UPDATE : while i was looking for my rice cooker and hoping i had some rice in the pantry for dinner the restauarant called twice to try to resolve this issue with me. PREVIOUS REVIEW: Ordered from Door Dash. Ordered rice, paid for rice, did not receive rice. Called restaurant and they were unable to resolve so now I have to make rice so I can enjoy my meal. So much for not cooking tonight. You need to check your orders before they leave and where is my refund? $3.44 for rice I did not receive.

My bestie surprised me to celebrate with a beautiful meal at Aroma. The food is always on point. Service happy, friendly and quick. This is our second time since finding this Upland Gem! And it will not be our last! Thank you Aroma Indian Grill for making our evening delicious and special!

When you want it the most There's no easy way out Goat Curry w/ Rice from #Aroma

I was thinking about how the other day Toby told me that I'm like a wine drinker and not a label drinker when it comes to food. I care more about the dish than the style of cuisine. I could say I like seafood, but it'd be more accurate to say I like trout or shrimp dishes. Or I could say that I like barbecue--and it'd probably be the most apt description of favorite cuisines--but you could also say I'm more of a fan of St. Louis ribs, burnt ends, and hot links. It's the same with Indian food. I do like Indian food, but I effing love Goat Curry. It's a top 5 dish for me. It's such a premier dish for me that it's one of the dishes I'll scout for by name on Yelp--along with hash, poutine, St. Louis ribs, and trout. And Aroma has some excellent goat curry. It's spicy, spectacular, and gamey in all the best ways. There's something about the smoky, shreddy, and beefy consistency of a long-simmering goat dish that just does it for me, especially when it's drenched in some seasoned and flavorful curry sauce as it is here. It's a perfect storm of everything I like. It's the perfect dish. The space here, though small, is very comfy and has some great music playing in the background. The same too with all the staff, they make their presence known when you need help but otherwise slide into the background when you're trying to ear. It made for a very pleasant environment to eat your meal in peace. It's yet another great place to get your goat when goat is all you have on the brain. I highly recommend you get your butt in a seat up here sooner rather than later. Eat goat. Now.

Chicken Tikka Masala and... Goat Cheese and Scallion Naan

Craving some good eats on the drive home, I stepped into Aroma Indian Grill to be welcomed by awkward silence, a potential debate about would serve me. Seating was easy, as there was nobody else in the restaurant. Even for a party of one, though, their maroon tablecloths do be staring back at you before you take a sip of refreshing water. I had their chicken tikka masala and goat cheese and scallion naan. (Note: While ordering, you may be pressured to order more, perhaps a drink or two... or another side...) Ordering and service were pretty quick, and the chef quickly came in to check in on how the food was. Chicken tikka masala? Amazing! I'd come back to order this and only this if I did return... I'm not surprised this is one of their most popular dishes! It was well-seasoned with spices, and the chicken was tender. My favorite was the portion sizes - both the dish and the rice - were generous and appropriate. Goat cheese and scallion naan? Mmmmm, this I'd recommend skipping! It tasted a bit bland, perhaps this combo ain't it, or there wasn't enough scallions... or the goat cheese naan was less interesting than expected. Paying was straightforward, though it took a while, since most of the staff were behind the counter and absent after service. Sharing? Definitely possible to finish both as a party of one - I did! Of course, I left with a bloated, happy belly, and I wouldn't expect anything less on my next visit.

One of the coolest things about a speakeasy is the transition into the space. Here, there's a walkway and corner, then turn into the candle and subtle lit space. It's a small thing? But that bit of walk helps distance the mind and feel open to the special space. There is a bar with seating, a long high top, and bench & table booth-ish type seating. The colors are warm, reminiscent of sitting in a western sunset. Music plays - jazzy, alternative, happy music. We were greeted and seated by the friendly hostess, then welcomed warmly by the magic maker himself: the bartender! And what delightfully unique, and dare I say daring, concoctions he made! The cocktails each had a spin, an ingredient, something *different* from the norm, making it challenging for my friend and I to narrow down which delights to try! Even the popcorn was unique, with chili and nutritional yeast savoriness that was the perfect complement to our cocktails. My friend felt the Silver Cloud was quite the adult version of a smoothie dessert! She got ideas...I adored my Last Word. It was refreshing with the green chartreuse and incredibly not-put-down-able. Next up, she had the Bandolier. It was a very unique taste to her, pretty puckery, so the bartender - who checked on us regularly for impressions - added a bit more pineapple. That did the trick! My next was the Boulevardier, which was uniquely and deliciously twisted with the coffee and salt. Absolute yum!!! Even though there's a 90 minute limit, on this Thursday night there was plenty of space between imbibers, and we weren't pressured in any way to move along. Thank you, as we were due for a proper catch up. One thing we did notice, is that once there were more folks chatting and laughing, it became a bit echo-y and harder to hear. On a busier night, I imagine the ambience we first experienced- quieter, mellow, chill vibe - likely changes to more robust and lively. Either way, this place is a feels-far-away retreat worth "traveling" to.

We started with bread service which includes a few different styles of bread along with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. For my entree I went with the clam linguine. It comes with chopped clams, garlic in a white wine sauce and also has a few whole clams in shell. It was so good. It was very "seafoody" which was just what I was craving. I also got to taste the carbonara, which was also very tasty. It had plenty of pancetta and the sauce was rich. Overall a good experience.

Walking through the 80s bar it gives off very clubby and busy vibes so it was hard to imagine a speakeasy at the end of it. I was actually shocked upon entrance and really impressed with the detail and ambiance. It is a small space and keep in mind you may share a table with another group if necessary. The drinks were actually phenomenal. On the pricier end of $22 and up but we're so good. I loved the horror theme play on the cocktail names! The candy man was delicious and my favorite. Service was fairly quick and friendly. The drinks were all sweet cocktails and in the "Matterhorn Lodge" theme. There is a 2 drink minimum purchase (per guest) and each drink is $20+ so it can add up. I'm more of a beer person but some of the drinks were delicious. There was one that tasted like Christmas morning (cinnamon, clove, milky) and another drink that had popping boba that was also fun. If you're a butterfinger or peanut butter fan, there was one drink that tasted like it (you'll see it on the drink menu). I wouldn't say the drinks were strong. They do a good job of enforcing the theme. They had a "Yeti" come out and interact with the tables. Good for photo ops. They also had a magician doing a few tricks, and I enjoyed that the most. The place was kept fairly chilly! Even the bathrooms had jokes and signage on the walls that alluded to the alps. Overall a great time. Small venue but pretty chill. Can be pricey. Take a sweater. Good for dates and small groups.
