Horrible. Overpriced. Disappointing. Rude. If I could give them 0 stars I would. Found a plaid skirt with the price tag saying $15. Kept shopping and when I went to pay for the skirt the tag had fallen off because apparently they don't know how to properly label things. At the register I told the girl the tag had fallen off and she was like "oh I just priced and labeled that today" but couldn't remember how much and wouldn't believe it was $15 like we said. So she texted the owners and they said the skirt was $25. We found the tag that was originally on the skirt saying $15 and they refused to honor the price they had LABELED on the skirt and instead upped the price because they didn't believe the price tag was the one they'd placed on the skirt. Regular "thrift" stores are WAY nicer. Girl at the register with the blue hair was insanely rude. Honestly not worth the hype, prices, or items they sell. Go ANYWHERE else. read more

Full disclosure: while my friend and I spent quite a bit of time in Retropolis, we didn't buy anything. But the store is so fun to explore! I'm not sure I've ever seen so many sequins, poufy sleeves, lace appliques, etc. There are dresses and outfits from so many decades. This would be a wonderful place to look for Halloween costumes. Because I'm named after a Dynasty character (Alexis Carrington Colby played by Joan Collins), I've always wanted to go full Dynasty Alexis for Halloween. I know that Retropolis would have a dress with lace or sequins or shoulder pads that would help me look as much like Joan Collins in Dynasty as possible! Such a fun store! This place is pretty large; two stories tall and filled with an interesting assortment of clothing, jewelry and lots of other items. You never really know what you'll find and there's lots of unique things. I could spend a lot of time here just looking at everything. The prices seem decent, at least for the things I have purchased. Fun bonus: there is a big fluffy cat that hangs about. (At least there was the last time I went.) I don't think I've ever came here looking for something in specific, but with each experience here, I've walked out with the most random of things: a brioche, a clutch, a Bob Dylan Greatest Hits record... Retropolis is a shopping spot that you can easily fill your entire closet, or just add missing pieces here and there to perfect your wardrobe. I especially love their colorful cowboy boots, purses and vintage dresses. And when I say "vintage," I mean it. I've found that some resale boutiques either just have a lot of old, scrappy crap, or designer pieces that some rich lady just didn't want anymore. That's not vintage - that's just last season! You can find anything for yourself, or a gift that's age appropriate for every contact in your phone. I like the people running the shop too. Sweet with a passion for keeping Houston beautiful (and funky, eclectic, fashionable, etc.) all at a fair price. The only downside is that it can get hot in there, even with just a handful of people shopping around; and yes, there is just too much stuff to sift through. Had a great time shopping here for some 60's vintage dresses. They had really reasonable prices in my opinion, not like some of the other overpriced places you tend to find. Love this place! I've been to a million vintage clothing stores in houston and this by far is the best one. The staff is so helpful and friendly,not to mention, their prices aren't crazy expensive like other places. I've seen vintage Rolling Stones and ZZ Top T-shirt's for $20-$35; and have purchased Army/USMC that I made into crop tops for $25 total. They implement guests and staff masking, and have everyone social distance, so y'all gotta check this place out. Each section has different "artists" clothing, and each has its own unique vibe. If you love vintage clothes from the 40s-90s- head to the back of the store where you'll find pieces from that decade! Go there today, you won't regret it :-) read more

Liked this vintage store, especially since its hard to find a vintage store that actually sells vintage things. First floor has mostly accessories (bags, purses, scarves, costume type stuff, belts, jewelry in cases, sunglasses) along with some random furniture. Take the cowboy boot lined stairs up to the second floor, which is an overwhelming experience. Racks and racks of clothing arranged haphazardly. There is LOTS of interesting clothing to browse through along with lots of shoes, purses, hats, and more furniture. I was impressed by some of their vintage Coach purses which were in fair condition and on sale for prices cheaper than EBay. Not bad. read more

This place is a legitimate scam. Almost every item is marked as true vintage unless it's too new of a brand to get away with it. Half of their selection is any given article of clothing with a trademarked designer logo poorly screen-printed on it, in perfect condition, marked as "Vintage"? Anybody with basic knowledge/training on vintage clothing and how to identify it can tell by certain factors (tags, stitching, condition, etc.) and most of their ""vintage"" items are just Gildan sweatshirts/tees that were altered in someone's basement. There's nothing wrong with wearing fakes but being advertised as true vintage and sold for $45+ dollars is insulting to your customers and extremely dishonest. Could've been a cool little place, severely lacking in integrity. read more

This is a great store to find those last little bits for a costume or outfit that you cant find anywhere else. Dont be decieved by the somewhat small curb presence this store has as its actually two whole stories worth of accessories, leather jackets, obscure tshirts, outdated retro equipment and etc. Though also dont be decieved by this establishment's poor management of inventory; that crumpled ACDC shirt you just found under the 3 different racks of ballerina shoes and cut off denim is actually worth a fortune!(to the clerk at least) The prices arent fair at all, thats the biggest and likely the only downside to this qwirky little store. I love shopping here and hunting through the seemingly endless heaps of 80's and 90's treasure, but honestly dont expect any salvage titles here guys, everything has retained its original shelf value(if not more). The prices have slowly but surely steered me away from the glory, especially with so many other similar shops in the area, but i wont soon forget the magic of my first couple of visits. read more

Come here if you want real vintage instead of stuff the hipsters have cleaned out of their closets. (I'm looking at you, Buffalo Exchange.) Make sure you have time to dig through everything, because there is a lot. Shoes, bags, and random housewares too. It's the kind of place that makes me (mistakenly) think that I can wear, say, a red jumper from the 50's that says "bus captain" across the back. When it's time for a costume for a retro party or Halloween GO HERE! Sure they have some stuff you can wear everyday. But the idea for costumes was astounding. Bookmark this for that if nothing else. From velvet lapels on your peach tux to a staircase filled with some broken in great looking cowboy boots to some nice looking denim jackets and terrific jewelry you just need a couple hours to poke around and look. If you need contacts that look like birds' eyes or spider webs - check. Vintage clutch purse - check Some awesome size 12 men's platform white patent leather shoes - check. Hawaiian shirts - check. Two floors of packed in ideas both for your current closet and for your costume closet. Downstairs is mostly the smaller stuff like jewelry and very non mainstream sunglasses! Then...upstairs. Just when you think this place is a tiny little cluttered accessory place you walk up the big wooden stairs to the creaky 2nd floor. WOW! Clothes everywhere, shoes, hats, costumes. Many organized into decades. Most just ...well...everywhere. As with most stores of this type, you have to invest time in finding your treasures. Dig in! I agree with the previous review that you need to take a deep breath when you walk in because it is a vintage orgasm. Shoes, dresses by decade, coats, purses, accessories, straight up Halloween costumes, anything you can imagine is here and slightly quirky. My biggest problem is coming home with random pieces I could never actually wear in real life. The dressing rooms are just two little curtained boxes, which might be a problem if I'd ever seen it super crowded. I have visited Retropolis several times and can honestly say I have never left without purchasing something. The places looks small and crowded from the outside but it is not. Once you get past the front entrances it opens up and has an entire giant 2nd floor. That is the good part--size, variety and prices which are really reasonable. The bad part, disorganized. This is due to it not really being one big store but multiple consignments. I couldn't figure out why they didn't have like items together so when I heard one of the employees talking about the other consignees, I got it. Another downside is that I don't find the staff very friendly at all, kind of standoffish and indifferent. My daughter and I stood at the counter for a while and finally had to ask to look at some things in the case. One lady was eating a pot pie at the counter and didn't give us the time of day. Just odd. I do thing their variety and volume of selection is worth the trip. Plan to spend a lot of time looking. It took my daughter and I almost 2 hours to go through the place. We always end up finding something, despite the staff's attitude. Another thing about this place is that is feels dusty and I had a sneezing fit when I got to a section that smelled of moth balls, kind of standard things for real vintage which Retropolis is. read more

Devote a few hours to this store; you'll easily spend them here. First of all, I love the space. Old building, wood floors, wood staircase. Wonderful vibe. Lots of shopping niches and cubby holes. Downstairs is easily my favorite floor. Jewelry from costume to re-styled. More clutch purses than you could imagine. Upstairs are the clothes and majority of knick-knacks. Like an exceptionally good quality Goodwill where everything is great. Essentially you are sifting through a huge floor of THE perfect awesome thing after the best thing EVER. read more

Sometimes staff is really friendly and helpful, but sometimes you talk to someone who is extremely rude and acts like it isn't worth their time to help you. This place is not a single store, but rather a space that is used by various vendors who sell vintage clothing and collectibles. It definitely has a bit of a heaped together feel and you really need to spend some time digging through stuff. Neat concept, but don't go here if you are in a rush. The gentleman working the counter was very friendly and helpful. Don't be deceived by how small it appears outside. I didn't even bother going in the first time I saw Retroplis because I was afraid it was one of those awkward shops that you get stared at the whole time you're in it. But it's so not.I love this place! I can't believe it took me this long to find it considering how much I love vintage/thrift stores. First of all, I know it's dorky, but I've been looking for a troll for years. Everytime I find one it's way over priced. They were my favorite toy when I was a kid. I got one here for $3! My husband is a tie fanatic and so I was so thrilled to see all the awesome ties they had. I wanted to buy him so many different ones! They have awesome shoes, clothes, and accessories. This NOT an antiques store. They do have some stuff but I love that it's not stupid trinkets. I usually don't like thrift/consignment stores, but most of my experience has been with the ones along The Drag at UT where things are old, ugly, and expensive. But I desperately needed a petticoat for this weekend to go with my costume, and seeing as it's Thursday, Amazon was out of the question even with a Prime membership. The staff working at Retropolis are really nice and eager to help. I was having trouble finding a suitable petticoat (they have lots that are appropriate for wedding dresses, fyi), so was very happy when a lady organizing clothes offered to help. She led me through the racks, looking for something that matched what I needed. When she did find one, she even mentioned that the owner might give me a discount because there was a tear, and went to ask for me. I didn't look at much else since I had errands to run, but from my brief glance they do have some interesting things and the prices aren't too bad. I'll actually probably be back tomorrow for the authentic kimono I asked them to hold (I love that they hold items overnight). read more

I have found vintage patterns for dresses, roller skates, shoes, jewlery, records and even a petticoat for a costume. I used to all about thrift stores in my high school days. And I meant like for really real thrift stores. This place specializes more so in nostalgia thrift shopping - hence the "retro" in its name. I am not too much a fan of polyester. Perhaps this is why I didn't much love this place. Also paying close to retail for used clothes - yeah I don't care if it's super rare now, blah blah blah - thanks, but no thanks! This store is a very efficient use of space. They've got clothes jam-packed in every which corner and cranny. There's definitely some way adorable stuff, but I just feel so overwhelmed every thumbing through the racks. There seems to be a system of classifying clothes by decade and/or style, but it's all very perplexing to me. A lot of vintage designer wear, but as with all vintage clothing - beware of random stains and shoddy fabric and clasp/zipper/etc. re-working. Dressing rooms - well there's two tiny man-made (albeit, very very poorly) tent-like structures by the stairs you can cram yourself into. Not very stable . . . beware of silly kids randomly lifting up the curtains (like my friend's daughter, it was a bit hilarious though). A really score of a place if you're into vintage wear. Even better if you've allocated at least an hour or two to combing through the mounds and mounds of mismatched/placed clothes. I don't particularly adore this place, but I'd probably head here again if I needed some "dated" dress for a costume party or whatever! read more

Based on the different styles of tags in different areas upstairs, I accept that this may be one seller and not reflective of the business as a whole: I saw many items that were labeled misleadingly. Contemporary style laundry tags, lining, hanger straps--yet marked as 50s and 60s on Retropolis' tags. These pieces were priced lower than pieces that looked to be 'true vintage', making me think it is intentional, and not a mistake. I mostly found mis-labeled items concentrated in the back of the store near the Coors sign, but I also saw it throughout the entire store. It's a VERY fun store to dig through but this left a bad taste in my mouth--it seems unethical. I know authentic mid century fashion is getting to be more scarce but surely there are other ways to move your merchandise than by lying about when it was made. read more
