Due to the fact that the internet service was extremely slow and never reached anywhere near the "guaranteed" speed (which they only guarantee up to 60%), and during installation the worker switched the plugs for the two pieces of equipment, so one worked but was very hot to the touch, and the other one was very temperamental. So I finally made the call to cancel around mid-February, and they put a credit on my account for the entire bill (only 2 months anyway) so I didn't owe them any money, and all I had to do was drop off the merchandise. I was given a receipt and an updated copy of my bill, which read $0.00. Two weeks ago I received a call from collections asking for payment for RCN. I immediately called RCN and explained the situation to them, and the associate said he updated my account and I had no balance due. He apologized for affecting my credit. Thank goodness for RCN!! After so much drama and hassle dealing with Comcast Xfinity we switched to RCN and couldn't be happier!!!!! The customer service is great and we called late at night for a price quote and instal inquiry and they were so helpful and had someone there the NEXT morning! The guy they sent was sweet as could be and made me feel so comfortable and gave me a tutorial about the TiVo service. Overall I think it's so refreshing to have a provider who cares. read more

Their customer service is horrible. I was told that my service would be canceled and it turned out a month later when I received a bill I was lied to and $35 down the drain. Also, if you call them make sure to put it on speaker phone because you'll be waiting a long time till someone answers. Their actual service is awful. It wasn't possible to do anything more then watch a movie through Netflix. So, if you have more then one person surfing the web like I did good luck, because it will lag. That means no Hulu, youtube, xbox, or gaming unless your by yourself. Stop comparing RCN to Comcast, both are going to be a regretful choice! I would like to tell all my fellow yelpers about what a shady company RCN is. Back in August, a sales rep came to my door named "P" trying to lure me away from Comcast to RCN. About three years ago, I had RCN for my home but decided to switch to Comcast for reliability. Anyways, back to the matter at hand, "P" gave me a flyer where all 3 services (phone, cable, internet) would be bundled altogether for a price of $89.99. So this meant that I would get local and long distance calling, a good amount of TV channels and HBO and 110 mbps internet speed. To me, the most important service that I need is internet. Nowadays, the internet is cable of doing basically the same things a phone and television monitor can do now so I signed up for this deal. A few days go by and the installation tech comes to my house ready to hook up my house with RCN services. He asked me for a brief overview of what I would be receiving so I told him that I would be phone, cable and 110 mbps of internet speed. This is when everything started to fall apart, the tech stated that his work order had me set up for 20 mbps of internet speed and not the 110 mbps that I was promised from this sales rep. As soon as I heard 20, I told him to stop with what he was doing and to cancel this work order because of the false promises. Everything was canceled and I was back with Comcast. In early September, "P" calls me again one more time asking me to sign up for RCN with the same three services and the internet speed that I had requested for now $79.99/month if I remember. I told "P" that the price is very enticing and if I do decide to switch, I would call him so he could get the sale. I never called him because I decided that switching cable companies again would be such a hassle. Around mid-September, I get an e-mail from RCN stating that I had a work order for all 3 services scheduled to be installed in October! Since I get this e-mail over the weekend, I immediately called RCN customer service on Monday to check up on this. As I contacted their customer service, they kept stating that I had "signed off" for this work order either by voice verification or I actually signed the work order document. I never signed anything and the only time I did a voice verification was back in August when I signed up for RCN initially only to cancel because of the internet speed. Realizing that I was not going to get anywhere from calling these people, I took this over to social media to voice my frustrations over this fraudulent work order that someone from RCN did for me. As my messages were seen, heard and read on social media, I was immediately contacted by a RCN social media rep about my concerns. I asked this rep for proof of this so-called "work order" that I had signed up for. She e-mailed me the work order and guess who signed me up for RCN services? It was "P"! By this time, I was livid. This "P" character took my information that I had given to him back in August and made a fake work order thinking that I would actually sign up for RCN service. He had ALL of my information. The most scary part was he had my social security number and I was absolutely terrified about what this company could do to me and to other people. I filed a complaint on the BBB and that is when I actually got a call from someone at RCN. So I contacted RCN numerous times about this and went on social media before somebody actually gave me a call in regards to this. I couldn't believe this company. I just want all of my fellow yelpers to know that I do not want anybody to go through the ordeal that I went through. I had to contact Comcast as well to tell them that I didn't place this work order and RCN fraudulently did this without me knowing. They couldn't call them and I had to call them to request this. I had to clean up the mess RCN did to me when I did absolutely nothing at all! I just want everyone to be careful. I now have really started to be more careful with the kind of information that I give to companies. I hate having to verify the last 4 digits of my social security to companies because I now keep thinking of this incident that occurred to me. If an RCN sales rep comes to your door, politely decline their enticing offer and move on with your day. read more

I decided to "Cut the Cord" and had Comcast and Fios in the past. RCN had a great deal for Internet only for $55.15 as apposed to $240.00 per month I now have RCN, an Antennae for local channels (If you decide not to have local and internet with RCN), A Roku box which allows me to do Sling TV, Netflix, CBS.com and Amazon prime. I am not a computer savvy person but found this new set up to be fairly painless. Great signal and service Hope this is helpful and allows you the cut the cord if you choose to :):) read more

Terrible customer service over the phone. I was told that it would be a 10 to 20 minute wait, so I stayed on hold. 45 minutes later I was still on hold and hung up. There was no option to leave your number and get called back when your number was up in the queue. Absolutely the worst. The only reason I didn't give them one star is because I have rarely had problems with them before. read more

I recently posted the review below concerning an issue I had with RCN. I'm happy to say that RCN responded to my YELP review by promptly taking care of the issue and refunding me the charges I was disputing. It does seem a little odd that their front-line customer service people can't do the same thing, but I'm happy that RCN took care of the problem. I will be continuing as an RCN customer. None really available and they were not willing to cut cost. They did offer free 1 year upgrade to Internet access speed which I accepted. What they did not tell me was that at end of that year they would start charging $10/month. I don't typically check all the individual charges every month, just the on demand stuff so did not see this charge until months into paying for it. Called RCN. Would they take those charges off? No. Would only take off last months and that only because within 30 day "dispute" period. They will offer a serious discount for a year to a new customer but will not spend $50 to keep an existing customer. Well they just lost my business. I am going elsewhere for this service. read more

Terrible cable network. Frequently freezes requiring you to shut off your television. It is a common occurrence that the network connection is disabled or not found resulting in hours of no cable connections an extended periods of time waiting on hold with the run help line. I'm really angry. I set up an account, they sent an installation guy several days later, and he took one look and told me that I had no RCN hookup so he couldn't install. RCN gave me no warning that this was a possibility. Now I have to wait another week before I can get internet and I have no idea when I can schedule another time for somebody to come in and install it. read more

So I switched to RCN from Verizon thinking I'm gonna save almost $100... I didn't! Lmfao.. on top of that.. I call to ask if I can make 2 payments one would be 2 days after the termination.yes it would be paid in full.. NO! I paid a bill over the phone with a live person. After I gave the credit card number I immediately told him to cancel it and to use another card. He told me it was cancelled. Well that was a crock of crap. Two whole days later, the funds are still negative on the card I cancelled. I bounced two checks because of this. He failed to mention the funds works be on hold. I spoke with a manager today about my problem and she couldn't of cared less. Told me to keep checking my bank statement to see the funds released. I'm livid. This isn't the only problem I've had with them. I'm going to dish network. I would rather shitty service during a storm then to be bouncing checks on their error. read more

Ok, read lots of bad ratings - but I signed up anyway last week - and I am pleased. (My neighbor in my building here in Boston's West End said he's had RCN for a few years and it's fine, though he negotiates the annual price increase back down to the old rate ;) Install was timely, no problems... and services working as advertised (it's been one week now). And I should say the sales person who signed me up was "Excellent" - very personable, very thorough, and nice. BTW, I got the triple play pkg with 10Mbs internet for $79.99/mo (which turns into $87.99/mo incl equipment), plus taxes, etc. However (isn't there always a "But..."), the first bill had an error - an extra 7.99/mo for showtime. Well I just got off the phone - took a somewhat frustrating one full hour (mostly on hold), but all set now. I actually made out because the advertised 79.99 deal said 3 free months of showtime, and customer support couldn't find the Offer Details (the deal is just for Boston... it's more like 109/mo in DC) - AND SO she gave me $10/off for 12 months! (so the 7.99/mo for showtime minus the $10 credit = fine by me). Anyway, RCN should really be "EMBARRASSED" with the first customer service rep, but the supervisor was ok. Oh, and I just had to ask, cause I was sure the Help Desk wasn't here in the U.S.or in India... Turns out it's in the Phillipines... Perhaps they offer too many deals to keep track, or maybe it's their systems, or perhaps it could be with their training program. Bottom Line - The price is TERRIFIC, unlimited nationwide calling, good lineup of Cable stations (including NESN for the Red Sox), and hopefully 10Mbs of internet... at less than 1/2 the price I was paying Comcast and Verizon! read more

I am unfortunately making the switch to Comcast. When I pay for 25mbps of internet and receive 5, there is large issue which beds to be addressed. Customer support gives them the second star but it rarely made a long term improvement. read more

Fist let me say that the customer service is outstanding! Great people working there! ....But the product sucks. Slow, slow, slow. We have the "fastest" internet and it can't handle a whole lot. Channels always pixelated, etc. You get what you pay for. It's cheap but we are staying with them for the customer service alone. A real trade off here. If we had noteworthy cable and internet service, we would never need to call customer service in the first place. RCN isn't a monster cable company like Comcast so you are going to have some shortfalls in some areas. This is a real hit or miss service. read more

Abosultuely the worst service I've ever had with any internet provider. They recently added an additional maintenance charge in 2018, even bough I was promised that I would only ever have to pay a flat $30/month. Their customer service and billing people have been nothing other than condescending whenever I call. 100% would not recommend. read more

I have to agree with the other 5 star reviews on here. The company must have come a long way since those reviews were written because my experience has been overwhelmingly positive. So much so that I would do anything to keep RCN over going back to Comcast. The install scheduling was effortless and accommodating the install tech was friendly and helpful. I even had a problem the first day that was solved with almost unbelievable ease: the installer left and I hooked my laptop to the new cable modem and tested my bandwidth at 8 Mbps of the 50 Mbps that was the advertised speed of my connection. I thought, here we go, same old nonsense. I called tech support to complain just because and she said that it sounds like the limiter was set wrong. She reset my modem and in 5 minutes I was testing at 49 Mbps. I've never, ever, ever gotten exactly the bandwidth I was paying for from any telecom. Since then I've never seen it test below 40 Mbps and 7 Mbps upload. It's amazing. The netflix quality is also flawless. Any time of day, any day of the week, the video buffers instantly and comes in at SuperHD. Almost everything looks like it's coming off of a bluray. With comcast, by comparison, video was grainy and buffered frequently at peak hours (as in, the hours you're actually using it). I waited a few months to see if there were outages or something about the service I was missing but I couldn't be happier. If you have a choice between these guys and comcast, don't even think about it. Just sing up. read more

RCN Is Bullshit Technician was a nice guy 1 out of 4! since i had to constantly call for wiring issues and weak wifi signals. After to find out that each technical visit is 50 dollars. And in the notes if it doesn't say that RCN was at fault for the issue you, your shit outta luck and have to pay regardless. Then i get the ultimatum to pay for some protection plan for an additional 5 dollars a month is the only way they could waive the fees. all in all The hell with RCN read more

My story is the same as everyone else. Constant outages. Their infrastructure is so ancient that I found myself outside at night in the middle of the winter in snow doing a re-set by disconnecting and reconnecting the cable at the box. I would call them about once per month until it got so bad my neighbor and I walked to one of their non customer service stations and pounded on their door until someone came out. We demanded to be let in and our problem resolved. They were quite surprised. They sent someone the next day who apologized and promised to take care of us. The service went out again that night. The bill correction promises they made were never followed through. I know their promo cards look good and the price is great, PLEASE don't do it!! Yea, I know, some of you will and you will be sitting at your computer desk one night cursing the day you ever signed-up with RCN while on hold for the 6th time that month. If you get Comcast and FIOS in your town, you are set, because you can jump between the both of them as they fight for your business every year. 6 months with FIOS and then 6 months with Comcast. My fondest memory of RCN is when one of their techs showed up at my house for another tenant. He was laying on his back sticking a wire into the side of a little microwave he had set-up inside his truck. It just sat with me as man, where do they find these people. read more

Our 2 year contract with Verizon just expired and they raised our rates considerably and gave us no incentive to renew. Verizon always raved about their FIOS service. We switched to RCN who gave us a good "no contract required" rate (fixed for year 1 and year 2 for $10 more). In the few weeks we have had RCN, we are generally thrilled. Their cable service, picture quality and internet speed has been great, even a tad superior to Verizon's. Customer service (on the phone) is very polite. Installation was completed at the promised time. The TIVO premier which comes with the bundle is user friendly and allows recording of upto 4 shows at a time. You can record remotely through your ipad/iphone etc. Also, the TIVO lets you watch recorded shows on a second TV. Just a few minor negatives making it 4.5 stars: Cannot watch ESPN on your ipad (unlike Verizon) Once we had to call RCN as our TV guide did not list anything. There was an automated option to reset, which worked instantly. read more

Worst service imaginable. I have had RCN for 3 days. Before switching over they confirmed my home owned equipment would be compatible with the plan, but when the tech arrived, who went to the wrong address and had an attitude told me I couldn't there was nothing he or his supervisor could do with it. Instead they stuck me with a rental cable modem for 18$ a month which I am contesting based on my previous conversation with sales. Today, not even two days later I have been without internet for hours and each time I try to reach tech support I am immediately disconnected. The service and promises are a joke. I wouldn't want anyone to go through this sad experience and not even sure how my three complaints with BBB etc will turn out with them. read more

Pricing is decent for the triple play. Installation was a chore. I ordered 1 HD DVR and they keep on bringing a non-HD one. Funny how they remembered to charge me for an HD one. The service does have hiccups here and there. Customer service is a crap shoot. It's good if you get the right people helping you out. One thing that sold me is that the phone service works like normal phone service and not VoIP. If your internet goes down, your phone doesn't. Also, this gets rid of those annoying lag. Long distance is free on my plan for domestic and Canada. read more

When comparing to Comcast, I can not rate any lower than 5 stars. Customer service in Pittsburgh call center was very good. Service does not constantly download when I'm trying to stream Game of Thrones on HBOgo through Roku. That's all I care about at the end at the end of a long, hot day: uninterrupted service when I go to stream my one nightly indulgence. This is about my new RCN triple play service that was installed this week. I Just wanted to drop some feedback on the company and Bill Hewitt the Regional Mgr (I think) who is based out of Arlington. I sent Bill much of this content about a week after installation "Since my installation on Monday, RCN Customer Service, which has been maligned in all of the posts I have read online, has been superior so far. I've waited on average (five calls) under 45 seconds to speak to a live American service rep. Nice. There is no excessive IVR stuff going on (see Verizon FIOS for the winner on this). Even my girlfriend called last night to fix some issue with movies on demand. She was delighted. In addition, the contracted installer who was a local Woburn kid originally from Haiti as he told me, made me a little nervous at first because he was working alone and I knew he had to bring a new service cable from the street because of recent storms. No bucket truck either. But after a few minutes of talking to him and then letting him do his thing, I found myself bringing him my favorite lemonade and some fresh fruit because I was getting such a good feeling about him. As it turned out, he was very capable, knowledgeable, efficient, patient, etc., with a fairly sticky install (big house, lots of TVs, lots of computers, etc.). Inside the house he was nearly perfect as well. I helped him in some cases and left him alone in others. Completely trusting this guy to wander my home untethered by me. Once you know that somebody knows their craft, it's a no brainer for me to give space and trust. If you can give him credit somehow on his work here I would appreciate it. And lastly, the video is awesome. My whole house TIVO / DVR is the best video system I've seen, and the internet service is not bad at all (remember, I have been a network engineer for 25 years and my standards are high). Considering the alternatives you guys get 5 stars. Thanks for all your help. It has been a pleasure so far in this relatively short relationship with RCN. If you need any customer testimonials, I'd be happy to help. I would not be with RCN if it were not for you. The first few times I tried to call the sales number it was not a good experience. If I could give zero stars, I would. Do not get RCN. Their service is unreliable and their support is terrible. At least once a month our cable goes down and I have to deal with their support people, who never have any idea what is going on. Don't even bother with the live chat; they have no idea how to troubleshoot beyond turn off the cable box and turn it back on. About three weeks ago our cable went out on a Thursday and they were not able to send a technician out until Monday afternoon. So we were without cable all weekend. I had to stay home from work to wait for the technician. Last night the service went down again. This morning after being on the phone with support, the service came back on the main Tivo box, but not the mini tivo box. And then tonight, in the middle of a show, the cable went out again. I have been on hold with RCN for over 10 minutes now and still nothing. Definitely get your cable service through someone else. Anyone else. read more

We called RCN a few weeks ago to have us moved from one apartment in our building to another. They told us to call back the day before the move, because it would be a fast, easy switch. We did this, and they sent a tech out two days later (a Sunday), and they guy was clueless. He wanted to look in every room of the apartment for "newer outlets" even though we told him the ones in the living room were the only ones. He had trouble hooking up the cable and needed to get into the building's electrical room, initially explained it as the previous owner having a different company. When I called him on that, as we had a competitor before we got RCN initially and that tech hadn't had issues, he said that tech "got lucky.' I then informed him I used to do inside wiring for cable and asked him specifically what he needed to do in the electrical closet and he got flustered and wouldn't answer. He went downstairs to the electrical room, claimed he couldn't get in (our internet still wasn't working), and then left, saying he'd come back the next day when maintenance could let him into the room. He asked us to LEAVE OUR APARTMENT UNLOCKED so he could get into it while we were at work and he would "lock up after himself." My partner let him know she'd actually be there (we had a plumber coming by), and he said great. We called RCN and let them know our concerns and asked about why we didn't have internet when we were told it would be quick and easy, and got the answer of "sometimes it happens that way." They didn't seem fazed by the guy's behavior. COINCIDENTALLY, that day, within an hour of him leaving (potentially before), we walked past the electrical closet and it was wide open. We later found out from management that a few units had their cable messed with and were without internet. Which seems awfully interesting given the timing of him not being able to turn on our internet because it was "locked" and this happening. Dude never came back. Never answered calls or texts from my partner on the number he gave her. We called RCN back, and they are sending a tech later this week, when we can be home again. But it's been almost a week without internet at home, and I'm about to call Comcast. If they actually DO have to get into the electrical closet, I wish they would let us know this is a possibility ahead of time so we could get our management company out to unlock it. And maybe don't contract or hire techs who clearly don't know what they are doing and act like they are casing the joint and super shady. read more

I am so disappointed by RCN's switch and bait tactic. This message is posted 3 days after having RCN. I called RCN before I switched over to their services to ensure that the specific TV channels (Tennis and a few others) that I love are available. I was told that I can pay an extra $15 for the sports package to get those channels. The channels were available on the first 2 days. On day 3, I came home from a long day at the office. Got my dinner and ready to watch a tennis match. Boom. I had to call RCN. I was told that the channel lineup had changed. I need to pay an extra for another package. Really?
