How my bearded dragon was packaged up for transport... in a take out container
Amanda H.

As I child, I would always come to Arizona Reptile Center. I remember being fascinated by the wide variety of lizards, snakes, and even gross things like scorpion and tarantulas (ICK). Now that I'm a responsible adult, I felt ready to buy my first reptile. I had many growing up, but it had been a while. The employee that helped me out was very attentive to my needs and answered all my questions. Even when he got busy with other customers or phone calls, he would promptly return to assist me. I really wanted a bearded dragon but didn't know if a baby was the right decision for me. The employee made a recommendation- buy an adult. I literally had never thought of that and they happened to have a beautiful 3 year old beardie for sale. I was nervous about his demeanor, was he socialized? The put my nerves at ease, the employee got him out of his enclosure and let me hold him which immediately answered my question. I put the dragon on hold and left the store to think about it and not make an impromptu decision. An hour later, I pulled the trigger and told him to pack up the beardie, that I was coming back to take him home. Now this is the part that broke my heart, this beautiful reptile was put in.... a take out container. He couldn't move and when I asked about it I didn't really get a great response. What do they do for larger reptiles? I was anxious to get him home ASAP. It's been two weeks since then and he's acclimated well to his new home. Word of advice to potential buyers, you might want to consider having something ready for transport unless you don't care if you reptile goes home in a take out container.

I recently bought my first beardie and ARC is my go-to spot for feeders and advice. The feeders I've bought (roaches, crickets, worms) have all been great quality and I rarely have any die prior to feeding, which has not been the case with other shops. They also have a great selection of vivarium accessories, so as I begin to upgrade my guy to a bigger tank I'll be buying everything at ARC. I love the flexibility of their hours! I work in Phoenix and live in Tempe and they are the only shop nearby that is open between 7:00-8:00pm which is a tremendous help for me. My beardie is a growing boy and some weeks I just don't know how much he is going to eat and have to make a feeder stop after work! Everyone that works there is supremely kind and helpful and are patient when listening to any of my concerns or ridiculously random questions. I highly recommend shopping here!

I don't normally go in reptile shops. I had baby garter snakes when I was a little girl along with my big brother but otherwise reptiles are not my favorite creature. My husband also owned Turtles for a while and I got to like them and was able to watch them eat. The only reason I went in this store was because my daughter needed worms for her Gecko and I was over it Mekong Center pretty close to here so she asked me if I could stop by to get $2 worth. The gecko doesn't eat much so $2 worth last a couple of weeks from what I understand. The clerk handed me a ziplock bag with the worms and I hesitated. He asked me if I would rather have it in a paper bag and I said yes please. I delivered them post haste. I did take a look around out of curiosity and trucks down a gecko just to see what they look like. She just loves her gecko. I decided I prefer kittens and puppies, but if I had a reptile and lived near here I'm sure I would be a regular customer.

AZ Reptile Center is WAY better than Predators. Plus the staff here is super friendly. Not reptile snobs like other places.

They chopped it off because they wanted to and I hate it. My baby doesn't even look like my baby anymore. She loves to chase her tail and rub her long tail on people she loves, she loves when I run my hand along her tail and now she can't! It barely even WAGS! I would understand if it was matted or objecting anything but it was NOT. I brush her all the time, including her tail, and It's curly and sits up so it's not blocking anything or getting like pee and poop on it. ALSO, they admittedly didn't do all of the things I paid for. I paid for the bath (not bath and haircut so why did they even cut her tail in the first place???) and shed release + which is supposed to include double shed release shampoo, blow dry, 15 min brush + second brush, ear cleaning, anal gland expression, nail trim, scented spritzs, teeth brushing and nail buffing. They didn't clean her ears, do the second brush, being her teeth, buff her nails, or do the spritz...what did I pay for then? Lana and I will NEVER return and I wouldn't recommend them to my worse enemy.

The reason for my lower rating is solely based on how the axolotls were housed. I'm not an axolotl expert, but I have read that they can temporarily be kept in small containers as long as the water is changed daily. However, how long are they kept in these containers? That said, seeing them in small containers on shelves near insect and lizard food felt sad and uncomfortable. It reminded me of how betta fish are often displayed in big pet chain stores. From what I've learned, axolotls do best in individual aquarium tanks with cycled, filtered water. I understand that retail space and logistics can make that challenging. An employee did mention they move them once their tail reaches the end of the container, but I'm sure that meant they move them to a bigger container. The water did look clean, so I'm hoping they're receiving frequent full water changes. I truly don't mean this as an attack -- it just made me sad. I came here with family while visiting from California, so not sure if selling them this way is common since they're illegal to own in CA. They're such unique and delicate creatures, and I wish their setup reflected that a bit more. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, because overall it really is a neat store!

I absolutely LOVE this place!…read more From my very first visit a few years ago with my giant English Mastiff (200 lbs ) to our now bi-weekly routine, this self-wash has been nothing short of amazing! The wash bays easily accommodate his size with room to spare, and their recent remodel made everything even better--more stations and great updates all around. One thing I really appreciate is that there's no extra charge for large dogs, which is "huge" for owners of giant breeds. And every time, the staff kindly offers an extra towel to help get him dried off--such a thoughtful touch! The team here is always friendly and helpful. They walked me through everything on my first visit and recommended products tailored to his skin and coat. We now use the de-shed conditioner and I can honestly say--I notice the difference at home... and so does my vacuum He always comes out looking and smelling great. Sometimes we even add a few spritzes of the doggie cologne when available--such a fun bonus! And of course, no visit is complete without him "convincing" me to grab one of their adorable gourmet dog treats at checkout. They're so cute and perfect for pictures or just spoiling your fur baby a little extra. For my budget-conscious friends--Tuesdays are half-off self-service washes (which is amazing!), just keep in mind it can get a bit busy, especially if it falls on a holiday. Lastly, I have to give major kudos to the staff for maintaining such a clean and sanitary environment. You can truly see the effort they put into cleaning each station thoroughly--it makes a big difference and gives me peace of mind bringing my dog here. Highly recommend this place to any dog owner--especially those with big pups!
