The guy working on my car was apparently too busy throwing a fit about someone coming in during their last our to pay attention to what oil he was putting in. Seriously, I witnessed a full on work tantrum that day. Based on further diagnosis since then, he may not have replaced a cap or filter quite right too. All they did was an oil change, but I had to go back for another one at Jiffy Lube maybe 2 months later. They looked up the right oil and it was neither the one they used, nor the one they told me to use. And my car hasn't been smoking me out with burning oil fumes when I sit in traffic since letting them re-do the work I'd just had done at Arbor Auto. I guess it's a good thing that the guy behind the counter never got back to me about planning a real repair I'd been considering making through them. I have taken two different vehicles to Arbor for several years with decent results. My last two experiences have been so bad, that I will never take a vehicle to them again, and can't decide if I feel they are dishonest, or just inept. Last Fall I took my truck to them because it was making an odd noise. They told me it was a belt which they replaced and did a good job on that. At that time, they also told me my cataletic converter was bad and needed to be replaced, and that it would NOT pass inspection as a result. Because they do not to this type of repair, I assumed they were not trying to get me to do something un-necessary. After taking it to a different repair shop, it was determined that my catalytic converter was fine, and did not need to be replaced, and the truck passed inspection just fine. I figured, everyone makes mistakes, and since I had decent experiences prior, I took my truck back it recently to get my AC fixed. Mistake on my part. My AC would cool sometimes, but not others. After looking at the AC, Arbor called me and said the clutch was out and I needed at new compressor. The estimate for this was about $970. which included recharging the system. It seems high to me so I called around and found it wasn't too much out of line. I called them back to see if they could replace the clutch without replacing the compressor to save money and the woman at the desk said she would check on replacing the clutch only and would also call around and see if she could find a cheaper price on the compressor. Later she called me back and said that actually the only thing wrong with my AC was a missing fuse.....when I went in to pick up my truck I was given a written document saying the clutch was stuck and the compressor was not working and needed to be replaced. I am glad they figured out the problem, but had I just said okay when she called to give me an estimate, I would be out almost $1000 to fix something that was not broken in the first place. I expressed this concern to the manager when I went in to pick up the truck and he said that would not have happened because he would have double checked it before the mechanic did it. Really? Maybe double checking before telling me what is wrong and what it will cost would be better. He asked me why I had removed the fuse to the AC and I told him I didn't even know where the fuses are and had not done that. It may have just been the one mechanic working on my truck was inept, but it gives me a bad feeling about the whole operation, and I will not go back again. read more

I don't usually write reviews but I have to acknowledge when I encounter great service with ethics. I'm a single mom with two kids and one is headed to college. So spending extra money isn't an option. Arbor was super helpful in me making a decision on a used car for my daughter, is always upfront about what really NEEDS to be repaired, and doing quality work. Since the warranty on my car has expired, I bring my car here and I'm very pleased. Ashley is extremely knowledgeable and helpful to make sure you understand what's going on with your vehicle. I have been taking both of my cars to Arbor Auto Works for years. Both Mike and Winn are great! They have often fixed minor problems for no charge. I used to take both of my cars to the respective dealerships, but now I am convinced I was being ripped off by the dealers and I have even taken my newer cars to Arbor Auto Works. They look up the suggested maintenance for the car from the manufacturer and they are honest about what needs to be fixed and what repairs can wait. I highly recommend their service! read more

I love Arbor Auto Works. I first went just because it was the closest place to my apartment where I could get my TX stickers. They were so nice and fast I came back for other problems.... They were able to quickly identify and fix various problems with my VW that the dealership up the road couldn't even figure out. They are interested in teaching you about taking care of your car properly. read more

I had my inspection done there a few years and it was fast and easy with no wait, so when I had a problem with my wheels squeaking I took it in. They wanted to charge me the $80.00 to diagnose the car but it was so obvious what was wrong that they didn't but I would have had a huge problem with paying that fee to diagnose and then pay for parts, labor etc on top of that. As per the other review here, no one charges to diagnose a problem with a car! That is a major rip off! I had a brake rotor replaced there and they failed to put all the pieces back together properly so I ended up with a loud noise in the front end which they said wouldn't hurt the car so just stop by sometime when it was convenient to fix. Why they didn't fix at the time I can't recall. Thus I had to go back at another time and have that "piece" reattached properly. the mechanic who had done the work and then fixed it a month or so later, said, "that was a stupid mistake" Duh, why make it in the first place. Here's where it gets even more interesting, and the rip off gets better! At the same time I had the rotor fixed, I asked for an oil change. They told me this was done. A few months later my car is making all kinds of noise while driving, and missing upon accelerating so I took it back. They informed me I was 2 quarts low on oil! I asked if I had a leak and they said no. I told them they had just changed it and why hadn't they put enough oil in it when they changed it. The answer was " We topped it off for you." A few more months go by and I had another problem with the car. I took it back to this shop, and they told me my oil was really dirty and needed to be changed. I replied that it hadn't been that long since they changed it and shouldn't be dirty. At this point, the shop manager told me that they actually had NOT changed the oil the first time when they were supposed to even though they told me they had and I had paid for it! When I had taken it back a few moths after when it was 2 qts low, they didn't change it then either! This info was on their computer history on my car. The owner looked right at me, smiled and lied to me on more than one occasion. He thinks he is slick but his manager gave him away. Why they put notes int the computer that they didn't do the work they say they did and charge you for is quite curious. I took my car to another repair shop and told them to let me see the oil and oil filter they took out of the car when they changed the oil. It was blacker than black and the filter was filthy and disintegrating! Why they charge 400.00 for a rotar repair and $20.00 for an oil change they failed to do which could have ruined my vehicle is beyond me. STAY AWAY from this business. They will scam you in some way and smile and lie to you as they look you right in the eyes. You've all been warned! read more

I took my car here for several years for oil changes and basic repairs like windshield wipers. They'd always had fair prices and the staff is really nice. My car's engine was feeling pretty clunky a few months back, so I took it in and Arbor replaced the engine mounts. It was about $500 and afterward my car drove a little worse than before. So a few days later I took it back in to see if they could make sure everything was okay. Wynn was nice enough to drive it around with me for several minutes, but he said he didn't notice anything and then checked under the hood and recommended that I have an expensive tuneup done. They are nice people, but this just rubbed me the wrong way. Perhaps there was no harm done and I'm just being over sensitive, but I am now on the hunt for a new mechanic. read more

I'm personally not going back there EVER again. I took my car because the A/C wasn't working. It would turn on sometimes, but not always. I took it there for the first time and they charge $80 for the diagnostic, which is the first thing I didn't like. They told me I needed to replace the motor blower resistor. They charged me over $200 and "fixed" the A/C, although I had a feeling it was gonna stop working again because of the way it was acting up. I was right, less than a week went by and I had to take it again. They told me it didn't fall under the warranty because it was something else, and it would cost me over $300.They said they it was a coinsidence that this new problem had come up just a few days after. Yeah right! Now my car is doing the exact same thing it was doing before I took it there. Don't make the mistake I made! read more

They were very good at finding my car's problems right away. They also found when driving it that the master cylinder was going out. I knew this was correct because I had trouble braking, and they did not try to sell me brake pads and rotors. The car was ready the next morning. I had been to Arbor Auto once before for a state inspection and had a great experience--they were nice, quick, and didn't try to charge me for things I didn't need. The man with the white hair (I assume is the owner) was very helpful and made sure to explain everything to me without making me feel dumb. Overall, I'd give them 4 stars for that. So when I was due for an oil change and my check engine light came on, I decided Arbor Auto was the place to go. I took my car in around 10am and they weren't busy so I figured I'd be in and out in no time. I was greeted right as I walked in the door and was treated very nicely by the man with the white hair, just like last time. I reminded him that I had just been in about two months ago and told him that my check engine light had come on again. I also mentioned that I wanted the oil changed. He said they'd take care of it so I took a seat and began to wait. About two hours later, a different man (the white haired guy was gone by now) said he wasn't sure what was taking so long, but that he would go check. He came back a few minutes later and said the mechanic was still checking on some stuff and he should be done soon. Another hour later (three hours total at this point), the mechanic finally came inside to tell me what the problem with the check engine light was--some sort of evaporation leak and then proceeded to tell me I also needed my drive belt and air filter replaced. I asked how much that would be and they quoted me $287. I was shocked so I began to ask how much each specific thing cost and found out that they wanted to charge me $90 for a full diagnostic, which was what took three hours, and that they hadn't even changed my oil yet! I explained to the two men that I did not want a full diagnostic and that I had been misinformed as to what was happening to my car. When I had come in for the state inspection, my check engine light had been on and they simply used their computer scanner to see what the bad code was (it happened to be an evaporation leak then too so the white haired man said to just make sure I close my gas cap tightly and the light went away). I figured that's what they were going to do and had no idea I was going to be charged $90 or else I would have gone to Auto Zone or some other place where they check the bad codes for free. After declining to have them replace the belt and air filter and arguing with the men about the stupid diagnostic fee, they finally agreed to charge me $45 for it instead of $90. Then, I had to wait another 45 minutes for them to actually change the oil in my car, which costed $34. So after almost four hours and $80 later, the only thing they had done to my car was change the oil. I was definitely not satisfied with their work or customer service. They took an obscene amount of time, did not listen to what I asked for, and the mechanic and the man at the counter were very rude. I will not be going back to Arbor Auto. read more

I came in with my beloved car, a 1990 Toyota Cressida, to get her inspected for safety before I took her on a cross country roadtrip back home to North Carolina. Winn and his staff were very helpful, respectful, and straight forward. They identified two major problems, a bad transmission and a leaking freeze plug. Their analysis was accurate and their advice was frank and honest, the cost to fix the car was much more than the value of the car. These guys are honest and I trust their analysis and appreciate their advice. If I were to stay in Austin, I would use these guys as my regular mechanics. read more

The battery in our vehicle died without symptoms leaving us stranded on Far West Boulevard on a Saturday afternoon. What to do? Call AAA? No, call Winn at Arbor Auto Works! He had closed the shop for the weekend but came over with a battery jumper to get us on the road again. Where to? Arbor Auto Works of course! don't know that it's as good as it gets but Mike and his crew do good work. i have never felt they've taken advantage of us and have always been truthful about the repairs they had to do . they are mindful of the expense involved and, as far as i know, have not tried to pad their bill. they get the work done as quickly as they can. i hate having to pay for car repair but at least i've found a place to trust. read more

i bookmarked this place months ago (as i've just relocated and was looking for important places (i.e. mechanic, drug store, physicians, etc) in my area however didn't really need any pertinent work done at the time. just so happens that last week i received a Living social deal to get an oil change for $14!! so i assume that i would get the crappiest service ever because it was a coupon deal. was i ever mistaken? yes very. had to reschedule several times due to work however received great customer service on the phone hence a very good sign in my book. in person service was even better. wow! i walked in without an appt because i didn't want to have to cancel again and i knew i was going to have to wait but lo and behold i was in and out within 20 minutes. i walked in around 9am and they were already changing oil on another car and said that my car would be next (wait time approx 20-30 minutes) but i was walking out receipt in hand by 930. woohoo!! you guys rock!! i'll be back in 3,000 miles. :) read more

I was referred to Arbor about 4 years ago, and have used these guys to take care of the 2 cars I've have had. They have rescued me on several occasions, taken really good care of my cars, and they always seem to charge fair prices. It feels like I'm getting to see friends when I need to take my car in because they have always been warm and friendly, explaining what's going on, answering my questions, and never treating me like I'm less intelligent because I'm a woman. I trust them to work on my car, and depend on them to keep it going for me. Winn has taken care of some smaller details on occasion without charging me for those things, and bought my old "dead" car for me when I needed to get it out of the way.
