Probably one of the biggest stores I've been to that balances play tables and product. Parking can be an issue on busy days as there are only a limited number of stalls around the building, however there is a lot of street parking depending on the day in the community behind it. The gentleman at the MTG area in the front was nice and friendly when we entered and we were amazed to see how many people were playing on the tables that day. Was really impressed by the amount of tables available to sit down and find someone to play. The bar was even cooler and I'm sure gets used quite a bit on tournament days. Very new to the card game world but from the people working there to the OP TCG community there it was a very fun experience. $10 to get in the tourney which sounded normal. Friendly staff. I was hoping to see a bigger collection of board games here, but they have a good amount of both newer and popular ones. Magic the Gathering is quite popular here. They have events every week. No outside food is allowed, but the bar sells some drinks and snacks. I liked that they had free games to play, and they don't charge admission fee. They have a lot of games that are free to play! I learned how to play Photosynthesis. It would be nice if they freshened up the place because it smells musty further into the store. read more

Don't come here for an prerelease events. It is very disorganized and handles improperly. I was told it was going to be first come first serve so I handled it as such. I arrived 2 hours prior to the registration starting. I was sadly turned away as the spots were full to people who got there only 5 minutes before. Future prerelease events should be more organized. I had a really good time here! I hosted a games night for a social group that I'm in and we were able to find a few big tables very easily. I was nervous because it was the same night as the Magic tournament but it all worked out. They have a bar area that has drinks and snacks available for purchase and they also allowed us to order some pizza to the store for our group. I really do like this place. It's super cool inside. There's a bar with a lot of selection. Lots of open spaces to play. It's a really cool space! My big irk is that I'm not a regular and I feel like they could care less about new people coming in instead of making them feel welcome. I've probably been here 10 times. At one point I went every Friday to draft MTG. After maybe the 5th or 6th week I realized the customer service, or rather the staff, could really care less about you. I was getting my packs and paying at the register and the guy said, "oh, first time here huh?" And I said, "no dude, you've checked me out every single time I've been here for the last 5 weeks." He didn't say anything and started talking to another person. Like I didn't even say anything at all. Cool man. Needless to say I've been back 1 or 2 times. Hey, I'm not trying to be rude or anything but if you've played magic for a while or ever extensively, you know some people are more introverted or are there to meet people and have fun. This experience along with quite a few others where I walked in, was the only person or there were only 2 other people in the store and I couldn't even get acknowledged, made a lot of sense when he didn't recognize me. He never cared enough to even say, "hello, welcome in!" It's a shame. I really wanted to come here regularly and give them my money. Long story short, the store is cool and it's what you'd expect from the patrons, but the employees from my experience aren't friendly. read more

This is the first card shop that I have felt is very welcoming to new TCG and board game players. A lot of shops I have visited have been quite dismissing of new guys showing up to play but I felt right at home here! Everyone is very friendly and helpful. They have a bar with drinks and snacks plus have play-mats for you to use in case you did not bring one. The sealed product is about what you can expect to pay from a live shop but I would say it is worth it to support the shop you frequent. They have a bunch of free games to play so you can learn some games without having to pay any sort of admission fee like in some other shops. So this is quite a good shop if you are coming in just to see if the community is right for you. I will say that you do have to be a bit outgoing to make some new friends here. The people seem to be rather focused on what they have going on so if you want to make new mates, your best option is to approach groups and try to make small chat. Overall, this is not a place where the store expects you to drop a certain amount of money just to be there. This is a shop where you can just sit down, play games and have fun. Otherwise it will be quite hard to feel welcomed. The environment is very relaxed and I can safely say this is where I will be playing Pokémon and MTG from now on. I have also decided to learn Digimon here because I was introduced to it here at the shop. The MTG community seems to be one of the more popular groups that play here but it is open to Digimon and Lorcana plus a bunch of other card games and board games. So while you do not have to play these games in specific, it helps a lot to find tables if you do happen to play these games. Parking is quite limited so keep that in mind and please be courteous to other players and staff! First game store I have ever started going to regularly. I went to a few in the Houston area and, by far, have had the best experience at Asgard. Friendly and VERY helpful staff. They definitely know their stuff. Awesome selection of products. They even have a bar with drinks and snacks. The employee doing inventory ruined the experience for me. I went from being very excited and in awe at the beautiful gaming space, to utter disappointment at how unhospital the employee was. I didn't get a greeting, and all of my questions were met with snarkiness and a "figure it out yourself" attitude. I wanted to buy a deck box and after he registered it I stood it up to let him know I was ready to make a purchase, after telling him I was interested in buying the product. Only for him to cold shoulder me and take the deck box I wanted to the shelf. Maybe it was just this guy, but he made me feel unwelcome. Their MTG selection is pretty limited. They have a good amount of rares and mythics from various formats, but the only sealed product they have is from Ikoria onward. Not much appeal for players who play eternal formats besides a beautiful gaming space if you want to bring friends. Maybe if I dealt with someone who understood basic hospitality and customer service, I would rate MUCH higher and be a returning patron. As it is, I want to give them another chance on a night where they are hosting an event. I will make another review on how my experience goes then. read more

So yelp I have neglected you... I first must apologize for not writing as much as I used to but I have been cheating on you...and that mistress is MAGIC THE GATHERING. There I said it. Who do I have to thank? ASGARD GAMES!!! DAMN YOU!!! (in a good way) Once I get going on something I go all out. Photography, cycling, running, whatever. So like magic it was no different. I got so hooked I attended the prerelease of the new CORE SET, Magic 2011. If that means nothing to you, stop reading now. Well the release was great! I managed to place 10th? out of 50? Numbers may be a bit off, but the event went wonderfully smooth. Will, the owner, aka skinny magic playing Jesus, is the man. He's put an old school neighborhood gaming shop right smack dab ITL. It's right across the street from all the Pappas restaurants. This makes for a perfect gaming space, which there is lots of because as you get hungry you can walk to get food. Perfect for people who get dropped off in the morning and their parents get picked up in the evening and people who are like me who are too lazy to move their car. The place has everything for you to waste a whole day. All kinds of models and card games and lots of playing space. He has boosters, singles, rares, uncommons, you name it he has it, if he doesn't have it he can get it. As far as rulings go this is you go to guy too, he's the gaming guru as you might say. I love Asgard Games new location, Will and the whole crew have outdone themselves with a top quality game store for the Houston area. The new location has a ton of space for gaming, for parking (which was an issue at the old location, but not anymore!) and dang does that A/C work well. Some sound dampening might help with the loft ceilings and concrete floors, though I hear that is coming soon. The lighting is great, its very clean, the staff is friendly and they've got a great selection of table top and RPG game materials for a huge variety of games! I'll definitely be back down for a Warmachine Houston or Pathfinder Society game day soon! read more

So I went here to buy a Tiamat mtg card. There was a white person with long hair working there, at first he was very nice but then became a total douche when I asked about a specific banned card that they were selling. I really wanted to get it but he made it very un pleasant. I really wasn't paying attention to what he said cause I really wasn't trying to start a scene with him so I let it slide. Either way the place is a great place and great for having mtg singles. Come check it out!! Just watch out on asking for banned cards. I've heard a lot of good things about this place, but none of them turned out to be true. Asgard Games is a textbook case of disappointment. I wasn't greeted by any of the employees when entering the store and was completely ignored when I asked for help in finding something. The guy behind the counter didn't even respond to my question or look at me. He just went off and did his own thing. As far as their selection goes, I was expecting a lot more. From what I was told, they carried Osprey reference books here. However, these books are nowhere to be seen. I don't know much about tabletop gaming, but everything I saw belonged to the same game. The trading card selection they talk about is also highly exaggerated. Despite all it's shortcomings, this store is very clean and the gaming space is excellent. I saw a lot of people playing at the tables, but you wouldn't notice them with the amount of space they have to play in. In fact, Asgard almost feels a bit too spacious! Now if only the same thing could be said about the parking lot. Parking is a joke here! The parking lot is smaller than your average driveway, it's practically non-existent. If you want to park, you have to park in front of someone's house at the end of the block or have someone circle around while you visit the store. Overall, my experience here was short-lived and more than disappointing. I can't say that I recommend this place and I can assure you that I will never come back. read more

Asgard Games is not just a fantastic place to find and play games, but it's fantastic in a way that I can now fully appreciate. Back when I was in high school, I could easily eschew such details as comfort and cleanliness, because all I needed was a place with a few tables to play Magic: the Gathering. Well, now that I'm older and wiser, the comfort and cleanliness of a store actually matter to me, and I've honestly never seen a nicer store, in a nicer location, and with a nicer setup than Asgard Games' new location on Shepherd Dr, right in the middle of Houston. A few years ago, I would have told you that the economics of brick-and-mortar games shops made them infeasible, but now I need to thank Will for restoring my faith and completely proving me wrong, by doing a fantastic job of not only maintaining but also growing his hobby and passion into a thriving business. Asgard Games is large, spacious and clean, located in a new construction, and with ample parking in a private lot and abundant street parking a block away. Due to its central location, it's able to attract plenty of patrons to a long list of weekly events (which can be found on its Google calendar), and it offers generous store credit for winning tournaments that then keeps its sales brisk. Now, the prices for a brick-and-mortar store are necessarily higher than Amazon, but Asgard Games has more than enough customer loyalty to keep patrons spending money to support their local gaming store. In the end, I've honestly never seen a better store than Asgard Games, which is an easy sell for anyone inside Beltway-8 who has a passing interest in games. Some might complain that the employees need better customer service skills, but then this a game store, not a five-star restaurant, and the gaming community is known to be an exceptionally whiny lot to begin with. This store has a great POS system, an efficient and business-savvy owner, and a loyal customer base. What more could you ask for? read more

Asgard Games burst on to the scene in Dec of 2008 and they show no signs of letting up. The owners Will and DJ are great owners and business men. They have filled a void in the Houston gaming scene that most thought would not work, and in an expensive part of town which makes it centrally located. Asgard Games offers a collection of rare and eclectic board games, along with Warhammer Fantasy and 40K. They have the largest collection of Warmachine miniatures that I have seen in any store in Houston. They support Flames of War (a WWII table to miniature game) and also have regular Table top RPG games that they host. Friday nights are Magic the Gathering Draft nights with FNM going on. You can find a magic game any day of the week. This place is my "Bar without beer", or my hang out where I can get my geek on. Come on down, the staff and all the patrons are inviting and you'll feel like you have found your second home in no time. Asgard is my group's go to game shop when we need lots of space for huge boardgames. They have a lot of tables available at all times and usually you can snag the private room if you call ahead. You can also meet a lot of people there if you're looking for some new additions to your group as they have board game nights, FNM, and tabletop gamers that come through regularly. I do wish they had a bigger board game selection, but that's just because board games are the only hobby I'm into that they offer. This place was amazing...on the surface. They're very well stocked regarding board games and the more popular miniature lines. Compared to what I am used to, it's a paradise. There were plenty of tables (ALL taken by M:tG players :( ) each with a card mat on them, a couple of big miniature tables, and even a bar in the back corner for more adult refreshments. It would be a five star location--and here is the but: they obviously gave short shrift to one of their advertised events (an X-Wing miniatures tournament held EVERY MONTH) to cater to the obvious cash cow juggernaut of M:tG. Hey, I get that. I'm greedy too. But I am not a regular...I was in the area for a family visit and set aside a day for the X-Wing tournament...that didn't happen. I was not too upset, but this was a major deal that could have been aggravating. So, -2 for that. Otherwise, an outstanding establishment. read more

I stopped in here to pick up some mini figures to paint, not to play tabletop or card games, so i cannot comment on the gaming aspect of the establishment, only the customer service. I came in and looked around for 10 mins, just browsing and admiring the figures that were on display. When i finally went to make my purchase i stood at the counter in plan view with some items in my hand for around 10 minutes. I had time to kill, so i wanted to see how long before someone helped me. Finally a girl came from the back and asked if i was ready to check out. she went in the back and got some guy to take my payment. I hope this was an anomaly and not regular practice at the shop. I have been to many many stores, gaming shops and 99% of time someone comes over to talk with me. There were maybe 5 games going on at various tables and none were being refereed, so not sure what the delay in checking me out was. i'll give 3 stars for now. i will go back and see what happens next time and update my review. read more

Bought some cards online, they sent it very late and when I got it was the wrong card too. Would not use them again.

I was a regular for a while but had to stop. Drafts are run terribly and often go overtime and mismatches occur all the time. Customer service is pretty bad in general IMO. I pre-ordered some boxes of stuff and they failed to allocate enough copies. Then when they got a new shipment, they sold the boxes to friends the knew instead of fulfilling preorders. Could have just been disorganization but not happy with my experience and can't come back. read more

There were lots of gamers there (which was cool) but they were all doing there own thing and no one even even acknowledged me. Happened upon this shop by chance. The wife and I are just getting into board games and this shop came as a pleasant surprise since it's so close.
