try not to do it in front of the person you are talking about. I was actually thinking about going to RCN after my Verizon contract is up, in about 5 month. But guess what? I just changed my mind. read more

The quality of the service is good. I am happy, for the most part, with the speed of the service provided. The 2 stars are for the quality of the service. However, the exuberant raise in the pricetag yearly is unacceptable. If you call the customer service, they offer to increase the speeds and add on services which you don't want, rather than locking in your original price or switching you to offers for new customers. That sort of behavior has soured me off RCN. Unfortunately CrapCast is no better so stuck for now until something better comes along. read more

RCN is a horrible company to deal with. First of all the service is not that hot. Our internet goes out quite frequently. Second of all, I have spent more time on their customer service line correcting my bill than I have spent watching tv or using the internet! The messages are inconsistent. As one example, the rep told me that I would be charged $1 to make a payment online and it would be free if I did it via phone. Therefore I made a payment via phone... to find out that I was charged $4.50. The next rep with whom I spoke told me that there is a $4.50 fee to phone payments and a $6.95 for a live agent payment. What kind of company does not give clear information about what they charge you? That is not only poor business but probably not even legal. I am just waiting for my digital antenna to arrive from Amazon.com so I can cancel RCN once and for all. read more

I use RCN for Internet only, so I can't say anything about their cable TV service. RCN let me use my own modem, arrived for installation when they said they would, and has been charging $44.99 per month for 155 Mbps service. I just tested it with an iPhone over a wireless router (so this is a low-ball estimate) and the speed is 219 Mbps - which is faster than advertised! Comcast service was below the advertised speed and used to bug me with phone calls to try to upsell me. RCN hasn't bothered me once. I am very happy with RCN. read more

Bait and Switch is what they do, so beware. I was not happy with the exorbitant prices charged by comcast, so when the RCN door-to-door sales guy offered me a monthly rate with services equivalent to comcast at one third the price, I accepted. I realized the price quote did not include taxes and fees, but it turned out that the taxes and fees jack up the price by $66. The installer was less than stellar and very close-mouthed about explaining things. The service has been OK so far (3 weeks). Their tech support is spotty, with them being helpful about half the time. And if you use nomorobo, it does not work with RCN even though they claim it does. Tech support was unable to resolve that issue. I cannot recommend them even though the actual fee is still less than comcast. read more

When I first signed up and for several months the service was great. When I signed up, I made certain to indicate that I get paid once a month and needed my payment date to be within that time frame, and I was assured there would be no problem. But recently, I've started receiving late fees on my bill. So I called - not even asking to worry about the late fees - but just to ask to change my payment due date, and was told that no, they couldn't change my due date or that if they did, my bill would go up. They didn't attempt to offer any other solution: just keep getting charged late fees, thanks. They're just another cable company, I suppose: out to rip you off any way they can. If Yelp allowed me to give a negative star, I would. RCN is awful. Their customer service will have you crawling back to Comcast with your tail between your legs. RCN sent me a promotional mailing to my home address with a personal code. I called a 617 number to redeem and set up an appointment for installation. The woman I spoke to sounded like she was sitting at home in her kitchen - I'm 99% positive she was. Anyhow, after sitting around and waiting for the tech to arrive, I called to confirm someone was actually coming. The rep then told me they don't offer service in my building!!! This would've been nice to know before I had Comcast come pick up my modem. The RCN rep told me she had left me a message, but I received no such message. When I asked to speak to a manager it was not possible, probably because I was talking to someone at her personal home. I hung up and called the RCN 800 number and waited on hold for nearly 10 minutes before hanging up. Awful experience. If RCN does eventually come to my building, I will not be using their service. read more

Wanted to add and update that now I am for only 55 dollars getting 330mbps. Have had zero issues. At this price they are a better deal than 100mbps google fiber at 50 a month. Beware. They will randomly change the rate at any time without giving you a heads-up. I called in August and asked what the change in rate would be Sept onwards and the customer service representative said it will only change in November so I can call back at that point. However, my bill was increased by $15 in September. I called back again and was told I'd get a credit in my October's bill and going forward, my current rate would be honored. Two days later, my Oct bill gets posted and guess what, it does not reflect the promised discount. Last year, they sneakily increased the rate by a few bucks without informing me. I noticed this just now. They make promises to make the amendments, however, they won't commit to them. I asked for an email confirmation and was flat out refused by the customer service representative! This company is very unethical. I'd stay away and deal with Comcast. They might be expensive but at least they have great customer service and won't randomly increase the price without letting you know first. RCN doesn't want you to sign a contract (which I think is bad because that way they can change the rate any time). read more

This is my first time posting on Yelp. I've had such bad experiences with RCN in the past few weeks that I wanted to warn others away. My husband and I have been using them for a long time, but it's time to save some money. He called and got a quote for what we wanted, and I called and got a quote. I was on the phone for about half an hour to try to "downgrade" my service. The lady gave me a really hard time, was rude to me, and wouldn't answer my questions directly or honestly. In the end, after being on hold so she could talk to her manager, she finally gave me a quote, which ended up being for $20 more than what my husband had been told. We decided to go into the store on Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington to just get it done and get the confusion cleared up. So much wasted time. The receptionist treated us with scorn, and the guy who finally came out to "help" us just ended up yelling at us in a huff and telling us stuff we didn't even ask about. We left determined to never use RCN again. Their customer service is as bad as a used sales car lot, if not worse. I was SHOCKED. I still am! Why can't I just go on your website and find out how much internet and basic cable will cost me??? Forget it now! I am not sure why they were so angry at us for trying to remain customers. ----- UPDATE----- So I called RCN again after I wrote the above. To their credit, the Southern-accented man on the line was nice to me! Yay. I was able to just go with internet (no more cable), which was great except that the price had risen to $50 and I didn't have a cheaper option. Boo to that, but yay to a much better customer service experience. After I move, I probably will go looking elsewhere for internet; but for now, I can live with this. read more

I had been with Comcast ever since they took over cable services in Somerville and was paying $230/month for Phone, cable and TV (with most premium channels and DVR). I decided to buy my own cable modem to save $7/month but as soon as I returned the Comcast one, they started billing me $7/month for the phone modem, something they never did before. I got extremely angry and decided to switch to RCN. The RCN installer arrived at the very end of the scheduled time period, all by himself and without a bucket truck. He had to run a whole new line from across the street to my house, a distance of about 80 feet just using a ladder, which took him close to 2 hours. Once the line was up, he came in the house and we connected all the equipment, which took another hour. He made sure my phone, internet and cable service was fully operational before he left. All in all, I was impressed with the guy because he was calm and collected and knew what he was doing, plus he had no problem climbing up a telephone pole, something you couldn't pay me to do! I am now paying $154/month for essentially the same service, with some differences: The good: 1) faster internet speed, I am now getting 50Mbps up from 35Mbps from Comcast 2) no throttling of internet speed when downloading torrents 3) TiVo box with 4 tuners and bigger hard drive than Comcast's box, networkable with other TiVo boxes via my router, so I can play recorded programs on other TVs in my house. (2nd box is free). It takes some time to get used to the TiVo box, I liked the functionality on the Comcast box better, but fast forwarding through commercials and restarting at the exact point where commercial ends is easier with TiVo (big plus!). TiVo is also more energy efficient and runs much cooler than Comcast's box, plus you can hardly hear it. I can see no difference in HD quality from Comcast. The not so good: 1) when phone rings, number is not displayed on TV, unlike Comcast 2) no transcript of voice messages sent via email, something I thought was useful although Comcast's voice recognition software was far from perfect! 3) fewer on-demand choices, but you will find all the premium channels(HBO, Showtime, etc.) shows on demand, which is about the only thing I care about. You will probably need to record more shows, but that's easy with higher capacity TiVo. 4) the TiVo remote could be so much better, there are not enough buttons to do things directly instead of always having to go through the menu. I can't believe that they put the big thumbs up and thumbs down buttons in the middle of the remote, these are minor things that I never use that should go on the bottom of the remote. It is not a universal remote, although you can program it to control the volume on your receiver and change inputs on your TV, but you cannot turn your receiver and TV on and off with it, which is crazy. This is more of a critique of Tivo than RCN. I am very happy that I made the switch and that I am now saving over $70/month, at least for the first year. I know there are automatic price increases in years 2 and 3 but Comcast increases their rates yearly too, without any warning. I have had the service for over a month now without any problems whatsoever. I am just mad with myself that I didn't make the switch sooner. Stay far away from RCN. Due to an improperly installed and protected line coming into our business we have lost more than 6 televisions and video equipment. The only damages we had in the entire building were on what was connected to the RCN service. We have not had a call back from RCN about the problem and they have noted in the account that it is not their problem. So if you don't want to be replacing televisions every storm, go with someone else. read more

Pros: *Better rates than Comcast *More transparent about price hikes after the "trial period" *Decent service with infrequent connection drops *Service installation was prompt and professional (at least my technician was.. there seems to be a lot of variability with this for every company) Cons: *Web site and billing system is outdated and not user-friendly *I was charged a fee to enroll in automatic payments (supposedly this is not done anymore though I can't verify it on the customer's end) *I was charged a fee to change my credit card info on file (supposedly this is not done anymore either) *If a payment does not process, you are not notified until you get an overdue charge on your next bill, which is not highlighted in anyway or warned of in a separate email or phone call (when this happened to me before with other utilities, usually when my credit card number changed, they always send an email so I can update my information before I get a late fee) *They charged me for equipment rental because they hadn't received and processed it within 1 day after my service ended, which is unrealistic unless the customer returns their equipment days or weeks before service ends, meaning the customer willingly pays for service they would not use... read more

wrote another review but forgot to mention...Video on demand is not really on demand. Mine has worked perhaps 50% of the time---if that.. Invariably it doesn't work when I really want it. Not exactly what "on demand" would imply. Also, I really tire of watching pixellated screens on quite a few channels. They were better five years ago with fewer channels, no box, and somewhat cheaper prices. Unless you haggle with them on the phone you'll get screwed. read more

I would give RCN 0 stars if I could, but I will go with the 1 star. I switched over to RCN because of the lower price for internet, but that was a huge mistake. After a few months I began to realize that the bandwidth was always half of what it was supposed to be, the plan I was paying for. I would be lucky to get 5mbps of the 10mbps that I was paying for. I was the only one on this cable line. Internet was always unstable and would momentarily lose connections. Terrible customer service as well; when I called the customer service seemed incapable to answer any of my questions. I finally decided that I have had enough with RCN and wanted to switch over to Comcast or Verizon. The gentleman, Chuck, which I spoke with at RCN seemed bored, uninterested and did not care about his job. He tried a couple of tricks to get the last few pennies out of me. First of all he tried to charge me for a modem, when I had never used a modem from RCN. Then he said I could not cancel the plan immediately and that "the work order will take at least 10 more days to complete in which you will still be charged for service". Overall, an incredibly rude service and a terrible internet and phone provider. He would not give me a cancellation confirmation number either so now I am still getting bills in the mail. So the lesson here is to not save the extra 5$ per month and get a more reliable service from Verizon or RCN where the customer service can actually answer your questions and are not incredibly rude and incapable. Save yourself the trouble; I wish I had. read more

The sales reps come to your door and constantly harass you and try to convince you that they offer the cheapest price for the best service. We switched from our xfinity high speed to RCNS package deal of high speed Internet, TV and phone. The sales rep sold my fiance a package which he stated would be 105 flat rate and would not go up. Should have known it was a scam especially when he said you get 1 month free and a 30 day money back guarantee. We had th service for 1 week when the first bill arrived. They stated that these were their taxes which was 45% of the bill that we were given. Then when we told them that we no longer wanted their service the woman we spoke to stated that we would have to pay for the one week and it would cost around 55. The worst part was yet to c OK me when we tried to get our xfinity back to find out that their technician had cut our line and managed to destroy our old connection which we had to pay for. STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THIS SCAM SERVICE AS POSSIBLE. Don't ever get a service that constantly sends people to advertise and does not equip their reps with correct knowledge. I was accosted by two businessmen at dinner time, who promised me all sorts of wonderful things- 2 tivo boxes, high speed, super fast internet, free extra cable. I told them I wanted just what i had with Comcast and was not interested in paying more for a "lesser evil". Well, I guess they wore me down because I was signed up for Tivo and a satellite box, extra fast-speed internet, and cable. Let's see- the technician came 2 HOURS LATE. And not only that but when he came he said that all the fancy-pantsy things these businessmen had promised were not on the work order. When he called RCN, RCN was quoting a price HIGHER than what we were paying for Comcast. When I told them I was no longer interested in the installation, they were able to get the fancy pants businessman who said "don't worry about it, we will take care of it". So he fought with them for another 45 minutes and finally went down to get the equipment. The internet connection was never disrupted, which I appreciated, and if you can get the 50 i promise you will notice a difference. However, they pushed the Tivo, and they pushed it HARD. I am not sure what kinds of kickbacks they are getting from them now. They gave us two boxes, but didn't bother to set up the other one. So I called, and they said that THEY NEVER EVEN HAD OUR TIVOS REGISTERED IN THEIR SYSTEM! I waited on hold for 1 hour while they had 3 supervisors trying to override their issues. THEN I GOT DISCONNECTED!!! It still wasn't working, so fuming I called back. This next technician said it had NOTHING TO DO WITH REGISTRATION. An hour later she STILL couldn't get it to work and said the issue was "definitely on their end!"- Well thanks. So another work order goes in. Mind you this is 3 hours LATER! And i STILL don't have a second working Tivo box which you know they are charging me for. i have had promises of refunds, compensation, etc yet no one can seem to pull it up in the "fancy system". I told them to not sign me up for any fancy packages, I just wanted working equipment with what I was paying for. Don't get the satellite Tivo if you want to be able to pause or rewind live TV, another thing they didn't bother to tell us at sign up. I am writing this while I wanted a quote for DVR and this woman STILL ISN'T SEEING THE DEAL AND EQUIPMENT WE WERE PROMISED. I have been on the phone 48 minutes AND COUNTING! Some people I have spoken to were just plain rude, while others are just incompetent, there is no other way to describe it. It's is not over 1 hour later, and i am still on hold. I don't understand why this is even my issue to deal with. I have told them I am 5 minutes away from crawling back to Comcast. I am sure once everything is set up and working, it is great. I have cable, internet and phone service and couldn't be happier. The last three calls I made were promptly picked up, the technician was spot on with his advice, and the guys who came to the house to fix my service after the contractor screwed things up were professional and speedy. I could not ask for more. We've had RCN for many years, and they've improved tremendously. read more

Honestly I'm shocked these reviews are so low. I've had RCN for a year but it's been a great experience. Today my internet went down for a couple of hours and the maintenance workers were here well after hours fixing the problem. Otherwise everything has worked perfectly and customer service is always a pleasure to deal with. I've tried a few other providers in the area and feel that RCN is the best BY FAR. read more
