Was surprised that they charged $20 to put air in one of my tires. Typically this is free at other shops. I was told at checkout that there was a small fee for labor, so handed over my credit card. To my surprise it cost $20 for a teenager to take 5 minutes and fill up my tire with air. read more

A little over a week ago, I competed in the Annual Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb, one of the steepest bike climbs in the world. My one goal for the race was to just make it up the mountain and survive the average 12 degree gradient. To my great delight, I made it. My success would not have been possible were it not for the staff at Ashmont Cycles who fine tuned my bike before the race. Specifically, I asked the staff to do whatever they could to make my lowest gears as smooth as possible and that's exactly what they did. Also, I don't know how they did it, but they preformed magic with my chain. And, while they were at it, they replaced my front tire. As a result, while cycling up the mountain, not only did I have better traction, my bike hardly made a sound. It was as smooth as can be. But it wasn't only the fine tuning of my bike that I enjoyed at Ashmont Cycles. What I really liked was that the staff in the shop were routing for me to get up the mountain. They saw what my goal meant to me and I could see in their faces that they wanted me to succeed. And so, as I cycled up the mountain, not only did I think about my family and friends, I also thought about the staff at the bike shop and what a pleasure it would be for me to tell them of my success. First, I live in Dorchester and I'm grateful to have any shop where I can get my bike fixed. That being said, it's a neighborhood shop. They serve a wide variety of bike needs. They just switched to a new space and it being Boston comes with some humorous unexplained closures because of permits. I had a tubular tire replaced, it took time to order the part but if you asked to be kept in the loop, they will update you, tire came back great. I have a 30-40 year old steel frame bike and didn't know the parts were aged, making my chain slip, as I learned metal wears down when it's used. I wanted to keep the steel look if the parts, but decided enjoying riding my bike was more important than keeping it hipster original. I think what makes great shops is also being a communicative customer and giving a business an opportunity to make it right. I'm very appreciative they took the time to educate me about my chain slipping and my bike rides super well now. read more

I remember when this bike shop was this tiny place on Talbot Ave. They apparently outgrew that space & moved to some newer, fancier digs. They also have more help & more items to sell. It's great to be able to get things fixed & not have it take a super long time either. Although it's pricey there aren't really many other options in the area. It was unfortunate the other bike shop closed that was BIPOC owned while this one profited. read more

Brought my bike here a year ago for an overhaul. They replaced the shifter cables, cassette, both brakes, chain, and derailer. For the most part, the bike is functional so why the mediocre review? The rear replacement brakes did not fit my bike. It never retracted off the rim and was constantly rubbing. Had brought the bike back to the shop and mentioned that my old brakes had no issues retracting off the rim. The shop made an adjustment which did not last and the brake went back to rubbing the rim. I was not going to keep bringing the bike back to the shop so I had to look up what brakes the bike came with and bought my own replacement. After replacing the brakes on my own, the rear brake no longer rubs against the rim. I felt that being a bike shop, they would have realized the rear brakes did not work with my bike. read more

I had a very good experience with Jack. I took three bicycles to his shop. 2 had been gifts and were not great bikes. Jack evaluated all three, carefully taking notes as he went along. In the end, the costs to make even basic repairs on one of them made it not worth it. I like that kind of honesty. He repaired the other two bikes for a very fair price in my opinion. He was able to do so very quickly too...I think one day Since I can be chatty, we had a nice talk and solved 7 out of 12 of the worlds major problems to boot. He had some very good options for used bikes at what seemed to me good prices. These options were much better quality bikes than the Walmart throw away bikes. Nishiki and Trek I was going to go back with my son to look at a few options but for 11 years old, he is very big and could fit on my mountain bike (which Jack had put a new tire on), so I gave him that. So do not hesitate...Ashmont Cycles is great! read more

I took my nearly brand-new Fuji bike in for some adjustments to the squeaking brakes and have some security skewers installed. I also wanted to have it looked over by professional eyes to make sure everything was initially assembled correctly. I had talked to a couple other shops and got some mixed information. I was a bit reluctant at first because I don't have much bike shop experience and most every bike shop I've been in had the somewhat-typical hipster, obvious bike nuts for staff and the guys at this shop are just normal guys like you and me... (somewhat stereotypical of an observation, I admit but I have to be honest with my previous experiences because the staff at those shops were very dismissive and often not very helpful or informative for someone like me who isn't a bike expert) I say that because these guys are on their game! Every person in the shop was highly knowledgeable, incredibly helpful, polite, and professional. I was more than pleased with my experience and the guys got my bike tuned up like a champ! They could have taken me to the cleaners and recommended a full tune up plus adjustments, parts and install fees and all that, but they charged me an incredibly reasonable rate to take care of my bike and it was done super fast. Great Price I borrowed a bike from my cousin. On my fourth ride, when I adjusted the twitch hardly to the point breaking it and fell apart. I had to get it fixed before return. I was afraid it would be expensive, because buying the part and plus labor cost here was (sometimes) almost half of the cost of new bicycle. I checked online, found this place, and read some good reviews, then called them to check the fee first: they said it estimated $27 if it was broken. but luckily they could fix it without replacement. After fixing the twitch and also adjust the gear as well, they charged only 5 bucks. Awesome! Definitely to go back and recommend to everyone!!! read more

Just upgraded my 9-yr-old son to a bigger, faster & snazzier bike here -- as usual, a treat from start to finish. This is my favorite bikeshop in all boston!. The service is great, prices fair, and staff excellent!. I went there a while ago to buy a chain tires tube and all the stuff needed for the season. They installed everything and their prices and labor prices are really good and cheaper than other places. They are really honest and will really take your business seriously. I recently put on lay away my first new roadbike a fuji sportif 1.7 and I cant wait to get it!!, these people are so nice and good that even after moving from boston to malden im still coming back to them beecause they service is great. These guys are, quite simply, the bees knees. They are very knowledgeable of their trade and are efficient as they provide quality service! The shop also sells some basic accessories for bikes from bike bags to locks to sports bottles etc... I think the prices are fair considering the service that you are getting. I was super happy just to get my bike tuned up which included having my handlebars adjusted, my chain oiled, one of my inner tubes replaced, and both tires pumped with air. The gentleman that was working on my bike also helped me get my seat to an appropriate height for me which both my brother and I had issues doing so with my son's seat on the back. One of the biggest pros for me is how local Ashmont Cycles is. I've always been referred to Jamaica Plain for my bike woes and getting a bike and a toddler to JP on the T was just not anywhere near being on my list of things I'd like to do. Went back for a tune-up and another flat repair - woohoo! I told them to make sweet sweet love to the bike and give it all the attention it needed. They put on new brake pads, a new chain and back cassette, and fixed the flat all for a price that I thought was more than reasonable on their end. Nice, honest, and fair-minded people... ...AND they have a sense of humor. I brought my bike back because I deflated the back tire, couldn't get it inflated, and felt like a moron for not being able to figure out why. Turns out it was my bike pump and, after discussing a few options, we decided on a $1.59 doohickey instead of a totally new pump. I told them they could laugh in my face for my bike ineptitude and they responded: "Oh no we wouldn't do that! We'd laugh behind your back." Please do. Once again, I'll definitely return here. Wow. I came in looking to buy a bike just to tool around the city on, and Jack treated me like I was Lance Armstrong. : ) He spent a lot of time answering my novice questions, showed me 3 or 4 different bikes, including one that was deeply discounted even though I told him I was ready to spend twice as much. I ended up buying the bike that was on sale because it suited me best, and then my husband ended up buying a bike for himself. That's how welcome we felt. We bought a bike rack for our Jeep which Jack installed on the spot, and his team mounted our basket and bike lock holders while we ate lunch next door. If you need a bike shop, this is the place. I came looking for a bike just for the summer to ride so I got an old bike for $200. They led me to believe that this bike was still in good condition and reliable. The first time I rode it the back wheel started to rub against the frame and slow me down. When I tried to return it a month later, they said all purchases are final and there are no returns. I don't appreciate that I got scammed by these guys. You're better off going to an outdoors store and getting a good bike rather than from this place. read more

Really nice people. I bought a CL bike that needed (I thought) a shifter cable replaced. I talked to them on the phone, and they said to come on down and they'd replace the cable and housing for about 20 bucks. I went. They determined that the integrated shifter was actually broken. They tinkered with the integrated shifter for for about 10 minutes in an effort to repair it. They determined that the integrated shifter was junked. They put everything back together so I can ride it with just the rear gears for the time being. They told me what to look for in an ebay or CL replacement part, because retail for the part is more than I paid for the bike. I tried to pay them for their labor. They declined. I said I'd bring it back when I was ready to repair. They said great. The exact opposite of wheelworks snooty. Similar (but better) friendliness as Harris and also a bit cheaper it seemed. Absolutely my new go to LBS. Fuji road bikes. Commuting and BMX brands that I don't remember. On street parking is easy. read more

I came to this bike shop because I am new to the area and was trying to find something close to home that could fix a broken shifter. They staff is really nice and from what I can tell knowledgable of bikes. They are geared more to novice cyclist and fixing/tuning up what I like to call Walmart bicycles (POS, commuter bikes, garage sale bikes, etc.). If you are an experienced cyclist with a $2500+ ride I wouldn't recommend this place. I took the chance and they fell short. I gave them 3 stars because they were helpful, friendly, and fairly priced, just not the most appropriate shop for what I needed. read more

In an effort to get moving, during COVID, I dug out an old Trek bicycle and brought it to Ashmont Cycle to see if it was salvageable or if I needed to buy a new bike. As I approached the door, walking the bike, a young man RAN to the door to help me into the store (always a good sign when you're my age). I told him I'd like to know if this bike is OK or if I need to buy a new one (I know - opening myself up to a dishonest broker). I fully expected to leave the bike and be told later than it would cost $$$ to repair (or I'd need a new bike). After about 15 minutes of yanking on and filling the tires, Conor walked the bike over to me and said "this bike is fine" I said (opening myself up again) "does it need a tuneup or something?" He said "no". I couldn't believe it! I bought a lock and a basket (I felt like I had to buy something) and was on my way (and Conor helped me out to my truck). They charged me for the lock and the basket but nothing else. Even though I live in Dorchester, I almost didn't come here because of the negative reviews, but I am so glad I came anyway. As I was waiting, I watched the employees work with other customers and they were respectful and knowledgeable with everyone (including the, apparently, down on his luck guy looking to borrow a pump). I'm really pleased to have bought my bike at Ashmont Cycles. I came because they carry Linus bikes - a sharp looking and practical line for the everyday commuter, harder to find than your average Trek, but totally worth searching out and test riding. But I'll come back because it was just such a pleasant, friendly, and inviting place to shop. Great atmosphere, the owner seems like a nice guy who really likes the bikes he sells, and there's a real sense of community spirit, which is nice. Also a plus - lots of useful accessories stocked for someone riding for pleasure or utility, instead of just the usual flashy race gear. read more
