My response back to Astound: I made over 7 attempts to have by quote fixed to no avail. Astound kept increasing the price from $177 to $208. So happy I am not a customer. I saw their true colors on how they didn't care and they didn't want to fix the issue. Also, ASTOUND kept saying they don't have this information on the quote. I sent their own email to them 3 times with no resolution. I believe all the bad reviews on this and other websites. ASTOUND is merging with another company if you haven't heard. ASTOUND has 3 emails from me so they have the documentation. I asked to speak to a manager and they said 24 to 48 hours wait. I have notified the Better Business Bureau as well as the Secretary of State Office in Massachusetts with complaints about their deceptive sales practices and fraud. Similar experience to others. i've had their internet service for about a decade and it was fine for many many years, but in the past couple years they've been jacking up the costs way too aggressively. I reached out to their support to find out if there is way to reduce the monthly cost and they said only if i add a phone line or pay a $100 service fee.... then a week later they jacked up the cost again :-O their support is pretty unhelpful if you can even reach them. Just been told by RCN that my final bill (I'm switching to FIOS because the bill is less than 25% of what RCN is charging for the same internet speeds) WILL NOT be prorated. I would NEVER recommend RCN to anyone, because: 1. Starting out at about $70/month, in recent months the charge has risen to $173/month 2. When I cancelled they required me to return equipment to one of their locations, none of which is within a 30 minute drive 3. They do not prorate the final bill. Apparently this is a change in policy. I asked them to forward me a copy of the notification but they refused, said I received it by email in March. I have no way of knowing if this is true or not. At any rate, it means paying roughly half the bill for services I never received. Do not go with RCN. In Response to RCN's reply: (1) I had been an RCN internet-only customer for SIX YEARS, since February 2019, when the bill was ~$70/mth. By 2024 it had reached $138 and by March 2025 it was $173. (2) In 2024, RCN changed its policies regarding the billing of customers who cancel. They used to prorate final bills but the revised policy changed that, without notifying customers. They describe this as providing customers with service until the end of the billing period, but what it really means is that they continue charging you for days you do not use AFTER you have cancelled. The only way to avoid being charged fro the whole month would be to cancel on the last day of the period, bring the equipment back to them on that day, and start your new service on the same day. That is NOT friendly customer service--it's the practice of a greedy corporation. read more

A few months ago I moved into my new apartment building. A younger man named Tommy, who works for Astound, talked me into getting this internet because the best part was, it was only $35 a month when you set up automatic payments. That was clearly a lie. I was charged $60 every month from then on and just noticed a few months ago. I have called Astound 3 separate times, I have made a case 2 times and every time I've talked to someone they inform me that I will be hearing back from a supervisor. Guess what, I've never gotten a call back. I am currently still in the process of contacting someone to resolve this. I called the customer service line. I waited 45 minutes on a hold to be told there's nothing they can do to disconnect my service. I asked them why they can't disconnect. They said they must attempt the disconnect after the next billing cycle stating that they must attempt to charge my card once more before they can disconnect. Essentially refusing to disconnect my service at my own will. I've been charged for the past three months for service that I haven't used since February. It's May now. I've since switched services but can't get my service disconnected from Rcn because they refused to disconnect it until they can milk my account for one last month. They live and die by their automated systems meticulously crafted to give you the bare minimum account control hoping they can squeeze an extra month or two from you because you likely won't bother to call to wait on hold and if you do they will more than likely suspend the service instead of disconnect while they charge you for the service requested+fees(16$)+late fee ($10)+reinstate fee($40). Go with Verizon if you can -- amazingly, it'll be better for you. I've had internet with Astound for about five years now, and I can tell you the service is reliably awful. I've been paying for gigabit speeds and reliably receiving 20 Mb/s download. The quality is atrocious, with outages showing up every couple of weeks within my area. Customer support is one of the most unhelpful I've ever seen. When calling in to complain about my service being unreliable and bad enough to impact my work, they proceeded to try and upsell me on their mobile plan. If their phone reliability is in the same realm as their internet, I'd sooner move to smoke signals and carrier pigeons. read more

Internet service from Astound/RCN is fine, but they will nickel and dime you whenever possible. I had a technician come out to fix a problem with the wiring coming into my house. This is not something that I could have solved on my own. I tried to replace the modem and connected it through support over multiple calls, they confirmed a technician was needed. When there is an issue that I can not resolve, there should not be a service fee...but I found an $80 service fee on my next bill. Word to the wise, record your interactions with technical services. They confirmed that my service would be cancelled/discontinued on August 31. Then on August 15 my connection went down and I contacted customer service to resolve the issue. They informed me that although they had confirmed it would last until August 31, that my service had been disconnected early on the 15th and that the only solution was to resign up for a month of service at a higher rate -- I was only 11 months in to my original contract where I was getting a special introductory rate. All I wanted was for them to honor the original contract and the communication in which they confirmed when my service would be disconnected. They however would not and they best they could do was say "sorry"! I would highly recommend staying away from this company or being extremely diligent in how and when you communicate with them for any changes. EDIT: After reaching out via Yelp, I was offered a discount to reduce my bill to what it should have been originally. Astound continued to increase my rate. When I called after the latest invoice increased $30 a month I was told they had no promotions available. They said I could swap out an old cable box for a new one and save $47 a month. I made the switch and am awaiting the new invoice to see if I was truthfully informed. On the second day with my new cable box I lost my internet connection followed by losing my cable connection as well. It was restored after I rebooted the modem for the internet. I called customer service today to inquire about this issue since it never happened with the original cable box and was told that whenever I lose internet connection, which is daily, the new cable box is designed to lose cable connection as well, thus requiring an internet reboot to continue to watch cable TV. I recently signed up for an internet plan with Astound (RCN) that offered 1 Gbps service for $35 per month, plus taxes and fees, with the modem included. The promotion also promised one month of free internet service and a $100 Amazon gift card. After speaking with a sales representative, I was guided through the setup process, including creating an online account and enrolling in auto-pay to ensure I qualified for the advertised discounts. Despite following all the steps as instructed, I received my first bill, which included an $83 charge for installation. While the first month of service was free, I was told by the representative that the discount would be reflected in the following bill. However, when I received my second bill, the amount was $156 instead of $146. Upon contacting customer service, I was informed that I would not be receiving the discount because I was not enrolled in paperless billing. I recently got the wireless internet by Astound and overall installation was smooth however, from 2nd day onwards, my speed got reduced from 300 Mbps to 30 Mbps. Despite having only 1 device connected, the support couldn't do anything. All they were asking me to do is a wired speed test. My Macbook doesn't have a port for a wired test. I feel this is another way to scam customers by signing up for 300 Mbps and delivering 1/10th of it. Will wait for 2-3 days. If this doesn't work, I'll replace it with Xfinity. They quote semi-acceptable prices for below-standard speeds, but if you read the fine print they reserve to update those prices to any price they choose after a one-year term, and will then further change those prices any time they wish. After that point, they'll offer "deals" that get your price down to well over what their competitors offer for better service even after introductory rates end. I was excited to sign up with RCN a few years ago to get away from Comcast. I thought it was okay to put up with slightly higher prices and spotty service just to avoid Comcast's shady practices. Little did I know that RCN would be much shadier than Comcast ever had been. After a short time they doubled the price of my service and then condescended to me when I called to question what had happened -- they clearly felt they had the right to steal my money if I didn't watch them like a hawk. I have been a customer with RCN for over 13 years and have generally been satisfied with their internet service and pricing. However, I have an issue with how my bill increases over time. For example, my bill went up by $3 in September 2023 and then jumped significantly from $59 to $79. Last October, I called to find out when my promotional rate would expire to avoid unexpected charges. I was assured that my rate would not increase for 12 months. However, a few days ago, I noticed that my bill had increased from $59.59 to $79.59 between May and June. This change was buried in the fine print on the last page of my bill, which I believe should be highlighted on the first page since it's important. I called RCN to address this issue and spoke with Angel, who only saw a record of me calling about a modem and not about the promotion. He offered to reduce my bill to $61 for the same 600mbps speed. I noticed that new customers are being offered a 2-year promotion for $35 and 1000mbps. I requested to speak with a supervisor and ended up talking to Jennifer. She confirmed that I had called in October and asked about my bill, showing it was supposed to stay the same for a year. Despite this, Jennifer said that prices can go up and became increasingly rude and condescending when I asked more questions, eventually hanging up on me after 41 minutes. Atstound/ RCN makes so many claims of high Gb/ second, 5G network speed etc. it's bad. really bad. I was an RCN customer for 5+ years and I used to love this company. I never had an issue with service and the price was great. I moved to a new apartment last March and have had nothing but problems with Astound from the moment I moved in. I was an internet only member and my wifi service was out more often than it was available. I made 3 or 4 service calls in the last year, with the last two being for the same reason that was allegedly fixed the first go around. Meanwhile, my bill tripled with a "high speed internet" fee. The technician that came in was super nice and suggested that I call customer service about that because my connection had been "slow at best" during that whole period of time. I asked for a partial refund or for that overcharge to be applied to future bills. I was told the best they could do was a slight discount for the next 12 months which would still be significantly higher than the price I'd been paying for 5+ years. I quickly found a new company and when I called to cancel my service the representative asked if there was anything that would make me change my mind. I told her my original issue and she said unfortunately I was "already getting the best deal". This used to be a great company, but that has changed drastically. Updating my review from 2021...I switched from Fios summer of 2021 because their rates are ridiculous for very little service. Initially I was excited about my money saving switch to RCN now Astound. The first bill was HALF of what I was paying at $95. Then I noticed $1-$2 increases monthly until it stayed at just under $102 for the last 12 months. That was for local tv, home phone and wifi 940 Mbps. Not a bad deal at all! I never had any phone issues and the wifi speed and reliability is awesome. The tv has been a nonstop hassle. It's constantly freezing so the remote becomes useless! I think it's updating but it's almost each time I go to watch tv. I'm unable to change the channel, control the volume or turn it on. Last month I got my bill and it was $55 more. Now $157. Of course they notify you in very fine print that the intro period is over and now there's a price hike, equipment charge and so on. I called to see what to do to lower this bill because their price was edging towards that of Fios and I wasn't dealing with it. it, The agent was awesome. I asked if there was a price decrease if I canceled my phone and there was by $25. Still not low enough. The agent told me that I can purchase my own cable modem/wifi router and return theirs to save another $25 a month. Score!While I was still on the phone with the agent I went to Amazon and bought what the agent told me to which is an Arris Surfboard DOCSIS 3.1 Once my Arris came in, I disconnected their modem, connected mine and the final step was to call Astound to finish set up. The process was easy and maybe took 15 minutes. It's the same modem used by the cable/internet providers. It was $179 and it's mine forever even if I switch to any other service provider I'll never pay rental fees again. I went to Astound's neatest office and returned their phone equipment and modem. My monthly bill is now $87. I intend to disconnect their tv equipment and return and cancel that too. Why pay $40 a month for something that doesn't work? I recommend anyone who has a cable/internet provider go and buy your own modem and not pay their rental fees. You'd be surprised how much you'd save. To end my rant, buy a Roku tv or a Roku stick, fire stick or something that doesn't require cable tv, dump the home phone and just use these companies for internet service. The WiFi constantly dropped - the service was SO unreliable that if I had to take important work video calls, I would go to my office because I could not trust RCN's shoddy home internet. On top of that, their customer service is horrible. I sought help multiple times - they refused to send a technician out to take a look without charging me. In the last couple months, the raised their monthly rate by $20 or so - for a service they simply did not provide to me. I will never, ever use RCN again. I advise no one to use this company. I recently locked in a price as part of a "promo" that was good for a year, and then 3 months later they raised my bill and said it was due to a routine rate increase. Tired of having to constantly contact these folks over their shady increases, I cancelled my service. A month later, they tried to hit me with a $127 "modem fee" - which is comical because I never received any of their equipment as I've used my own modem over the last 7 years. Getting that sorted out should have been easy, but naturally they are so disorganized I had to go back through years worth of billing to prove I never received any of their equipment or had it installed. We had RCN/Astound at my Brighton apartment of seven years, up until last week. Over the last 2-3 years in particular, the quality of our wifi got worse and worse, which was a serious problem because like many people, one or both of my roommates were working from home full-time during that period. We paid for an upgrade, and then an extender to improve the connection at the far end of our (quite small) apartment, more than doubling our bill, but in spite of this, significant lags and slowdowns kept happening until the last few months when we started losing any ability to maintain even one video call most days. They also make ending service difficult. Their website doesn't provide instructions, and even after I called and told them I needed my service discontinued at the end of the month, they appear to be charging me a partial fee for September. They're also currently charging me a huge fee for equipment, though presumably they will remove that fee once they process the return (sent promptly by mail using the packing slip provided to me by their website). When I called to talk to a rep about my bill, the amounts she was seeing in their system were not the same as the ones on the statement I received today (an odd-numbered difference that didn't line up with any information I could find), adding further confusion and stress. I'm not sure I could be a less satisfied customer. The only positive thing I can really say is that I do find their customer service reps to be unfailingly polite, but I'm inclined to credit that to the individuals in question. Then speed went down and after 6 months I took a look at my account - they had downgraded me to 500 Mb, without telling me or asking me, and continued to charge me $100/month. I then called them but their phone system wanted me on hold for 27 minutes - nope! I immediately switched to Xfinity, got 1.2 Gigs for $20 less. Day later the RCN customer service called me and just talked over me, did not listen, and essentially berated me and then hung up on me. Where do they find these people!? Way to run a competitive business! They make comcast(!) look good. read more
