It's exceptionally good and it's the kind of dish that doesn't need any sort of meat. Ten. I also very much loved the spicy pad Thai ($16.95). We added the colossal prawns for like $7.00. The pad Thai was phenomenal - al dente noodles with just the right amount of spice, but the prawns were just a great additional to an already good dish. Come to Kin for a solid Thai food experience.

They only gave us one set of banchan, which I thought was insufficient for a party of 6, especially since several of the dishes we ordered also came with banchan. We had to ask for water, and we finished our initial sides pretty quickly while waiting for our food. When we asked for refills, we had to follow up twice. One of the female servers came across as unfriendly and made us feel like we were bothering her when we asked for more banchan. She didn't even stop or look at us when she responded, "Give me a minute." The male server was friendlier, but overall, the service remained slow, even when we were trying to get our bill and check out. There were also some order mix-ups. We were served the wrong dishes twice, and my friend specifically requested no onions, but that was overlooked as well. Unfortunately, the slow, disorganized, and occasionally unfriendly service took away from the experience and makes me feel a little hesitant to return.

We'd already drunk all our water and had someone come back out to refill it, when the khao soi showed up about 15 minutes later with no mention of the delay. (We also got our check and paid quickly when we were done. Dunno what happened with the khao soi.) The Thai tea was great, and if you're sharing it with someone, 7 bucks is a great price for basically two Thai teas. The pad se ew - the first dish we always judge a Thai place on, being one of both of our favorite Thai dishes - was excellent. Great noodles, perfectly cooked and seasoned, with plenty of Chinese broccoli (I always like to call out the places that use inferior, wrong American broccoli instead, as was *not* the case here). 16 bucks, but that seems to be the going rate these days for Thai food (I remember when it was like half that much...), and you get a good portion. Good portion on the khao soi too. Wonderfully delicious crispy chicken, and a good amount of it. Great curry. Slightly too many crispy noodles, slightly not enough of the regular king - noodle-wise, just ok. In terms of khao soi, ST Noodle is definitely still the gold standard, with Thai District in 2nd. This could be 3rd, though. "Medium" spicy also wasn't very spicy - my wife liked it; I liked it a lot more after adding a bunch of chili sauce.

Lots of seafood and good variety. The stew itself was sooo flavorful. And for dessert, we got the Warm Butter Cake with ice cream. It definitely needs to be shared. It's very rich and so delicious. The challenge is parking since it is limited. I was able to park on the street in the neighborhood without a lot of issues. Definitely will come back for a nice meal and try the other items.

The Taste: AMAZING The Service: extremely friendly, informative service The Place: clean, cozy, good environment ------------ My mother always told me that it's not what you're eating that truly matters, it's how it was prepared. When I was a child, she was able to convince me to eat my broccoli because apparently it was made with careful thought , making that broccoli the best in the world. What does this have to do with Appu's cafe? Well it's very clear that all the food is prepared with immense care, with adequate thought about taste and presentation, and with just the write amount of love to make the food unparalleled. I was lucky enough to visit Appu's cafe JUST before rush hour at noon. This meant that I had the unique privilege of interacting with VR the store's owner. Unsure of what to order, I asked VR what his recommendations were. I believe his exact words to me were "I think you'll enjoy the Maharaja Burrito, a burrito fit for a queen!" Apparently maharaja, is the term for Indian royalty. I was very curious about what exactly made this burrito unique, so I intently watched its preparation. VR added this spice and that, and did so with such finesse, all while holding a conversation with me about the cafe's mission. Apparently, Appu's cafe aims to make food that is delicious and healthy. There are no butters, no oils, and most importantly, there is no meat. As a vegetarian, this really appealed to me. But I was curious as to whether he was able to make food that satisfied the meat-lover's appetite. This question was answered by another customer enjoying his food. Apparently, he eats lunch there just about every week day and is now a weekday vegetarian! He loves the food THAT much! Once I got my Maharaja burrito handed to me, less that 5 minutes after ordering, I took my first bite. It was different from any burrito I had ever tasted--an interesting fusion of Indian spices and cooked vegetables, all in the guise of a traditional Mexican burrito! Serves a good mix of Italian, California Mexican, Indian, and breakfast items. Need help deciding what to eat? The owner, who introduces himself to customers as they walk in, is very knowledgeable and helpful in suggesting options. The California-style Breakfast Burrito is a staple must-have - potatoes, eggs, and mild cheeses, grilled to perfection in a soft tortilla. For a smaller restaurant, Appu's Cafe is also very cozy, homely, and spick-and-span clean. Sheer serendipity brought us to Appu's. We were leery of eating at a hole-in-the-wall cafe at, of all places, a doctor's office building. And now I am writing this 5-star review. It was a pleasure conversing with the owner VR. His love and passion for feeding his customers wholesome and healthy food was what touched us the most. The Pav Bhaji and Samosa Chat that we ate were outstanding. But the conversation with VR on how he saved his life by learning to eat right was the high point of our visit. Albeit a small menu, VR is very creative indeed. No matter what you order, you can rest assured that you've had the tastiest meal possible for the least number of calories. I was extremely impressed with this wonderful cafe and it's unique and healthy concept. After my doctors appointment I went to try out the restaurant. I was greeted with a warm welcome and introduced to the passion of the chef and his dedication to great health. I ordered the masala omelet and fell in love with the sandwich! It was delicious and the health benefits and how it was created was out of this world. Full of flavor and goodness I am now a fan of Appu's and shall be eating their every chance I get! The place is hidden behind a building (hole-in-the wall place) and I had some trouble locating it. The lady doing the customer service and cooking is very friendly and helpful. I tried the Rice bowls with different type of soups and it tasted good. Not very authentic, but good. It was not very expensive either. Tried the lemongrass chai too, which was great. They serve only vegetarian (including eggs). It was not crowded at all, I did go around 2 PM. I've eaten Indian food all over India and California, but I can't say I have eaten any better than Appu's Cafe. It's amazing how VR can cook with minimal or no oil and still have his food so flavorful and delicious. The fact that everything is low in fat and not overly salty makes it all the better, especially since flavor is never compromised. As a vegetarian for over 30 years (I am 64) I have eaten at many places around the country and even in China. VR the owner takes an interest in your particular taste and their food is absolutely delicious. It is hard to find, but I go to Bixby Pharmacy in the Woodruff Medical Building and it is in the back. Every time I need a script filled which is often at my age, I get something for lunch and a take out for dinner. It is great and VR is the best! read more

This is incredible indian food, so good that anytime I try indian from another place THIS is the comparison, and none of them are ever as good. This place is not easy to find, but it is such a gem. It is worth the exploration. I think a lot of Long Beach locals frequent this place and have done so for decades. When I lived in Long Beach my husband and I would come here often for dinner. Sometimes he would come for lunch buffet, its cozy and the staff is friendly and attentive. I still drive down to Kamal Palace every now & again, I live now 1.5hrs away, they are that worth it. My tried-and-true is the Chicken Tikka, their basmati rice is incredible, the samosas are so yummy, their garlic naan is insane. For me, this place can do no wrong, and I noticed they renovated it recently. Love their smokey aroma and taste in most of their food. Heavenly and delicious!

And the owners are the nicest people! Now all of the soups come in one size - 32 ounces, which is a lot! I'll definitely get at least 4 servings out of this container. The kimchi soup is incredibly flavorful and comes with jasmine butter rice. Absolutely delectable. The pozole tastes just like my friends' moms' pozole - yes it's THAT good that it takes me right back to my childhood!! And the lentil soup is actually so crazy delicious, the flavor has so much depth - it really surprised me just how good it tasted. I ultimately chose the pozole because it was nostalgic for me. People have said this is the best pozole in the LBC and I have to say, as far as my experience goes, I agree! Super rich broth, and the beef was delectable! I also got one of the 2 good 2 go frozen kimchi soups, so I can't wait to devour that container as well! It's a little pop up tent on the corner by the traffic circle, and it's great because they have tons of parking! The owners will get to know you as you try each of their soups, we had such a pleasant conversation - it was a truly lovely experience.
