Magically, this turned out to be my 999th Yelp review, making my visit to Magic's Cauldron feel even more special. I originally discovered this shop after reading reviews while visiting witchery in Galveston, and it has been on my Yelp bookmark ever since. I finally made the trip, intending to browse, compare prices, and check out the selection. Instead, I left with something far more valuable. The highlight of my visit was meeting Matthew. He was incredibly welcoming, professional, and genuinely passionate about what he does. Our conversation was magical. He shared thoughtful suggestions about different rituals and spiritual practices to explore, along with several excellent book recommendations. Whether or not someone follows those practices, his willingness to listen and offer encouragement left me feeling lighter, more hopeful, and in a much better frame of mind than when I walked in. Another highlight: This shop does not try to compete with their competitors which shows great character, they will also recommend other options that more cost sufficient and inexpensive. This part keeps me returning, as well, as the shared knowledge from Mr. Matt. I've now visited the shop twice, and each time I walk through the door, I'm hoping to see "Mr. Magic Matthew!" His warm personality and genuine customer service make every visit enjoyable. The store has wonderful atmosphere, a great selection of metaphysical items, and staff who truly make you feel welcome. For me, this is an easy 10 out of 10, and I look forward to visiting again. There's a lot in stock here and it's one of the only spiritual stores in Montrose. But the staff are just rude people. The first time I came in, I was the only person in the store. They didn't greet me, they kept talking to each other, and never acknowledged me until I came to check out. And when I did, and I was polite and asked about their days, and they were quick with me and rude. Came again with my girlfriend and they never greeted us. The energy is so bad. You'll feel it if you curse yourself enough to walk in. read more

I came in with a few questions about different topics and I was pleasantly impressed with how each one was answered and in a way that was very comforting. There is a lot to see here and if you're not looking for something specific then you could really get lost in this place for hours just reading everything and it's so interesting. Prices seemed pretty reasonable to me but I don't have a lot of experience with the pricing of this type of thing. We were there for candles and information. We left with much more than that. Pretty cool place. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by the staff and the scent of aromatics hit you. It's really calm in there, kind of like being in a yoga studio but not really. There are statues of idols, crystals, and spell books. As well as other kinds of literature on the occult. I wanted to show my partner how it feels to be in a Harry Potter movie haha! The staff is very knowledgeable as well as sudgesstive when you ask. Needless to say I purchased some magnetic rings that are pretty cool. I would recommend this place for those magic enthusiasts. If I could give zero stars I would. Went in with my fiancé a while back and wish I never did. We took a look around the entire store, and picked up quite a few book/crystals. I guess because we had never been there and wanted to look through the entire store we looked like thieves to them? A couple of the men behind us made remarks under their breath calling us theives as we checked out. We felt racially profiled and downright upset that we even spent money in this shop. I have found their staff very friendly and informative. I was on my way home when I saw this place so I made a U-Turn, excited to see what they had.. a lack of customer service is what they have! I was in here for a minute & neither of the 2 staff members I saw who saw me come in bothered to say anything or greet me in anyway. As I'm walking around the store I stumbled upon this big a** old dog laying there like he's given up on life. It was unappealing and he was blocking my access to some of the merchandise. This store is for the "Wiccan" community, not the Gods & Goddesses of the Earth. (IYKYK) If your ancestors are guiding you to do the work allow them to guide you elsewhere. Spend your money where it will be appreciated and get your tools from a place where the intentions of the owners align with yours in some way. read more

Only reason i'm not giving 1 star is because of their selection. They have lots of cool things to look at, despite everything being overpriced. Some crystals are incorrectly labeled and not genuine. I've been several times while living in Houston, and I just keep noticing negative things about this place. The staff are not rude, but not friendly. People don't greet you when you walk in, don't ask if you need assistance, and will converse loudly amongst themselves. You have to ask for help if you need it. When you do, you're usually met with snide, judgmental, unfriendly staff who act like you're bothering them and they'd rather be anywhere else. Horrible energy. Every time I've bought incense here, they stink when I burn them. Just go to another spiritual shop. These people are apathetic and racist/discriminatory and there are plenty of other shops that deserve your money. read more

I used to visit this store all the time. I'd been going here since it was on Westheimer, during the days of WestFest. I don't know if I've gotten more knowledgeable or they've gotten more racist, but between the "thin blue line" sticker on their door making it plain that people of color aren't welcome or the horrible attitude of their staff, the place has definitely soured. I went in with a friend of mine who happened to not be white. I was attended to pleasantly by a large man with a beard behind the counter. She was ignored and the guy rolled his eyes when she asked questions. Pixies Intent is further west, but worth the extra trip to attend a space that is truly welcoming. read more

I've been here a few times. At first I liked it for their large selection of herbs and candles, although I felt it was very overpriced compared to other shops, especially their crystals. Their crystals are tiny and some don't appear authentic (heat treated amethyst sold as citrine) but still pricey which just feels like a scam. I've always had issues with their parking situation, but I guess living in houston I can't judge that as everyone's parking lots suck. Then there's the dogs. I don't mind that the owners let their dogs roam, it's cute, but they don't clean up after them at all which is a health and safety hazard. Next is that they support blue lives in a part of the city with a large African American community, knowing that police officers target them. They also never fully complied with COVID regulations, they enforced masks when Harris County required them, but you could regularly see employees taking them off. The last time I went in there was in May and no one had masks on. The employees were also sitting in a circle together spouting racist and ignorant remarks about cultural music they had recently heard. I immediately put back everything I had in my hand and left for a different shop. I hadn't planned on leaving a review, but upon seeing how the owners harass other reviewers with more ignorant comments as well as claiming that anyone with a negative opinion of their shop is a troll, I felt compelled to finally share my experiences. The universe doesn't take kindly to nasty energy especially the energy this shop has, it won't last. Going in there you just feel all your energy being drained and no metaphysical shop should make you feel that kind of dread. Save yourself the trouble and money and shop at any of the other metaphysical shops in Houston. read more

I am glad that I am not alone in my experience with this place. I came to visit the shop when I first started practicing from a recommendation from a friend. I was a bit scared and a girl did help me with picking a book but another gentleman also recommended me a book as well. I bought both and the girl gave attitude and said " oh your getting that one too". As I was leaving I heard the girl under her breath say " I bet she's not even gonna practice. My heart is sad as I write this. I want to love this store because they do have a lot of items but I get a feeling that the staff doesn't really prefer clientele who are...people of color. I try so hard not to assume that people are acting differently towards me because of my race but sometimes you just know. I would ask when they will be getting certain items and they literally would tell me "I don't know" in such a dismissive way or even say, "excuse could you tell me where [this item] would be" and they would pretend not to hear me. I ended up spending a great deal of money at the store (because I was already there) and it was only then was I met with any kind of enthusiasm from the staff. Like I previously said, I didn't want to think that they were treating me differently than the customers around me because I'm brown, but after reading other reviews from POC (who got the same vibe), I probably won't be revisiting the store. Went here for the first time just to have a look. Purchased some herbs, a smudge stick and some oil. Staff was decent enough to me but I did see an example of the staff being more rude to another potential customer. Customer was however intoxicated or high so I'll call a spade for a spade. I saw many POC here that weren't treated worse or better than me and didn't see the staff following them around like other reviews say but that's just my third hand experience. I was left alone to get my herbs together in peace, and there was a lovely lady (poc) next to me doing the same thing without the staff bothering her. I'd say honestly it's the bottom-of-the-barrel minimum in terms of politeness all around so don't get your hopes up. For fellow Wiccans, I would do research ahead of coming to this place. Herbs are well priced, but buy your crystals elsewhere. There's a lot of LARPing supplies here that feels silly to look at, and stuff I'm sure you can find at your dollar store so save your money and look for other small businesses on Etsy for your stones or your local medicinal Chinese apothecary. I found what I wanted, but I'll probably won't buy from here again. Look, I like when the staff leaves me alone and let's me do my thing, but there was the heavy feeling I had that I was a nuisance for being there. The reviews for this place had me terrified that I would experience some of the bad customer service others have spoken about... however my experience was the complete opposite. I walked in and looked around there's so much to look at! No one awkwardly followed me and there was a young lady standing by the herbs who was willing to provide so much information on how to use everything they had. I came for the crystals. They don't have the best collection of crystals but you may come away with something if you need it in a hurry. They have a good selection of incense as well. The selection of tarot cards is large as well. Overall it was ok... you can definitely get lost in here browsing. Lots to see if you are just coming for crystals try another place. read more

EXTREMELY RACIST ESTABLISHMENT, PEOPLE OF COLOR PLEASE BEWARE: My mother and myself visited this store twice, the first visit which was approximately one month ago and the second which was literally a few minutes ago, the first experience was decent and the only reason I say decent is because Matt was the only employee who helped us, the other employees just stared at us as if we were aliens, the kicker was the older white blonde female employee actually bumped my arm in front of the register and didn't even bother to say excuse me as she reached in between me and my mother, my mother and I just assumed maybe she wasn't having a good day. Today we reluctantly visited again, when we stepped into the store the same older blonde white female was sitting at the door and instead of greeting and welcoming us to the store she looked at us as if we had physically assaulted her or wronged her in some way, not one of the white gentlemen behind the counter acknowledged us nor any floor employee, we immediately left the store and will NEVER return to this establishment again,THE RACISM IS REAL AND IN YOUR FACE HERE, THEY MAKE NO EFFORT TO HIDE IT. Was racially profiled and insulted for my ethnic last name while the cashier screamed about bulbous penises, not to mention the rudeness of a particularly old white lady. After asking about how to pick out herbs, this old white lady who wore her mask incorrectly screamed at me to read the directions when the station had not been correctly set up anyway. Absolutely zero sense of sanitation throughout the store with extremely rude employees. This store also supports Blue Lives Matter, and I hope no one buys the overpriced goods from this store. I wish I had seen the reviews of this place before I threw my money away on these people. I can definitely concur that these people are racists and don't deserve a dime of your money unless, of course, you feel the same way. I was happy to have found a metaphysical store in Houston so that I could shop in person. I'm a recent transplant from California. The store was nice enough and had the usual supplies. Unfortunately, I'm not happy with how I was treated, with the exception of the cool guy who helped me buy my necklace. Of the two women behind the counter, one of them followed me after I was given the necklace. I was debating in my mind if I wanted something else, so I had continued looking around the store. She did this under the guise of "bagging" my necklace, then kept hanging around. I had already been in the store for a long time by now, so it was a little late to be "helping" me. So I decided not to buy anything else and we went to the register together. At the register, the other lady was nice enough and made conversation. During the conversation I revealed that I'm a recent transplant from Los Angeles. The other woman, the same one who had followed me, said "Ugh, well don't bring any of that liberal stuff here. We don't need that crap." Wow. Yes, I'm African American. Yes, I'm from California. But, no, I wasn't there to steal. And my politics, irrelevant as they are to shopping for spiritual items, are no one's business. I WAS a customer. I won't be back. In addition to all this, they don't wear masks and it's a small store, so unless you want to roll the dice or have already been vaccinated, that's another reason to leave them be. This used to be a comic book store called Phoenix comics. I went in there once and met the owner... the owner has haunted me since i was a child. I don't say haunted because he scares me, but because I've literally been seeing him around the Montrose area and Houston since I was a child. I call him the Hobbit man... you can find him walking streets of Houston with his staff on a daily basis. And he is everywhere! Its crazy to me that he changed the comic book store to a Magic shop because the owner totally seems like a magical creature. Okay enough of that... The magick cauldron is a great source for quartz crystals, jems, crystal balls, swords, staffs, robes, books, potion ingredients, and basically anything magic you might want! Whether you are a true practioner of the art, or just someone wanting to get some magic stuff, this is the place to go. And look out for the hobbit man!! I was looking at the oil burners (the kind you put a tea light candle in) and saw that they had ones from dollar tree they marked for $15. It was the luminessence brand that is sold at dollar tree. I was unsure about coming here because of all the reviews I was seeing about racism was very alarming to me. I wasn't sure if I wanted to support a place like that but i remembered coming here many years ago and it was such a unique fun shop so i still wanted to check it out again because i was in search of some niche books. To my surprise when I came I did not see any acts of prejudice or racism. There were plenty of colored peopled coming in and out the shop and everyone was treated respectful and acknowledged. No one was followed around the shop out of suspension and in fact the workers seemed to have even known one of the colored customers and I could hear them chatting casually and socializing from across the room. I didn't not sense any negativity towards anyone. This makes me really happy because there are not many shops like this in Houston and I would like to continue supporting a place like this as long as they are kind to all people. (A fat white male)I let him know what crystals I had and how much they were (my last store would ask since there are so many) and he replied " I know". Lol uhm okay? After reading more yelp reviews it seems POC should steer clear and find another store. i couldn't figure out what energy I was feeling while In the store but hindsight is 20/20. I found this place in a google search to find crystals. The shop kind of reminded me of a pawn shop from the exterior. Once we got inside they had an array of new age items, Smudging sticks, wands, crystals, incense, etc. The selection of crystals wasn't as large as I had anticipated and I found the price to be a bit high for the size of them. What kind of creeped me out was the man at the register. He was playing music that sounded like something you would hear on a dungeons and dragons game, and he would periodically scream a little. I wasn't sure if he was laughing at first, but ater turning around and watching him do it again I realized he was indeed yelping ( no pun intended). I paid for my crystals $17 for a small amethyst, clear quartz, and heart-shaped rose quartz. I am not sure if I will frequent this store again, my spirit just did not feel at ease here. read more

I've driven past this place plenty of times and always joked about going in, but I saw an ad in the Houston Press and was like let's do it! I was so glad I actually went in. If anyone has read my previous reviews, I love super nerdy stuff. And in my opinion, it's just cool stuff, not nerdy stuff. There were just so many interesting items in the shop.
