I only give them 1 star becasue you have to rate at least one, should get negative if possible. I Hate RCN!!! Channels drop for no reason, VOD never works right, DVR only records correctly half the time. So I call and guess what, just like most technical support I get sent outside the US. The peson on the other end is hard to understand and all they want me to do is turn off my box so it can "re-boot" and this is for a minimum of 2 hours. How is that techical support? I pay for a service that never works right and when I call custmer support they offer me - get this - $.15 (yes I said 15 cents) for my trouble trying to access VOD. To add insult to injury they have the balls to tell me that VOD is NOT a paid service but a free option they offer. The crapiest part ismy building only has RCN and I'm screwed. just had RCN installed today and what a great start. Steve the local tech was great. The time slot was 11-2 and he showed up at 1. He got right to work and in about an hour or so we were swapped over. No more Comcast and no more 200+ bills for basic services. RCN came in at 99.00 for a package that included tv,internet and phone. Steve was great - he explained everything and even bagged up all the old equip for us to drop off to Comcast. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. We moved into a new home and finally had the chance to try RCN. The tech showed up on time on Saturday morning and said he needed a specific tool that he didn't have with him and that he'd be back between 4-6 that night. He never showed up. I called RCN on Sunday at noon and they said tough luck. I called back at 3:00 and they said they couldn't send anyone since it was late in the day and it was a Sunday, but they'd have the tech come out between 2-5 on Monday. Monday came and went- no call no show. It's now Tuesday afternoon. Haven't heard anything from RCN and just called to have Comcast installed tomorrow. RCN has really stepped up. I had it in the past, and it was hit and miss. With only internet service, I was very pleased to have an option to Comcast and I wasn't disappointed. My internet connection was great, but I realize that may have to do with location - I don't really know. In terms of outages, it only happened once within a year and for about an hour. They required a deposit after I was late with a payment, but they let me pay it off monthly. I was also refunded the remainder of the deposit, just as they promised. I have had to call the customer service folks just a couple of times, and they are super nice and helpful. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! They provide a superior product at the lowest price in the area, are responsive to customer needs in a timely fashion, and are actually helpful to customers in need. When we first moved to Boston, we started with another company that charged nearly twice as much for much less than we received with RCN. I recently switched from Verizon FIOS to RCN. Verizon raised my monthly charge from $45/mo. to $53/mo, an 18% increase. I was not willing to pay $53/mo for Internet. RCN charges $39/mo for their lowest priced connection. This was my least expensive option. One benefit I did not expect was a much better internet experience. Netflix and Hulu loaded very quickly. In fact, I noticed that almost all external services loaded much faster than with Verizon. Here's a little secret internet providers don't want you to know: you don't need more than 1.5mbps per user. This includes gamers. The reason all providers tout ever faster and higher bandwidth numbers is pure marketing BS. They know people will compare the speed of their provider against another. Naturally people will want to have a "faster" internet. The dirty secret is that the slowness we all experience when we use the internet has almost zero to do with the speed of your connection to the rest of the world. Most services will never send you data faster than 1 mbps because the data has to hop from node to node and pass through various peering points and transit hubs. The slowest hop is what you experience. RCN (for now) seems to have much more capacity than its competition. Therefore, even if you have only 5mbps of bandwidth from RCN, your experience will likely be better than the other providers with more "speed", since RCN has more capacity than they do. Save your hard earned money, don't pay more for ever higher amounts of speed. It's all smoke and mirrors. Buy the lowest available tier (5mpbs is plenty). Also, fiber optic has nothing to do with your experience. Again, marketing. Verizon FIOS touts itself as the fastest network. My experience was that services such as Netflix and Hulu are sub par. There is buffering and long delays. The deception lies in that they never tell you that this "speed" only applies when the peers are on their own network. Once you try to watch Netflix or Hulu, the experience is very different. They do not have the capacity to peer across different networks very well. I believe this is intentional since they probably want to extort more money from those content providers (as if we aren't already paying them enough). I understand cable companies are not known for prompt courteous service. RCN didn't show up when they told me they would. Ultimately they did come and setup my service fine. The technician was knowledgeable and friendly. He wasted no time doing the install. At the end, my connection was working fine. So far I am pleased with RCN. I'm keeping a careful eye on their network performance. I am also pleased that RCN is a better than my experience with FIOS. My only concern is that RCN will raise the price next year because there is a lack of competition in Boston. But if we all demand better value and better service, we will get it. read more

I liked RCN at first, but after this past weekend with one of the installation technicans...I hate them, and I plan to report them to the BBB....number one for those of you who do not know, when you are moving to a new house or apartment, there is a reconnection fee that they charge to do that...ok fine...that's fair because they disclose that to you when you set up an appointment...even though they shouldn't charge you for keeping business with them...but that's neither here nor there. So here this lazy technican comes to my house, (I chose a window of 11am-2pm) he show's up at 1:38pm...hmmm at least he made it in time right?? That's also fine, but annoying... My only request to this meat head was that he change one of the wires that was previously damaged from the last tenant with a new wire...that takes less than 5 minutes...and this meathead told me no, he would have to charge me to do that because its extra work!!! I told him isn't that part of an installation, to install wires? Needless to say I ended up calling RCN to complain about this idiot...and do you know that the representative had the nerve to be chewing and eating food in my ear!!! When I called him out on it he got annoyed at me and said " IT'S JUST COFFEE" ...liar, since when you have to chew coffee for it to go down!!! And isn't that phone etiquette 101...not to eat or drink anything while your on the phone with a customer!!! Disgusted once more, I asked to speak to a supervisor....none available, how convienient!!! I was told that once the sup was available, he would give me a call....it's been 3 days since then...Do you think I would ever get a call!!! Nope don't think so...BBB here I come!!! DO NOT USE RCN!!!! I had a terrible experience with RCN, tons of hidden fees. I had everything auto-withdrawn from my account and was always paid up. When I moved away, the roommate who stayed behind had everything transferred to his name, but then changed the service. When transferring the service, we were both on the phone and the tech said everything was all set and that the account was no longer my responsibility. I received notifications months later saying that i was months behind and that i was being sent to collections and that my credit was permanently affected. Speed is good and has nice price, HOWEVER--good luck getting connected to a good representative when you call. I got 50/50 chance of running into bad representatives, and they are not only rude, but also do seem to know anything about the policy and service their company has. They either messed up my setup completely or provided totally wrong information (and of course in a rude manner even if they are wrong). Luckily the other half of time I was connected to good representatives and get things clarified and corrected in an appreciable manner. read more

Look out for any "promotion" that lulls you into a sense of false security. I switched to RCN from Comcast a year ago, attracted by the lower prices and nothing more. I think I was paying about $110 at the time with Comcast for cable and Internet. I signed on with RCN thanks to their carpet bag door-to-door salesman....he got me to sign on for $85/month. The service was fine, but I was unpleasantly introduced to their non-promotion prices upon opening the bill--$140 a month!! What?!! Are you out of your mind?@ I can see it going up maybe $10, 15...hey even $20 a month. But this is almost double what I was paying. And of course there was no advanced warning of the price increase...that's how they get you. So I quickly took advantage of the opportunity to sign up with Verizon FIOS for about $90/month with a 2yr price guarantee. They offer a lot more HD channels as well. read more

WORST cable service provider I have ever had. If you can avoid using them, do it at all costs. Their cable stations freeze, their remotes are all from the stone age and you have to press the buttons 100 times before it registers you want to change the channel (do not ever blame your batteries) and 75% of the time your on demand service does not work and gives you an error message. Also, when you try to speak with a supervisor they give you every excuse in the book as to why it is not their fault and have zero customer service etiquette. So, I have been a loyal subscriber to RCN for several years! When I call they even tell me, "You are one of our most valuable customers!" Well sure, hat is because their rates have gone from about $50/mo to $180! It isn't higher because I went to the office in Arlinton, MA and complained and got a "Great Customer Discount" last year. Since then the monthly rate has crept right back up because of obscure increases. I am on a trip across country now and today (May 16, 2012) the RCN webmail was out this morning. This is a working vacation, and I needed to send design documents! I called 1-800-RING-RCN to see what was happening. All I got was "the number you have called has been disconnected, no further information is available"! WTF! I went on-line (the hotel on-line) and called their "apparent" new number. I spent 30 minutes hearing messages to hit various numbers to be connected to someone that might help, but all I ever ended up with is recorded messages telling me about outages in Manhatten, NYC, Chicago, and a few others. Nothing about Somerville, MA! No person ever answered my call. NO ONE! This reads: "WE DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOU"! They can go "F" themselves!! Really bad service... I've had them for 2weeks now and have had to call 4 times 1 time on a Sunday afternoon, Monday morning and Monday night and a Thursday afternoon.. All calls we're on hold for more than 21 minutes. With the message playing that there was unusual high call volumes and there's a long wait!!! I live in Needham and got RCN because it seemed like a good deal. However, our internet connection is glitchy and we don't get all the cable channels we're supposed to. Plus, this a cable company that when someone shows customer loyalty, they continually up the price every year. If you can avoid it, avoid this cable company. read more

I have been an RCN subscriber for about 10 years because it is the only choice available in my building. I recently moved and cancelling with them has been a complete nightmare. Total time so far is about 5 hours, including phone calls, online chats, and packing/mailing the equipment back. RCN is about as bad as it gets. The internet service is bad, the equipment is bad and their pricing is atrocious. RCN will tack on extra charges and also after a year raise your rate. Their customer service is horrendous as I have argued many times about their extra charges they put on the bill. I have a different provider (Clear) and Clear's 4g internet is the same price as RCN's 2g internet. There are other and better options out there. read more

Worst service ever. Zero stars if I could. I requested a disconnect back in May since I was moving out of the apartment and they allowed a MAN voice over the phone to cancel my disconnection request and continue service. Not only that but when I managed to have my former roommate on the phone with the phone operator to pay the remaining balance (two months later) on my account before transferring ownership, the phone operator allowed the roommate to make only a partial payment. Now I'm stuck with a final notice of balance that my former roommate used after I left, and RCN said they can't do anything about it. Every phone operator promises something different just to get you off the phone and the next phone operator says that whatever was promised isn't within policy. Worst service ever. Please do not sign up thinking you'll save money because the few dollars saved is not worth all of this. read more

The worst customer service ever. I wish I could give RCN zero star for their service. I decided to stay with RCN when I moved to a new apartment instead of switching to other guys. My first bill was higher than normal because of the installation work after my move. I paid this bill in full, on time but this was applied to my old account and the next monthly bill showed this amount as past due. I called their customer service to switch it back to my current account and they promised me it will get credited back to my current account since I paid everything in full. Well, the issue was never fixed so I called them again. And again. And again. 4 different customer service rep had assured me they will fix the issue. Either they don't know how to fix this issue since they have the most awful system or simply lying about it or don't care about customers as my online account balance still show this amount as past due and on top of that have a late fee for the payment I already made months ago. read more

I was paying for 110 mbps and my internet speed was down to 6 mbps, i called in RCN customer service and told them about problem. the customer care representative tried troubleshoot but couldn't resolve and he told me he need to send technician to resolve. i asked him twice if it cost me money if technician come to house. he said its free because its their problem. the technican guy came into to house and fixed loose wire outside my house and left. my inetrent is back on 40mbps. i said it is ok and i can live with it. but when i checked bill there was $49.99 technician fee. i called customer care immediately and explain my concern. the customer care representative didn't bother to listen and keep saying they offer $4 a month maintenance fee which would had avoid the maintenance fee of $49.99. i keep saying that you guys never mentioned anything about it before and i called twice to make sure that i will be not charged for maintenance fee. but she was keep going with maintenance plan. i couldn't listen her for more than a second and asked for Supervisor. he refused to transfer at first. she kept repeating that it will be no difference with supervisor. finally she transferred to supervisor after 10 minutes. her name was Chris, employee id 579652. she was no better than the previous customer representative. i told that her about her customer care agent not a single apology. she repeated same thing as previous care representative said. she didn't showed any desire to help and understand the value of customer. i am with RCN for more than 15 months and they didnt even bother to care. i was furious for her unwillingness to help customer so i told i want to close account to RCN. she happily said i have to give 10 days notice. i have never faced any careless, rude manager in anywhere in the world. but i am not surprise to find one in RCN. very pathetic customer service. i am done with RCN for good read more

I moved here in 2008. My internet bill then was $14.95/mo. It was raised to $19.99 in 2009, which was fine, although I have had to call them about a price hike, to bring my rate back to $19.99. In 2010, I had another price hike and a nice lady credited my account somehow to bring it down to $19.31/month. Last year (2011), they told me my new rate was around $45 which was then lowered to $29.99, which I was pissed about, because every year I am promised no more price hikes and I was used to my old rate. I just got bumped up to $34.99 a few days ago without notification, just showed up on my credit card (I autopay) AND it cannot be lowered back to $29.99. It was the final straw. I am tired of calling RCN after being promised for the past 4 years that my rate will NOT be raised. I cancelled and switched to Comcast. $19.99 with a 1 year contract and $34.99 months 13-24. It's CLEARLY laid out. I am pissed off that RCN promises not to raise rates and promises to notify me in advance if there is a rate changes, yet I have had to call them EVERY year for the past 4 years. Irritating. I am sure Comcast is the same way in raising rates, but it is clearly laid out when it's in contract form and I can EXPECT the price hike beforehand and do something about it. Honesty upfront. I was impressed at how professional Comcast is. The agent even knew the area and told me how to get from where I live in Union Square to the office in Davis Square... so far so good, and love having the $19.99 rate again. I don't care about the speed 3Mbps or 25Mbps, just want cheap, basic internet, since I get high-speed at work. I think RCN has gotten worse the past 4 years. They seemed great when I first moved here, but now they don't seem to try hard to keep customers. They were not able to bring my rate back to $29.99 or match Comcast's rate... even though I'll be moving in 9 months, a year contract with Comcast ($20x12=$240) is still cheaper than 9 months with RCN without contract ($30x9=$270). Worse OVERALL SERVICE! I've had directv, dish network, Comcast and recently I had RCN at same address. Yes, the service prices are good but, you get what you pay for. 1 - I was promised a $75 gift visa card for being a new customer, NEVER got it, and when trying to contact them, they would give me all type of excuses; even telling me that it would be a credit on my statement, I NEVER got that either. 2 - The service boxes kept freezing on a daily basis it was just impossible to go 48 hours without having to restart them and wait like 3 minutes for them to come back up! 3 - They promise a fast internet but it's not fast, as a matter of fact, wireless signal won't even reach the kitchen in a small 2 bd apartment. 4 - Customer service employees are a bunch of jack asses. In order for you to cancel your account, you have to bring everything back to their place in Arlington, MA first. 6 - Customer service at the Arlington location is no better than the ones behind a phone. Well, I hear RCN used to be a good company. It isn't that Comcast was bad - they just raised their rates and RCN had much better rates. I spoke with my rep - he set me up with first month free, an appointment to set everything up with a couple days, really friendly - you know, the usual. Well, I waited from 8 - 11 (as I was supposed to), got a call from the tech letting me know he was running late, said he would be there in less than 40 minutes. After calling repeatedly prior to him showing up at 12:45, I ended up having to take the whole day off work (don't think they will pay for my time wasted). Fine - as long as I have cable to watch the Yankees/Sox game. NOPE. My cable down stairs only had a few basic stations working, the one upstairs had a parental control block on it. I called customer service. After almost an hour on the phone (and the customer service in PA is incredibly friendly), they realized I would need the tech to come out. Now, my option was to waste the entire next day (8 - 5) waiting for a tech to show or schedule an appointment for the following week. I now have to take yet another half day to see if they can fix this error. So do you think my free month begins when they correct this error? Nope, begins when they stepped their foot in my house. So no cable all weekend, no Sox/Yankees, no compensation, no working with me on a better time so I don't have to take more time off work, no flexibility for the weekend - so I have to be on time with payment, I have to be flexible - all they have to do is.... Trying this sevice out for the first time. So far so good. It's only been a few days....had Comcast-hate them. Outrageous prices!! and if you ever need help, well you're on your own. Had them several times in another state as well. So far,the CSReps at rcn have been very helpful. RCN arrived on time for the install (which was free), the installer was nice enough. Did his job efficiently and left. One thing they could do is train the installer on how to find the tivo code for a tv that isn't programmed. Had to look it up online. Two tv's weren't able to be coded but some Tivo controls--- search for the codes automatically. Very helpful if you're the installer!! So, that your control works for the TV (volume,power off,etc) as well as the Tivo box. Not 2 controls!! Only one! Anyway, great prices! best of all free,install, one free month service, free Showtime,TMC for one year, and best of all no contract. I hate being stuck in a contract. Whole house tv, HD. i signed up for internet last year for a two year promotional price of 29.99, they guy came out he left a mess cables got caught in my lawn mower and i had to clean up and find wires hiden behind leaves. then i got my first bill, they had a 5 dollar unexplained fee so i called to find they were charging me for a router that i never had. after one year the price is 39.99 so i called and they said i i kept the original flyer and faxed it to them they would honor their price. i was never given a contract and i didn't keep the flyer, this corporation already went bankrupt once and it probably will again. i don't care what verizon charges me it is goodbye rcn hello verizon. read more

Decided today that i will be cancelling my RCN account. I have been a good customer for a year and a half, and have consistantly had to deal with RCN's faulty equipment. I have not had TV access in two bedrooms due to their faulty plugs (which my technician told me they have had to replace tons of, with no return to the customer btw), and because "my panasonic TV gives off a signal that blocks the remote"????? I called in today to ask what RCN was willing to do for a paying customer to rectify the situation without the continued distruption in my life, and with no extra cost. I was told after 5 minutes that they have exhausted all options. I said i would be going to Comcast then and their response was "ok do you want me to process the cancellation now". I am sad to say that after giving my business to a company for a year and a half they have zero customer loyalty, and could care less about actual customer service. I have recommended RCN to numerous friends and collegues when they have moved to Boston, and I can promise you that stops today. I will post my experience other places online to try and save other people the headache. I am very sorry to have to go to another company, but the complete disregard for servicing their customers needs has turned me off completly. Giving a customer who has been paying for non existing service due to faulty equipment a tivo box, which costs an additional $10 a month, for no additional cost to the customer, was too much to ask of them. We switched to RCN because Comcast was getting stupid expensive and it was impossible to get a human being on the phone when we had a problem with connectivity or equipment. We got a flyer from RCN with a GREAT value deal on bundling phone, internet, and cable, and when they came to install it, the territory manager for our area, Bill Hewitt, came personally to the house to make sure everything was all set and ok. He gave us his card with his work and cell phone numbers and direct email, and he picks up the phone or gets back to me quickly. So we now have cable service with a real live person to contact if we need something, which is certainly not the case with the competition. They have gotten back to us quickly and resolved any problems we've had so far, and it's been almost a year. Also, from time to time they have a donut or ice cream truck set up on our block. RCN is a good company looking to get better and they are open to feedback from customers, so they definitely deserve support. read more
