I rode a motorcycle an hour from Katy since I saw the ad's on social media and the photos on yelp showed a really good looking store - I was disappointed to say the least Apparently you can't trade games in after 7pm like.. are we fr? I just rode an hour with a 5 pound bag and couldn't fit any more games, so I left empty handed. Half the games on the wall were not CIB and being sold at similar prices as CIB in other stores. What a great find! If I lived in the Houston metro area, I would definitely find myself becoming a regular at Game Over Videogames. On a recent trip to Houston I came across this shop since my hotel was nearby. It's like being teleported back to my childhood, not the part where I was a fat kid, but the fun part where I played video games all day (probably why I was a fat kid). Honestly, this place has it all- every consol you would want, every game and even things you completely forgot about until it's smack in your face. The selecton of NES, Super NES, N64, Sega games and more is huge. If there was a game I thought, "I wonder if they have it here?" they defintely did. The guy who worked behind the counter answered my questions and was definitely helpful. They'll even let you trade in your games. In the back they have a museum of video game consols which is small but really cool to see. It's basically the evolution of gaming which is cool to see. It's fun to see how far we've come with technology. This is probably one of the best places in houston to get newish and old games as well as used consoles. Why? Came to get an Xbox 360 and disc specifically to play a certain game on it. After buying Xbox and game I drove home only to find out it had the red ring (meaning the console is complete ruined and I was also told before purchasing it had been tested and worked) so I called them and drove 30 min back to get a Xbox that works only to drive back home and find that the disc they gave doesn't work. Just a huge inconvenience and now feel robbed of the $130 I spent there. But hey atleast they offer store credit for defective items although I've been here once and have 3 DEFECTIVE ITEMS. HOW is that even possible? Last time I'll try to support a local video game store. But hey if anyone needs an Xbox 360 mine is now for sale now. I'm a sucker for nerdy things. In Claire's review saw she mentioned Asgard games, so if that's being thrown out there I was expecting high things. This place lived up to it. It's a bit tricky to find at first since it's literally off the freeway so I wasn't sure which side to be on. It's on the feeder of 59 north right next to cafe chino and Thomasville. The parking can be tight in this strip center but if you're lucky you don't have to walk too far. Once I got inside there were people standing at the counter playing a game. So I continued back and it was like a stroll down memory lane. It brought back so many memories. I saw the sign in the back for the video game museum. It had all of the classics in great condition. They even had 2 arcade machines running on free-play. Gotta love free video games. They had also a couch in the back with some games on it too. They sell tshirts with video game icons on them and offer a consignment area where you can sell your creations or buy local from other artists. They do offer to buy back your old stuff you can get cash or store credit. And there are drinks in the front. Seems like a fun place just to chill and hang out with other people who have similar interests. The prices are fair for old games. Hope this place sticks around! read more

Looking for a retro video game? They've got game ranging from Atari to Wii, but the focus is on the older stuff. Lots of NES, SNES, Genesis, games to be had with a majority of the games under $15 and a size able amount under $10! They also have rare and collectors goodies, though they don't stay in stock long from what I hear based on the answers to people who stick their heads into the store and ask about stuff I've never even heard of. What's really neat about this place is that they are very friendly and open. Little "museum" in the back that has most of gaming consoles ever made. There are two arcade games on free play, old... i mean "classic" games. (Though after setting the high score on one I was informed when they turn it off at the end of the night, it would go away). Also they will let you play any game in the store, not just to test out to see if it works, but let you sit there and just play for 20 mins to be sure you like the game! So let me put this out there for the sake of transparency... the manager is a friend of mine. However, I wouldn't let that influence this review or I would had given it 5 stars. ha ha read more

The manager was friendly and helpful with helping me find games for the NES and even helped show me how to set up everything. It's like this place sells memories of my childhood. Absolutely priceless! I am so happy that I discovered this store. Two aspects absolutely amaze me about this place: 1. The games/consoles that are sold are at fantastic prices. 2. The customer service is EXTRAORDINARY! The employees also seemed to know everything about every video game known to man! I purchased a Sega Genesis console for $40 and a bunch of cartridges. (More specifically, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic Spinball, Streets of Rage 1, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe). None of the cartridges cost more than $20, which is a huge bargain! Now, I do have to point out the games and systems are refurbished, so KEEP YOUR RECEIPT. I had trouble getting Sonic to jump and spin dash when I started playing, so I brought back the system. They checked it out and immediately traded it for a new one. Recently, this store has been becoming super popular, so the higher-demanded games tend to sell out quickly. For example, you'll almost never be able to find Super smash for N64. Service by Luis was super friendly and very knowledgeable when speaking to the other customers. He was kind enough to let me open an iPhone case so I could see it in total. That was pretty cool of him, as I know he didn't have to. If this place was closer to me, I'm sure I'd visit this place a whole lot more. I purchased 2 Pokémon games (Pokémon red and yellow) with 2 systems (game boy advanced and game boy color) bringing a price tag of $200. I went to try and trade them in to get a Nintendo 3ds and they offered me $30 for all products I bought from them. I paid cash for the Nintendo 3ds and kept my goods. The clerk forgot to tell me I needed a sd memory card for the 3ds. So now after I'm comfortable at home I'm wondering around trying to find something I could have already gotten from them. Wow this store is a shrine to all things gaming and gaming retro. They have so many classic titles and assorted merchandise reasonably priced similar to amazon. I also thought the gaming art by local artists was a nice touch if not slightly overpriced. I came in to sell some of my older games and my GameCube. It was like parting with old friends by putting my games on the counter, but it had to be done. 15 minutes later, I get my offer and it was probably about a fourth of what I paid for everything but you can't expect much for resale. The lady was nice enough to break out what was common, uncommon and rare for me. You get double the store credit compared to what you get in cash. Also keep your boxes even for gaming systems because they up the value of your trade ins. I had been sitting on a bunch of random games that I had been meaning to sell for the longest time but dealing with Ebay and Craigslist flakes and lowballers just wasn't something I wanted to do. Enter Game Over Video Games! I went in and Bryan was just flat out cool and did everything he could to offer me the best options and trade advice. I was mainly looking to start rebuilding my CIB NES collection and thankfully they had quite a few nice titles to choose from. I ended up doing an even swap for some choice stuff and I was a happy camper! Of all the game places I have been to, Game Over offers the best trade in value for store credit. Well, definitely better than Gamestop but.. It was upsetting to have to buy Resident Evil 2 for PS4 NEW on Amazon Prime for $29.99 before tax. About two months ago, Capcom dropped their price to $39.99 for RE2, so for about two months I went to this location several times and even called ahead if I wasn't near, waiting for this store to get a used copy of this game. (As they only sell used games) Finally they received a copy. Used for $55. Even Gamestop to this day hasn't budged and is still charging people $55 for used. I showed the cashier how much Capcom was selling this on Amazon for at the time which was now for $36.99 NEW. He couldn't come close to remotely matching the price. I understand this is just the nature of their industry but I was not going to pay just under $50 for a used game. I would have gladly paid $40 for it in-store that day. When I can, I try to support small businesses. Frustrated, I went on Amazon and they ended up having a $7 coupon so two days later, a copy of RE2 is in my hands NEW for $33. Also, Game Over's used PS4 controllers were a few dollars more expensive than Walmart's new controllers. Ultimately I would recommend this place for older games and consoles. Their prices on that stuff seems much more competitive. Also the staff is usually nice, with most of them being very knowledgeable about different platforms of games. I hate writing places I really like such a critical review but I am disappointed by this recent experience as I spent weeks holding off on purchasing this game just so I could buy it from Game Over. With all the competition out there, I would have much rather bought it from them versus some giant company. read more

Wow! What a fun place! It's a retro and modern gamer's dream come true. A friend took me here recently ( a big gamer and anime lover he is) and I was like whoa!! There are games from before my time up to present day and all are at good prices. I couldn't believe all the games from every genre you could imagine. Gamer heaven. If you like anime they have cute plushies and anime characters, too. So CUTE! They even have a really cool "museum" of gaming systems. It was so cool to see what systems were like long ago and to see how far they've come. Very cool to have a REAL used video game store. Gamestop does not count. Come here to get your fix of Atari 2600, NES, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo and every other classic system. The selection is huge at this location. The prices are fairly decent. Sure you can get game from eBay but you often have to hunt and hope you get a good deal. The clerks are helpful as well. I was given a Sega Saturn which I've played maybe once. So I wanted some word of mouth advice on what are the must play games for this forgotten system. They set me straight. These guys rock. Bought a used (1st gen fatty) ps3 from them, only to have it sadly get the red blinking light of death two weeks after getting it. Needless to say, I was majorly bummed. Thankfully, Game Over did right by me. After bringing it back, they offered me a replacement no questions asked. Not only that, but I was able to upgrade to the slim model for only $20 extra. BONUS-they let me keep all the controllers and cables from the broken ps3 at no charge. How sweet is that? Pretty sweet. They even went the extra mile to get my friend's game out from the dead console. After some quick googling, Brian was able to crack it open n get the disc out no problem. You know what this city needs? More havens for nerds! And with Asgard games basically holding down the fort on their own in the inner loop, it's a great day in Geekville now that Game Over Videogames has opened up shop in town! My boyfriend and I had driven past it a few times and just assumed it was another Game Stop-ish place and decided that it would probably be out of business before we could even drive by again. But then we read an article in the Houston Press about this Austin-based chain and got schooled in the fact that Game Over is a game shop that is altogether different in this day and age. Meaning, it's mostly analog, y'all. Remember Funco Land? Yeah, that's where you used to go back in the late 90s and early 2000s to get all your retro games because they still stocked them. GameStop doesn't. Luckily, Game Over is here to pick up the slack! And it does that and more because here you will find games for every classic system ever made and more than enough games and accessories to go with them! Atari, Coleco, Sega Genesis, any Nintendo system...it's all here and arranged in order around the store from oldest to newest. It's like these guys are video game librarians (and I should know because I am a librarian) or something! There's also the Video Game Museum in the back of the store that includes a couple of classic Arcade machines that you can play for free. You can also preview any other game available before you buy it. And did I mention that they have tournaments? Yup, they sure do! So brush up on your up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-b-a-start skills and give it a go sometime. They also buy any old games and systems that you have lying around. The amount you'll get in return is based on rarity and if the game or system operates correctly. And just like Buffalo Exchange, you'll get more back if you take the store credit rather than the cash. While I will say that if you are looking for games for the Atari 2600 all the way up to the new next generation consoles this place is for you. The problem with Game Over is, they are extremely overpriced. I saw today that they are charging $29.99 for Super Mario World for the SNES when you can find it for about $20.00 less on eBay with free shipping. The staff seems ok, but they do tend to only, at least in my case approach you when they feel like it. ( I was standing at the case, they were doing nothing and they never even said a word to me.) They are very rude in this store. They never asked us if we needed help and when we finally asked if they had a Nintendo 64, he went in the back and said oh no we don't when they clearly had one sitting in the glass case. Incredibly unhelpful, go to gamestop!! Update: went back on another occasion with different employees and couldn't tell you the difference in experience. I thought about taking my original post off, but I wanted to show the difference in experiences. We walked in 10 minutes until closing and both employees checked our console, cleaned it, and gave us suggestions and help with our issues. Their catalogue is deep and they even have some imports. If you're into old gaming mags or accessories, they've got that too. Can't find something in-store, look on their website. You can buy or even sell your old games & consoles, but sometimes I can't help but feel slighted on both ends. Their prices aren't bad, but often, I've found that if I look a little bit (the equivalent of a Google search), I'll find cheaper prices somewhere else. This is my favorite place to shop for video games. Their selection for retro games and systems is, hands-down, the best I've ever seen. If you've ever been to an old school video game shop, you'll notice that it's usually in a tiny location, and they charge an arm and a leg for their stuff. Game Over is the unpleasant opposite of this. The first thing you'll notice when you walk in the door is the 8-bit chiptune-style video game music at the counter. In the back, you'll find a small video game museum that features both commonly-used systems of their respective era such as the NES and Genesis, as well as rarer things like the Philips CD-i and Tiger Gamecom systems. As I mentioned previously, the store is pretty huge relative to its competitors, so you'll encounter much more stock than usual. The merchandise for sale is packed with lots of systems and games ranging from vintage products like the Intellivision and Game Gear to modern games/systems like the Wii and 3DS. There are even unopened game systems still in their original boxes! Prices are awesome. For example, an original Game Boy can be picked up for less than $30! These guys are definitely competitive with the eBay sellers, but it's also nice to not have to pay extra with shipping costs. These guys will also offer you a free 14-day guarantee on all of their stuff, and will allow you to demo things before you buy. Good luck getting that sort of thing online. If you have a smartphone and show them that you've checked into their store on Facebook, you'll get a $1.00 discount. Sure, it's not a lot, but what other store can you do this at? Retro video game artwork is on consignment here, and you'll also find other novelty items like Super Mario plushes, and even those cool video game-themed energy drinks (chilled and ready to drink). If you let the employees know that you're new there, they will explain to you about all of the awesome things in their store. I can't believe there's actually a store like this that exists in Houston! The largest selection of classic games (yeah I love the 80's) and great customer service? Everyone here is super friendly and always in a great mood. Gamestop doesn't even greet you when you walk in their stores anymore, much less GRUNT. They have an array of selection from Atari to the present day PS3's, Xbox 360, etc. Game Over also holds video game tournaments, which I hear are ridiculously crazy.
