This place is my new go to for the past few months! Asa Ramen just gets everything right with their ramen. Their noodles are wonderful. Every bite just gets better and better. The egg is everything I could want: extremely well seasoned and cooked to perfection texture wise. The broth is so flavorful and not too salty. As a spice lover, the max spice level is certainly doable and not past the point of masking the great flavor. There's plenty of parking for free. And the restaurant itself is a bit on the small side but I love the decorations! Asa ramen is definitely the definition of a charming hole in the wall. I am happy with my to-go kotteri ramen. Asa Ramen has one of the tastiest pork based broths I have tried yet!!! For a long time I have feared that I only like Hakata style ramen, but Asa Ramen has reinvigorated my search. The noodles were very soft and the broth was rich, smooth, and unagi. I ended up the area the week we were expecting the winter storms to set in later in the week. It was a cold windy night and needed a hot meal on a quiet Monday. Asa came up as first available option upon search. It's a quaint small place. Took a solo seat at the counter. Got the Fried Squid Tentacles and Kotteri Ramen, no extra toppings though I wish I had, but kept it simple for tasting purposes. Squid was perfect crispy fried outside not over done and still tender inside, with baby spinach as garnish. Better to go for a large instead of regular size ramen if very hungry, but the standard still satisfied my appetite. It has been awhile since I had a marinated egg with ramen and will have to try next time here. Broth was good, not salty and strong, good balanced savory flavor. Asa had been a constant in my favorite places for ramen rotation. It's been a while since I had gone to it but I returned recently and was surprised to see they had a B grade. That didn't deter me, though it should have. Food came out, and the pork quality has dropped tremendously. They don't have chashu, they have a slice of ham added to the soup. Since I moved to this area in January, one of my goals was to try all the ramen joints by winter's end. While I failed on my mission, I think I did hit up the major ones on my list and one might be one of the top three in this area. Why does it deserve such high ranking? First of all, the Kotteri shoyu ramen with an added half boiled egg is delicious! The pork may be a little on the fatty side but the noodles weren't overcooked and the broth had so much flavor. Second, a side order of gyozas that were nice and plump, larger than the average with a nice little crunch. Third, the mochi and cheese takoyaki came out super hot but if you let it cool down a little the filling is nice and creamy with a little bit of octopus. Last but not least, they close at 2AM! There aren't a lot of places I know of in Gardena that closes late, aside from Azuma, but this is the only ramen place! I may need to do some type of Ramen Crawl in Gardena and Torrance one weekend to do a final tally but I'm happy with Asa in my 'hood. 4.5 stars total, deducting half a star because the regular sized bowl seems a bit small, but if you're ordering side dishes and beer your tummy with thank you! read more

There wasn't much of a wait (but I came here around 8-9pm) and we were seated immediately. I highly recommend the Kotteri Tonkotsu ramen. The chashu tasted very flavorful. The ramen noodles had the right texture, and the broth was addicting. Other than that, I also really enjoyed the Takoyaki (Octopus) balls. The major charm to Asa Ra-men is the fact it closes at 1am in Torrance which is not known to be the night life center of the South Bay, but most of this area seems to undergo narcolepsy & into a catatonic state not too far into the night. It typically rolls up its sidewalks by around 9:30pm so Asa's hours along with Ume no Ya would be considered radical by the inhabitants of this rather safe but milquetoast burg. (I will be so surprised if there ever is a 24 hour titty bar in Torrance proper in my life time.) The entrance to Asa is pure Japanese kitsch as filtered through a Chiho- (provincial) lens. The gaudy, fluttering banners proclaim Ra-men, Tako Yaki (round grilled batter containing a piece of octopus), Yaki Soba or sauteed Ra-men noodles with veggies & a bit of meat in Japanese So-su or Worchester sauce topped with Beni Sho-ga (julienned red ginger), Ao Nori (powdered green seaweed), maybe Katsuo Bushi (flaked dried Bonito), & mayonnaise. Upon entering, the interior is covered in lots of rough wood fitted into complex, subtle patterns that does not jive with the 'hokey' tsotchkes such as out of season Koi Nobori (carp fish flyers used to celebrate Boy's Day on May 5th), showy, overly dramatic dragon with a large jewel in its claw, unrelated banners & blinds that seem to hang randomly, willy-nilly. If you're a closet interior decorator, Asa will totally turn you off or teach you how not to decorate if you're a newbie. The tastiness of the food & its execution is so much important for me, and seeing on Yelp that Asa's forte may not be so much about Ra-men, I decided to order their Gyo-za and sauteed Shishito- or Japanese mildly hot green chile in the Tosa style. The Shishito- was sauteed with a bit of Dashi Sho-yu or soy sauce infused with bonito broth for Umami, but to up it even more, Katsuo Bushi or bonito flakes were added at the end. The steam rising from the Shishito- caused the Katsuo Bushi to dance & flutter. My only wish was that they use a little less of the Dashi Sho-yu in order to lighten the sodium content. The Shishito- made a good flavour contrast between bites of the Gyo-za. The Gyo-za wheat 'skin' was rather thin & elastic which made the initial mouthfeel pleasant. There were parts that were velvety & parts that were crispy that provided a nice textural contrast. The typical Gyo-za filling is pork meat, finely chopped onion, cabbage, garlic with addition of sesame oil, white ground pepper. However, the filling at Asa seemed to vary from that standard mixture. I noted a subtle tomato ketchup-like undertone as well as perhaps a touch of fermented soybean paste since the filling had a slightly fermented, pleasant, earthy stinkiness. The texture was soft, moist, meaty, Overall, this Gyo-za was better than most other Ra-men~ya in terms of a deeper flavour & mouthfeel. The service at about 11pm on a Monday was efficient & concise. Not overly obsequious, but certainly not lackadaisical. My waitress came by with regularity to refill my iced water. Asa is a great downhome, come-as-you-are joint. If there is ever a craving for Gyo-za in Torrance, Asa is the place to go. Definitely a 3+ Yelp star, and the number grows as the time approaches 1am, and most places in Torrance are slammed shut hours before. read more

The OG, oldschool ramen house of SoCal. This place is run by one of the nicest individuals you will ever meet. He is a Japanese immigrant who pours alot of heart and soul in every bowl he makes. I thought the portions were pretty small, and the taste was just whatever. Not exactly bland but not flavorful either. I went to Karaoke Club Asa . They charged $$$$$ $150 just 1.5hours . I never accept Girl's employees drink but they charged over $50 for Empowerment drink with out our approval. also Asa did not have escort license but Female Employees was sitting with costumer seat and drink a alcohol with customer. So I came here for a quick lunch and I had some trouble locating this small ramen restaurant. Asa ramen is located in a little plaza at the intersection of 182nd St. and S. Western Ave. Look for the restaurant sign with a red background and white Japanese letter because you won't find English spelling of "Asa Ramen". It's a relatively small ramen restaurant. Waitress was okay - she took care of my order and receipt, but that was pretty much it. Kotteri Shoyu Ramen - Broth was flavorful, but a bit too salty. Chashu pork was just as salty as the broth. Karaage Chicken - I like it. Exterior was crunchy and I like the Japanese mayo that came with it. I would give this place a 3.5 stars, but I wasn't too happy with my kotteri shoyu ramen, so 3 stars instead of 4 stars. I only item I would recommend is karaage chicken. read more
