We picked up 4 entrees for our family dinner last night from Asian Garden in Chinatown, yesterday. It took us about 30 minutes before we could dig in. The food was fantastic even after being covered for that long. Beef chow foon - It wasn't overcooked or dry tasting at all. The flat rice noodles were cooked just right and the beef was tender and not overcooked. Katsu curry - Unfortunately, the sauce took its toll on the crispy katsu. Despite that, the dish was still tasty. There is generous portions of baked fried rice under a large katsu portion. The curry is the chinese yellow type...not korean or japanese curry. The curry had some onions and carrots pieces in it, along with just enough flavor to enjoy it. Peking style pork chops - These were more orange than red, the way I usually prefer them. Looks wise aside, they definitely tasted really good! The pork was cooked just right and there was a good mixture of lean vs fatty pieces. The sauce was really good over rice. Spicy wings - these appear to be lightly breaded and were still a little crispy when we got it home. The chicken pieces were of decent size too...which is great cause these days a lot of chicken places give really small cuts of chicken. Overall, the food was really tasty. It was hard controlling ourselves to not overeat. Prices were reasonable and the service was friendly. I can't imagine how much better the food would be had we dined in (especially the Katsu). Worst Asian food in Boston. Fried rice with "roasted pork" was actually deli ham. "Orange chicken" was soggy fried chicken soaking in a pool of pineapple sauce. Dumplings were oily and soggy. Recently returned for indoor dining. A pretty solid lunch spot in Chinatown! While they don't officially have a lunch special menu, their lunch price before 3 pm is 50 cents cheaper. I'd say compare it with other restaurants, the menu price didn't increase that much since Covid started. Food is served as it is made, just like other Chinese restaurants. When it's not crowded, the indoor air ventilation was good around 900 ppm for CO2. They have a TV that runs in Cantonese. Service is always friendly. Highly recommend it! read more

It was pouring rain for our annual Thanksgiving Asian dinner in Boston, and this was the restaurant closest to our parking spot, so in we went. It was icy cold in there, so we sat with our jackets on the whole time, with a tiny portable heater sputtering at us amidst a bunch of cardboard boxes. Happy Thanksgiving! The watery tea was welcome only just so we could warm our hands up with it! Food is...not great. We did really enjoy the sautéed pea pod stems in garlic sauce. The "Peking ravioli"--aka dumplings--were passable. Our daughter definitely seemed to enjoy them, but the meat inside was completely separated from the dough, so they completely came apart right away. The beef with broccoli was just plain gross: the sauce on it can only best be described as slime. It was oddly (and unappetizingly) viscous and orange and just no. The shrimp lo mein had those miniature shrimp that you know came right out of a freezer bag, and the noodles were much thinner than we preferred. Normally we would give a place like this two stars. However, the restaurant that we went to two years ago for Thanksgiving was so bad that we actually gave that one two stars, so Asian Garden shines in comparison, landing us on three stars. They stepped it up recently for Chinese New Year dinner. Started with a soup that was part of a fresh steamed fish / soup combination. The soup was made from the fish bones, and then the fish was later served in a traditional steamed ginger scallion preparation. The fish was really fresh, and took on gentle flavors which didn't overpower the original fish flavor. Also on the menu was a surf clam / bean thread noodle dish. These were really good; the surf clam wasn't too tough; the garlic could be a bit more fresh though. But overall it felt like a nice dish. The pea pod leaf was fresh, and this time not too greasy. The rice hotpot with chicken on top was really neat; there were bits of rice on the bottom of the pot, and the flavors melded well. Finally the pipa tofu had a nice texture; the pieces themselves were much smaller than I remembered, but the texture and the taste were nice as ever. This will always be one of my go-tos in Chinatown, and I will sorely miss your food when I leave. If you have to get one thing, absolutely get the spicy chicken wings. For $9, you get a huge pile of perfectly seasoned wings that are somehow crispy on the outside and super juicy on the inside. People INHALE these for good reason. When you get these as a take-out order, they even poke holes in the styrofoam container to make sure your fried food doesn't get soggy. They are true pros. I also enjoy their Peking-style pork chops when I'm in the mood for something very sweet and bad for me. The combination rice plates are a good deal for less than $8. The only thing I didn't love is their General Gau's, which needs to be crispier. When things start to feel safer with COVID, I can't wait to come back and try a wider variety of dishes. read more

Great spot for Chinese food in Chinatown, it's easily overlooked as it's on the edge of the district but I would definitely recommend it and come back again for dinner. We got seated in the downstairs area which was calm quiet and spacious. The service was very nice and friendly. They gave us plenty of time to figure out what we wanted and we really did take our time since there are so many options. The szechuan spicy chicken was soft, tender, spicy, and delicious - I wonder what they marinate it in (probably beer?) to make the texture come out so good. I loved the beef and Chinese broccoli, as the broccoli was crispy and flavorful which is hard to make correctly. The beef here (as well as in the chow foon) tasted high-quality, big pieces, very juicy. All tasted amazing and the same as I have been ordering the past 10 years every time I visited Boston to see my family. I've been here twice, once with friends and once with family. While I usually don't order many appetizer-type foods at Chinese restaurants and prefer to cut straight to the chase, I really enjoyed the salt and pepper fried chicken wings. I wanted to get this because the first time I was here, my friends and I got the salt and pepper squid (one of my staples), and it was okay at best, along with some of the more traditional mains we got. This time, I branched out a bit. These wings are fantastic - crispy on the outside, with the salt and pepper tastes balanced and a good spicy kick, and juicy meat on the inside. Coming here with my family to celebrate my grandma's birthday, we ordered stir fried pea pod stems, stir fried choy sum, salt & pepper soft shelled crab, steamed fish, steamed chicken with ginger and scallion, pork chop Peking style, walnut shrimp, and salt & pepper white fish (?). I most enjoyed the salt & pepper dishes as I also felt like I was getting my money's worth with how decent sized their portions are. The walnut shrimp was the most disappointing. It does not come with broccoli on the bottom and comes with the addition of pineapples, something I have never seen paired with this dish. There was not much flavor besides mayonnaise, and it did not come with that many pieces of shrimp. The stir-fried vegetables were alright, they tasted yummy, but nothing too impressive. My parents did not enjoy the steamed chicken as they did not find it fresh, but they did finish off the steamed fish. Came here for takeout dinner. Parking was competitive street parking. Drivers are savages when it comes to looking for parking in this neck of the woods. However, there is the well-known illegal double parking that many people do directly outside of this restaurant. Inside the restaurant, the tables look decently socially distanced with the small foldable room dividing screens. We ordered 8 items of decent complexity and we were told that it will take 20-minute wait so take that what you will about the freshness of the foods. Here is what we got: The crispy fried coconut custard was an awesome appetizer / dessert. Outside crunch with sweet coconut filling. This comes with condensed milk for dipping but there was not enough to dip all the pieces. Recommended. Next, we got the spicy chicken wings. Crunchy on the outside and the spice compliments it. Not much to say about this very common dish. There seems to be an equal amount of drum parts to wing parts for those who really want to know. For vegetables, we got the stir fried pea pod stems. This is a typical Cantonese favorite. This is made well, even though it was a bit on the oily side. Next, the pickled vegetable with shredded duck was our least favorite. It was something new we wanted to try but did not work out. Personally, I don't like the mixing of pickled vegetable on any meats but if you do, you may like it. The dish was saucy with a decent amount of protein. Sweet and sour pork was good. they used a lot of breading on the pork so there may not be as much meat as it looks but I think it provides a good texture with a bit of a crunch-chew. This is a classic dish and the sweet and sour element is just a favorite. I would recommend. Next, we had the Cantonese style shrimp & pork rice sticks. The pork is actually some kind of ham (see picture). The entire noodle dish turned out very boring in taste and looks. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it though. Lastly, we got the "Asian Garden Special Flounder", which I do not recommend over the "deep fried flounder". The only difference is for an extra $13, they will fillet the meat off the flounder and serve on top of carrots and broccoli. You will still get the deep fried bone carcass where you can eat the deliciously crunchy and breaded fins. Seriously, this is the bacon of the sea. But, save your $13 and have them deep fry the fish whole instead. In my opinion, you are just paying for overpriced carrots and broccoli. Overall, had a decent experience. There are some hits and misses. I would come back and try the foods again. read more

Situated a little off the main area of restaurants within Chinatown, Asian Garden is right near Gong Cha dishing out Cantonese style dishes like it's many neighbors. I came by on a Tuesday night and it was quiet around 7 pm with maybe four other tables in the half hour I was there. That aside, it really is your typical Cantonese restaurant in the area with the fish tanks inside and dated decor. The space seemed average with a few larger tables and smaller tables for four. Another review I read said that they had seating in the basement as well, so kudos for that! For food, I tried the salt baked chicken and the beef chow foon. The chicken was served warm, which is a change of pace from regular chicken dishes which are usually cold/room temp. The chicken itself is salty enough and did not need the extra ginger/scallion sauce which I will gladly eat with rice. The chow foon is excellent with the smoky wok flavor and crunchy bean sprouts. Portion size for both dishes were plenty with the chicken around $13 (less than the poached chicken I believe) and around $8 for the chow foon. Boston. You call yourself a city? How is it possible that there is no Chinese food within a mile of Mass General? We had to walk to Chinatown. Well, I'm not that sad about walking to Chinatown, because Asian Garden is pretty solid. I had high hopes after walking in, because there were no white people in here. Two reasons to come here: 1. Affordable asian meal for lunch/dinner 2. The Hong Kong style tea time/brunch! Asian Garden is the most consistently visited restaurant in Chinatown (for me) when it comes to family gatherings. I think the food here is most on point to the food I eat growing up. My default are the deep fried chicken, garlic frog in a pot, black pepper beef strips, peapod vines, duck tongue, steamed fish, and garlic vermicelli on scallops! It's a lot to take in in one sitting, and that's why you come with a mob of family/friends! A plus: you can call to book the entire basement, which could fit up to 20-25 people. The Hong Kong style lunch has a variety of food you usually see in Hong Kong (obviously) and I haven't seen another place in Chinatown that has this menu. The meal comes with a choice of coffee or milk tea. My go to is the D meal that comes with spam, sausage, egg, toast, and ham and macaroni in soup. With friends, I also order French toast with peanut and condensed milk. I found out that they serve this from 11am to 5pm, so you could have this hk style brunch til late afternoon! Asian Garden could get crowded, but it's rare not to be in an Asian restaurant. The staff are busy workers but will tend to us when we needed something. Bathrooms are moderately clean compared to most places in the area. I'd recommend this place to anyone, old or young! read more

My favorites are the salt and pepper ribs, salt and pepper ribs, eggplant and salted fish in clay pot, any fish dish and especially (when they have them) oysters with black bean sauce. This time we ordered the curry beef and rice, salt and pepper wings, eggplant with salted fish in clay pot, beef chow fun, beef brisket noodles, jelly fish and stir fry seafood noodles.
