They referred me to the Toyota dealers when the could not fix my issue - at not cost. I took a Toyota Corolla in for a check engine light. They checked the code and the publication for the error code said the system needed a rest. The owner also provided me the error publication from Toyota - that specified that the system only needed a reset NOT a replacement ($$). We have dealt with this shop many times. I can't give anything other than 5* after trying out Groovy Automotive recently. I own a fleet of cars and one of my cars was at my regular mechanic for some suspension work, and unfortunately my mechanic couldn't complete the work. I called around, and Groovy had a decent price for the work, so I took my car there. The next day I received a call explaining the work was unneeded... I just needed a new tire. My whole car was shaking, and my last mechanic misdiagnosed it. I went across town and got two new front tires and like they said, that was all the car needed. I don't know how much money I sunk into unnecessary repairs on this car and so much time wasted, but Groovy obviously knows what they're doing and I'll be moving a lot of my business to them. Didn't even charge me a diagnosis fee for figuring out the actual problem. Great service! read more

My A/C was broken and just blowing hot air so I booked an appointment with them to see what the issue was. My compressor and condenser ended up being broken and they quoted me $2700 for the repair and I had to pay $180 for the diagnosis. (Their labor rate is $160/hr) I took my car to my mom's mechanic instead and he quoted me around a quarter of what I would have paid with groovy. AND the diagnosis was free and took 15 min. Also, sidenote, on Groovy's quote, it included recharging the A/C w refrigerant. This is something that can be done by anyone in 15 min and $45, and the quote for that alone was $260, which is an insane price. In conclusion, this deal was so bad that I'm also never going back to their sister location to change my oil. they also broke my car key LOL. read more

I know those friends don't leave reviews & this place deserves to be praised. From tire problems to diagnosing and repairing engine & electrical issues over the years, these very knowledgeable, experienced, helpful & kind mechanics were able to completely raise an older Toyota from the dead after it had been unmoved from a driveway for years. Coming from a young woman, I would NOT go here. I brought it in with my check engine light on. They checked it and told me it would be $1100 to fix. I called my home mechanic who gave me questions to ask them. Turns out only one code had gone off and they added things to be replaced (which I had been there 3 months earlier to fix as well). They didn't have written down which cylinder they'd fixed before so had NO idea if it was the same problem or not. (I assume they wanted to replace multiple things to cover their tracks because they didn't know what the problem was). I drove it home to my trust home mechanic, who found the actual problem with some work and it was only a $260 fix. It's been weeks and the light hasn't turned on. A chain shop told me I needed a new CV boot and quoted me $1100 for the repair. I called Groovy Automotive who told me they could do it for $600. I brought it into Groovy Automotive and they told me it didn't need a new CV boot at all: the chain shop confused the oil they spilled during their shoddy oil change with grease from the CV boot. Groovy saved me $1100 and I found my new auto shop. Support this local Austin institution. They're honest and nice guys to boot. read more

Theses guys are the best. No appointment needed. I needed new brakes. Jim the manager ( that has a voice like Sam Elliot) quoted a price for the front and rear and advised "if needed" cost to turn the rotary. Very up front and honest. Gave me an estimate of time to complete job. SS promised, called with updates and costs. Then called me when the car was ready. You do not get this service at chain repair shops. I've always supported local businesses. And will support Groovey Automotive. I'm coming back for my next oil change. I feel confident they will take care of my Lexus not just change the oil. I've always enjoyed the Mom and Pop feel of this service shop, but I didn't enjoy two things from our last service. 1. Our hood wasn't fully latched. I discovered shortly after leaving, thank goodness for the safety latch on vehicles these days. 2. I was incorrectly advised that the manufacturer requires synthetic oil in our vehicle. That is not true. It's my fault for going ahead with the service and not looking first or remembering, but still the up charge service for no reason is not a good look. We usually take our car to Grand Imports but they were not open during the Holiday time period. So props to Groovy for being open, but won't be our first choice if we have to go somewhere else again. Not a terrible experience but to me with automotive service details are everything and a few things slipped through the cracks. I am impressed they took appointments and stick to them. Most auto repair shops are trending away from appointments or take hours to change your oil. read more

Unfortunately, the repairs were already done, and I of course wanted to fairly compensate them I haven't returned since then, not even to redeem my free oil changes. Relatively impressed with this place. I rarely pay to get my oil changed, but after finding a deposit on Groupon I couldn't resist. The manager at the red river location was friendly and let me know that their wait time was long, but their Guadalupe location would be faster. The Guad location staff were friendly enough. Upon arrival they informed me it would take at LEAST 90 minutes. That seemed odd as it seemed like a slow morning, but what the hell I already paid for the thing. The location is in a busy area which can be hard to get to, so if you're driving a beast-mobile, expect some delays. All in all, it took them about 40 minutes, job was done and I was out. You get about as much as you'd expect here. read more

I bought a groupon for an oil change which seemed like a great deal, as it also included an interior vaccuum and windshield clean. Groovy quoted a short wait, and we got our car back within that time frame. Drop off and pick up proceeded quickly. No one tried to force additional "repair" services or upsell anything. So far so good. It seemed just like previous visits, except cheaper because of the groupon. Here's where they fell down on the job. When they called to let us know our car was ready, we asked them to doublecheck that the vacuuming and window cleaning was done. Yes....sure...no problem...car is totally ready! Unfortunately, when we picked up the car, this was so obviously not done. I would have cut them some slack for "our vacuum is out of order" or "we're shortstaffed, do you mind?" And really, compared to other pressing problems out there in our world today, this hardly registers. But I don't like being lied to. It makes me angry. There are other places to get my car oil changed so I'll go to those from now on. read more

This review is LONG overdue!! I was driving home (Austin) on a Sunday afternoon and a red thermometer lit up on my dash. I pulled into a gas station and let it sit. A nice gentleman offered to take a look. He did and declared that I was good to go! Pulled out and drove about a mile and the little thermo lit up again. At this point, I took it easy and drove home. Parked it and went about my business. Next morning, the thermo light AND another light came on. I went back inside and looked for an auto shop. I saw Groovy, and being a die-hard hippie, I thought it was a perfect fit! Blown gasket and a cracked head. YIKES!!! Not good news for an old lady on a fixed budget. I left the car there and promised to call to let them know what I wanted to do. Long story short, Jim was a perfect gentleman and wrote me a quote for close to $4000. I must've turned green but told him to go ahead and do the repair. Lo and behold, 5 days later my car was ready. My son helped with paying for it. BUT (hold on to your sox) Jim tells me that he was able to wrangle me a deal and I ended up paying approx $1800. That was over 6 months ago and my car is driving fine. A star could be subtracted for the overly-optimistic estimated completion time, but the pricing, especially for parts, and evaluation were good. The service was fine. TIP: The estimated delivery time was overly optimistic, so I missed an appointment. BONUS: The Coffee Bean across the street makes for a good waiting room. No one in town does that better than Groovy. This morning, when my 2012 Nissan stalled out on my drive to work, I called them at 8:45 to tell them I was having it towed straight to the Red River location. I didn't consider anyone else. They showed me the defective part, told me what the plan was, and fixed it without automatically ordering a new part. My cost was at least $300 less than it could have been if they had taken the easy way out for themselves. While I was waiting, I watched several technicians research and discuss the best way to repair someone else's car. The attention to detail and commitment to integrity was impressive. Posting accurate business hours is a really good place to start in terms of not fucking over your dwindling customer base. Another way would be to have ethical business practices and not add on hidden fees that are not outlined in the Groupon Fine Print when people redeem their voucher. Before my experience at Groovy, I felt like every place I went to in ATX would try to scam me because I was a young woman. Recently a car side swiped me downtown and busted my headlight while leaving a wicked mark on the front of my car. My dad called a previous automotive shop and received a super overpriced quote for the repairs. In a desperate measure, I took my car to Groovy just to see what they would do. They were super professional, talked to me like a human, answered all of my dad's typical parental car questions over the phone, gave us a super reasonable price for the repairs, and had my car fixed and detailed the same day I took it in. One day, weeks before my inspection was due, my brake pad light started to flicker. I knew my brake pads were fine because they were only about a year old. Still, I was worried - brakes aren't something you want to mess with. I took it to the dudes at Groovy because it was right around the corner from my old job, and they said they could get it back to me before the end of the day. One of the mechanics gave me a ride to work - he was young and bright and kept the conversation interesting. Within a few hours of returning to work, they called and said it would be $37.25 - total - to repair the faulty wire that was making my brake pad light flicker. I highly recommend that everyone stay away from this place (ESPECIALLY if you're a woman who wants to have even a semi-comfortable experience at a mechanic shop). I took my car in for an oil-change. About 1,000 miles later, my oil light came on again (this has never happened before I took my car to Groovy) so I suspected a leak. I went to Groovy to see if they'd left something loose and they immediately tried to swindle $60 out of me for a "diagnostic test." I said I wouldn't pay that b/c the leak occurred after they changed the oil. Tim, the manager, was immediately defensive and rude. The employee working there stepped in and agreed to check for free. It turns out the filter they put in my car was faulty (along with another smaller, undetectable leak that was there before I took the car in originally). I was concerned about my engine since it was running without oil from the time the damaged filter was inserted. Since Tim made me uncomfortable that morning, I took a friend in with me. When she asked Tim if he was concerned about engine damage as a result of his shop's mistake, he turned red in the face and said that he was not liable. He was incredibly rude and did not apologize for the trouble caused by the faulty part. He constantly talked over us and repeated that he wasn't liable for a faulty part that HIS shop put in my car. Even if by law he's not liable, a little bit of customer service and an apology would have gone a long way. I received none of that and instead, as a female customer, his rude, condescending, and defensive behavior made me feel unsafe and I will not go into his shop again. I want to say that all the other employees were fine, and even helpful. However, I will never return to this shop nor will I recommend it to any of my friends or family because of the manager. read more
