My parents have been to Asian Kitchen several times already but I was able to visit with them for the first time about a week ago! While their noodles are definitely a standout in terms of texture and chew, some of the dishes we ordered this time were a letdown... Between the three of us, we tried two noodle dishes (hand pulled noodles with spare ribs & shaved noodles with bean paste aka zha jiang mian) and two regular dishes that came with rice (eggplant with garlic sauce & Hunan roasted pork aka hong shao rou). Outside of the regular menu that comes in a giant booklet, we also ordered the salted egg yolk lava buns off of their separate dim sum menu. In terms of the good, I absolutely LOVED the texture of the shaved noodles and also really enjoyed the texture of the hand pulled noodles, though I personally prefer a wider noodle which would be the shaved ones. Additionally, the eggplant with garlic sauce was solid and so were the salted egg yolk lava buns! Now in terms of the not so great, while we understand that Hunan roasted pork comes with pork belly which can be fatty, many of the pork belly pieces in this dish were pretty much all fat with no lean meat (basically inedible) which I have not seen in this dish at other restaurants. Also, the sauce that came with the shaved noodles was very one dimensional and just tasted of sweet bean paste with very little savory / umami flavor.

We will be back, thanks so much for a great experience! This place does not deserve 3.5 stars. This place is delicious.the type of food that makes you happy/want to dance. (We drive 32 miles round trip to go here) The wait staff is friendly and attentive, the ambiance is casual and quiet, and the food has authentic taste and portion. Order anything on the menu you won't be disappointed. If feeling adventurous, try their specials. Lunch specials are also a good deal. We showed up at 8:15pm on a Saturday, seated immediately upon walking in, even though it was busy. Food showed up under 15 minutes. Great work team!
Asian Kitchen is a casual spot tucked in a strip mall with a huge menu of authentic Chinese dishes. There were seven of us dining in for lunch, so we ordered family style to try a little bit of everything. We got there right when they opened and were seated immediately. Service was friendly and quick, and the food came out pretty fast too. We ended up ordering five dishes, which was just the right amount for our group (we did need one extra side of rice though). Everything had a nice kick of spice--not too overwhelming, just enough to keep things interesting. The twice cooked pork was probably my favorite, and the eggplant stew was a great way to mellow out the heat from the other dishes. I'll be back with my friends to try out more of their dishes soon!

Had a quick and tasty lunch and went all in on the stewed beef. The service was very efficient and attentive. We were not short on drinks or any requests we made upon ordering. I really enjoyed the rich flavor of the both broths. The meat was extra tender and broth in the ramen soup was a perfect balance. The shaved noodles were a hit for me, as I like chunkier noodles. The broth was also a comforting familiarity. After two bowls of sharing, I was stuffed. Highly recommend stopping through!
Probably the best spot for authentic Chinese cuisine in Durham! The noodles and dumpling wrappers are all freshly made, which you can definitely tell. We got the: - Boiled Fish Fillet in Hot Chilli: A must get! I LOVE mala food, and this dish just had the perfect amount of numbing flavor paired with flaky fish. - Spicy Garlic Eggplant: A classic, delicious, no notes. The sauce was sweet, but not too sweet. - Chicken Fried Shaved Noodles: Loved the texture & flavor of the noodles. - Dan Dan Pulled Noodles: This was good, pretty standard. - Pork & Chinese Cabbage Fried Dumplings: Nice & juicy, enjoyed it. - Sweet & Sour Short Ribs: Pork was tender, but the sauce was too sweet for me. Probably wouldn't get again. Ambiance is fine, service is fast. Lots of free parking available. 10/10 would recommend!
A group of 3 came around 7:30pm on Sunday. I had the Dan Dan noodles which were good and flavorful, and had quite the quick. If you have a spice intolerance then this is not for you! There was pork in the dish, but not much, so if you're looking for something with more protein I'd recommend something else. Our waitress rushed us and ended up flat out asking us to leave so she could clear the table... despite the restaurant still being open for another 1+ hours, and they werent even busy..there was only one other occupied table on our vicinity.
Updating my review after going today. The quality of this place has only increased these past two years! The atmosphere is still extremely homely and welcoming, the service is impeccable, and the food is delicious! The only complaint I had was that the stir fry noodle was a little under seasoned. However, this time the flavor was amazing and very garlicky. Would definitely recommend!
Asian Kitchen is in my regular rotation for when I have a chance to go out and am feeling a bit homesick. I grew up with Chinese food and Chinese restaurants, and feel like Asian Kitchen is the most authentic of Chinese restaurants in the Triangle. My roommate and I joke about how we'd always be on the same wavelength when we crave Asian Kitchen haha. Come here for lunch or dinner, no doubt there just about something for everyone. We love the ambiance around dinner time cause the lights are bright enough but also a bit dimmer setting a great tone for a casual group gathering, or even a fun roommate date- or in my case, happily third wheeling ;) (the more people you have, the more dishes you can eat). When we went together yesterday with her boyfriend, we ordered the crispy fish filets, eggplant, la zi ji (cubed fried chicken in spices), Hunan pork dish, and also the pepper chicken. We loved them all! Favorites of the bunch are the eggplant cause it's soft and packs great flavor, the fish filets were warm and crispy on the outside soft on the inside, and the Hunan pork (which has a pretty strong flavor profile of the bay leaf). E5 reminded us a bit like Kung pao chicken but more authentic and the chicken was super super tender. They give a lot of chicken too and with the la zi ji, great sizes and a great spice on them. You can always count on your rice being really fluffy, the servers here are always so kind and very knowledgeable to what to recommend to you based on your preferences. Not only did our servers treat us super well, we could also hear them guiding new people around us around the menu and give them great recommendations, especially if they're newer to Chinese food too. I personally also love hearing Chinese spoken around me- again, it reminds me of home :)
I came here once years ago, but not since they started getting so famous for their handmade noodles. I was lucky enough to have lunch here recently, and what a treat! My dining companion has eaten here several times before and he guided me to the stir fried noodles (less broth than some other options, though I'm sure those would have been delicious, as well). We opted for veggies and everything was amazing! The stir fried string beans were really something special- cooked absolutely perfectly with a lot of garlic and the perfect amount of saltiness. The dumpling portion was generous and they were nice and hot on a cold day. The service was attentive and very nice. The ambiance is perfectly fine for the prices on the menu. I will definitely be back here!
I came here based off tik tok videos and reviews of their noodles and it did not disappoint! It even tastes just as good through ubereats, which is how I've been ordering mainly ever since I tried it. When you walk in, there really is a guy spinning fresh cut noodles in front of you just like the videos. The servers and host were all also very friendly. The shrimp fried shaved noodles are AMAZING. My friend and I get this same order every time and crave it often. They also have some of the best egg rolls I've had- really big too, so make sure you get a shrimp egg roll that they serve with a yummy duck sauce that tastes like sweet thai chili sauce. For other items- I was not too crazy about the dumplings or general tso chicken. The chicken was way too breaded and the dumplings weren't that flavorful. After trying it once I never got them again. The Mongolian beef is pretty good but not the greatest. I understand they're an old restaurant who rebranded but they are doing pretty great with the noodles.
Let me start by saying we went in on high expectations because the reviews were 4.3 and it was wonderful food. Well it wasn't. It had nothing a flavor whatsoever so let me start by saying three orders. One order was kao pao chicken with fried rice the other order was mango shrimp / vegetable with fried rice both orders had soup it was supposed to be tum kai. The first order was no mango flavor. It looked like slurry vegetables about four pieces and two pieces of shrimp. The fried rice was steamed white rice in a brown soya mushy on both of ours. Nothing else in it. That's not fried rice the soup I'm not sure what we got. I did see one mushroom in mine and one piece of chicken sprouts no coconut milk clear broth with a lot of red greasy oil. I'm not sure of the waiter spoke may be very little English so we asked him in advance before we put the order in and all he kept nodding in his head. Yes yes and I looked at my daughter and I said I don't think he understands what we're asking. My grandson had chicken Ramen and it was decent. My daughter took one bite of her food and says it taste bad so we called him over took him about 15 minutes to come over and we told him it was no good. It was tasted bad and the flavor was way off. He didn't understand and she says I'm not eating this. I took one bite. He said OK she can take it off or you know what just forget it and he goes OK and then he walked away. We asked for three containers to go one for the soup and my food and my grandson's food cause I can go home and fix it Up. He comes back and says well I'm not taking it off the receipt. I'll give you 2% off so it was two dollars for her taking one bite of food and I looked at my daughter went. I've never heard of that. She was mom not that's not argue with him. I don't even think he understands what we are asking and he walked away. Never gave us a receipt after we paid him. He never even gave us a receipt to begin with, and my daughter walked out because she was so upset so all I could post on here was a receipt from the bank, then withdrawing the money and you could see at the top Asian kitchen. I do not recommend this restaurant whatsoever it was a very disappointing and I told the guy in the front who said oh we have really good food. How could you even say that when I told him what happened to our food I said do they think we're stupid that we don't know mushy white rice, turn soya on it and not fried that it's not fried rice and there was nothing no flavor no nothing to it. He goes. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry and I said my daughter didn't even eat her her food. she took one bite and said it tasted bad and he takes two dollars off. I've never heard of that. She didn't get to eat lunch. She couldn't eat the soup. It was too greasy. I didn't eat the soup so I said I'll take it home and try to fix it up because they're gonna charge us anyways I would not go to this place. I don't know who gave the stars must be family and friends because and now the alarms were there nobody was there. just in case anybody says we didn't eat there. You can see right on the receipt of her bank statement the name of the place. The reason I'm giving you one star cause I can't do zero and my grandson ate a few bites of his own food. I tried it. I always do to make sure it's OK and it was decent.
I have eaten here before and returned because I enjoy eating the shaved noodle. The noodles had great texture and the stewed beef soup had a rich flavor. The bowl of noodles was a great portion for the price and I even took some home. I did not like the stewed beef because it was very chewy. They didn't prepare the beef the way I hoped and there was not enough fat in the cuts of beef to break up the texture. It was very hard to chew. Overall I rated it higher despite the experience with the beef because the server was nice and gave good suggestions and was transparent about the portion differences, several individuals came to check on our table, and the restaurant had no wait on a weeknight/the food came out quickly. I think the restaurant could be cleaner but overall it is not a bad place to stop for good noodles. The restaurant gives the traditional Chinese restaurant feeling in terms of decoration.

Third and probably last time I'm coming to this place. The first time I came, the server was rude. I gave it another chance and this second time a complete different experience with a different server, I think it was the Manager. Third time I come, and unfortunately, I was served by the server from my first visit, a girl with blonde hair. She again was rude from the beginning, even turned around and left when we were still talking to her. When we just finished our food, she started taking all the plates from the table and asked us to pay right there since they were not accepting payment at the front. We paid immediately, and then, she said we had to leave because there were people waiting for our booth, but there were still plenty of tables available. My husband had still hot tea left and had to ask for a cup to finish it. When we are leaving, we realized that there's absolutely no one waiting to be seated, and there was another large booth available. Our group stayed outside talking for like 10 more minutes and no one was sitting on our booth. I've never been kicked out of a restaurant because "people are waiting" and much less for people that are not even waiting. This was TERRIBLE!!!!!! 4.5, really. The Morrisville Chinese restaurants finally have a serious competitor in Asian Kitchen. Owned by the same people as Chengdu 7, I believe this restaurant is actually better. Most of the customers are Asian, always a good sign. The staff has varying degrees of English skills but nothing Google Translate can't handle and they are all kind and efficient. The food is outstanding and authentic. We ordered spicy beef & tripe (cold app). It may be the best version of that dish locally. The server made very sure we knew what we were ordering when we asked for the hot & sour chicken gizzards. We did and we were not displeased. This dish was delicious. And then there were the noodles, house made in front of you and hand-pulled or shaved on the spot. I felt that the shaved noodles were thicker and heavier than I would prefer but I will definitely order the pulled noodles in the future. The room isn't fancy but isn't as divey, either. The best part? We didn't get the "White Boy Treatment." The food was not dumbed down or toned down because we're not Asian. Worth a trip to Durham any time. read more

Was so excited to see that there's a local place that makes hand pulled noodles and knife cut noodles to order. This is in a nondescript strip mall and honestly you'd miss it if you didn't know it was there. It's not fancy inside...it's standard asian restaurant booths & tables...since everyone is clearly there for the food. The food is the highlight. The take-out menu is strictly Chinese-American food. The dine-in menu has the hand pulled ramen noodles & the knife cut noodles (wider, thicker and chewier) . The noodle dishes we ordered were all very good and flavorful. Green beans were excellent and dumplings very good. Definitely will be back to sample our way thru the menu! Word to the wise, pay attention to those pepper symbols on the menu. I drove out this way to enjoy hand pulled noodles and shaved noodles. Both were amazing! We had the stewed beef shaved noodle and pulled noodles with bean paste with shrimp (kid approved). Also order the green beans and 2 orders of the pork dumplings. I will say the only I was disappointed in was there was a lack of flavor in the dumplings for my taste. But overall everything was amazing and I will be back again! I wish they were pulling noodles that morning. But we went when they first opened! If you want to see them work with the dough I would wait to go later in the day. read more

I'm not really sure why this place has such bad reviews. I had a pretty solid experience here and thought the food was pretty good. The noodles are hand pulled and you can see the chef in the front pulling them live. The noodles were nice and chewy, good quality and fresh. I think the dishes are kind of hit or miss though. The shrimp fried ramen was kind of lacking, but everything else we ordered was great so I guess it takes some time to find what's really good on the menu. Note, the spicy dishes are very spicy. Even at the lowest spice level, I thought it was incredibly spicy so beware when ordering. read more

So I heard great things about this place and couldn't wait to try the hand made noodles. I ordered the tomato and egg with noodles and I ordered a side of Chinese vegetables to go with it and I saw they were very generous with the side of veggies so I was grateful and tipped a little extra even though it was take out to show my appreciation but then when I got home there was barely any egg or tomato and virtually NO SAUCE! This place was quite a surprise to me! I loved it and finished my meal even though it was quite a large portion. The knife cut noodles have a similar texture to the hand pulled noodles at Oz9 Lanzhou in the Bay. The beef portions were generous! I loved the spice level as well. The spicy intestines we got for appetizer was really yummy, crispy, and flavorful but the portion was quite small for the price we paid. The dried chili in the dish packed a punch of flavor that I found myself gravitating towards it even when we had finished the intestine pieces. I look forward to coming back and trying other things on the menu. There was a slight mix up where they took in the wrong noodle and soup combination but they attempted to remediate this. The inside was quite busy and it was a good reflection of how yummy the food was. It reminds me of a traditional, Chinese diner--redwood tables, low lit, and warm. read more

We had been here years ago and thought the food was just okay but then we saw a local food influencer post that they were under new management and has a chef who handmakes noodles. Well, that was enough for us to pop in on a cold, rainy afternoon to try it again. We enjoyed the chicken and spinach dumplings, ramen with vegetables, and shaved noodles with beef. As we had hoped for, the noodles were fresh and toothsome. Keep in mind that Chinese ramen is different than Japanese ramen, and uses a different kind of broth. We'll be back to try their other dishes. And yeah, they do have "authentic" Chinese dishes that most Americans would not order. We were encouraged that there were several Asian groups eating there -- always a good sign. read more

Atmosphere: Asian Kitchen is a friendly and homey Chinese restaurant. There's lots of small booths for couples and groups of 4, and even a hand-pulled noodle station in the front. Service: Our server was friendly and helped us through some questions we had about the menu. The Bean Jelly Noodles and Beef Shaved Noodles we ordered came out almost immediately, and the other dishes came out ~15 minutes after. Food: We ordered the Bean Jelly Noodles, Beef Shaved Noodles, Twice Cooked Pork, Boiled Fish Fillet in Hot Chili, and Stir Fried String Beans. We really liked the size of the Bean Jelly Noodles, as it allowed for the sauce to fully coat the noodles. The sauce was spicy and tasted more vinegary/acidic rather than salty, which we enjoyed! The Beef Shaved Noodles, arguably what Asian Kitchen has become most well-known for, had perfectly thin, chewy noodles, but we thought the broth could've been more flavorful and beefy. The Twice Cooked Pork and Fish Fillet were both satisfying, though the Fish Fillet dish wasn't that spicy. Lastly, the String Beans were sweeter than what we've had at other restaurants, but still delicious. Overall: Asian Kitchen served up solid, authentic Chinese food at a reasonable price point. The noodles were especially good, and portions overall were sufficient for 4 people. Asian Kitchen is a great choice in the Durham area, and we'll definitely be back for more! read more

I don't know why this place is rated only ~3 stars. I hate to give it 5 stars because I don't want other people in Durham to find it. It was that good. But I have to be honest, and I want to support this business! Normally, we have to venture out to Cary or Morrisville to find authentic and delicious Chinese Szechuan cuisine, but now we have a spot to frequent without the longer commute! The venue is wholesome... nestled within a large shopping center, a simple dining room, a hand-pulled noodle station at the front, not much English spoken, Pitbull and other club music in the background... IYKYK. Signs of good taste await. The staff was very attentive and checked on us frequently, making sure that we had enough tea and space on the table. They even boxed up our leftovers at the table for us! We ordered the stir-fried string beans (SO GOOD with the seasoning and perfect crisp), pork and Chinese cabbage steamed dumplings, stewed beef shaved noodles (hearty broth and soft, not too chewy noodles), and boiled fish fillet with pickled cabbage and chili (more sour than spicy, delectable broth). Portions are large and certainly justify the price; you will have lunch and dinner for the next day. Shout-out to my coresident for the recommendation; you know who you are! I've heard Asian Kitchen has had a change in ownership lately and bringing more authentic Chinese flavors to Durham. Those rumors must be true because I'm impressed! If you like Taipei 101 or Chengdu7, Asian kitchen is a similar caliber of authentic Chinese flavors while being right at the heart of Durham. I highly recommend getting the fresh noodles in whatever sauce you like. My favorite was the Dan Dan, it was savory without being incredibly spicy. I also recommend asking for the chef's special menu. It feature more authentic Chinese dishes that you can't find at any regular takeout place. The decor and service are straightforward and no frills, which was fine with me as I was there for the food. I would definitely return again and often! read more

Came there on a Thursday night and was blown away with the stewed beef noodles. It was great. See photo. So today i decided to order the same togo. Boy did they miss. They packed the soup into a 16oz container along with the meat. After you take out the meat. You're left with 8 oz of soup. Ended up with half submerged noodles. Didn't even finish it. The only restaurant around the Triangle area where I've tasted the "wok hei" so I'll give this place a 5/5. For those of you who aren't familiar, achieving this type of cooking is not easy. Authentic Chinese food can be categorized by great taste, presentation, etc. but rarely do we talk about the wok hei element which is essential part of Chinese cooking. WOW WOW WOW. I have lived in Houston, New York, Louisiana, and now NC, and FINALLY found good authentic Chinese cuisine. I came back three days in a row to bring different people because I and everyone loved it so much. And only had great things to say. Service was so quick and gentle and nice. It's got a nice hole in the wall feel. Food tasted like what I grew up with at home. Reminded me of my grandmother's (may she RIP) cooking. Tasted like my parents cooking for us again. To an older review: Leave it to our own people to leave pretentious, know-it-all reviews....surprised to find a wait? After being recommended by multiple people? It's a great place, what'd you expect? It might be busy....duh. Text or call system? Why would you expect that? Seems like someone needs to get out more. It's obviously not a fancy modern high tech place. 25 minutes is such a short wait compared to 45 and 1 hour waits. Like WHAT?! I'm shook at what you were expecting lol. It's busy, what'd you expect? Special speedy service at your table only? Our food came out all reasonably within minutes of each other. And we ordered A LOT. Granted it wasn't packed. If it was, I'd expect some time. Especially when the things ordered are complicated plates (again obviously ignorance at play here). Uncultured tastebuds definitely should eat a spoonful of msg and carry some seasoning in your purse lol. Everything tasted great and authentic and not overly seasoned and sweet like some Americanized-Chinese food (most are used to). read more

Yay! A new (to me) spot for authentic Chinese food! Super packed on a Friday night when we visited, but they send out orders QUICKLY! Loud and buzzy, but pleasantly so. Their menu more or less was composed of two categories of food: hand-cut noodles (in soups or stir fried) and Szechuan food. We tried some of each (skipped the dumplings as I don't get excited about boiled dumplings 水饺) Noodles were nice and fresh-we enjoyed them both in "ramen" and fried. The fried were a "chow mein" style and a bit skimpy on the goodies-mostly noodle, which certainly should be the star, but...I was expecting maybe a little more protein/veg? The Szechuan dishes were tasty. Twice cooked pork was as it should be. Fried intestine was nice and crispy. The stir fried lamb was a particular standout-tender, perfectly seasoned, and a generous portion. Prob our favorite dish of the night. One minor note-it would have been nice to have a few more non-spicy options on the menu aside from the noodles-we all love spice but when ordering multiple dishes to put together a family-style meal, you don't want literally every dish to be spicy/have the same ma la flavor profile-even most of the veggies were spicy. Was also mildly annoyed that our server told us we didn't order enough food (it's not our first rodeo! We ordered 1 dish per person which is usually plenty) and talked us into ordering a huge fish dish which we barely made a dent in. Minor issues which would not keep me away. Overall really excited to have another spot in the rotation. Looking forward to having some more noodles in the future! read more
