There's a big rug on the floor soon as you walk in the door and I slid almost falling. The Asian lady behind the counter looked at me like I was crazy didn't show no sympathy or anything. This was my first time visiting so I had a couple of questions and she was very rude kept getting an attitude having no patience at all. A group of 5 friends wanted to try Asian Kitchen because you make your own noodles. We came on a Sunday around 12:30pm. The restaurant was mostly full but we had no waiting as multiple tables were still available. We ordered 2 orders of dumplings as a starter. And after another 10 min or so we all decided on our main courses. 1 order of Dan Dan noodles, 3 orders of Ramen and one order of shaved noodles. I received my Dan Dan before the dumplings came out. I ended up having time to eat about 1/3 before the dumplings came out. Dumplings came out close to each other (1 order steamed, 1 fried) We shared the dumplings and everyone enjoyed them. Then the rest of the orders started to arrive but never really in any sort of unified manner. 1 ramen , 1 shaved noodle within moments of each other. Then another ramen. By this time I had finished my Dan Dans. The other 3 dishes were able to eat over half when we asked the waitress to check on the final dish. She came back and said it would only be another 2 minutes. After another 10 minutes she came back with a menu and said they had to use the noodles for a big group and would we like to order something else. By this point it had been over 30 minutes from the time my noodles had arrived. We told them no thanks we don't want it anymore. While apologetic, it just didn't feel like this was a surprise or even much more than usual. The food was good. I'm not sure if this is normal as this was the first time I have had Dan Dan noodles but the consistency of the noodles was all over the place. I had some noodles that were as thin as angel hair and other noodles that were a little thinner than my pinky finger. Somehow they all seemed to have the same doneness. Others were similarly 'meh' about their dishes. We all agreed that we wouldn't go out of our way to return but might return if we were nearby. But nowadays, 2023-2024 it really has stepped up its game. I tried it again and was surprised at how good the food was this time around. Well we ordered from Uber Eats and the "Jumbo" shrimp was absolutely not "Jumbo" in my entree! My scallops were so thin...it was like 1 scallop sliced into several thin slices. The chicken in my dish...the same...so thin...and what they called fried rice was we have no clue what it was but definitely wasn't fried rice...wasn't white rice....wasn't brown rice...just bland orange rice with no flavor...no egg...no soy sauce...no vegetables...nothing!! In my opinion they are very cautious to make sure they don't upset you. I ordered the Hunan chicken at first and it was umm not good. I didn't realize it had so many bones (like it was all bone barely any chicken) because at other places Hunan chicken was always boneless. The flavor was good though and I appreciated the spice level. So I decided that I was gonna eat something else (because I did not eat the other dish). The soup here is perfection we went back a second time and I got their homemade ramen with stewed beef this time instead of the shaved noodles and my partner got the fried shaved noodles w/ shrimp. Plus sautéed ong choy (water spinach) on the side which was perfectly flavored and crunchy! but I might be a little biased because I love ong choy anyway. Surprisingly I think I like the shaved noodles more for the soup dishes! I think the shaved noodles cling onto the flavor better but the ramen was easier to eat, and the soup as always was perfect. It's a weird thing to notice but their soup to noodle ratio is perfectly 1:1 almost. The fried shaved noodles were pretty good, it reminded me of chow funn, though we wish there were more veggies and shrimp in there. But for the price, the value is great here. The take home fliers didn't add the unique (to me) items. They have replaced a different Chinese restaurant, not sure when. My guess is that they will do a better flier. I'm returning soon to try some other items. Also have noticed good reviews from others. Nice ambience for the space very clean and a good in house menu. Wait staff very nice and helpful. The dumpling maker either walks around showing some of the noodles or is in front room behind glass making more dumplings. Beautiful work and tastes good. Did you guess I really like noodles? There are of course plenty of other items to enjoy so don't be in a rush your first time so you can decide what to order. The new owners just reopened this place a few days ago. They are also the owners of Chengdu7 in Cary which is fantastic. Love the new handmade noodles that are done right in front of the restaurant (see the video). I got Beef Ramen 牛腩拉面 which was awesome! The portion was generous and the broth was delicious. Buyer beware! We've been ordering from Asian Kitchen for about 10 years and have thought the food was decent enough to go back. Today is the last time though. I placed an order online via asiankitchennc.com - apparently an old website that still accepts orders, but the one I've used with no incident and definitely still exists and accepts orders - but there's also a new website asiankitchenonline.com. My father went to pick up the order, the restaurant couldn't find the order (it happens, not a big deal), but rather than just re-taking the order informed my father he was a liar and that there was no real order, and made him mad enough to walk out which is rare. I have the confirmation email, and have attached photos of the dueling websites. There are many restuarant options in Durham, so pick one that isn't incredibly rude AND mediocre. read more

3 of us had food poisoning after eating here. 2 of my friends and I all got diarrhea, I ended up throwing up as well. It was terrible. At the time of writing Asian kitchen has been operating under completely new management and cuisine concept for 7 months. The previous restaurant concept didn't do American style Chinese food well, and didn't really do authentic Chinese either. That has completely changed with the ownership and management by the same team responsible for Chengdu7 out of Raleigh. Asian kitchen specializes in authentic Hunan style Chinese food complete with authentic Southern Chinese cuisine (including spiciness levels that the average cannot handle). Their hand pulled noodle dishes are their specialty but they also make awesome home made dumplings that are excellent. Strongly recommend if you're looking for true Chinese cuisine in Durham. Note: most of the staff are fluent in Mandarin Chinese with some fluency in Cantonese, while they do have some staff that can answer some detailed questions in English. When it comes to late night American-Chinese pickup, this is our winner. Open until 10:30, this place has been a lifesaver more than once, once all other restaurants (except bars) have closed. Their food is much higher quality than your average late night Chinese, with a really pleasant, quiet, and trendy eat-in area that I always forget about. The guy behind the counter (owner maybe?) is always super friendly and there late, and he's always chatty with me, which is nice when I've had a long night and it's going so well that I've gotta grab Chinese food quickly. I stand by their house Singapore noodles and gyoza. My husband often gets the Dragon and Phoenix or sesame chicken, solid American-Chinese choices, if guilty of the typical sin of too sweet and too fried. (Which I get it, that's what you're signing up for). It's not nearly as sugary as food court Chinese, so there ya go.
