If you are looking for the perfect croissant, look no further. This place was so incredible we kept going each morning. I often think about being at a Parisian cafe, sipping on an espresso with my pinky out, and eating the perfect croissant. Arsicault hit the puffiness, quality butter, flakiness, and crunchy top; the layers were abundant! We literally went there every morning because it was so damn good. The qualities of a croissant we loved (mentioned above) were encapsulated by these excellent pastries, from the plain croissant to the ham and cheese. The flakiness was crazy! It was all over and showed how extraordinary the quality is for a $4 plain croissant! You then appreciate the crispy and crunchy top layer, the many soft layers when you open it in half, to the amount of ham they use in the ham + cheese croissant! The coffee is pretty great, too, but you don't go here for the coffee; you come here for the croissants. Hands down one of my favorite places in SF. One thing to note, with the WFH status many of the companies in SF promoted, parts of the Tenderloin spread beyond that neighborhood. It was disheartening to know so many were displaced, so keep that in mind as you navigate the city if you are a tourist. Many were around this area, but like any other human being, leave them alone, and they will do the same for you (love first). Knowing about Arsicault is almost a curse because I'm unable to go into the city without trying to make a trip around going there. Their croissants are the best, not only have they ruined other croissants for me, but basically all other breakfast pastries because I'll forever be comparing them to Arsicault. It's been a few months and Arsicault's siren's call brought me back today. Got there Thursday around 1 PM. As other Yelpers have mentioned, no parking. I took one Yelper's advice of parking at the UC Law parking garage. $8 for 0-1 hours. With my flawed logic, paying for parking meant that it was more worth it to buy a ton of pastries. To get back into the garage, just scan your parking ticket (don't be an idiot like me - tried pulling on the door for half a minute before seeing the scanner). It was about a 5 minute walk over. Pretty slow time of day for them. I walked in and was able to order right away. Very friendly staff. Two items that I recommend without reservation: Almond Croissant - I think this is hands down the best almond croissant I have ever had. Super flaky croissant. Middle is has a marzipan (?) spread. I believe it oozes out a little and forms a crusty edge. Whatever it is, we heat them up a little in our toaster oven and the result is a true masterpiece. Ham and Cheese Croissant - starts with the amazing croissant base, but with a filling of ham and cheese. I really don't have anything to compare them to since it is rare to find a croissant with savory ingredients baked in. Anyways, same toaster oven treatment, same lick the plate goodness afterwards. The other two items I had were good, but not great- If you Google Kouign-Amann, there are two types of pictures. One looks like the croissant version of a muffin. That's the one I'm used to and it typically has a filling. The other one looks like the croissant version of a danish with no filling. That's what I had here and it's the first time I've had it. It's still really good, but it's basically sugar/butter flavored so I didn't enjoy it as much as ones offered at other bakeries. The other item I had was a Londoner with cheese. First off, you're going to want to double your Poligrip before you get this thing. It's a ton of chewing. I wasn't able to closely inspect this, but it was a nice baguette, maybe 10 inches, filled with a small amount of ham, some butter, marmalade, and Comte cheese. My go to Arsicault bakery is the Arguello location. But since we were headed to theater in the area, I've been wanting to visit this one for a while. It's a lot larger with seating inside and outside and a metal fence around the shop. That is telling considering the neighborhood it's located in. The view outside is unattractive. Massive amounts of cars streaming by and sketchy characters hanging around a few feet away. I grabbed a couple of Kouign Amann to take home, $5 each. They give you a nice bag with handle if you buy minimally 3 pastries. Later at home, I couldn't wait to put my teeth into the crunchy caramelized sugar coating. The body of the pastry was denser than the ones I buy at the original shop. Hubby liked the sandwich offerings and hopes to try one next time we are in the area for theater. Had the blackberry almond croissant, chocolate croissant, Kouign Amann, and morning bun. The KA and morning buns were my favorites--light and crispy outsides with moist/chewy/buttery interiors. The blackberry one was really good too, and chocolate croissant was light and flaky and moist, and still warm! Went on the Friday after July 4th at 8:30am and line was minimal. I've never docked a star for location but this bakery is in a very sketchy spot. I walked there from downtown (new Montgomery and market), down market street and the street just got sketchier and sketchier. So many unhoused people--sleeping/sprawled out in the middle of the sidewalk, congregating together on the side, standing and swaying in place all over market and side streets. It gets progressively worse the closer you get to the shop. By the time I'm half a block away there is just about one homeless person every 10 feet (not exaggerating), plus a couple of city hired security on a nearby random street corner, I'm guessing to make sure everyone is ok. As a single lady walking around, I definitely felt uncomfortable on the approach, but the pastries are so so so good that I may brave the walk again tomorrow as I'm on a staycation here in sf for a few days and may need to spoil myself one last time. read more

Nothing makes me excited like Arsicault. I've gone here alone, I have taken my girlfriend here, and I've taken my family here. It hits every time. Arsicault deserves all of the fanfare that makes it one of San Francisco's most popular bakeries, and with this second location in the Civic Center/ UN Plaza in the heart of the city, their empire just keeps growing and growing, and I am so thankful for that. All of the buttery praise must go to owner and baker extraordinaire of Arsicault, Armando Lacayo, who upon opening his first location of Arsicault almost a decade ago on Arguello Street in the Inner Richmond neighborhood of San Francisco, the buzz grew so loud that when Bon Appétit names them the best new bakery within a year of opening, the lines already solidified their success. So when they opened this location in well let's just say a less than savory neighborhood, especially in comparison to their original location, it had to have caught people off guard, as they could picked anywhere in the city, especially in the Financial District, and they would have been a huge success no matter where they chose to open up. Even if they selected a nondescript building that resides on McAllister Street on the backside of the San Francisco Art Institute. Getting to this location is actually super easy, especially when riding the subway. All you have to do is get off on the east side of the station and exit off the corner of Market and 7th Streets and one block north along a small street named Charles J. Brenham Place and one more left turn along McAllister Street and you are there. The first time I came to this location of Arsicault a while back when they were just about to close at their regular time of 3 p.m., and they didn't have much left in terms of inventory, so I ordered one of their Morning Buns, which cost 5 dollars each, and two bags of their Chocolate Shortbread Cookies, as I was going to meet up with a friend for a dinner and wanted to bring them something, and they really had three options that were wrapped so nicely that I could not go wrong with any option that I selected. My total was 29 dollars before gratuity was added in, which is on the pricier side, but with the products being offered at Arsicault as lovingly crafted as they are, it is well worth the higher price tag. My morning bun was rich with sugar and cinnamon and decently dense, which is just the way I like it, and my cookies were light and airy and the perfect treat with a cup of coffee or scoop of ice cream. With a solid first experience under my belt, and with no line or a taste of their signature croissant to show for it, I made it my mission to return one day, and did so a few months later when I was once again meeting with friends for dinner and knew that they were fans all things croissant, so I went in the middle of the day on a weekday, and found many more items to choose from. This time I ordered a Plain Croissant for $4.75, an Almond Croissant for $5.75, a Chocolate Almond Croissant for $6.50, a Chocolate Croissant for $5.75 and a Bacon Garlic Galette for $6.25. My total was once again 29 dollars, which is remarkable considering how much food I ordered this time around. Their croissant was as good as advertised, as it was buttery flakey goodness personified. The real star was their galette which was their croissant dough topped with garlic confit, Comté cheese and tomatoes. It was like as if a mini pizza mixed with their signature croissant, and I also loved their Chocolate Almond Croissant, which was so dense and flavorful that I cut it into portions and enjoyed it over the course of a few days, as when reheated it was a true sugary delight! I cannot wait to come back to this location of Arsicault, as it's almost as if the owner knew this would be the perfect location for his expanding empire, as not too many people even know they are here, which makes lines more manageable and products more available. I know there's been a lot of hype for Arsicault being the best croissant in SF, let alone in the US But I would say for the most part it is a really good croissant! This location in the tenderloin while a little odd tucked into a corner, the fact that there's seating and more variety is nice, however the lines were pretty consistent and although they periodically restock the front, you don't always know what you're going to get? For example the apricot bostock was on display, but they said the next bostock were blackberry which was fine, but then as we were leaving they had apricot bostock again so I was confused on the consistency? The blackberry almond croissant was a highlight, a good amount of filing and balanced between the fruit and almond, the chocolate croissant wasn't overly sweet with the dark chocolate filling, the bostock was okay, I think maybe because I already had the croissant but I prefer it in that form, maybe the apricot would've been better? You can get a table inside as there's turnover. I know I ranted and raved about Arsicault last time, so what more could I possibly say? Well, I tried something new (to me), and WOW. I think I know what heaven is. I went to Arsicault at Civic Center at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, and unlike the last time when they weren't quite open and there was a line forming (that was a Thursday), the bakery was open and hopping with the end of the line just poking out the door. Again, the line moved quickly (or was it just that the smell of all those baked goods was so intoxicating that I lost all track of time?). I ordered a plain kouign amann, a morning bun, and two blackberry almond hazelnut croissants. First things first ... my new favorite: All hail the kouign amann! This delicious roll of buttery and flaky pastry with a sticky glaze was one of the best pastries I have eaten - EVER. I was so impressed the only word that popped into my head to describe the experience was "heaven." I'm typically not a kouign amann afficionado, so I don't even know why I decided to get one today, but boy am I glad that the impulsive me did. (One of the few times impulsive me did something I didn't regret.) Arsicault also has a raisin kouign amann, which I will have to try, but I can't imagine it surpassing the heavenly original. The best thing about this location is that there's never a long line, whereas the original location on Arguello usually has a 20-40 minute wait. Of course, I have to get an almond croissant ($5.75) every time I come here. I honestly was never really a fan of almond croissants until I had the almond croissant at Arsicault. So I highly recommend get the almond croissant here! Today, I also tried the hazelnut almond blackberry croissant ($6.50), which is only offered at this location and not at the one on Arguello. This was also delicious, and the blackberry really complemented the rest of the ingredients nicely. I love this bakery, but I don't think it's as good as the other location. I think I'm going to continue going to the other location in San Francisco instead! A lot of their pastries were sold out and they didn't have the infamous ham and cheese. I got the Chocolate Almond Croissant and a Blackberry one. They were both super good but it seemed like they had been sitting out for a bit because it was super gushy. There also wasn't that crisp and crunchy feel that I usually get with the pastries at the other location. One of the croissants also wasn't warm or hot at all so they didn't seem freshly made. Location: The store opened up right off of Market towards the tenderloin area. While I would proceed with caution around the area, during the morning it felt relatively safe dropping by. There is not that many parking spaces in the area but very accessible via public transport. Interior: When walking in, you will be hit with the yummy smell of baked goods and coffee. It felt like an amazing start to my day. They have a cute green wall with their picture and you can order right from the display. They also have chairs all along the windows if you want to dine in, but most people choose takeout. Service: The line was not long when I visited and the whole interaction took maybe 3 minutes. Right around the corner from the Civic Center BART station and a bowshot's distance from City Hall, Arsicault Bakery is a gem.
